Ghanaians Share Why Blood Donation Is So Important

From World Blood Donor Day last June to the end of August, we called on citizens of the West African country of Ghana to share their best, most captivating stories of blood donation. Ghanaians were asked to submit essays on their personal experiences giving blood and, despite historic struggles with misinformation around blood collection and safety, residents from all over the country wrote in to highlight the critical importance of a stable blood supply.

Four essayists received nearly $1,000 USD in total, awards made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of GBF supporters.

We’ve included excerpts of the winning essays below, along with links to their full essays. We hope their words resonate with you as deeply as they did for us.

Adwoa’s Story : “What does blood mean to me? Leviticus 17:14 talks about how the life of every creature is in the blood. As a medical student who has come into contact with several patients in the course of my studies, I’ve come to understand the truth to this statement. Blood is life. Literally… Every time I donate blood, I get to be part of someone’s story and contribute to something bigger than my little world.”

Eyad’s Story : “Throughout his childhood, my younger brother frequently found himself confined to a sickbed. Every time he was admitted to the hospital, my mother would return home in tears, repeating the word ‘blood!! blood!!'”

Ilham’s Story : “Although I had never met Mariam, the thought that our lives would become intertwined through the simple act of blood donation touched me deeply. I’ve come to understand that blood donation is a gift that not only saves lives but also brings comfort to families, hope to patients and gratitude to those who witness its profound effects.”

Samuel’s Story : “When I asked, ‘Couldn’t the doctors give her some blood infusion to save her life?,’ the response was as you may guess. I lost my cousin because there was no blood available at the facility’s blood bank to save her life… That was when I decided to become a voluntary blood donor.”

Most importantly, on this day, the WHO organizes a campaign that invites people to donate blood. A person eligible to donate blood must fall in the age bracket of 17-66 years of age. They must weigh more than 50 kgs and have sound health. People suffering from diseases like diabetes, hypertension and more cannot donate blood.

Benefits of Blood Donation

As we all know by now, blood donation has a lot of benefits. Why a person requires blood has various reasons. It may be an illness or also an accident, nonetheless, it is important. The blood that we donate helps a person in need. It enhances their health condition and makes them overcome their critical situation.

In other words, blood donation does not simply help that specific person but also contributes to a responsible gesture towards society. Moreover, it also enhances the health of the donor. As the cell depletion allows a way for production, not new cells that freshen our body system.

Giving blood is all about giving the gift of life to others. The donation of blood for medicinal and scientific purposes is the goal of voluntary blood donation. One pint of blood, or one-tenth the amount an adult keeps in their body, is the maximum amount that a typical donor is permitted to donate at once. One pint is enough blood to save three lives. Blood donation is an essential component of medicine since roughly one in three people on the earth require blood transfusions at some point in their lives.

Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14 to create awareness of the universal need for blood for health care and to thank every individual who donates blood. Most notably, the WHO sponsors a campaign on this day to encourage people to give blood. A person must be between the age of 17 and 66 in order to be eligible to give blood. They must be in good health and weigh at least 50 kg. Diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and others prevent some people from giving blood.

My Uncle's Story

You do not have to be a fireman or a doctor to save a life, it is just as easy as donating blood. My uncle had once gotten into a bad accident, lost a lot of blood because of it, and urgently needed blood for his surgery. No one from my family was a match, so we all contacted our friends for help. After a few hours of struggling to find a donor, my brother's friend came to help. It was because of him that that day my uncle went into surgery timely and today is living a healthy and beautiful life. My whole family praised my brother’s friend and thanked him for his generosity.

The simplest acts have the capability of having the largest impact. Blood that is donated is used to treat patients with a variety of medical conditions such as blood disorders, cancer and anaemia or to help replace the blood lost from patients during surgery. Each donation is split into its components, these being red blood cells, platelets and plasma, meaning that each individual patient can be given the component that they require in order to help them to recover. This means that every donation is put to its best use and each donor has therefore given the most that they can through one donation.

