Why do People Shop?

People shop for many reasons. Some shop because they need things like food or clothes. Others shop for fun, to pass time, or to find new things. Shopping can also be a way to relax and enjoy. Some people even shop as a hobby.

In conclusion, shopping is a common activity that people do for different reasons. Whether it’s in-store or online, shopping can be a fun and exciting experience. It’s a way for people to buy what they need or want, and sometimes, it’s just a way to have fun and relax.

500 Words Essay on Shopping

Shopping is a common activity that we all do. It means buying things we need or want. We can shop for food, clothes, toys, books, and many other things. Shopping can be done in many places like stores, markets, and even online. It is an important part of our daily life.

There are two main types of shopping. The first is necessity shopping. This is when we buy things we need like food, medicine, or school supplies. The second type is luxury shopping. This is when we buy things we want but don’t need. These could be things like a new video game, a fancy dress, or a new toy.

Places for Shopping

There are many places where we can go shopping. Supermarkets are big stores where we can buy many different things like food, clothes, and household items. Smaller stores or shops sell specific things. For example, a toy store sells toys, a book store sells books, and a clothing store sells clothes.

Another place to shop is at a market. Markets can be indoors or outdoors. They often sell fresh food, handmade items, and second-hand goods. Some markets are only open on certain days of the week.

Online shopping is also very popular. This is when we buy things over the internet using a computer or a phone. The things we buy are then delivered to our home.

Why Do We Shop?

We shop for many reasons. We need to buy food to eat and clothes to wear. We also shop to buy gifts for others on special occasions like birthdays or holidays. Sometimes, we shop for fun. It can be exciting to buy new things, especially if they are things we have been saving up for.

Responsible Shopping

Even though shopping can be fun, it’s important to be responsible. This means we should only buy things we need or can afford. We should also think about the environment. For example, we can bring our own bags to the store instead of using plastic bags. We can also choose to buy things that are made in a way that is good for the environment.

Shopping is a part of our everyday life. It can be fun, but it’s also important to be responsible. Whether we’re shopping at a store, a market, or online, we should always think about what we need, what we can afford, and how our choices affect the environment.

How to Be a Better Shopper

By Sunny Sea Gold

The other day an e-mail from Old Navy arrived in my in-box with the subject line “Buy one, get one 50 percent off all activewear. Two days only!” I get these sales e-mails from the store almost weekly, and even though I know exactly what the marketers are doing (trying to get me to spend money I wasn't planning to spend), I usually click—and often end up purchasing—anyway. As a mortgage-owing, self-employed mom with two college funds and a retirement account to think about, I have got to become a smarter, better shopper. You, too? Here's how consumer psychology and marketing researchers suggest we start.

#1 Know that scarcity can sway you—big time. That Old Navy e-mail used a really compelling tactic by highlighting the limited time parameters of the sale—it introduced the idea of scarcity into readers' minds and implied that we could miss out. “Scarcity is very primal,” says Kelly Goldsmith, assistant professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. “When people see the world as running out of anything, the research shows it makes them crazy selfish—it starts to explain things like Black Friday violence.” If something's scarce, our minds tell us it is valuable and we need to snap it up. Even if we really, truly don't.

#2 Prioritize before you shop around. The other week it took me three hours to decide which local hotel to book for an overnight staycation. There were just so many; what if I picked the wrong one and my husband and I ended up having a terrible time? This quandary illustrates one of the biggest problems facing shoppers these days, says Alexander Chernev, a consumer behavior researcher and marketing professor at the Kellogg School: too much choice. “It takes a lot of effort just to consider all the options available—to go out and find them and evaluate each one,” Chernev notes. He points out you don't have to consider all the options, especially if you start with a good sense of your priorities: “You always have to give up one thing for another. Do you prefer better coverage or lower price in health care? In buying a car, do you prefer performance, or comfort, or fuel efficiency?” If you figure out what's most important to you ahead of time and consider only the options that match your priorities, you can keep from foundering in a sea of too many choices.

#3 Make a list—even online. Making a shopping list before hitting a store isn't just about remembering necessary items, it can also help you tune out unwanted marketing messages. Studies on goal activation show that if you make a concrete action plan (such as a shopping list), you're more likely to do what it is you actually set out to do. “Imagine your average trip to the grocery store,” Goldsmith says. “We go with good intentions, to get our bread and milk, then we're bombarded by in-aisle displays and coupons that are meant to arouse us or change our minds about what we actually need.” Although carrying a list may seem like a no-brainer when heading to the store, Goldsmith points out that a shopping list can help just as much online, where banner ads and pop-ups try to entice you with complementary products to those in your cart. A shopping list can keep your goal of shopping wisely at the top of your mind amid all these distractions.

