APPLICATIONS

Boston City Campus (Pty) Ltd strives to enhance, uplift and continuously improve the quality of education and training in Southern Africa through the commitment to: “Education. For Life.”

This mission is supported in official pronouncements, which make it clear that “At the centre of the transformation agenda in education is the principle of lifelong learning and the need to rectify the inequities of the past through increased access to Higher Education, which is essential to promoting skills and human resource development and a pre-condition for facilitating social and economic transformation” (CHE, 2008).

NOTE: Boston City Campus offers students the possibility of registering for any module in either Higher Education Programmes or Occupational Programmes as Occasional Students. Students who choose to pursue this route of study, elect to enrol in modules for non-qualification purposes. In other words, Occasional Students are not intending to complete a qualification. Their interest is in professional and personal development. Should students who complete modules as Occasional Students wish to enrol in one of Boston’s programmes, the guiding principles of Boston’s policy on the Recognition of Prior Learning and/or Credit Accumulation and Transfer will apply.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Programme-specific admission requirements are determined by the Board of Directors, Academic Committee and where applicable as prescribed by the various Institutes, Quality Councils and SAQA.

Boston’s provision of a wide range of Short Learning Programmes, well established within the Higher Education system globally, is very important in contributing to meeting the objectives of lifelong learning, correcting inequalities and underscoring aspirations. These offerings serve the following key purposes:

  • Enabling access to Higher Education to those who were denied access and/or who may not meet the formal entry requirements for Higher Education; and,
  • Meeting the needs of employees and professionals to continually upgrade their skills and knowledge.

Boston has, wherever possible, taken into consideration all policies pertaining to these different scopes of study; however, where any institute other than Boston is concerned, additional policies and procedures, rules and regulations may apply. Please ensure you enquire at the Boston Tuition/Support Centre/Site regarding such issues and that you have all respective documentation pertaining to the specific institute, particularly:

  • Membership application, fees and due dates.
  • Examination application forms, fees and due dates.
  • Examination/assessment dates and venues.
  • Examination/assessment booking, cancellation and resubmission policies and procedures.
  • If a student’s Boston account is in arrears, no external assessment bookings will be allowed to be made. In addition to this, if a student has made payment arrangements, no bookings will be allowed until such time as the account is fully up to date.

While Boston City Campus (Pty) Ltd staff endeavour to ensure streamlined administration in this regard, the onus lies with the student to ensure that prescribed dates and deadlines are met in order for Boston to submit necessary documentation correctly and timeously.

ADMISSION OF NON-SOUTH AFRICAN RESIDENT STUDENTS

Admission of non-South African resident students is subject to the conditions set out in the Refugee Act 130 of 1998 (relevant to amendments), the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 (and with consideration to any amendments or directives relating to Immigration Regulations). The success of a non-South African resident application depends on both the confirmation of academic acceptance and the obtaining of the necessary statutory documentation and state approval.

Prospective students may enquire at any of the Boston regional Tuition/Support Centre/Site to obtain a quotation on the curriculum and fees of a programme.

Please consult the Boston Prospectus on the availability of programmes offered at the various Boston Tuition/Support Centres/Sites. Certain programmes are only available at selected Tuition/Support Centres/Sites. Quotations will provide prospective students with various payment options to suit their needs. Quotations are only valid for a period of 30 days. On expiry, a prospective student will have to request a new quotation from a Sales Consultant at a Boston Tuition/Support Centre/Site.

The relevant Banking details will be available from the Boston Tuition/Support Centre/Site where the quotation was generated.

On acceptance of a quotation, a student will be registered with the Institution and a formal invoice will be provided to the student. Please make reference to the terms and conditions as contained in the Boston Registration Contract and the Student Information and Rulebook.

REGISTRATIONS

Registration Process

Boston Short Learning Programme and Occupational Students cannot register online and must complete, sign and submit a hard-copy of the Registration Contract at a Boston Branch.

Boston City Campus (Pty) Ltd: Digital Learning Students may register online to enrol for Micro and Nano SLP-courses.

Upon registration, a student acknowledges:

  • that she/he has read and understands the information contained in the Registration Contract, the Student Information and Rulebook and, where relevant, the programme Fact Sheet; and,
  • that she/he undertakes to be bound by the general rules, policies, regulations and procedures of the Institution, including the Code of Conduct. (In the case of all minors, parents or guardians must also sign and submit a hard copy of the agreement).