Why Should You Donate Blood?

You should never hesitate to donate blood because it is primarily done to save lives. It represents humanity. It is blind to the blood donor's caste, creed, or religion. The organs of our body perform a variety of tasks, and in order to do so, these organs require oxygen and energy. The blood that flows in our body provides oxygen and energy. Therefore, blood from an outside source is needed when an organ fails to perform a certain function and hence blood donation is required to save lives.

People who donate blood to blood banks serve a very noble humanitarian cause irrespective of caste/ creed/ religion or gender. There are many advantages to donating blood.

The most important benefit is that you are saving someone’s life. The blood donated can be used three times because it is sectioned into various components. It revitalises the fragile health condition of a human being. The human body is capable of regenerating blood within a few hours after donation.

The risk of cancer such as the liver, lung, and colon can be reduced by constant blood donation. This is because the iron stored in the body is maintained at a healthy level.

Every donor has to go through a physical test to analyse whether they are eligible to donate blood. This health checkup helps in knowing your own body like pressure level, haemoglobin, iron and sugar level. It is also tested for HIV, hepatitis, and other diseases.

The most powerful health benefit is psychological. When you know that the blood that you are donating will be used somewhere to save someone’s life, it gives you a sense of immense pride.

There are blood banks where people can store their blood, and that blood is used in case of a medical emergency. It is advised that people with rare blood types deposit their blood in blood banks for future needs. The need for blood is always greater than the supply, hence more encouragement should be given to individuals so they would voluntarily donate blood and save lives.

Today, it is crucial to raise awareness of the benefits of blood donation and the need for people to appreciate life. Several NGOs are working towards spreading awareness on blood donation which might save anyone's life. Their primary goal is to encourage individuals to give blood and to let them know how important what they have done is.

The Experience of Organizing Blood Donation Camp through Student Initiative

Introduction:

A blood donation camp was organized in the institute which was a student initiative and a street play on blood donation awareness was carried out at different parts of the institute. For this reason, the study aimed at assessing the knowledge, attitude, and practises among the voluntary donors was carried out to bring out further awareness programs.

Materials and Methods:

The study is a Cross-sectional analysis to know about the knowledge, attitude, and practises among the donors as well as collect information regarding the rare blood groups. The idea to conduct a blood donation camp at a tertiary care hospital in Amritsar was initiated by the students of the 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th professional year and was implemented on February 8, 2018. On this day, two awareness street plays were carried out, first at the outpatient department area and then near the college entrance to spread the message about the benefits and necessity of blood donation. The activity of blood donation was executed by a group of 15 team members and the staff posted in the blood bank of the institute. Each donor was taken care of by looking after any postdonation weakness or nausea plus were also provided with refreshments. At the end, feedback forms were handed over and 50 such filled forms were collected.

Out of the 50 donors, there were 21 male (42%) and 29 females (58%), with a mean age of 21.45 ± 1.35 years. It was recognized that, among 50 donors, 52% of the donors have not donated in the last 2 years while 58% of the donors would voluntarily like to donate blood again. It was seen that 52% of the donors had fear of needles acting as a hindrance for the blood donation.

Conclusion:

My experience during the whole journey of the initiative was quite enlightening. Looking at the enthusiasm of the donors and the organizing team, it also encouraged the patients' relatives and professors to come forward for the donation. The success of the event has further encouraged me to carry out such more awareness projects in the future.