#4 Try to think longer term. In the moment, it can be tough for shoppers to balance what consumer researchers call “vices and virtues.” A vice is anything that brings immediate gratification but costs you long term, whereas virtues may seem costlier now but are much better for you down the road. “In general, vices tend to prevail,” Chernev says. “If you think about how you're going to experience and enjoy the chocolate bar sold near the cash register, you're more likely to succumb.” One way to further boost your resistance to impulsive vice buys is to remind yourself of what you truly value in life. A series of studies in 2013 by psychologists Brandon Schmeichel of Texas A&M University and Kathleen Vohs of the University of Minnesota found that thinking and writing about your goals and values helped people exert more self-control when they were feeling run down or worn out. The next time I can't sleep and I'm tempted to fire up my Amazon app and buy a bunch of adorable baby clothes (on sale!) in the middle of the night, perhaps I'll grab a pen and paper instead and remind myself of what really matters.

Do you hate it when you really need money, but your wallet is empty? No matter how little or how much money you have, spending it wisely is a good idea; it enables you to get the most bang for your buck. Follow these tips to reduce expenditures in key areas and adopt a safer overall approach to shopping.

Spending Basics

Step 1 Create a budget...

  • Organize your purchases by category (food, clothing, entertainment, etc.). Categories with the highest monthly amounts (or monthly amounts you consider surprisingly high) may be good targets for saving money.

Trent Larsen, CFP®

  • Make a preliminary trip before you go on your real shopping trip. Note the prices of several alternatives at one or more stores. Return home without buying anything and decide which products to buy on your second, "real" expedition. The more focused you are and the less time you spend in the store, the less you'll spend.
  • If you are motivated to treat each purchase as an important decision, you will make better decisions.
  • Do not accept free samples or try something on just for fun. Even if you don't plan on purchasing it, the experience can convince you to make a decision now instead of considering it carefully in advance.

Step 3 Avoid impulse purchases.

  • Don't browse store windows or shop for fun. If you're only buying something because you find the act of shopping fun, you'll likely end up spending too much on stuff you don't need. [2] X Research source
  • Don't make purchasing decisions when your judgment is impaired. Alcohol, other drugs, or sleep deprivation [3] X Research source can harm your ability to make sensible decisions. Even shopping while hungry or listening to loud can be a bad idea if you don't stick to your shopping list.

Step 4 Shop alone.

  • Do not take advice from store employees. If you need a question answered, politely listen to their response but ignore any advice on purchasing decisions. If they won't leave you alone, leave the store and return later to make your decision.

Step 5 Pay in full and in cash.

  • Don't bring more cash with you than you need. If you don't have the extra money, you can't spend it. [5] X Research source Similarly, withdraw your weekly budget from an ATM once a week rather than filling up your wallet whenever you run out.

Step 6 Don't be fooled by marketing.

  • Don't buy something on the basis of an advertisement. Whether on television or the product's packaging, treat ads with skepticism [6] X Research source . They are designed to encourage you to spend money and will not provide an accurate portrayal of your options.
  • Don't purchase something just because it's reduced price. [7] X Research source Coupons and sales are great for products you were already planning to buy; purchasing something you don't need just because it's 50% off does not save money!
  • Be aware of pricing tricks. Translate that "$1.99" price into "$2". Judge the price of an item on its own merits, not because it's a "better deal" than another option by the same company. (By making the "worse deal" atrocious value, someone can trick you into paying more for add-ons you don't need).
  • Don't automatically buy the mid priced product within a category. Marketers know that if they want you to buy a high-priced product instead of a low-priced product, they can influence your decision by adding an outrageously expensive product to make the high-priced product intermediate in price and look reasonable in comparison.

Step 7 Wait for sales and discounts.

  • Only use a coupon or take advantage of a discount for an item you absolutely need or decided to buy before the discount occurred. The attraction of a cheaper price is an easy way to get customers to buy something they don't need.
  • Buy products only useful at particular times of year during the offseason. A winter coat should be cheap during summer weather.

Step 8 Do your research.

  • Don't be fooled by lower monthly payments. Calculate the total amount you'll spend (monthly payments x number of months until fully paid) to find out what the cheapest option is.
  • If you're taking out a loan, calculate how much total interest you'll have to pay.

Step 10 Give yourself occasional, inexpensive treats.

  • Set aside a very limited amount of money in your budget for these treats. The goal is to give yourself a small reward to keep your spirits up and prevent a giant splurge later.
  • If your usual methods of treating yourself are expensive, find cheaper alternatives. Take a bubble bath at home instead of going to the spa, or borrow a movie from the library instead of going to the theater.

Spending on Clothing

Step 1 Only purchase what you actually need.

  • Clearing out your closet is not an excuse to buy replacements. The goal is to find out what types of clothing you have enough of, and which you actually need more of.

Step 2 Know when to spend more for quality.

