The 15 th of March was my last day at college. Following one month, the assessment would begin. I was feeling blended joy – cheerful and miserable simultaneously. On the one side, I felt diminished towards the finish of the scholarly year. I struggled to accomplish my objectives throughout the previous two years. I got 430 marks in the initial segment and made certain of getting brilliant marks in the following part. I needed to turn into a specialist in the future. The very inclination that I was currently closer to my objective fulfilled me. Along these lines, it was a day that implied a great deal for me.

Friends depart, and memory takes them To her caverns, pure and deep. (Thomas Haynes)

On the opposite side, it was the snapshot of separating. The charming days of the past rang a bell and their remembrance made me tragic. I remembered my first day at college. At the point when I fell prey to the kidding and tricking of the senior understudies. Following one year, I was a senior kid and pulled many pranks on first-year understudies. The sweet recollections of the two years started to sparkle in my psyche. There was a grin all the rage and tears in my eyes.

See: My First Day at College

In our college, there is a custom that the lesser understudies give a goodbye party to the senior active understudies. The last day in college is made a significant event for them. As per the custom of the college, the understudies of the primary year class coordinated in an unbelievable capacity under the oversight of a senior teacher. The college was designed with buntings and banners. Most importantly, we gathered in the grass of the college for a gathering photo. Then, at that point, we went to the college corridor for additional exercises.

There is no substitute for hard work. (Edison)

The head of our college managed the capacity. The delegate of the principal year class made a goodbye discourse. He paid because of the second-year understudies for their co-activity and direction. He vowed to follow the impressions of the seniors. I, in the interest of my group colleagues, delivered a discourse. I paid because of the instructors for their resolute and magnanimous endeavors to edify the personalities of the understudies. I additionally liked the primary year understudies for organizing such an awesome capacity in the distinction of the active senior understudies. I made a guarantee that the send year understudies would work almost to excess to light up the name of the college.

Then, at that point, the commendable chief gave a rich discourse. He encouraged us to play out our obligations genuinely as an understudy and as a resident of the common society. Eventually, our chief gave us his favors and wished us achievement in our future profession. It was a rousing and critical discourse. Every one of the understudies applauded when he completed his discourse.

Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds in the sky, Are best relieved by the letting of water. (Revarol)

The conventional addresses were trailed by a theatrical presentation. It was coordinated for the diversion of the understudies and visitors. The understudies played out a couple of tomfoolery fair things. Toward the finish of the show, we were presented with tea, bread rolls, cakes, and organic product. The goodbye party was an incredible achievement in each regard.

It was the finish of a magnificent range of two years at my college. I had invested a ton of cheerful energy there. I participated in discussions and sports effectively and won many prizes. A portion of my instructors incredibly affected me and illuminated my viewpoint. I additionally make a couple of new companions whose decent organization was remarkable for me.

The last day at my college was, to be sure, a paramount day in my life. Every one of the active understudies disappeared from their instructors and companions with heavy hearts. At the point when I was leaving college, there were tears in my eyes.

quotes for essay my last day at college

Mixed Emotions: Excitement and Nerves

Expect to feel excited but also nervous on your last day of college. Excitement about new opportunities and the road ahead, but nervous about what is to come and if you can make it (spoiler alert: of course you can!). Expect to feel some bittersweet emotions — you may feel sad about ending an important chapter in your life, but also very happy and proud of the incredible accomplishments you’ve achieved by graduating college.

Comparison is a Real Issue

Some of your colleagues and classmates may already have jobs lined up to start right away. Some people you know may not have started the job hunt at all. Some may be lining up travel plans or celebrations and some may completely brush aside graduation day like it is nothing. Don’t compare yourself to everyone around you. In the same way that you’ve met a wide range of people throughout your studies, so will be their plans and planning styles for the future. Know that you are making the best choice for you, whatever it may be.

Understand How Much You’ve Changed

Your last day of college, while full of social interactions and celebrations, should also be a time for self-reflection. You will likely think of how far you have come and what circumstances you’ve passed over the last several years as a student that made you the person you are today.

Cherish the Special Bonds You’ve Made

The last several years of your life as a student has certainly had its ups and downs. Through these times, you’ve likely made incredible friendships and relationships with people, unlike any bonds you’ve experienced before. These people have been with you through it all, so take some time during your last days in college to connect with the people who have touched your life. Ask them where they plan to go and what their next steps are. Make sure to stay in touch with classmates, friends and professors who have made a difference in your life.

Tips for Your Last Day of College

With all these expected emotions and thoughts coming in and out on your last day, here are some tips to keep you going strong:

Take some time to reflect on your time as a student. This will be a busy day for you, but make sure you carve out some time for yourself to go over your last several years in your mind.

