Columbia College

International admissions.

Columbia College welcomes all international students to apply for admission. There is no separate or different application for international students. As a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified school, the College’s Designated School Officials (DSOs) can issue the Form I-20 Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status to assist eligible students in applying for the F visa. If you are an international student who is not sure whether you should seek a non-immigrant student (F-1) visa, please contact Melissia Brannen at [email protected] .

Application Deadline

In order to process all necessary documentation, including a student Visa, international applicants must apply and submit all of their documents by the following date:

  • July 1 for Fall Enrollment
  • November 1 for Spring Enrollment

Please contact us at 803.786.3766  with any questions about the enrollment timeline.

How do I apply as an international student?

Third-Party Application Services Statement Columbia College encourages interested applicants to apply using the Common App. The use of third-party agencies that charge you to assist with the application process is not supported by the College. If you require assistance in determining your status or need assistance with translation of your academic credentials, please contact  Dr. Melissia Brannen , Diversity Officer and Principal Designated School Official (PDSO).

1. Complete Your Application

We encourage all international students to use the common application . Creating an account is simple and straightforward. An application essay is required as part of the process but you can always take a break and come back later.

A photocopy of your passport or a current visa should be uploaded with your application or emailed to your admissions counselor to ensure proper spelling and order of your name. This information is to minimize errors for name mismatches on your I-20.

2. Request Your Official Transcript

Request an official copy of your transcript. Official transcripts should be sent directly from each school you've attended. Please note that we can only accept English-translated transcripts, records, and certifications.

Columbia College requires you to utilize World Education Services (WES) , a third-party credential evaluation service to complete a comprehensive report of your previous academic record. For a first-time, first-year student, fees for document evaluation range from U.S. $100-$145. For students who have completed some college-level courses or wish to transfer in from a non-U.S. institution, document evaluation fees range from U.S. $160-$205.

3. Share Your TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo

You must submit scores from either the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo. When submitting TOEFL scores, Columbia College’s institutional ID number is 5117.

English Proficiency Test Score Requirements:

Columbia College accepts all versions of TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo tests.

Minimum Scores:

  • TOEFL : Web-based – 79, Computer (testing center) – 213, or Paper (testing center) – 550
  • IELTS:  6.5
  • Duolingo:  105

4. Certification of Finances

In order for us to issue an I-20 for study in the United States, we are required to verify that your family can afford the cost of education. Please complete all of the fields in the Certification of Finances form , and indicate the maximum resources available to you for study in the US.

Financial Aid

Scholarships & grants, state department opportunities, what kind of visa do i need.

Once you have received your I-20 from Columbia College, you will need to apply for your F-1 visa for entry into and study in the US. We encourage you to visit U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or U.S. Homeland Security for steps, advice, and appropriate forms.

If you are a permanent resident, you are required to submit a copy of your permanent resident card. F-2 visas (F-1 dependents) are only allowed to take classes part-time and cannot obtain a degree.

We are only approved to accept non-immigrant students with F-1 visas (not J-1 or M-1 visas). To request a non-immigration student visa, follow these steps:

Make sure the name and date of birth on your I-20 matches the information on your passport – if the I-20 information does not match your passport, please contact your designated school official so we can correct the information on your I-20.

Complete SEVIS form I-901 and pay the SEVIS fee – visit SEVIS to first watch the fee payment tutorial and then go to FMJFEE to complete the form and pay the fee.

After paying the I-901 fee and receiving a receipt of payment, you may apply for a visa at any American embassy or consulate before you make plans to leave for the United States.

Visit the Bureau of Consular Affairs for useful information on academic studies in the U.S. and the visa process

What happens next?

Estimated Expenses for the Academic Year

An itemized estimate of the cost of attending Columbia College for the 2023–2024 academic year of nine months is as follows:

There is an additional charge of $540 for new students who are required to attend Orientation.

Information on planning and managing educational expenses is contained at https://sfs.columbia.edu/

The following fees, prescribed by statute for each Fall or Spring term, are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the Trustees. The fees shown are those in effect during the 2023–2024 academic year.