  • Remember that price doesn't guarantee quality. Research what the longest lasting brands are rather than assume the most expensive option is best.
  • Similarly, wait until the item you need goes on sale when possible. Remember not to use sales an excuse to purchase items you don't require.

Step 3 Shop at thrift stores.

  • Thrift stores in more affluent neighborhoods usually receive higher-quality donations.

Step 4 If you can't find it in a thrift store, buy cheap, generic brands.

Spending on Food and Beverages

Step 1 Compile a weekly menu and shopping list.

  • This will not only prevent you from making impulse buys at the grocery store, but also prevent wasting money due to food waste, a major expenditure for many people. [9] X Research source If you find yourself throwing away food, reduce the size of your planned meals.

Step 2 Learn tips for saving money on food

  • Pack a lunch at home instead and bring it with you to work or class.
  • Fill a water bottle using your tap at home instead of buying expensive bottled water.
  • Similarly, if you drink coffee frequently, buy a cheap French press and save money by preparing it at home.

Saving Cash Wisely

Step 1 Save Money...

  • Establish an emergency fund.
  • Avoid unnecessary fees.
  • Meal plan your meals for the week

Step 2 Break free of...

  • Will I use this item regularly? Make sure you'll drink all that milk before it goes bad, or that you have enough summer months left to wear that skirt more than a couple times.
  • Do I lack something that serves the same purpose? Beware specialized products whose role can be performed by basic items you already have. [13] X Research source You probably don't need ultra-specialized kitchen equipment, or a special workout outfit when sweatpants and a T-shirt will work just as well. [14] X Research source
  • Will this item change my life for the better? This is a tricky question, but purchases that encourage "bad habits" or cause you to neglect important parts of your life should be avoided.
  • Will I miss this item if I don't buy it?
  • Will this item make me happy?

Step 4 Prune your hobbies.

Tips from our Readers

  • Do your research before buying something new: is it worth spending the money? What's the best value you can find? Resist automatically going for the cheapest item you can find, though, since cheap stuff is usually low-quality, meaning you'll likely have to spend more money replacing it in the long run.
  • You can still enjoy a nice meal out while saving money. For instance, instead of paying for a drink, stick to water or hot tea and lemon, since it's typically free. Skip the appetizer, or split your food with a friend, since restaurant portions tend to be pretty big anyway.
  • Be cautious about who you loan money to, and try not to loan what you can't afford to lose. If friends or relatives ask you if they could borrow some money, try to keep track of what you've loaned them, and maybe come up with a payment plan with them if it's a large sum.

This essay on think before you shop talks Importance of thinking before shopping, What things to be considered before shopping, Benefits of shopping wisely, how it is important to learn the art of calculated shopping. This essay is in simple words and easy to understand English, for children and students.

Essay on think before you Shop

The shopomania among people has given birth to a new slogan- think before you shop. It means that one should think about the pros and cons of shopping before indulging in it. There are many factors which should be considered before going for shopping.

Think before You Shop, Meaning & Concept:

The phrase ‘think before you shop’ is often used to encourage people to consider their purchases carefully and not to impulse buy. It is also used more broadly to suggest that people should think about the consequences of their actions before they do something.

The phrase is likely to have come into common usage in the late 20th century with the growth of consumerism. It is now used widely in relation to issues such as sustainability and ethical consumerism. The phrase can also be found in relation to personal finance and budgeting advice, with the suggestion being that people should think about whether they really need something before they spend money on it.

It is also used in relation to responsible gambling, with the suggestion being that people should think about the risks before they gamble. The phrase is sometimes shortened to ‘think before you buy’ or ‘think before you act’.

When it comes to shopping, it is important to think before you buy. This means considering what you need and whether you can afford it. It is also important to think about the impact your purchase will have on the environment and on other people.

If you take the time to think before you shop, you will be more likely to make wise choices that are good for you, the planet, and other people.

Here are some things to consider before you shop:

1. Do I really need this?

2. Can I afford it?

3. How will this purchase impact the environment?

4. How will this purchase impact other people?

5. Is there a better way to get what I need?

If you take the time to consider these questions before you shop, you will be more likely to make choices that are good for you, the planet, and other people.

The benefits of shopping wisely

1. You will save money:

If you take the time to think about your purchases, you will be less likely to impulse buy. Impulse buying often leads to people spending more money than they intended to.

2. You will reduce your impact on the environment:

If you think about the environmental impact of your purchases, you will be more likely to buy products that are eco-friendly. This will help to reduce your impact on the planet.

3. You will help to improve the lives of other people:

If you think about the social and ethical implications of your purchases, you will be more likely to buy products that have been ethically sourced. This means that the people who made the product were treated fairly and paid a living wage.

4. You will be more likely to get what you need:

If you take the time to consider your needs, you will be less likely to end up with items that you do not need or that do not meet your needs.