I NTRODUCTION

Blood can save millions of lives, and young people are the hope and future of a safe blood supply in the world.[ 1 ] Blood transfusion is crucial for health care systems, which contributes to rise in life expectancy and quality of life of people experiencing acute critical illness or chronic diseases.[ 1 ] Nowadays health care providers manage serious hemorrhagic complications after surgery, delivery or major accidents,[ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ] severe blood disorders,[ 6 ] and oncologic conditions[ 7 , 8 ] demanding blood transfusion. In these conditions, a huge volume of blood is required to meet a myriad of needs and numerous countries face the challenge of an increasing need of blood or its components. Health services should contribute adequate blood to meet needs. Procured blood from voluntary nonremunerated blood donors (VNRBD) is the most potent way to ensure safe and adequate blood supply.[ 1 ] Against an annual demand of 12 million units, in India, 9 million units were collected, of which 70% was from voluntary blood donors while the remaining 30% was from family or replacement donors. According to the protocol specified by the Government of India, 25% of all blood collected by a blood bank had to be kept aside as buffer stock to be used only in case of an emergency. However, out of India's 2433 blood banks, only 20% were able to maintain the buffer stock.[ 3 ] Blood scarcity is frequently encountered in health-care settings and is attributable to an imbalance between the increasing demand for safe blood and blood products on the one hand and failure to organize regular blood supply due to misconceptions, perceived harms and risks, and lack of motivation among potential donors. Medical college students can serve as a readily available pool of voluntary blood donors for the attached medical college hospitals and help tide away some of the scarcity of blood and blood products. However, different studies involving medical students have expressed concern on the low level of awareness and unsatisfactory voluntary blood donation practices among them. Some studies have also shown poor blood donation practice among the students despite relatively good knowledge and favorable attitude toward voluntary blood donation. To counter that, prosocial behavior which includes altruism and collectivism can be used as the main motivator,[ 9 ] while the other factors such as perceived need of blood,[ 9 , 10 ] self-esteem, and campaigns[ 9 , 10 , 11 ] can have an impact in blood donation. To mitigate the shortage of blood and blood products in the institute, we decided to organize a blood donation camp in our institute. We also decided to keep it to commemorate “The World Cancer Day” on 4 th of February and try to decipher the attitude, knowledge, and hurdle to blood donation among college-going adults.

M ATERIALS AND M ETHODS

Type of study.

The study is a cross-sectional analysis to know about the knowledge, attitude, and practises among the donors as well as collect information regarding the rare blood groups.

Prepatory activities

Pamphlets, posters, banners, and dissemination of messages by word of mouth were used for generating awareness about the event. A pretested, structured questionnaire was used as a study tool. Information about the blood donation camp via posters, banners, class presentations was spread around some other institutes of Amritsar like Government medical college, Khalsa College, Guru Nanak Dev University. We designed and practiced a street play educating people on blood donation general practices and mitigating barriers. The approval was sought from the institutional ethical committee. The questionnaire was semi-structured consisting of 20 questions (both closed and open ended).

The idea to conduct a blood donation camp at a tertiary care hospital in Amritsar was initiated by the students of 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th professional year and was implemented on February 8, 2018. The questionnaire was designed before the start of the study and was peer validated [ Table 1 ].

On the blood donation camp day, every donor's hemoglobin and blood group was checked. The criteria to donate blood was to at least have a hemoglobin of 13 gm% and 12 gm% for males and females, respectively. Out of these who full filled the criteria, the first 50 donors were taken in for the blood donation as decided by the faculty of the blood donation camp of our institute. Each donor was taken care of by looking after any postdonation weakness or nausea plus were also provided with refreshments. At the end, questionnaires were given to the donors in a separate room and 50 such filled forms were collected. Data were collected after obtaining informed consent. • Should donate blood more often
• Fear of weakness after the blood donation has been conquered
• False perception of time-consuming and tedious task cleared
• gave a great feeling.