University charges, such as tuition and fees, residence halls, and dining plans, are due and payable in full by the date announced before the beginning of each term. To check on an account balance, log in to  Student Services Online (SSOL)  or call 212-854-4400. A late payment penalty is assessed on payments received after the due date.

It is the policy of the University to withhold all University services, including registration, diplomas, and official transcripts, until all financial obligations have been met.

Postgraduate special students and degree candidates enrolled for a ninth term are billed according to the per-point system; the per-point cost is $2,184.

Student Health Insurance Premiums

To ensure students have access to high-quality healthcare while at Columbia,  University policy requires all full-time students and all international students  to have health insurance coverage that meets University requirements , in addition to the on-campus programs and services provided by Columbia Health. Columbia University offers the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan (Columbia Plan), administered and underwritten by Aetna Student Health.  Please visit the Columbia Health Insurance page for plan benefits and cost.

International students

Navigating the U.S. healthcare system can be complex. To help ensure that international students have access to the highest quality of care on- and off-campus, Columbia University requires all international students to enroll in the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan .  On a limited case-by-case basis, international students may qualify for a waiver.

Waivers and exceptions

Students who have an alternate insurance plan that meets established criteria set by the University may submit a request for a waiver. Visit the Columbia Health website for more information about waiver and exception criteria.

Waiver and exception requests are due at least two weeks before the enrollment deadline (September 30 for Fall enrollment; February 15 for new Spring enrollment; or June 15 for new Summer enrollment). All requests are considered, but approval is not guaranteed.  Students who do not submit a request for a waiver or exception in a timely manner will be charged the insurance premium on their term bill and are responsible for these charges.

Students must confirm their enrollment or submit a waiver request on the Columbia Health Patient Portal every year . Students will receive reminders through their Columbia email.

Please contact the Student Health Insurance Team with any questions. They can be reached via [email protected] , or by visiting the office on the 3rd Floor of John Jay Hall.

Withdrawal is defined as the dropping of one’s entire program in a given term as opposed to dropping a portion of one’s program (see  Academic Regulations ). Any student withdrawing from the College must notify the  Center for Student Advising  in writing;  notification to instructors or failure to attend classes does not constitute an official withdrawal from the College and will result in failing grades in all courses.

A student who withdraws is charged a withdrawal fee of $75. In addition, students will be charged a housing fee once they leave a university residence. All application fees, late fees, and other special fees are not refundable if the student withdraws after the first 30 days of classes, and any coverage remains in effect until the end of the term. Students who withdraw or are dismissed from the University and are on the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan will be terminated from the insurance plan and receive a pro-rated refund of any remaining premium as a credit to their student account. As with other University fees, the Columbia Health and Related Services Fee is non-refundable and not pro-rated.

Medical Leave

Students who are on an approved medical leave of absence are eligible to remain on the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan for a cumulative maximum of two semesters during the course of the student’s entire enrollment within a particular school at Columbia, regardless of the length of program.

Medical leaves must be approved by the student’s academic unit and reflected in the Student Information System. Upon written notification from the academic unit granting medical leave, the Student Health Insurance Office will contact the student via their Columbia email address to determine whether the student wishes to remain enrolled in the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan.

Students who do not reply within 14 days will be automatically terminated from the plan, effective at the end of the month in which the Student Health Insurance Office is notified or at the conclusion of the semester, whichever comes first.

Any adjustment to the tuition that the student has paid is determined by the date of withdrawal. Students receiving financial aid are not entitled to any portion of a refund until all Title IV financial aid programs are credited and all outstanding charges have been paid.

Each term, students are required to register for a full program of courses (minimum of 12 points), by the end of the  Change of Program period , i.e., by the end of the second week of classes. Students who are not registered for at least 12 points by the end of the Change of Program period will be withdrawn from Columbia College.

Fall and Spring Term Tuition Refund Schedule

For the purposes of tuition proration, a week is defined as beginning on Monday and ending on Sunday. Also note that the official Change of Program period normally ends on a Friday.

There is no difference in the proration schedule of a school or program charging per-point or flat rate tuition.

Columbia is committed to meeting the full demonstrated financial need for all admitted students. Financial aid is available for all four undergraduate years, provided that students continue to demonstrate financial need.

All applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States, who are students granted refugee visas by the United States, or who are undocumented students in the United States, are considered for admission in a need-blind manner.

International students who did not apply for financial aid in their first year are not eligible to apply for financial aid in any subsequent years. Foreign transfer candidates applying for aid must understand that such aid is awarded on an extremely limited basis. Columbia does not give any scholarships for academic, athletic, or artistic merit.

The following listing of named scholarship funds have been generously donated by alumni, parents, and friends of Columbia College and are the cornerstone of the College’s need-based and full need financial aid program. More than fifty percent of Columbia College students receive a Columbia Grant toward their demonstrated need and are eligible to receive named scholarship. The commitment of the Columbia College community enables the College to maintain an economically, ethnically, and racially diverse student body.

Information for Admitted International Students

Immigration information.

After being admitted to Columbia College, international students will need to go through additional immigration process in order to start your education journey.

Receive I-20 Certificate of Eligibility Form

The I-20 Certificate of Eligibility form will be sent to you by Columbia College after you have met eligibility requirements to be issued an I-20.

Once inside the U.S., this form is proof of your legal status.

To receive your I-20, provide the college an official original bank statement demonstrating your ability to pay the total   cost of attendance   for one academic year. Make sure financial statements are current or within six months of the start of the semester. If you have received a Columbia College scholarship, your total cost of attendance may be reduced by the awarded scholarship amount.

If you will not be funding your studies with personal funds, work with your financial sponsor to complete the   Affidavit of Support .

In addition to the bank statement, new freshmen should provide a copy of their passport and the   SEVIS Supplement form. Transfer students should provide a copy of their passport, visa, I-94, current I-20, SEVIS form and   Transfer Authorization.

Additional forms may be required. Your recruiters will communicate directly with you.

The next step is obtaining a visa.

Transferring Your I-20 to Columbia College

If you previously studied at a U.S. high school or other college and are transferring to Columbia College, report to International Student Services staff within 10 days of the beginning of your first semester. You will need to present a current I-20 issued from the previous institution, and evidence of full-time enrollment at the other school. This could be in the form of a transcript or letter from your former advisor.

The Transfer Authorization Form should be completed and mailed by students transferring to Columbia College from an institution in the U.S. Please check myPortal for a list of International Student Services Forms.

Maintain Legal F-1 Status

As an international student it is your responsibility to ensure you maintain your legal F-1 status. Maintaining status is necessary in order to receive the benefits of F-1 status such as employment and program extension, and can be crucial to a successful application for a change or adjustment of visa status in the future. Failure to maintain your non-immigrant status can result in serious problems with immigration and could lead to deportation from the U.S.

To maintain lawful F-1 student status you must:

  • Attend mandatory check-in   at Columbia College International Student Services.
  • Maintain a current passport.   Your passport should always be at least 6 months valid into the future.

  • Only three online credits   may be counted toward your full-time enrollment
  • Suspension, dismissal, expulsion, or any other similar action   which prevents enrollment may have effect on legal immigration status. See an advisor at the International Center.
  • Do not accept unauthorized employment , either on or off campus.
  • Be in good academic standing   and make progress toward an academic program.
  • Complete all required procedures   if transferring to another institution.
  • Notify International Student Services staff of any   changes to your academic program .
  • Notify International Student Services staff of any   changes in your local U.S. address   within 10 days of moving.
  • Maintain health insurance coverage .

As an international student, you may travel within the U.S. at any time. You may leave the U.S. at any time, but must have all necessary documents with you to re-enter. Please   check with the relevant embassy   to determine entry requirements for any country you are planning to visit during your travels.

Necessary documents for international travel and re-entry to the U.S. include:

  • A passport, valid for at least six months beyond date of re-entry.
  • A valid U.S. F-1 visa.
  • Current I-20 signed for travel. This includes a travel signature from an International Student Services staff member on the third page of your I-20. This travel signature should be no more than 6 months old when you travel.

Visa Renewal

The visa in your passport may expire while you are in the U.S., but it must be valid when you re-enter the United States. To renew your visa, you will need to submit the appropriate documents at a U.S. embassy/consulate. For additional information about your specific visa type, see the   Department of State website .