5. You will feel good about your purchases:

When you shop wisely, you can feel good about your purchases knowing that they are not harming the environment or taking advantage of other people.

Shopping wisely is not always easy, but it is worth taking the time to think about your purchases. The benefits are clear: you will save money, reduce your impact on the environment, help to improve the lives of other people, and feel good about your choices. So next time you are about to make a purchase, take a moment to think before you buy.

Shop Smarter: 7 Money-Saving Shopping Strategies

this image is not available

1. Make a list. Regardless of what you're buying, make a plan before you shop. If you're looking for gifts, identify who you're buying for, have an idea of what you want to spend, and have a few gift ideas in mind that you can purchase within your budget. If you're shopping for yourself, take inventory of what you already have and what you really need before you hit the stores.

3. Know your shopping season. The best way to save big on seasonal or holiday merchandise may be to wait until the end of the season — but there are plenty of ways to save when items traditionally go on sale throughout the year. For example, June is a popular month for weddings, so deals can be found on dish sets, utensils, and other kitchen supplies. Since home improvement can take a backseat to vacationing during the summer for many, you can get great deals on home repair merchandise like paint, hardware, tools, and carpeting in June, while July is a great time to buy new appliances, including air conditioners. Find more seasonal shopping strategies in Women & Co.'s month-by-month guide to the best deals.

4. Give yourself a waiting period for major purchases and splurges. If you're browsing and see something you like, bookmark the web page, pin it on your Pinterest board, or email a photo of the item to yourself — then walk away. If you're still longing for it a few days later, it may be worth the purchase if it fits within your budget.

5. Let someone else comparison-shop for you. If you have your heart set on a specific item, you may not want to wait too long for prices to go down, only to find out that it's sold out in the size or style you need. Look for a service that can help you save AFTER you've checked out, like the Citi Price Rewind service available to eligible Citi cardholders. Just register your covered purchase and Citi Price Rewind will search products across hundreds of retailers' sites. If the same item is found and is at least $25 lower than what you paid within 30 calendar days of your purchase, Citi Price Rewind can refund you the difference, up to $250.

6. Add it up. It's easy to get tempted by a steady stream of emails, texts and status updates offering major discounts on your favorite brands — but before you get lured in to making a purchase by the promise of a huge price cut, take a look at all of the extra charges that could potentially add up, like shipping costs, return policies that only offer store credit, restocking fees, minimum purchases, and discount exclusions. Make sure that you're buying from a reliable retailer or online seller, and keep a record of every transaction.

7. Don't leave the promo code box empty. Always do a quick search for coupon codes or rewards that you can use before you check out. Take a look at the retailer's promo section, app, catalog, or social channels for discounts that might be available, check your credit card rewards to see if you have any points that can be used towards your purchase, and do a simple online search for offers that may be posted on other sites, like FreeShipping.org. There's no reason to pay full price when a few minutes may save you the cost of shipping or a discount off some of the items in your cart.

Getting to ‘Wow’: Consumers Describe What Makes a Great Shopping Experience

July 8, 2009 • 9 min read.

New Wharton research finds that 35% of shoppers have had an extraordinary -- or "wow" -- retail experience in the past six months. But in order to hit that mark, retailers must deliver on as many as 10 different elements of the shopping experience simultaneously. Among the strongest drivers of customer loyalty: brand experience, courteous employees and knowledgeable salespeople. Expediting the shopping process ranked high, too.

shopping wisely essay

Paula Courtney found “wow” when she took her daughter to the employee washroom at her local grocery store. A sign by the door instructed workers to remain physically by the side of any customer experiencing a problem until that problem was resolved. Later, when Courtney was in the checkout line, the cashier noticed Courtney’s blueberries were squishy. The cashier insisted on walking back to the produce section to find a fresh box.

For Courtney, chief executive of The Verde Group , a Toronto retail research and consulting firm, that was a “wow” shopping experience.

New Wharton research finds that 35% of shoppers have had an extraordinary — or wow — retail experience in the past six months. But in order to hit that mark, retailers must deliver on as many as 10 different elements of the shopping experience simultaneously. Retailers are rewarded when shoppers tell others about their experience. “Peoples’ expectations are pretty high. It’s easy to [fall short of those expectations], and hard to eclipse [bad experiences, even] with something that’s over-the-top,” says Wharton marketing professor Stephen Hoch . “Bitching and moaning is more common than praise.”

Wharton’s Jay H. Baker Retailing Initiative teamed with Verde and the Retail Council of Canada to discover how retailers can create an extraordinary experience for shoppers. In an online survey, 1,006 shoppers in the United States and Canada were asked: “Can you think of a shopping experience that you had in the past six months or so that was especially great, in that the experience created delight and surprise for you in any way?”