D ISCUSSION

Targeting the beliefs associated with blood donation enhances the effectiveness of recruitment campaigns and the prevalence of blood donors annually. Prevalence (13.81%) of blood donors in this study was quite low similar to the study from Sikkim (12.7%).[ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ] Prevalence of female blood donors was also very less (9.65%) compared to male blood donors (19.53%). Low Voluntary Blood Donors (VBD) was an important indicator for us to modify and strengthen the recruitment and motivational strategies. Previous studies have shown that the path from attitude to intention was more strongly weighted in men than in women. Self-efficacy played a larger role in determining donation intention in females which can be a reason for high voluntary blood donation among men than in women.[ 12 ] Awareness on VBD was quite high (81.57%) which was similar to the KAP study of Thai students.[ 13 , 14 ] Awareness of the appropriate age for blood donation and the donor deferral criteria were very important factors. Lack of information on blood donation lowers the prevalence of voluntary blood donation.[ 15 , 16 ] Deferral of a donor is not only unpleasant for the donor, but it also leads to wastage of precious time and money of the transfusion center. Therefore, appropriate education of society regarding deferral factors of blood donation both temporary and permanent can lead to decrease in deferrals rate. Every individual should know their ABO and Rh D blood group so that they can donate blood whenever emergency requirement arises. Knowledge of ABO and Rh D blood groups is even more important in Jammu Region as it is prone to accidents and militancy-related incidents. Youngsters like college students must know their ABO and Rh D blood group so that they can donate blood easily whenever there is demand of their particular blood group. Especially, those with the rare blood groups should get their names enrolled as voluntary blood donors in rare blood group donor's records maintained by Regional Transfusion centers. About 61.18% of the students were aware of this fact that a healthy adult human being can donate blood after every 3 months. Knowledge of this fact can increase the frequency of repeat blood donations and can turn first-time blood donors into regular blood donors. Awareness of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was not satisfactory in Indian society and for that more intensive public awareness campaigns by the government with the help of nongovernmental organizations are required.[ 17 ] Although all the students in our study were aware of AIDS/HIV still, 37.5% believed that blood donation causes HIV/AIDS to the donor.[ 18 ] More than 50% of the students gave the correct answers for the questions pertaining to Blood Donation. Frequent blood loss through voluntary blood donations is associated with reduced risk of acute myocardial infarction in middle-aged men.[ 2 ] High-frequency blood donors had evidence of decreased iron stores, decreased oxidative stress, and enhanced vascular function when compared with low-frequency donors and thus, there is a potential link between blood donation and reduced cardiovascular risk.[ 19 ] Blood donation is also associated with decreased risk of Type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.[ 3 ] The time to return for the next donation was associated with the total number of donations made.[ 20 ] Sex, Age, and other donor Demographic factors influence the probability of subsequent donations.[ 21 ] It also depends on the time since the index (first) donation. Social pressures and rewards were the factors that influence the decision for repeat blood donations at the early stages while self-originating factors influence the decision for blood donation in later stages.[ 22 ] Since our study involved a younger age group (18–26 years), in which most of the students (1350 students were in the age group of 18–20 years) just got eligible for blood donation, therefore, the number of blood donors who had donated only once or twice were more. Social causes were the major motivational factors for blood donation. “Altruism, doing good to others,” “Sense of social responsibility” and “For helping friends or relatives” were the major reasons for blood donation. In a study from Norway, 2.8% of respondents donated blood to be tested for HIV.[ 23 ] Younger donors donate blood for blood donor's credit cards and items of limited value while elder people donate for medical check-ups and blood tests.[ 24 ] The motivations to donate are altruism, humanitarian, social pressure, replacement, and rewards.[ 25 ] Altruism dominated the reasons for donating blood followed by social influence and ego enhancement.[ 26 ] Among students major determinants to become a blood donor were self-efficacy (for gaining experience), attitude, personal moral norm (personal responsibility, social obligation) and subjective norm (to help friends and relatives).[ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]

In our study, the main reasons for not donating blood were Fear of needles, sight of blood, Fear of ill effects, objection from elder and never been asked for blood donation. The most common of them were fear of ill effects and never been asked for blood donation. Most of the students who were willing to donate, but they had not donated blood because of a lack of opportunity to do so. This finding showed that sufficient steps to involve students, to create opportunities for them to donate blood is something that needs to give due consideration. Among most first-time donors temporary deferral becomes the permanent excuse for not donating blood.[ 31 , 32 , 33 ]