By signing the Registration Contract, students and/or parents or guardians signal their acceptance of the Fees Invoice. Furthermore, the confirmation of a student’s enrolment at Boston requires that students submit themselves to the rules and regulations of the Institution and that they (or their parent(s)/guardian) undertake to pay the prescribed fees associated with their enrolment at Boston. External Fees, associated with Institute Learning Programmes, as defined in the Prospectus (Assessment and Tuition Fees), are linked to the prevailing exchange rate and may consequently vary.

The registration fee and the first instalment of the tuition fee, as determined annually by the Institution, are payable upon registration.

After registration, students are obliged to pay the outstanding fees due on or before the dates stipulated by the Institution and set out in the final Fees invoice.

Students who cancel their registration within the 7-day cooling off period are not entitled to reimbursement of the registration fee. Students who cancel their registration after the 7-day cooling off period are not entitled to reimbursement of the registration fee and remain liable for the tuition fees in accordance with the Registration Contract.

The registration of students is valid for the applicable registration period only and lapses on expiry of this period. No student will be permitted to continue with studies outside of the stipulated contract period with the Institution. Failure to complete a qualification within the contract period will require a student to re-register with the institution to complete their qualification.

Students register for a programme as contained in the Institution’s Annual Prospectus and with special reference to the Registration Contract Regulations and Terms and Conditions.

The Boston Board of Directors and Academic Committee may determine the minimum number of students who should register for a programme or a module for it to be offered on a particular campus and/or in a particular year.

Students register for a programme and are subject to the academic regulations that applied at the time of first registration for that particular programme, provided that:

(a) Where the regulations are amended, students who commenced their studies under the previous regulations and who have not interrupted their studies may complete their studies according to the previous regulations;

(b) If the new regulations are beneficial to them, students may complete their studies under these new regulations;

(c) The Academic Committee may set special transitional arrangements, in respect of programmes where a change has been approved, and determine a date on which new regulations will be phased in and previous regulations phased out.

Students who were registered for a programme and who failed to renew their registration for that programme in the following academic semester or year, or who have interrupted their studies, forfeit the right to complete their studies according to the previous regulations, provided that:

(a) Registration for experiential learning or work-integrated learning for the academic period following the period in question will be regarded as a renewal of registration;

(b) The Registrar and Academic Executive/Head may, in exceptional circumstances, allow students to continue their studies according to conditions that may be determined.

When regulations are amended, the Academic Committee may formulate transitional regulations for students to complete a specific programme according to the new regulations.

Application information

Find out about requirements, fees, and deadlines

A first-year applicant is a student who will graduate from high school in the 2023-24 academic year. A first-year applicant may also be a student who graduated from high school but has not earned more than eight college/university credits. We review each application with a level of thoroughness and thoughtfulness that reflects the time and effort you have invested in Boston College. In making admission decisions, we consider course selection, performance assessment, standardized test scores (optional for the 2023-24 cycle), application essays, extracurricular activities, and recommendations.

The Boston College community welcomes transfer students. A transfer applicant must complete a minimum of nine college or university credits post-secondary education and prior to the admission deadline for the semester they wish to apply. Primary emphasis is placed on the college record. However, the high school record, SAT and/or ACT test scores (optional for the 2023-24), essays, recommendations, activities, and work experience are also critical components of the application. In recent years, students most successful in the transfer admission process had very strong records from both high school and college.

The Ultimate Guide to Applying to Boston College

Nestled in Boston’s suburb Chestnut Hill sits Boston College—lovingly referred to as “BC” by its students—the oldest institute of higher education that operates out of the Boston area. Founded with Jesuit values, the college offers its students more than just a place to learn and study. On its website, in its literature, and through its faculty and staff, the school encourages its students to pursue what they love, reflecting inward to identify their passions while focusing outward on the ways that their actions impact others.

A co-educational, liberal arts school, BC enrolls about 14,000 students total, and roughly 2,300 students per undergraduate class. It is comprised of eight separate schools within the college as a whole, trains 31 different NCAA Division I athletics teams, and promises a low teacher to student ratio in order to give its students small classes and optimal attention and mentoring. If you are looking to enter a community that is spirited, based on Jesuit values, and encouraging of exploration—academic and otherwise—you should consider applying to BC. And if you’ve already decided that you will apply, here’s a thorough how-to guide.

