Philosophy in Review

Philip Rose

Bryan Bannon

"From Mastery to Mystery is an original and provocative contribution to the burgeoning field of ecophenomenology. Informed by current debates in environmental philosophy, Bannon critiques the conception of nature as “substance” that he finds tacitly assumed by the major environmental theorists. Instead, this book reconsiders the basic goals of an environmental ethic by questioning the most basic presupposition that most environmentalists accept: that nature is in need of preservation. Beginning with Bruno Latour’s idea that continuing to speak of nature in the way we popularly conceive of it is ethically and politically disastrous, this book describes a way in which the concept of nature can retain its importance in our discussion of the contemporary state of the environment. Based upon insights from the phenomenological tradition, specifically the work of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, the concept of nature developed in the book preserves the best antihumanistic intuitions of environmentalists without relying on either a reductionistic understanding of nature and the sciences or dualistic metaphysical constructions."

A World not Made for Us: Topics in Critical Environmental Philosophy

Keith R Peterson

Environmental philosophy has challenged the dominant western culture’s conception of human nature through critiques of “anthropocentrism” (human chauvinism). It has annoyed the mainstream with critiques of instrumental rationality and its plea on behalf of the “intrinsic value of nature.” It has irritated nonenvironmentalists and even some environmentalists with its criticism of mechanism or the reductionist scientific worldview and has argued in favor of some form of “ecological worldview.” The critique of anthropocentrism, the intrinsic value of nature, and the ecological worldview are central topics for environmental philosophers, appearing across a wide range of environmentalist writing, from environmental ethics and policy to political ecology, ecocriticism, and metaphysics. As I understand them, these topics have characterized environmental philosophy since its inception in the 1970s.

Environmental Ethics

Christopher Manes

Although the particular ethical consequences of biocentrism can be defended at a logical level, the centrality of problems with valuational frameworks in biocentric ethics leads to ontological ambiguities which contribute to the broader problematic of modem metaphysics. I suggest, however, that this may actually help to thematize the relationship between the metaphysical foundations of environmentalism and its social task. Mysticism and phenomenology, including the concept of the "ecological self," attempt to settle these ambiguities in a dialectical opposition to the technological world view behind the environmental crisis. Whatever ontological stability they achieve, however, is at the expense of being assimilated by the same kind of metaphysical totalization characterizing technological thinking. Unlike anthropocentrism and the stewardship model of environmentalism, nevertheless, these difficulties for biocentrism lead to positive results: the ambiguities in the search for philosophy stability and foundational certainty can act as a cue to the non-metaphysical task of analyzing and resisting technological power. The result may be a "negative ethics," but one that holds out the possibility of confronting the real power relations of technological culture (and the use of ethics within them), rather than pursuing the endless project of discovering the hidden source of value and meaning.