Fear of contracting AIDS or other TTD's was also a major reason for not donating.[ 28 ] In our society parents have a wrong concept that blood donation causes weakness and hence they have a discouraging attitude toward the donation of blood by their children especially by girls. Experience of blood donation is an important factor for determining future blood donations, especially in first time Blood donors. Those blood donors who have a pleasant blood donation experience usually return for donating blood in future and turns into regular VNRBD while those who experience it unpleasant often do not return for repeat blood donation. In our study, 92.38% had pleasant experience of blood donation, while 7.61% felt it unpleasant. The percentage of nondonors who do not want to donate blood in future is more than the blood donors who do not want to donate blood in future.[ 34 , 35 ] Interactive awareness sessions on blood donation should be organized among students and opportunities for blood donation should be created, which can greatly enhance the movement for “voluntary nonremunerated blood donation,” to ensure good quality of blood and safe modern medical care.[ 36 , 37 ] All countries in SEAR are trying to phase out replacement systems and move towards 100% voluntary nonremunerated regular blood donation.[ 10 ] Lack of resources, lack of professional management, myths, and misconceptions arising from cultural and social differences forms a barrier to blood donation. As young people can be prospective regular blood donors, education in the fields of blood donation, need for safe blood and healthy lifestyles for young people are needed. Students are the most important target group and can easily be targeted in schools, colleges, and universities.

C ONCLUSION

Being knowledgeable and having positive attitude regarding voluntary blood donation does not transform into the actual practice of blood donation, but this study shows a positive correlation between knowledge and donation practice. Therefore, specific recruitment and motivational campaigns are needed targeting the younger adults. Our efforts should be toward bringing the knowledge, awareness, and the positive attitude of the people in Amritsar into the application by motivating them and creating opportunities for them to become regular voluntary blood donor.

Blood donation is a very simple and healthy procedure. According to an old saying, the blood donation keeps your blood rotating and hence leads to a healthy and refreshing life after the procedures.

Hence, donating blood is a four stride function i.e. the donors’ registration, examination of medical background along with a partial physical health check (the check up of body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate etc), the blood donation, and finally refreshing juices.

At most, a blood donation time is observed around 15 minutes (i.e. the actual time of filling the empty white bottle with blood during donation). And on an average, one pint is transferred or donated from the total of pints in a human body (ARC, 2011).

The minister also emphasis and vision for launched blood campaign for an increment of blood donors from an average of 9 percent to 10 percent a year.

The UAE also takes the prides of holding World’s Blood Donor day 3 years back in 2008 which is the first Arab country to held such internationally recognized day.

The world is developing and developing at a rapid pace towards more and more advancement in science and technology, to gain excess power over excessive land and control overseas, to have an arguable share in everything that can make an impact towards their national interest all around the globe. That includes every nation, every country and every part of this planet. Governments are thriving for enough in their national and domestic favors and interests.

The worlds’ worst wars have been fought in the past centuries. The planet sees the magnificent use of its natural resources, also when those blessed resources were made bane for the humanity and human life. That era was the era of doing everything and advancement just for the benefit of one’s own interest and favor, everything aside was out casted or ignored.

Today, Dubai is considered as a hub of world Trade, Tourism and Investment. Enriched and blessed, this land, with the wells of Oil, people of the UAE worked extremely hard to make this desert a healthy, living, and touring spot of the world. Hence, causing an alarm for an effort that can alone be lauded across the world is the cause of sustainable measure for good health and being of locals and populous.

Hence, in the light of above mentioned facts and text, the topic “Blood Donation” is the most valuable and enlighten among all those that relate to technological development or nuclear enrichment programs or all those that have nothing to do with serving and assisting humanity but making human life miserable through their certain functionalities.