Ontario colleges to face biggest hit from foreign student cap

Doug ford government announces plan to divvy up shrinking international student permit numbers.

Only one Ontario university will see its international student intake shrink this year while more than half of the province's public colleges face a drop, under a plan announced Wednesday by Premier Doug Ford's government.

Ontario's plan comes two months after the federal immigration minister announced a national cap on study permits for international post-secondary students, amid complaints that an explosion in their numbers was driving up housing costs in cities across Canada.

Some 240,000 international students were issued permits to attend post-secondary programs in Ontario last year, and the federal cap will see that number drop by roughly half this year.

Ontario's priorities for its smaller allotment will be programs that train students for "in-demand jobs" in such fields as skilled trades, health, human resources, hospitality, child care and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), the Ford government said in a news release.

Colleges rather than universities will face the biggest drop in their international student numbers.

  • Thirteen of Ontario's 24 colleges will see their allocation of study permits decline from 2023 numbers, according to the news release.
  • Only one of Ontario's 23 universities will see a decline: Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie.

"This approach recognizes that Ontario's universities have been responsible in their recruitment and management of international recruitment," said Steve Orsini, president and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities, in a statement posted on the organization's website.

Jill Dunlop, Ontario's minister of colleges and universities, sits in the legislature on Nov. 28, 2023.

The announcement comes one day after the Ford government's 2024 budget revealed that Ontario's colleges will lose out on $3.1 billion in revenue over the next two years from the expected drop in international student enrolment.

Marketa Evans, president of Colleges Ontario, the organization representing the 24 public colleges, said the revenue losses will have a severe impact on the fall academic term.

College funding model 'broken'

"No organization can absorb such losses without significant cuts to operations," Evans said in a statement posted to the Colleges Ontario website on Wednesday.

"The business model for funding public college programs is severely broken," she said. "While recent stabilization measures from the province are welcome, the majority of the financial support continues to go to Ontario's universities."

  • CBC Investigates Canada's international student spike was blamed on private colleges. Here's what really happened

In 2019, the Ford government froze direct provincial funding to the post-secondary sector, cut tuition by 10 per cent, and explicitly encouraged colleges to recruit international students. Foreign students pay significantly higher tuition fees than Canadians.

Last month the government  announced  a $1.3 billion boost to post-secondary funding, spread over the next three years. It falls well short of the $2.5 billion increase  recommended  for the same timeframe by the government's own panel of experts in November, before the cap on international study permits was imposed.

University of Toronto campus

The government said the biggest declines in study permits this year will be seen at Conestoga College in Kitchener and at public colleges that contract private colleges to deliver programs tailored to international students, known as public college-private partnerships .

More than 30,000 international students were granted study permits in 2023 to attend Conestoga, more than any other post-secondary institution in Canada. Conestoga led the country in study permits for foreign students in four of the past five years, according to federal data.

  • Ontario deficit will triple as economy weakens, 2024 budget shows

"We have been working with post-secondary institutions to ensure international students are enrolled in the programs to support a pipeline of graduates for in-demand jobs," said Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop in the government's news release.

Dunlop said 96 per cent of Ontario's foreign student allocation this year will go to publicly funded colleges and universities, with the remainder to language schools, private universities and other institutions. Private career colleges will not get an allotment.

Private colleges were not the key drivers of Canada's explosion in international students, according to federal immigration data obtained and analyzed by CBC News in February.

Data reveals Ontario public colleges account for biggest share of international study permits

Just 10 Ontario public colleges accounted for nearly 30 per cent of all study permits issued across Canada since 2021, the data revealed .

In 2023, permits were issued to 175,000 international students to study at Ontario's public colleges, more than four times the number issued for the province's universities, according to the data.

  • Analysis What the cap on international students means for Doug Ford's government

The government said no school will be permitted to receive more student permits in 2024 than in 2023, and its permit numbers must not exceed 55 per cent of its first-year domestic enrolment.

Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller has said the cap is in response to a recent surge in international students and is meant to curb bad actors from taking advantage of high tuition fees while providing a poor education.

"Eager to review the details of this announcement in more depth, but this appears to be a very reasonable response by the Government of Ontario," Miller said on social media Wednesday.