A report based on the research, titled “ Discovering ‘WOW’ — A Study of Great Retail Shopping Experiences in North America ,”points to five major areas that contribute to a great shopping experience:

  • Engagement: being polite, genuinely caring and interested in helping, acknowledging and listening.
  • Executional excellence: patiently explaining and advising, checking stock, helping to find products, having product knowledge and providing unexpected product quality.
  • Brand Experience: exciting store design and atmosphere, consistently great product quality, making customers feel they’re special and that they always get a deal.
  • Expediting: being sensitive to customers’ time on long check-out lines, being proactive in helping speed the shopping process.
  • Problem Recovery: helping resolve and compensate for problems, upgrading quality and ensuring complete satisfaction.

In all, respondents mentioned 28 elements of a great experience, such as salespeople who “immediately acknowledged you” or “could easily explain a product to you” or “seemed genuine.”

Pulling It All Together

Courtney says the typical wow experience has 10 of those elements at the same time. Further complicating the mission for retailers is the fact that the most important elements vary among individuals. “It’s like a perfect storm,” she says.

Retailers can focus on creating a “bedrock,” or platform, based on the five major pillars of retail satisfaction to increase the probability of creating a wow experience. According to the research, four in five shoppers will tell an average of three other people about a wow experience.

Brand experience and engagement are the strongest drivers of loyalty, according to the survey. The top response was related to engagement, with 63% of those reporting that during their great shopping experience, store employees were “very polite and courteous.” Salespeople who were knowledgeable about the product in the store got the second-highest response at 55%. As for execution, about half of those experiencing a wow shopping trip stressed store employees’ familiarity with products, their advice and the level of interest in the customers’ needs as essential to a great shopping experience. Slightly fewer — two in five — pointed to surprisingly great product quality and store representatives who go out of their way to check stock as crucial elements of exceptional shopping.

Brand experience includes store design and atmosphere, consistently great product quality, making customers feel they’re special and the sense that customers always get a deal. Hoch says this element is somewhat “fuzzy” because chain stores, which account for the majority of shopper visits, often provide trendy merchandise and stylish store environments, but also run the risk of projecting sameness. Earlier research by the Baker Center and Verde found that shoppers reported “mall malaise” — boredom with the similarity of specialty chain stores. “Most chains are cookie-cutter,” says Hoch. “Even if the stores themselves are different from each other, the same store is in every mall. It’s probably a lot easier for a small merchant to provide this brand experience. Unfortunately, if people see the same look over and over again, they find it mundane.”

Speeding the shopping process is another important trait of a great retailer, according to the survey. Three of four aspects of the expediting pillar — helping customers complete their shopping quickly, and being sensitive to time and check-out lines — are rated as “very important” by half of those who encountered each during the shopping experience they cited as “great.” Hoch says many people, especially women, no longer approach shopping as a pleasant task. “Shopping used to be a happy, social event — and it can still be — but more often now it’s part of a larger trip, and you are trying to get a lot accomplished in a certain period of time.”

The ability of a retailer to resolve a problem once it crops up is another key factor in determining whether a shopper will have a great experience. One in four respondents mention that a store representative stayed with them until their problem was resolved. Fewer than one in 10 said they were compensated for a store error, or that a store representative broke company policy to resolve a problem or automatically offered a product upgrade.

Courtney stresses it is important for retailers to have a clear, simple problem resolution process. “The biggest issue is problem ownership,” she says. “If all you can do is train everybody on one thing related to problem-solving it would be getting people to own the problem and not pass it off.” Hoch says that while problem resolution was not as great a factor as some of the other five elements, one common thread emerged from the research: “A person stepped up to the plate and figured out how to solve the problem.” Having that experience changed the consumer’s state of mind from helplessness to, “‘Boy, somebody came up and helped me.’ We all like a hero, but it doesn’t happen very often,” Hoch notes.

The research also indicates that the components of a great retail experience vary somewhat by the age, gender and nationality of shoppers. Younger consumers, aged 18 to 30, were most likely to recall having a great shopping experience. Those over age 50 were more likely to mention store representatives who seemed genuine and caring. They also liked being acknowledged and treated courteously. Hoch notes that younger shoppers’ retail experiences are colored by greater comfort with multitasking and familiarity with the Internet, making them more transaction-oriented than relationship-oriented and less tied to brick-and-mortar stores.

Canadian shoppers cite “getting a deal” as a more important part of the brand experience than do shoppers in the U.S. The Canadians also put more emphasis on an exciting store atmosphere or design. Courtney argues that understanding differences across national lines is critical for global retailers. “It shows the need to recognize the customer who shops in your retail footprint. Creating a ‘one-size fits all’ doesn’t work,” she says. “There are some significant differences between Canadians and Americans. More important, there are age and gender differences that are relevant to every customer you serve and are easy to identify.”