Let’s Talk About Boston College

Founded in 1863, BC has moved from its original location in Boston’s South End to quieter Chestnut Hill, but still boasts supreme proximity to America’s lively college city. While students of the college are encouraged to explore the nearby city, their campus offers more than enough entertainment by way of sports events, a flourishing arts culture, community service opportunities, and almost 300 student-run clubs and organizations.

BC offers its students specialized training in a wide range of fields thanks to the four schools that make up the undergraduate College. These schools are the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences , the Carroll School of Management , the Lynch School of Education , and the Connell School of Nursing . Common undergrad majors include economics, political science, psychology, English, marketing, history, and nursing. However, students are encouraged to explore their interests for the first two years of their time at BC and do not declare a major until the end of sophomore year. BC also provides its students with a wide range of resources at its Career Center , which offers guidance and help to students with everything from procuring post-college employment to deciding what major to declare as a freshman.

When you apply to BC, you will need to decide which of its four schools you want to attend and apply specifically to that one. If you are unsure of what your interests are, and you think that they may fall anywhere within the arts, humanities, or sciences, the college advises that you apply to the Morissey College of Arts and Sciences. Meanwhile, students who are applying to Carroll, Lynch, or Connell should know that they would be allowed to pursue secondary majors in Morissey were they to accept and pursue their offers at the pre-professional school. The opposite is not possible (i.e. students in Morissey may not pursue a secondary major in one of the pre-professional schools).

Paying for a BC Education: Tuition, Financial Aid, Deadlines, and Other Facts

BC’s undergraduate tuition currently costs $62,820, including housing and dining fees. The school states that it is committed to providing aid to all students who demonstrate need, and 67% of all students at the College today receive financial aid.

If you are unable to pay out of pocket, BC offers need-based financial aid to prospective students. For reference, you should become well acquainted with BC’s Financial Aid Website . The deadlines for applying for financial aid will differ based on the deadline you have chosen for your application to the college (Early Decision or Regular Decision).

If you plan to apply for need-based financial aid, you will need to fill out a few forms: the Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) , a CSS/PROFILE , and an Electronic Noncustodial Parent’s Statemen t. (if applicable). In addition, you’ll need to provide copies of official 2015 federal income tax returns (including W-2 forms and schedules) for your parents or non-custodial guardians and yourself separately as needed. Finally, if your family happens to own interest in a farm, consult this page—there are two additional forms you’ll have to provide the College’s Financial Aid office. BC is one of a few colleges that pledge to meet 100% of demonstrated need, so if you think that you might be eligible for need-based aid according to the school’s policies (outlined here ), you should certainly plan to submit these forms.

If you plan to apply for need-based aid, be sure to submit your forms by the appropriate deadlines. Early Decision applicants must complete the FAFSA by February 1, 2017, submit their need-based aid requests by November 16, 2016, and submit the Noncustodial Parent’s statement by January 1. If offered admission, these students can expect to hear back from the financial aid office by late January. Regular Decision applicants need to submit all forms by February 1; if awarded admission, these students will hear back from BC’s Financial Aid office with an offer by late March.

Applying to Boston College

BC accepts the Common Application, so the application process is fairly simple in this regard. Simply add BC to your Colleges tab, and proceed as you would regularly with the Common App. There are a few extra pieces of information to note here, though. For one, as we mentioned above, BC splits its undergraduate education system into 4 separate schools. When you complete the supplement, you must select which of these schools to which you are applying and, if you are accepted, you are required to spend your entire freshman year studying in that school before deciding to transfer to another one. If, after your first full year at BC, you find yourself wanting to transfer, you can do so by contacting the Dean of the school at which you seek enrollment. That said, admission would not be guaranteed, as each school has limited enrollment and cannot always accommodate internal transfer students.

Regardless of which school to which you choose to apply, BC does require its students to submit a supplemental essay in addition to their personal statement. The prompt for the supplement is as follows:

We would like to get a better sense of you. Please select one of the questions below and write an essay of 400 words or less providing your response.

1. Human beings have a creative side that tends to shine most when we are truly invested in the world around us. Describe a situation when you responded effectively to a particular need and found yourself at your creative best.

2. Experience teaches us the importance of being reflective when making major decisions. Share an example from a recent event when a leader or an average person faced a difficult choice. What were the consequences of the decision? Would you have done the same?

3. BC strives to provide an undergraduate learning experience emphasizing the liberal arts, quality teaching, personal formation, and engagement of critical issues. If you had the opportunity to create your own college course, what enduring question or contemporary problem would you address and why?