For teams to perform efficiently and effectively in collaboration and assistance of each participating member, the following five are the most essential steps toward positive, fruitful and productive output via stepping upward in the stages of group development model.

Not only does it increase the performance of the department or organization or the cause for which they are working together, but it also results in productive output of the work which that group take over. The members increase their contacts in the inside and outside world of their firm.

Since, this model is also followed by multiple organizations working for the same cause, this can help the members to have quality understanding of mutual communication and delivery of words or point towards the ultimate objective of the group. It also increases the efficiency of the human resource at the organization or firm for any of their future deals or communication with entities inside or outside their business.

Therefore, the work for “Blood Donation” task is divided according to the following five stages and uniformly divided among the members of the group.

A very first meeting is held to discuss the procedure of how the group can proceed towards the completion of the task regarding “Blood Donation”. Since, the formation of random groups in the classroom requires initial time for members to have effective and clear communication between them, hence, the different aspects of contacting a blood bank, procedure to run the awareness campus and others are vaguely discussed.

The ideas are blurrily discussed with the group members in the group formation stage. Now, the members are busy discussing and brain storming the following undertakings that would eventually help in the report making.

• Analysis of regular blood donation
• To contact a particular Company so that an awareness program can be launched within its premises.
• Material required for the Blood Donation awareness campaign
• Activity day i.e. exposing employees to this charitable act of blood donation

After the brain storming activity in the storming stage, the group is all set to clear out the procedure for the campaign to begin. Hence, the duties are uniformly divided amongst the members.

• One member is going to contact a nearby blood bank
• One is going to contact a company XY to have their idea implemented and;
• Third member is going to collect information about the publishing and printing of material required for the campaign.

As all the directions are set for the task to be initiated, members have got the chance to perform the awareness activity within the XY Company they contacted in the earlier stage. The members also remain successful in publishing and printing the material for the activity to take place. The material that is printed for the campaign includes flayers, hand outs, pamphlets and t-shirts.

In the last stage for the preparation of their report for the Blood Donation task, members have successfully visited and ran a fascinated awareness campaign on blood inside the XY Company building. The employees are happy to be a part of this charitable awareness program inside their offices.

The employees are participating with all their interest and responding to our queries at ease. Members have distributed the flayers and handouts with the workforce. A pamphlet regarding the activity, to take place in the building, has been posted on the main notice board at the welcome entrance of the building. A small presentation on this charitable activity is also being given to the employees and staff of the XY Company all through the day.

Blood is that constitute of the human body that supports and live the refreshingly bio system of the living body. Hence, it is viable and has monopoly in its production and wide spread use. By monopoly or wide spread use means that the only source for getting blood is human for supporting and healing a human.

It is found to be a noble cause for the serving of humanity all around the globe. Though technology and digital world have produced an ease for human lives, but they are unable to produce Blood, a natural mineral, up to such advancement in the technology.

Governments, nongovernmental organizations and institutions around the world are constantly thriving to increase the blood donation each year to cure and heal thousands of patients waiting for this constituent of human body to cure them. WHO has been encouraging those stakeholders to motivate their populous to show generosity towards this universal goal that would ultimately be in favor for a sustainable and health environment and world for us, for people around us and for generations that are to come.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been the most active member in this regard. After internationally accreditation of the Sharjah Blood Transfusion Centre, the Health Minister H.E. Dr. Hanif Hassan Ali Al Qassim originated a nationwide blood donation campaign in the UAE in the last quarter of 2010 with a mission to increase the blood donation from 9 percent per year to 10 percent per year.

Hence, envisioning and revitalizing the self stipulating in Blood Supply and Donation not only inside their territory (UAE) but across the globe for the common humanity serving.

Hence, beside the soaring economy, developing infrastructure, high pumping of billions of dollars in its territory for a complete modern, developed and self sufficient city and centre of the world, the government in the UAE i.e. the Ministry of Health is taking its best efforts towards the “Blood Donation” topic discussed above with various quotes and references from online newspapers and ministry of health UAE website.