The best way to lay the foundation for customers to have great retail experiences is for store owners to hire and train staff who are able to take basic information about shopper preferences and convert that knowledge to customized service. “If you are a mass merchandiser with no training program, the likelihood of creating wow is slim to none,” says Courtney. “Hiring policy is core to a business that creates ‘wow.'”

In the current recessionary climate, price is important to consumers, but only one factor in the overall wow shopping experience. The researchers found that of those experiencing a wow shopping trip, 43% said having consistently excellent products was a factor in their recent great retail experiences. That was the top response in regard to brand experience, followed by “getting a deal,” which was cited by 31% of respondents. “We have created a value-based consumer,” says Courtney.

While the Great Depression led to an era of penny pinching, today’s economic crisis is leading consumers to focus more on value than price, she adds. “With credit cards and retail and telecom, we are seeing value-based buying…. People are being more scrupulous about where they buy and what they buy. More educated consumers are looking for a better value in everything.”

Still, even in a challenging economic environment, she says, retailers are able to deliver a wow experience if they plan to provide the basic elements of a great shopping experience. “Despite shortages of resources and store closings, it is still possible to delight and surprise,” she contends. “The possibility exists when retailers have everything in place.”

Many Young People Nowadays Regard Shopping As A Hobby | Band 8 IELTS Essay Sample

by Manjusha Nambiar · August 10, 2019

In the past, shopping was a routine domestic task. Many people nowadays regard it as a hobby. To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Band 8 IELTS essay sample

Shopping was considered as daily routine work in earlier times; however, recently it has become a leisure activity for some people. In my opinion, this trend has more negative impact on the public than positive.

It is true that these days people have busy schedules and hence they go shopping with their family to spend some time together and buy clothes and other necessary things. The advent of malls has also played a role in making shopping a pastime activity. At the malls people can find all that they need under the same roof. They can also eat food and even watch movies or play games.  In fact, shopping became so convenient in the last decade that it is now a hobby.

On the flip side / On the down side, due to availability of numerous products and increased comfort level in shopping centers, people tend to spend more money. For example, many people buy something which fascinates them even if it has no use in their lives. Because of credit availability, people do not have to pay the whole amount upfront. Unfortunately, this may land them in deep debts. In addition, youngsters spend a lot of time in shopping malls as they are influenced by the advertisements whereas, this time can be utilized wisely in sports.

To conclude, I would like to say that although shopping is essential to some extent it has many negative impacts on individuals. Hence, people should go for shopping only when  it is necessary. Shopping should not be considered as a hobby as it could lead to some undesirable circumstances.

shopping wisely essay

Shopping was treated as a regular house-hold activity in the earlier times. In the modern times, it is no longer considered as a task to fulfill the domestic necessities but rather a hobby to spend the free time. I think this is not a positive trend as it encourages the younger generation to squander the money for unnecessary things.

People in the past scheduled their shopping activity according to their rising needs for different commodities like groceries, clothing and electronic devices. It was never done as a pass-time activity to entertain themselves. In contrast, today’s world has started thinking that shopping can be done as a hobby. Young people go out for shopping to get rid of their boredom. Many reasons can be attributed to this behavior. Firstly, the modern times have seen a huge surge in the establishment of shopping malls. These malls have got many options for entertainment like movies and games along with shopping centers. Consequently, people who visit these places to explore the various entertainment avenues get wooed by the discounts and end up shopping. This habit seeps into the mind of the youngsters rapidly and becomes a hobby. Secondly, the younger generation has the habit of boasting about the shopping they do and owning of latest electronic gadgets, clothing and accessories has become the latest fashion. Due to this, people end up shopping frequently for the stuff which is not really needed.

This trend of regarding shopping as a hobby is not at all positive owing to the various drawbacks. To start with, it spoils the mindset of young children and they do not value money and spend lavishly. Additionally, when the funds get exhausted and one cannot afford shopping as a hobby, the individual gets into frustration. Most importantly, people end up with minimum savings in the later years which may prove to be detrimental for their well-being.

In conclusion, I feel that shopping should not be treated as a hobby. It has to be done carefully as per the requirements with a proper financial planning.

This seems band 7 to me.

shopping wisely essay

In the modern society, a large number of people consider shopping as a leisure activity whereas, for the past generation it is a part of their daily routine. To a large extent I disagree with the opinion as shopping become a financial burden to people.

The old people take consider shopping as the day to day activity. By changing this behaviour to shopping as a hobby it brings many problems. Firstly, shopping brings financial problems to families. Many family leaders take their family to shopping in weekends and it become a hobby now. Lately it automatically lead them to financial problems. For example, due to the increasing cost of products and the tendency to buy more things may be it is unnecessary cannot be affordable by many families. Secondly, the too much introduction of new shopping malls that provide all kinds of entertainments to people. To illustrates more, in malls we can find movies, food, games and all such things.