Make Goals:

Today your mind will be running around with all sorts of thoughts. It’s a good day to make a quick list of goals for yourself for the short, medium and long term. Or if you already have goals , revisit them and see what changes, if any, need to be made now that you’re a graduate.

Say Goodbye:

There have likely been many people that have taken part in your life as a college student. Take time to say goodbye and thank you to professors and peers who have helped you along the way.

The people in your life who have watched you grow will likely want to see you succeed. What better way than to send a brief announcement, either over email, written note or on social media. Make sure to send individual notices thanking those who played a special role in your life thus far.

Don’t forget that life after college is the beginning of a new era!

Next Steps: Your Future Starts Now

After the celebrations and festivities, it’s time to get organized and figure out what your future holds.

1. Celebrate! You did it!

Obviously, this is the first step after your last day of college. Before you begin the planning, worrying, and buckling down, make sure to have fun in your last days of college and celebrate all that you’ve accomplished.

2. Planning Out Your Next Steps

You may have already started planning for your next steps. If not, now is the time. Whether you are thinking of searching for a new job , internship, continuing the same job, make some decisions about where you see yourself headed in the short term. You don’t have to go the traditional route either: consider other options such as volunteering , travel, or taking time for family.

3. Create Your Goals

Take stock of your current goals for yourself — personally, professionally, financially and otherwise. Now that you are finished with school, these goals may have changed. Your last days of college are a great time to revisit goals, make some new ones, and of course get some checked off!

4. Pay Off Your Loans

Make a plan to pay off your student loans, starting now. Even if you don’t think you’ll start payments for some time, start to plan so that when the time comes, you won’t be shocked that it’s already time. Don’t forget that there are plenty of student loan forgiveness programs that can ease quite a bit of that debt.

5. Create A Budget

And stick to it, too! A well-planned and followed budget is a key to financial success after college. Look at your current income or expected income, and make a budget that includes living expenses, extra spending, debt repayment and more. Try to stay within your budget , and you’ll surely stay out of the statistics of recent graduates plunging into debt.

Inspirational Last Day of College Messages

Some words of wisdom to keep you going leading up to your last day, and then some!

  • “Things may end, but memories will last forever.”
  • “How lucky it is to have something that makes it so hard to say goodbye.”

So much has transpired between your first day of college and your last. You have likely grown and changed as a person, had unparalleled life experiences, and you have a degree to show for all of this. This may be a bitter-sweet period, but you’ll always have your college life memories for precious moments of reminiscence. Now, it’s time to go celebrate and enjoy your final days as a student!

2. My Last College Day Celebration

The time, when all the lectures, pieces of training, examinations, classes, seminars are over, has come to you. Happy to hear this news? Today is the time for the last speeches, expressing regret and gratitude, spending last hours together with educators and group mates, celebrating this prominent event and saying goodbye to each other. Celebrate this day!

Start with the last lecture devoted, for example, to critical thinking skills and the ability to generate innovative ideas. It is the last lecture in your college life. Many students listen more carefully than ever before, feel a variety of emotions and nearly lost in their thoughts. How fast is this life!

After a solemn diploma ceremony, which may be quite official, with orchestra and multiple speeches, don’t forget to thank all your teachers and apologize to them for some mistakes. They can recollect some funny incidents with you at the lessons, your first progress in the studies. They’ll surely wish you success and the best possible future. You’ll look serious in your graduation hats and robes. Take a lot of photographs in order to memorize this day and ceremony in detail.

3. My Last College Graduation Party

After the graduation ceremony, you are likely to have a farewell party. It is a really great event for college graduates! All of your coursemates are glorious, in good spirit, alert with hope for the future and glad to spend some time together. Right? Then, make this day more memorable as you don’t have the chance to celebrate a graduate every day. Take into consideration the 17 ideas for an amazing college graduation party to celebrate the accomplishments of your young adult. With a great party plan, you will be on your way to creating memories that will last forever:

“We danced on the lawn and sang some of our favorite songs. We had so much fun! We had such a great time together, enjoying outdoor games, music, and incredible weather. But the most important for me was to spend this time with my dear friends, to hug them and to talk to them. And we also recalled our college times.” – it is one of the memories that flood back to you. In the meantime, you can refresh your college memories with the help of the game “Who I Am?”. The rules are quite simple to play and have fun at a party: every participant writes down a name and a college memory he/she wants to share with the others, all pieces of paper are mixed up, then one of them is read aloud to guess who wrote the memory.