Biden and Corporate America? It’s ‘Complicated.’

The president has courted executives with long listening sessions and sustained outreach, but frustrated many with his tax plans and regulations.

In the days before delivering his State of the Union speech last month, President Biden called the chief executives of General Motors and Cisco Systems to ask their advice on the state of the American economy and share how he planned to talk about it.

Then he rode to Capitol Hill and, in his address, promised to raise the rate on a new minimum tax his administration has levied on big companies “so every big corporation finally begins to pay their fair share.”

“I also want to end tax breaks for Big Pharma, Big Oil, private jets, massive executive pay,” Mr. Biden continued, adding: “End it now.”

The sequence epitomizes Mr. Biden’s alternatively cozy and combative relationship with America’s business leaders, which has rippled through the national economy, federal policy and now the 2024 campaign for the White House.

The president has both courted and pilloried corporate America as he seeks re-election this fall. Corporate leaders have enjoyed record profits on his watch and an open channel with his administration, but they have bristled at some of his biggest policy decisions.

There is a certain symbiosis with corporate leaders in much of Mr. Biden’s economic agenda. His industrial policy initiatives depend heavily on corporate tax incentives , which he champions at ribbon-cuttings nationwide: The climate and advanced-manufacturing laws that Mr. Biden signed in 2022 feature large tax cuts for corporations that invest in the production of semiconductors, solar panels and other strategic goods. Republicans have derisively called those incentives “corporate welfare.”

Mr. Biden frequently seeks executives’ counsel on a wide variety of economic issues, including supply chain snarls, infrastructure investments and worker training. He impressed Calvin Butler, the chief executive of the utility giant Exelon, in a two-hour meeting in the Oval Office with executives last fall.

“He was engaged in it, and I can tell you this,” Mr. Butler said in an interview. “At about the hour mark, they kept tapping on him to say, ‘Hey, you know, we got other things to do.’ But he wanted to keep it going. He wanted to keep talking.”

As he seeks re-election, though, Mr. Biden has leaned heavily into populist attacks on the executives and companies he has engaged. He loves to talk about raising corporate taxes. He has also taken to blaming big companies , sometimes by name, for raising prices on some consumer staples. He blasts others for shrinking portions of snack foods, like candy bars, without cutting their prices.

Mr. Biden has also brought to office an economic philosophy that relies heavily on federal government intervention in private markets. That includes investments in infrastructure and industries, which business leaders generally support.

But it also includes environmental, financial and other regulations meant to reduce risks in the marketplace. Businesses oppose those efforts, along with the administration’s aggressive antitrust enforcement and other initiatives meant to stimulate competition.

As a result, Mr. Biden’s relationship with corporate America “is a complicated one,” said Neil Bradley, the executive vice president and chief policy officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a large business lobbying group in Washington.

Mr. Biden and his economic team have been open and thorough in their outreach to business groups, Mr. Bradley said, but frustrating in their policy choices. Chamber officials calculate that federal agencies under Mr. Biden have issued about twice as many regulations considered “economically significant” — currently defined as carrying at least a $200 million annual effect on the economy — as they did under President Donald J. Trump.

It is a contrast with Mr. Trump, whose administration employed less consistent outreach and careened chaotically from crisis to crisis, business leaders say. Mr. Bradley said executives were torn on which combination they preferred.

“You can look at a Trump administration with a lot more uncertainty, but directionally, the regulatory effort was moving to lighten the regulatory costs,” he said. “Here in the Biden administration, we have a pretty good idea where they’re going to go — it’s just how crushing is it going to be in terms of the regulatory level? And so, interestingly, there’s a lot of people saying, ‘The chaos is better.’”

Mr. Biden speaks regularly with leaders from large corporations and small businesses, and he has visited dozens of companies while in office. Executives who have spoken with the president and his aides say they listen earnestly to companies’ concerns, even when Mr. Biden and his team make clear that they disagree on the policy matter at hand.