Moreover, the younger generation has the habit of boasting about the shopping they do and owning of latest electronic gadgets, clothing and accessories has become the latest fashion. Due to this, people end up shopping frequently for the stuff which is not really needed. However, the only advantage of shopping as a hobby is that of it brings relaxation to the all members of the family from their monotonous lifestyle. They can spend time with each other and enjoy time.

To conclude, shopping is essential as a daily routine rather than a hobby. The only advantage of consider shopping as leisure is relaxation from daily life style

This seems band 6.5 to me.

shopping wisely essay

Since time immemorial, human beings have indulged in shopping. For some people, it is no longer confined to only buying essential products, but has turned into a mere pastime. I strongly believe that this is not a positive trend and can rather have multiple negative consequences.

People indulge in shopping as a hobby for several reasons. Firstly, with the advent of various e-commerce websites and applications, shopping has become quite convenient. People scroll through these applications, with no careful thought about their buying needs and they buy unnecessary items based on suggestions and recommendations made by others. Secondly, social media has greatly influenced the youngsters and they are massively swayed by the advertisements available on the internet. For instance, many people have the massive urge to buy items that they do not need, but is endorsed by their beloved celebrities, even though this would, most of the times, prove to be of no use to them.

This indulgence in quick and easy gratification, has various demerits and long-lasting impacts. Firstly, shopping just as a hobby is quite expensive. It results in extreme expenditure, resulting in low value for money as well as lowered bank balance. Secondly, it makes a person severely dependent and takes away valuable time that they could have spent on other vital activities. Furthermore, there is ample scientific evidence to bolster the unequivocal and irrefutable argument, that wide expenditure on insignificant items is a meta-problem which can exacerbate other problems, like lowered self-esteem and diminished self-worth due to extreme dependence on materialistic possessions.

To conclude, many people indulge in shopping, and consider this as a means to pass time which can have numerous repercussions. I strongly believe that this growing trend can prove to be immensely negative in the times to come, as it can lower the self-confidence and deplete a person of both wealth and valuable time.

Being a Smart Shopper Is a Skill Essay Example

  • Type: Essay

The most important thing to me when shopping is not the things I buy, but what I get for my money. There are many things to keep in mind as I shop. I have to think of the things I need, if I’m shopping wisely and not get caught up in all of the TV ads and if I am within my budget. But with a little focus and discipline, I know I can do it. After all, I come from a long line of generations before me that have done just that. Most importantly, are the things I need. There are my food, bath products, clothes and school supplies.

I have to have these to get through my week every day. Obviously, I have to eat and have clothes for my overall he

alth. My bath products are for maintaining good hygiene, which helps with my health and my self esteem. And last, my school supplies for a good education. So many times I have to stay focused on what is on my list and not get caught up in all of the TV ads. There are so many out there, even on radio and in the store, that my emotions can run away with me and direct me exactly where the advertiser wanted me to go; right to their products.

It’s so exciting to see new and fun things that come out in the stores, that it’s easy to forget what I came for in the first place. So I have to be smart and remind myself I can always look at it another time. That’s when I take a

deep breath, walk away and go back to my list. As always, I must remember to stay within my budget. Even though it’s not always easy, it is possible. There are so many dollars I can spend and not a cent more. So, with that in mind, I look for my items at the lowest possible price.

There are some things I have to spend more money on because I know that the quality is where the value is. Unfortunately, I learned that lesson the hard way. It is just a matter of putting the important things first and sometimes there is a little left over for a nice surprise or to save for that special something. Being a smart shopper, like anything else, is an acquired skill. I just remind myself in my own way to get the things I need, don’t get caught up in all of the TV ads and stay within my budget. Every once in a while, I get a great thing at a fabulous price and it makes it all worth the effort.

The trend of online shopping has increased in recent times with the increase of e-commerce and digital technology. With just a single click, you can shop for everything by sitting at your home as per your choice, convenience and budget. This essay on online shopping will help students learn about the pros and cons of online shopping. We have also compiled a list of CBSE Essays on different topics to help them improve their essay-writing skills. These essays will also help them improve their scores on the English exam.

What Does Online Shopping Mean?

Online shopping is the activity of buying products and services over the internet using a web browser or mobile app. It means buyers have to go online to reach a seller’s website and then select the product they want to purchase. The buyer can pay for the goods and services either online with a credit or debit card or upon delivery. Online shopping sites are also known by many other names such as e-shop, e-web-store, e-store, internet shop, web-store, web-shop, virtual store and online store. An online shop creates a physical analogy for buying products or services. Some of the famous online retailing corporations which facilitate the experience of online shopping are Amazon, eBay, Flipkart, Myntra, etc.