You can bring back fond memories like:

  • The first day at a college: “I remember the day I arrived at the campus. I felt a little bit uneasy and proud because of the beginning of my new adult life”.
  • Studying at a college: “It was not a piece of cake at the beginning. I spent several hours a day at the library, but then made some progress and learned to take new information faster”.
  • The day when you get acquainted with your best friends: “I remember the days when I met my friends, Anna and Sophia, the parties we had at the weekends, our secrets, first love, and dates”.

There are a lot of things to talk about. The last day at college is worth to be remembered as well. This is the time when you are happy that the college studying period is over, and you’re facing a new period of life. Keep in mind that every period of life can be simplified if it is too tough. For example, your college life would have been easier if you had applied the help of qualified specialists in academic writing. Just think about this opportunity.

Essay My Last Day at College or My Last Day at School

“friends depart, and memory takes them to her caverns, pure and deep” (thomas haynes).

My memories of my last day of college are still very much intact. It was an exciting and feeling-filled day. Our juniors, the first-year students, threw a goodbye party for us, the second-year students. I’ve never been able to leave on time for college. But on that particular day, I beat the record and arrived on time for the institution. The classes were suspended on that memorable day so that we could say our last goodbyes.

“How lucky it is to have something that makes it so hard to say goodbye.”

When I got to the campus, I ran across my dear friends, who were now prepared to part ways. On the one hand, I am eager to finish school and begin a new phase of my life. On the other side, as I bid farewell to my friends and instructors who have contributed to my college experience, I am experiencing grief and nostalgia.

I am overcome with nostalgia as I stroll around the college campus for the last time. After a brief conversation with friends, we took some lovely pictures of different areas of our campus. I still remember how I felt on my first day of college—both anxious and excited—and how quickly I made friends and settled in.

I also recall the extended study sessions, late-night cramming sessions, and difficulties I had while in college. But I also recall the aid and direction I received from my instructors and friends throughout the challenging periods.

“Things may end, but memories will last forever.”

I am appreciative of the information and abilities I have acquired throughout my time in college when I think back on my time there. Along with my instructors, my friends, and extracurricular activities, they have all taught me something. I’ve matured as a person and gained self-assurance and a feeling of freedom.

The feeling of connection and community I have had at college is among the things I will miss the most when I leave. As a student, my professors and classmates have always been supportive of me and have allowed me to develop close relationships with them.

I will also miss the freedom and adaptability that come with being a student, which is another aspect of college that I will regret. I’ve had the chance to investigate many topics and pursuits and to identify my hobbies and interests.

Additionally, I will miss the campus and all of its amenities, including the cafeteria, gym, and library. I have spent many hours studying, working out, and socializing at these locations over the last four years, and they have served as my second home. I am also appreciative of the friendships I have developed while attending college. I will always treasure the memories that we have created together, since these are friendships that will last a lifetime.

I’m excited and looking forward to the future as I bid goodbye to college and look to the future. I’m prepared to face the difficulties of everyday life and leave my imprint on the world. But I will always cherish and be grateful for the time I spent at college.

The music in my heart I bore ,

Long after it was heard, no more (wordsworth).

To sum up, my last day at college is a bittersweet occasion for me. I am eager to leave college and begin a new chapter in my life, but I will also miss the people, places, and experiences that have made up my college career. I am appreciative of the information, abilities, and friendships I have acquired throughout my time here, and I will always cherish my college years.

My Last Day at College

Speech on My Last Day at College

  • Introduction: a cluster of happy faces: my own feelings
  • The real business is done smoothly: the spirit of farewell
  • The last view of the college: memories and recollections: everything going on as before: change of feeling towards everything: all love, no malice

In the store-house of my college memories, enriched with many pearls and pebbles collected over the last two years, the last day at the college occupies a prominent position. Every part of it is still fresh in my mind and will, I hope, remain so for many years to come. To me, it was not only the day of parting but also one of new realization.

It was a chilly but sunny day. A large number of us who had been sent up for this University Examination-over a hundred and fifty in strength- had turned up early in the forenoon to pay our fees for the final examination. The college office was yet to open. We were loitering in groups on the lawn in front of the office and enjoying the sunshine. There were clusters of happy faces all around-faces beaming with joy and hope. Everybody was discussing examination-mostly the test and casually the final. The examination was far off and everybody was hoping the best to turn out. Hence there was no sign of concern on any face. I was strolling about to meet and take Leave of friends whom, I thought, I would not see for a long time. My own feelings at the time were a mixture of gaiety and sadness. I was gay at the thought that the first phase of my college career had been successfully completed and made the best of. I could not but feel sad also because I was going to leave behind the institution where I passed two joyful years of my life adorned with various experiences and acquisitions.