Mr. Butler of Exelon said he had urged Mr. Biden at the White House to move faster to clear permitting issues and other hurdles to the building out of new-energy infrastructure. Mark Cuban, the famed investor and a founder of Cost Plus Drugs, said in an email that his conversations with Mr. Biden largely focused on health care, including what he called the “great job” that the president had done in getting Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices.

Brad Smith, the vice chairman and president of Microsoft, said in an interview that he had talked with Mr. Biden about carrying out his infrastructure bill and the CHIPS and Science Act, along with regulation of artificial intelligence. He praised Mr. Biden’s efforts to strengthen cybersecurity, saying he has “done more in his presidency than any president ever” on that issue.

Mr. Biden’s staff, Mr. Smith added, “has a breadth of expertise that is being applied at a deep level.” Under Mr. Trump, “the staff was leaner,” he said. “There weren’t as many in a lot of key jobs.”

Other executives have criticized Mr. Biden’s policies, all or in part. Oil and gas executives have denounced an administration pause on the permitting of new natural gas export terminals. Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, called Mr. Biden’s climate law and other green energy initiatives “inflationary” in an interview with CNBC this year.

Ken Griffin, the founder of the financial firm Citadel and a major Republican donor, swiped at Mr. Biden’s economic pitch in a Bloomberg interview in November . “Whoever told him to run on Bidenomics has no idea how to read an economics textbook,” Mr. Griffin said.

The Biden outreach to executives is similar to the approach employed by President Barack Obama and his team, according to business leaders and administration officials who also served under Mr. Obama.

But Mr. Biden differs from Mr. Obama — and Mr. Trump — in several respects. Executives who have spoken with him say the president makes clear in conversations that he is a “labor guy,” who measures economic success in part by the creation of well-paying union jobs. He has embraced robust federal scrutiny of mergers and other antitrust issues to a degree that even Mr. Obama did not.

He also has deeper policy entanglements with corporate behavior. Mr. Biden’s climate agenda blends corporate tax sweeteners for domestic production with a strict wave of regulations meant to quickly reduce fossil-fuel emissions. In some cases , agencies under Mr. Biden have softened some regulatory proposals in their final form — explicitly, administration officials say, to address corporate concerns.

Lael Brainard, who leads the White House National Economic Council, said in an interview that the president’s targeted corporate tax breaks were a departure from a Republican philosophy that pushed “across-the-board tax breaks for businesses, regardless of whether they were making investments that are good for America, generate jobs, help with a clean energy transition.”

Democratic pollsters are encouraging Mr. Biden to amplify that message in his re-election campaign. They want him to emphasize his plans to raise taxes for big companies while calling out firms for raising prices to pad profits and saddling customers with “junk fees” for things like concert tickets. Their data suggest that corporate taxation is a key vulnerability this fall for Mr. Trump, who cut corporate tax rates while in office and is set to face Mr. Biden in a 2020 rematch.

Voters “want to feel the president is on their side against people they think are squeezing them,” said Evan Roth Smith, the lead pollster at the Democratic group Blueprint. “Voters have no sympathy for big companies right now,” he added.

Mr. Bradley of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said many executives bristled at that language, and in particular at Mr. Biden’s practice of calling out companies by name for raising prices or shrinking portions. But some executives dismiss or downplay Mr. Biden’s tax proposals — and repeated calls for companies to pay their “fair share” — as campaign bluster.

“Recognizing how D.C. works, and that we’re in a political season, I tend not to get too high or too low on any of that,” Mr. Butler said.

Mr. Smith of Microsoft said it was an area of disagreement in an otherwise positive relationship with the president.

“We’re not going to be the first company to sign up for tax increases,” he said. But, he added later, “I think our tax rate is high enough that our initial reaction is, typically, that he’s talking about someone else.”