Online shopping is a growing area of the digital world and technology. Establishing a store on the Internet gives various options to consumers. With the growth of online shopping, most businesses have started selling their products online. Now, just having physical stores is not enough in this fast-paced world. Having online store interfaces for consumers has also become essential for running a business in the current scenario.

Benefits of Online Shopping

There are numerous advantages of online shopping. People feel more convenient while shopping online. They can shop from anywhere at their own convenient time through easy and safe payment methods. Online shopping has empowered consumers with various advantages such as convenience and time-saving, lower search costs, better product selection, lower prices, etc. One of the biggest benefits of online shopping is that you can buy the items you want with just a single click. Online stores are open 24 hours a day and are accessible from any location with an internet connection.

Online stores carry more variations and provide more varieties of a product as compared to traditional stores. This is because online stores don’t need to attractively display their items on shelves, and they can keep a larger amount of inventory on hand. They might also have small amounts of each item since they don’t need to display them and can order more from their supplier as needed.

Online shops tend to provide more information about items for sale than you would get in a physical store. Product descriptions most often include a description from the manufacturer, another description from the vendor, specific technical and size details, reviews from professional magazines and journals, and reviews from people who have bought the product. Having all this information available when you are considering a purchase makes you a more informed consumer without having to perform extra research by yourself.

Online stores are not burdened by the costs of running a physical store, such as the rent of the physical premises and wages of sales staff. The cost savings by online stores lead to lower pricing on the internet, passing on cost savings to shoppers. The internet encourages online vendors to compete with one another by lowering prices.

Disadvantages of Online Shopping

The benefits of shopping online also come with potential risks and dangers. When you shop online, you can’t touch or try out the product. You have to depend upon product pictures only. You can’t buy the product instantly. If you don’t get the product in hand immediately after payment, you have to wait for delivery, which can take days to weeks. There is no guarantee that you will get the product in its original shape; it might get damaged on the way. Sometimes, the product is very different from the pictures and description due to various reasons and also has poor quality. If, after receiving the package, expectations weren’t met, you need to go through a returns process which can be time-consuming. Apart from these, there is also a chance of security threats from online shopping. If the site is not secured, you have a risk of losing your card information.

Online shopping is one of the convenient ways of purchasing different products. However, there are some products which are better if they are purchased from physical stores. So, in the future, we can expect online stores to improve their technology, making way for a much easier and faster shopping experience.

Compare and Contrast Essay: Online Shopping vs. In-Person Shopping

Over the recent year shopping has taken two turns, the have the most classic form in person shopping and online shopping. They may be similar in their basics but online shopping and in person shopping are different based on the experience, time consumption, and the variety and availability of the items. They may be but the environment changes the situation a person is in and the interaction one has go through home or in an actual store.

Experience is a major component in shopping be it experience with the way a shop or way a website is set up. Amazon and target are two good examples in the difference between online and in person. While shopping in amazon.com consumers can expect to find almost anything with ease and minimal problems, but there can be other factors that can lead to problems. For example, consumers internet can be slow, or their phones could be cut off because they forgot to pay their bill. In person shopping does not have problem with slow internet or forgotten phone bills, any shopper can browse and find what they need or finds something that they might have needed but forgot. But in person shopping also has their downside for instance a shopper may forget the list of items they need or run into other fellow customer that will bother them believing them to be an associate of the store. In the end online shopping experience has a better impact on the shopper.

Another component is time consumption. Many shoppers are workers as well and need to organize their day to be early to their jobs and have time for their shopping for home necessity. Online shopping is time consuming but can be controlled because it can be done from anywhere. A consumer can be at home shopping and getting ready for work and still make it in time. But of course, there are consumer that get stuck and stay online shopping locked onto their screen looking for items they need or just want. In person shopping is good because you can browse on your way to work early in the morning and get your necessities and leave easily. But there is the possibility of getting stuck in traffic. Traffic can happen at any given time and a shopper can shop and then find out they are stuck and would be late for work. Given the time consumption of each online shopping comes to the top for less time consumption because traffic wouldn’t faze it at all.

Lastly it comes down to variety and availability. Variety and availability brings in more consumer to look and buy for items they need. Online shopping can have variety to the max. You have many shops at your disposal and can move to each site with ease. The chance of online shops to not have the product are low and if they don’t have what a consumer need then their other websites. With shopping in person, the chance of items being out of stock are higher than online. The shopper then must leave and go to another store where they may or may not have the item they need. In online shopping a consumer can find almost exactly what they need no problem but in person shopping chance are almost less than half of online shopping making online shopping more convenient.

In the grand finally of online shopping and in person shopping consumers can have better experiences online shopping. Time consumption would go in favor for online because of its flexibility of location and speed of looking for items. For variety and availability online shopping come out as more favorable.