Soon the college office opened. I received the application form and repaired to an adjoining room where a Professor was guiding the candidates to fill in their forms correctly. My heart was throbbing as my pen paced along the columns. So, I was going to face the second ordeal of my lifc ! Would I fare in it as well as I did in the first ? Rcpcatedly this question rose and fell in my mind. I could not find a definite answer and an unexplainable fear was hovering around my mind. This business took me about half an hour. Next I stood in one of the three queues formed to deposit fccs in three windows. Done in a disciplined manner, this did not take us much time. The clerks, unlike their formerselves, were rather good-humoured and helpful on that day. Several discrepancies were corrected on the spot and some were allowed to pay focs on the understanding of producing some essential certificates later on. On the whole an atmosphere of cordiality’ prevailcd all through. The clerks were wishing good luck to the students which the latter were reciprocating with thanks. It looked like a farewell ceremony and all secmed cager to end the day happily.

As soon as my fees were paid up, a sense of vacuum seized my mind. I had all along been feeling heavy at heart and now a cloud of depression enveloped the entire horizon. I wanted to go home to cheer myself up but felt clearly that I could not move off without taking a last look around the college.

I went first to the College Union office and sat there chatting for a few minutes. As I stepped into the room, my mind flew back to the last election of the Union. What a wave of excitement ran through the whole college, nay, the whole town! Hundreds of students moved vigorously10 day and night to secure votes for the contesting parties. What a pompous procession was taken out by the victorious party! I felt writhe in my heart and a shiver of joy running down my body. Next, I went to the common room the venue of many, many hours of priceless mirth and gaiety. I found it as busy and noisy as ever. The absence of the students of one year did not seem to have mattered at all. I visited the canteen and sipped’ a cup of tea there. here also no sign of change was visible. Next, I went to the library and saw in it the progress of silent quest for learning as ever. I walked along the rows of admirals and shelves and looked at the countless books with amazement. This vast ocean of books remained to me almost as unfathomed as it was on the first day.

On my way back home, I was passing by the staff room and the laboratory when all at once host memories of class-room business were stirred up. How often did I feel bored in the class! How often did I dislike some of the Professors because they were too much serious about their business! How much did many of us hate a Professor or two for their strictness about percentage and laboratory works. How frequently did we speak ill of the Principal because he tried to enforce discipline or turned down some of our prayers! But on this last day of all days, all those feelings had vanished. As I searched my heart, I found nothing but love for them all. Even the clerks and the bearers appeared dearer than ever. How hard they too had labored to make our college days smooth and useful And as I stepped out of the massive college gate, I felt that my heart was full of love for all, and not a bit of malice for anybody.

Genius Does What It Must, and Talent Does What It Can.

Essay on My Last day at college with Quotations for Class 12

“the quality of a college is measured more by the kind of students it turns out than the kinds it takes in.”  (robert j. kibbee).

There is hardly any living being who has not gone through ups and downs of life. Actually, life is full of bad as well as good incidents. Some of them may be forgotten, whereas others leave an everlasting imprint on the mind.

Write the bad things that are done to you in the sand, but the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble.

Helen Keller, the dumb and deaf American authoress, holds that we do not value the things until we lose them. Her words echoed in my mind on my last day at college. It was only then I realized how much I cherished the college I was going to leave. It seemed to me as if somebody were drawing my soul out from my body. I must acknowledge that I had spent the most valuable time of my life at college and rightly call it the asset of my life.

On my last day at college, I reached college at 9:00 a.m. to attend the farewell party which our juniors had arranged for us. I went to the auditorium where all my friends and fellow students had gathered. It was for the first time that students were no in their uniforms. I was happy that I had availed myself of college opportunity successfully, but I was also sad because I was going to leave the place I valued highly.

As the principal entered the auditorium, all the students and teachers rose from their chairs to welcome him. The ceremony started with the verse from the Holy Quran. Then one of our juniors made the Farwell speech. The speech represented the feelings of our dear juniors for us. It appreciated the guidance we had given to our juniors. The speaker ended his speech with the best wishes for our prosperous and bright future.

Friends depart, and memory takes them To her caverns, pure and deep.” – ( Thomas Haynes)

Then it came to the entertainment performances by our juniors. They made some acting comedy performances, which we enjoyed a lot. I remember the time when we, the seniors, used to occupy the stage, but that day we were guests and our juniors were our hosts. They were going to replace us and we were departing with fine impressions.

I, the representative of the seniors, we then called the stage to express my feelings. I recited a poem that I had written for this occasion. In the poem, I paid tribute to the worthy professors who had enlightened us and infused in us a thirst for knowledge. I also thanked the principal and our juniors for all they had said about us.