4. Jesuit education stresses the importance of the liberal arts and sciences, character formation, commitment to the common good, and living a meaningful life. How do you think your personal goals and academic interests will help you grow both intellectually and personally during college?

For an in-depth analysis on how to respond to these questions, follow this link to our dedicated guide to writing supplemental essays for BC.

Test Scores

BC requires its prospective students to submit test scores as part of their application. You may submit scores from either the re-designed or previous versions of the SAT or the ACT. If you choose to submit the newer version of the SAT, you will not be required to submit the essay portion. Similarly, you will not be required to submit the written portion of the ACT. While you are still allowed to superscore your test grades, you may not combine scores from the old SAT with scores from the re-designed SAT. According to the school’s website, the middle 50% of students score between 1910 and 2150 on the SAT.

BC does not require scores from the SAT II (SAT Subject Test), so you may choose whether or not to submit them.

If you are applying as an international student and your primary language is not English, you will also be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS, even if you attend an English-speaking secondary school.

Interviewing and Visiting: Do They Matter?

BC does not offer interviews as part of its admissions process, and while its adcom encourages students to visit the school, you should only do so to better educate yourself on its vibe, mission, and grounds—in other words, to see firsthand if it is a good fit for you. If it is possible for you economically and logistically, you should certainly consider visiting. If not, you shouldn’t worry, as whether or not you choose to visit BC’s campus will not affect your admission decision.

Odds and Ends: Things to Note When Applying

BC requires a few additional documents aside from your Common Application.

First, you should be sure that your guidance counselor or another school official submits your official transcript along with a recommendation form. Likewise, you should confirm that your college counselor will submit to BC a mid-year report with updated senior-year grades when it is available.

Second, you must submit two teacher evaluations with your application. BC encourages you to submit recommendations from teachers who have taught you in one of the five core academic subjects—English, social studies, science, math, or a foreign language—and we at CollegeVine recommend that you choose someone who has taught you at some point in the latter half of high school.

Third, if you choose to pursue a major in studio art, performing art, or some other major related to your artistic interests, you should submit an appropriate art, music, or theater supplement to BC through the Slide Room function of the Common App. Early Action students should be sure to submit this supplemental information by November 1; Regular Decision candidates should submit their art supplement by January 1.

A final note on applying: If you and your family cannot afford to cover the $75 application fee, you may apply for a fee waiver through the Common App.

Date Central

BC offers two different application cycles in which its students may apply: Early Decision and Regular Decision. The relevant deadlines for each cycle are below.

Early Decision

Application Due: November 1

Application Decisions Released: Applicants will be notified by December 24.

Regular Decision

Application Due: January 1

Application Decisions Released: Applicants will be notified by April 1. You will be either accepted, offered a spot on the wait list, or denied admission.

Applications for futureBOS — Boston's Youth Jobs Program — Now Open

The City announced futureBOS, a new streamlined hub for youth to access and navigate all jobs available, and new partnerships with banking institutions to ensure young people can access their earnings.

Mayor Michelle Wu and the Office of Youth Employment and Opportunity (YEO) today launched futureBOS, the 2024 Summer Youth Employment Program, including all Successlink job opportunities, for Boston youth and young adults ages 14 - 24. Young people interested can find summer job opportunities through futureBOS , the newly redesigned webpage hub for all youth employment opportunities throughout the City. futureBos will guide young people to better navigate the application, onboarding, and hiring processes, ensuring that these employment opportunities  are centralized. To complement SuccessLink, futureBOS site will serve as a hub for all youth employment opportunities throughout the City, making resources easier to locate for young people and their families. Jobs young people can find on futureBOS including with nonprofits, local government, businesses and the healthcare industry.

“The future of Boston rests on connecting our young people to opportunities today so they can grow and lead our communities,” said Mayor Michelle Wu . “We’re taking our nation-leading youth summer jobs program to the next level with more employers, more opportunities, and a guarantee for every BPS student to access a paid summer job.”

“As an organization, supporting the Youth of Boston through employment opportunities has always been our top priority. Through futureBOS, we plan to make employment even more accessible, helping Boston youth access available work opportunities & resources and kickstart their professional and personal development,” said Allison Vernerey, Executive Director of the Office of Youth Employment and Opportunity . “Investing in youth jobs will always be a worthwhile endeavor. We are excited to continue our collaboration with employment partners, and the Mayor to bring even more opportunities to Boston’s youth community.”