Then the principal made his goodbye speech. He gave some valuable pieces of advice and wished a continued success for our future. He advised us that “purpose of life is to live a life of purpose. As long as you live, keep learning how to live.” At the end of the ceremony, we enjoyed high tea with the principal, professors and the juniors.

“The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.”  (Robert Maynard)

We had video cameras with us and we were capturing these precious moments not only in our cameras but also in our hearts. We also took autographs from the principal and our dear teachers. Some of the students took the autographs on their shirts. These were the token of love and remembrance. Then we came to the time to leave forever. Our hearts were heavy with mixed feelings.

Farewell my friends, farewell my foes,

My love with these, may care for those.

Kainat Shakeel

The last day at college marks the end of a period, a chapter filled with horselaugh, literacy, and lasting friendships. As I pen down my reflections on this significant day, the flood tide of feelings is inviting, a rollercoaster lift of nostalgia and expectation for what lies ahead.

The Journey Begins:

Walking through the college gates for the first time felt like stepping into a world of endless possibilities. The journey wasn’t just about handbooks and examinations but a mosaic of gests that shaped my character. From the first awkward preface to lifelong friends, every moment was a structure block of particular growth.

Academic Achievements:

The academic journey was further than a hunt for grades; it was a pursuit of knowledge that converted me. The challenges and triumphs in the classroom were vital in preparing me for the real world. Each course was a stepping gravestone, contributing to my intellectual elaboration.

The Last Lectures:

The final lectures were a mix of academic wisdom and novelettish farewells. Professors participated inestimable perceptivity, and as the last words echoed through the lecture halls, it actualized on me that this chapter was closing. The exchange of gratefulness and wisdom came as the highlight of those final hours.

An Emotional Farewell:

Saying farewell to friends was the most heart-wrenching part of the last day. The horselaugh participated, the gashes exfoliated, and the pledges created a shade of feelings. The fellowship erected over the times wasn’t just a part of college it was the substance of the entire experience.

A Walk Down Memory Lane:

Roaming around the lot for the last time, I redefined cherished spots. From the library that witnessed innumerous study sessions to the canteen that echoed with horselaugh, each corner held recollections. The nostalgia was palpable as I bid farewell to the place that had come as an alternate home.

Graduation Preparation:

Amidst the emotional farewells, medications for scale added an air of excitement. Choosing the right outfit, rehearsing the walk across the stage, and feeling the expectation of holding that hard-earned degree- the preamble to scale was both whim-whams- wracking and exhilarating.

A Capstone of Dreams:

The day eventually arrived, marked by the fluttering gowns and the sense of accomplishment. The form was a festivity of hard work and determination. As I stood on the stage, the ocean of familiar faces below, I felt a swell of pride and gratefulness for the trip that led me to this moment.

Expressions of Gratitude:

In the fate of the form, expressing gratefulness became essential. Professors, staff, and friends were thanked for their unvarying support. The connections forged during college were conceded as the pillars that held me up during grueling times.

Unborn Bourne’s Beyond the Lot Gates:

With the degree in hand, the unborn impended large. The last day at college wasn’t just an end but a morning. The Bourne’s and pretensions that fueled the college trip now refocused the way forward. The world outdoors awaited, and I was ready to face it head-on.

Challenges Faced A Road Less Smooth:

The trip wasn’t without its challenges. From academic hurdles to particular struggles, each handicap came an assignment. The last day was a testament to adaptability, showcasing the capability to overcome adversity and crop stronger.

Beyond the Classroom Walls:

Reflecting on the college experience revealed a shade of assignments. Beyond academic knowledge, the trip imparted life chops, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of tone. The last day wasn’t just an end but a scale into a wiser interpretation of myself.

Embrace the Journey:

To unborn college scholars, I offer a simple piece of advice embrace the trip. Dive into every occasion, learn from lapses, and cherish the bonds formed. College isn’t just about grades; it’s a transformative experience that shapes your future.

A Ripple in Time:

As the echoes of farewell dallied, the impact became apparent. The last day at college wasn’t just a farewell to an institution but a farewell to an interpretation of myself. The recollections, assignments, and friendships would ripple through time, shaping the person I was becoming.

Lasting Echo of Goodbye:

In conclusion, the last day at college is a symphony of feelings, a top of farewells and new onsets. It’s not just an ending chapter but a helipad into the future. As I step out of the familiar gates, I carry a pack full of recollections and assignments that will guide me on the road ahead.

Today is my last day at college and I am feeling a mix of emotions. On one hand, I am excited to graduate and start a new chapter in my life. On the other hand, I am feeling a sense of sadness and nostalgia as I say goodbye to my friends and teachers who have been a part of my college journey.

As I walk through the college campus for the last time, I am filled with memories of the past four years. I remember the excitement and nervousness I felt on my first day of college, and how quickly I made friends and found my place in the college community.

I also remember the long hours of studying, the late-night cram sessions, and the struggles and challenges that I faced during my college years. But I also remember the support and guidance of my teachers and friends who helped me through the difficult times.

As I reflect on my college experience, I am grateful for the knowledge and skills that I have gained during my time here. I have learned not only from my professors but also from my peers and extracurricular activities. I have grown as a person and developed a sense of independence and self-confidence.

One of the things that I will miss the most about college is the sense of community and belonging that I have experienced here. As a student, I have always felt welcomed and supported by my teachers and peers, and I have been able to develop meaningful relationships with them.

Another thing that I will miss about college is the freedom and flexibility that comes with being a student. I have been able to explore different subjects and activities, and have had the opportunity to discover my passions and interests.

I will also miss the campus and its facilities, such as the library, the gym, and the cafeteria. These have been my second home for the past four years, and I have spent countless hours studying, exercising, and socializing in these places.

I am also grateful for the friendships that I have made during my time at college. These are friendships that will last a lifetime, and I will always cherish the memories that we have made together.

As I say goodbye to college and look toward the future, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. I am ready to take on the challenges of the real world and make my mark on the world. But I will always look back on my college years with fondness and gratitude.

In conclusion, my last day at college is a bittersweet moment for me. I am excited to graduate and start a new chapter in my life, but I will also miss the friends, teachers, and facilities that have been a part of my college experience. I am grateful for the knowledge, skills, and relationships that I have gained during my time here, and I will always look back on my college years with fondness.

My last name is Pretzel. Once a pretzel company offered me a job because of it.

  • My last name is Pretzel and I love it.
  • I once had a pretzel company offer me a job based solely on my name.
  • My daughters have both my and my husband's last name, and I hope they love it as much as I do.

Insider Today

Nearly 90 years ago, my great-grandfather, Paul Pretzel Sr., told his son, Paul Pretzel Jr., that when he got older, he could change his name if he wanted to. "I guess it's sort of an odd name," he told his little boy.

When my grandpa recounted this conversation, he shrugged and smiled. "But I like my name. I think it's sort of fun," he said. And so does the rest of our family — especially me.

I love having the last name Pretzel. People smile when I introduce myself. They giggle when I whip out one of my canned pretzel-themed jokes about being "salty" or a little "twisted." Once, a gourmet pretzel company flat-out offered me a sales job based on nothing but a short conversation and the fact that my name is so adorably delicious.

Over the years, I've heard people say that unique or odd names make a person's life harder, suggesting they're more vulnerable to teasing and mean nicknames. But I've found that having a "weird" last name can be great.

My family is proud to represent our unusual last name

Not every unique name comes with a physical representation but ours, Pretzel, does, and over the years, pretzels have served as a sort of mascot for our family.

My relatives and I have been known to collect pretzel-themed home decor, wallhangs, and jewelry. To this day, my most treasured kitchen item is a pretzel-shaped bottle opener I got as a gift more than a decade ago. I'm often seen running errands with my pretzel-shaped purse. My mom never fails to put out bowls of crunchy pretzels whenever she's entertaining, and I also have an aunt who, at her wedding, surprised her guests with a warm, soft pretzel at every table setting.

My pretzel pride even extends to my choices in travel. In college, I decided to study abroad in Austria , knowing that some of my ancestors originated there. I was excited to see the cities where my family once lived, and I was also excited to see what kind of pretzel merchandise I could find. I pictured myself returning with bags and bags of cool "Pretzel" shirts and keychains for my family.

To my surprise, I learned that in German, pretzels are called "bretzels." Alas, I came back with fewer souvenirs than expected — but I was inspired to improve my own authentic "bretzel" recipe.

Our unique name has given us a good sense of humor

Having a unique title is one thing, but I think it's the silliness of our name that makes it so special. In fact, I've found that having a food-themed last name has forced our "pack of Pretzels" not to take ourselves too seriously and has encouraged us all to have a healthy sense of humor.

Some of us have sustained a little playful name-based teasing over the years — but we're OK with laughing at ourselves. In fact, I'm proud when one of my well-practiced pretzel puns makes others smile.

A unique name isn't for everyone

While all my living family enjoys our food-tastic name, at least one relative apparently didn't appreciate it. My great-aunt didn't like the family name and legally added an extra "L" to the end, altering it to Pretzell — which rhymes with "Cornell."

To my knowledge, no one in the family was offended by her change — I think they knew that some unique names aren't for everyone.

I love my last name so much that, when my daughters were born, I wanted them to have both my and my husband's last names. Maybe the choice is a little untraditional, but I love getting to pass down one of my family's most treasured family heirlooms.