Led by the Office of Youth Employment and Opportunity, futureBOS (which includes opportunities from the SuccessLink program) is designed to not only recruit and hire youth, but also ensure that the employment experience is engaging and meaningful, and advances young people’s professional and personal development. According to research from Northeastern University, the program positively impacts a range of economic, academic, and criminal justice outcomes for youth. Recognizing the importance of this work, the City invested $18.7 million in youth summer jobs last year to expand and improve the program. As a result, nearly 10,000 young people were successfully employed in summer 2023. Building on this milestone, Mayor Wu is increasing Boston’s commitment to young people through the Mayor’s Youth Job Guarantee (MYJG), a pledge that any eligible BPS student who wants a summer job can get one.

“I am so proud to join Mayor Wu as the City of Boston launches futureBOS,” said Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper . “We know that our young people who work a summer job or internship build their professional skills, have fun, meet other young people and new mentors, and are paid for their work. Last summer, more than 9,000 young people found jobs and internships through the City of Boston’s summer youth job program and I am excited that our young people will have access to this innovative new opportunity.”

Recognizing the importance of coordination and alignment across Boston’s youth employment providers, YEO partners with over 200 City agencies, non-profits, higher education institutions, and lead entities – Action for Boston Community Development, the Boston Private Industry Council, Artists For Humanity , and the John Hancock MLK Scholars – to offer high-quality employment opportunities to youth. To ensure that disadvantaged youth have equitable access to jobs, the City is supporting organizations that prioritize proven at-risk youth populations in partnership with the State's Commonwealth Corporation YouthWorks . YEO will also partner with the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA) to provide immigrant youth with hands-on leadership and skills training, regardless of immigration status.

To increase private sector employment among young people, the City has created the futureBOS pledge , an invitation to companies and small businesses to commit to employing youth from Boston. Businesses interested in hosting internships for BPS youth will receive direct support from the Boston Private Industry Council, the City’s Workforce Development Board after completing the pledge. Deepening these partnerships brings the City closer to creating a more holistic and inclusive workforce development ecosystem for Boston’s youth.

"At Artists For Humanity, we couldn't be more proud to continue to be a part of summer youth employment in partnership with the City of Boston and the Office of Youth Employment and Opportunity," said Anna Yu, Executive Director of Artist For Humanity . “For generations we have seen summer employment transform teen lives by inspiring creative avenues for post-secondary learning and career pathways. We are excited to play a part in fulfilling Mayor Wu's promise to give every teen a safe and productive place to work, learn and grow."

"Youth employment and work-based learning help students succeed both academically and developmentally. The summer months offer students an opportunity to learn what it takes to earn a paycheck and to imagine themselves in various careers,” said Neil Sullivan, Executive Director of the Boston Private Industry Council . “FutureBOS is making an extraordinary range of community-based opportunities available to Boston youth.  Simultaneously, Boston’s private sector and institutional employers are stepping up to provide career-oriented internships. These employers benefit by meeting the workforce of the future, while diversifying their workplaces in real time."

“We are pleased to once again partner with Mayor Michelle Wu and the City of Boston for our Summer Youth Jobs program,” said ABCD President and CEO Sharon Scott-Chandler . “ABCD SummerWorks and the City’s mutual commitment to the employment, development, and empowerment for young people throughout Boston is undeniable and longstanding. We hope to reach as many youth as possible this summer – continuing some on their path to long term employment, success, and starting others on their journey.”

Beyond employment opportunities, YEO provides youth with career development, skills building, and financial education training. This year, three local banks – Citizens Bank, M&T Bank, and Metro Credit Union – have stepped up to provide special non-custodial, no-fee options that will make it easier for our youth to open safe, non-predatory bank accounts, facilitating access to their summer earnings and instilling good financial habits that will last a lifetime.

“At Metro, we are committed to giving people in our communities the knowledge and skills needed to feel confident with their money,” said Charlene Bauer, Senior Vice President at Metro Credit Union . “We are excited to be one of several partners working with YEO in providing a solid foundation of financial wellbeing for these students as they journey into adulthood.”

Youth are strongly encouraged to attend the Youth Job and Resource Fair at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday, March 23rd, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. to connect with over 100 summer employers, access career development resources, receive job application assistance, open bank accounts, and win prizes.