What is Presidents Day and how is it celebrated? What to know about the federal holiday

Many will have a day off on monday in honor of presidents day. consumers may take advantage of retail sales that proliferate on the federal holiday, but here's what to know about the history of it..

quotes for essay my last day at college

Presidents Day is fast approaching, which may signal to many a relaxing three-day weekend and plenty of holiday sales and bargains .

But next to Independence Day, there may not exist another American holiday that is quite so patriotic.

While Presidents Day has come to be a commemoration of all the nation's 46 chief executives, both past and present, it wasn't always so broad . When it first came into existence – long before it was even federally recognized – the holiday was meant to celebrate just one man: George Washington.

How has the day grown from a simple celebration of the birthday of the first president of the United States? And why are we seeing all these ads for car and furniture sales on TV?

Here's what to know about Presidents Day and how it came to be:

When is Presidents Day 2024?

This year, Presidents Day is on Monday, Feb. 19.

The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of every February because of a bill signed into law in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Taking effect three years later, the Uniform Holiday Bill mandated that three holidays – Memorial Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day – occur on Mondays to prevent midweek shutdowns and add long weekends to the federal calendar, according to Britannica .

Other holidays, including Labor Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day , were also established to be celebrated on Mondays when they were first observed.

However, Veterans Day was returned to Nov. 11 in 1978 and continues to be commemorated on that day.

What does Presidents Day commemorate?

Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington. In fact, the holiday was simply called Washington's Birthday, which is still how the federal government refers to it, the Department of State explains .

Following the death of the venerated American Revolution leader in 1799, Feb. 22, widely believed to be Washington's date of birth , became a perennial day of remembrance, according to History.com .

The day remained an unofficial observance for much of the 1800s until Sen. Stephen Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas proposed that it become a federal holiday. In 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law, according to History.com.

While initially being recognized only in Washington D.C., Washington's Birthday became a nationwide holiday in 1885. The first to celebrate the life of an individual American, Washington's Birthday was at the time one of only five federally-recognized holidays – the others being Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.

However, most Americans today likely don't view the federal holiday as a commemoration of just one specific president. Presidents Day has since come to represent a day to recognize and celebrate all of the United States' commanders-in-chief, according to the U.S. Department of State .

When the Uniform Holiday Bill took effect in 1971, a provision was included to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday with Abraham Lincoln's on Feb. 12, according to History.com. Because the new annual date always fell between Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, Americans believed the day was intended to honor both presidents.

Interestingly, advertisers may have played a part in the shift to "Presidents Day."

Many businesses jumped at the opportunity to use the three-day weekend as a means to draw customers with Presidents Day sales and bargain at stores across the country, according to History.com.

How is the holiday celebrated?

Because Presidents Day is a federal holiday , most federal workers will have the day off .

Part of the reason Johnson made the day a uniform holiday was so Americans had a long weekend "to travel farther and see more of this beautiful land of ours," he wrote. As such, places like the Washington Monument in D.C. and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota – which bears the likenesses of Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt – are bound to attract plenty of tourists.

Similar to Independence Day, the holiday is also viewed as a patriotic celebration . As opposed to July, February might not be the best time for backyard barbecues and fireworks, but reenactments, parades and other ceremonies are sure to take place in cities across the U.S.

Presidential places abound across the U.S.

Opinions on current and recent presidents may leave Americans divided, but we apparently love our leaders of old enough to name a lot of places after them.

In 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau pulled information from its databases showcasing presidential geographic facts about the nation's cities and states.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the census data shows that as of 2020 , the U.S. is home to plenty of cities, counties and towns bearing presidential names. Specifically:

  • 94 places are named "Washington."
  • 72 places are named "Lincoln."
  • 67 places are named for Andrew Jackson, a controversial figure who owned slaves and forced thousands of Native Americans to march along the infamous Trail of Tears.

A Billionaire Bought a Chunk of Manchester United. Now He Has to Fix It.

Jim Ratcliffe spent $1.5 billion for a 25 percent stake in his boyhood English soccer club. On Wednesday, he laid out his vision.

Jim Ratcliffe stands outside Manchester United’s stadium as other people walk past.

By Tariq Panja

Reporting from London

The process was six months old and already starting to wear on Jim Ratcliffe, the British billionaire, the first time he brought out the Champagne to toast his purchase of Manchester United. But even that celebration, at the Monaco Grand Prix in May, proved premature.

There was no deal. Not yet.

Doing one was never going to be easy. Mostly, that was because any potential sale for United offered a tantalizing marriage of money, power and history: Mr. Ratcliffe, the wealthy chairman of INEOS, the petrochemicals giant, had supported Manchester United since he was a boy. United, the most decorated club in English soccer, was one of the most iconic brands in global sports. And the Premier League, to which it belonged, was the richest soccer league in the world.

What ensued was an auction as unpredictable and chaotic as some of Manchester United’s most memorable games. The news media breathlessly tracked surges of momentum between Mr. Ratcliffe’s bid and a rival one led by a little-known Qatari sheikh.

United fans, eager to see their club shake off its unpopular owners, the Florida-based Glazer family, devoured it all. Yet while the negotiations produced months of headlines, discussion and whispers, what they did not produce was a sale.

Mr. Ratcliffe won out in the end. Kind of.

On Dec. 26, the Glazers announced that they had agreed to sell 25 percent of United to Mr. Ratcliffe, one of the world’s richest men. The price — more than $1.5 billion — bought a curious arrangement in which Mr. Ratcliffe, the new minority owner, would take over day-to-day control of the club’s soccer operation. The deal was ratified on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, as Mr. Ratcliffe outlined his vision, newspapers and websites grabbed eagerly at the headline-ready quotes about new players , old rivals and stadium plans . But a closer listen to his words suggested that the grueling sales process might have been the easy part. Reviving United — a trophy-winning machine a decade ago, in recent seasons reduced to something closer to a punchline — is likely to be a yearslong process, he warned.

“It’s not a light switch,” Mr. Ratcliffe said. “It’s not one of these things that changes overnight.”

Mr. Ratcliffe talked about how, under his stewardship, United would adopt a soccer-first mentality, a clear effort to differentiate his focus from that of the Glazers, whose stewardship has helped turn United into a cash machine commercially but a sputtering, confounding disappointment on the field.

Continued failure, Mr. Ratcliffe said, will “start to degrade the brand if you’re not careful.”

He was less clear about how his investment, as a minority shareholder, will work in practice when it comes to major decisions, saying only that he had built up a rapport with Joel and Avram Glazer, the two Glazer family members most involved in United, during what he described as a “rocky” sales process.

“As long as we’re doing the right things, then I’m certain that relationship is going to go very well,” Mr. Ratcliffe said.

The delay in completing his investment was not down to the Glazers anyway, he said, but rather a confluence of circumstances that included United’s independent directors, hedge funds that owned a portion of Manchester United stock that will continue to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, American financial regulators and a Qatari group whose presence seemed to do little more than drive up the price.

At one point on Wednesday, Mr. Ratcliffe joked that he was not even sure that the little-known sheikh announced as the figurehead of the Qatari bid actually existed.

His interest, he insisted, was genuine. He recalled growing up in a family that was split along tribal lines, with one half hewing toward the red of United and the other toward the pale blue of its crosstown rival, Manchester City.

For much of Mr. Ratcliffe’s life, that has not been much of a rivalry. But now City is the pre-eminent team in soccer, a serial winner of England’s Premier League and the champion of Europe. And in a meandering hour with reporters, it was notable how often the new United owner kept returning to the success being enjoyed on the other side of Manchester.

“There is nothing I would like better than to knock both of them from their perch,” Mr. Ratcliffe said of City and another recently successful United rival, Liverpool.

For fans, the phrase recalled a bit of club folklore, having once been used in reference to Liverpool by Alex Ferguson, the coach who would go on to do what he promised in two trophy-collecting decades at United.

“They have been in a good place for a while, and there are things we can learn from both of them,” Mr. Ratcliffe said of City and Liverpool.

“I am very respectful of them,” he added. “But they are still the enemy.”

While Mr. Ratcliffe left little doubt that he intends to bring back success to United as speedily as he can, he is also stymied by Premier League regulations. United’s collapse in performance has coincided with one of the biggest talent acquisitions sprees in its history, and untangling that profligacy has left the club poorly positioned to meet the league’s spending limits.

That means that any radical restructuring efforts to address its roster will be limited for the time being. “There’s no question that history will impact this summer window,” he said.

Sorting a plan for United’s stadium may be more achievable: either a refit costing 1 billion pounds ($1.27 billion) of its current home, Old Trafford, or — Mr. Ratcliffe’s preference — a new build of something even grander on its footprint that would require public investment but act as a facility that could serve the entire north of England.

Invoking the history of Manchester as an engine of the Industrial Revolution and claims that British governments have favored investments in London and the country’s south, Mr. Ratcliffe appeared to be making his pitch for a type of redress for historical wrongs.

But in his case, it would be one that would also benefit a billionaire tax exile who now enjoys a luxury life in Monte Carlo.

“I paid my taxes for 65 years in the U.K.,” he said. “And then when I got to retirement age, I went down to enjoy a bit of sun. I don’t have a problem with that, I’m afraid.”
