Sikkim is a unique blend of different religious customs and traditions of different communities. The people of Sikkim are warned, simple and friendly with a natural gaiety. Sikkim is a beautiful land of manifold tribes and races of people living together

All these diverse tribes and communities have their unique features in addition to their particular dance forms, festival, language, culture and crafts form. The miscellany of ethnic groups, religion, and language is seen all over the Sikkim.

The culture of any place is often depicted through its cuisine, people, religion, language, art, music and dance, similarly, Sikkim also shines like Kohinoor, in the world for its culture, the second smallest state Sikkim is located in the northeastern part of India, the people of Sikkim are more commonly known as the Sikkimese. The prehistoric times of the state of Sikkim were occupied by their tribes namely Naong, Chang and the mon.

The people of Sikkim have a rich cultural heritage with a homogeneous blend of different religions, customs and traditions of different communities of people living. Apart from the traditional Sikkimese language and the tribal language like Hindi and English. Small festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. there are social or religious gatherings or celebrations that cannot miss out on the music and dance of the people of Sikkim.

The mask dance is very famous here and is performed by the monks in the temple during a religious festival. Sikkim people lived in a small bamboo hut.

Customs and traditions:

The people of Sikkim who follow the Mahayana form of Buddhism celebrate the festival Saga Dawa which is supposed to be very auspicious, on this particular day the people go to the monasteries and worship offering butter lamps.

They also celebrate Phand Lhabsol Festival with great pomp. Every 28th and 29th day of the Tibetan calendar they performed Kagyar Dance. The people of Sikkim especially the Hindu-Nepal of September-October which is the festival of the victory of good over evil.

Sikkim is renowned for its dazzling and appealing beauty. Sikkimese particles of weaving in the world, the oldest form of carpet weaving in the world, they also make woollen blankets, bags, shawls and other Handicraft Choktse is a kind of foldable table and has become a special product of Sikkim. 

The government has set up an institute of Sikkim. The government has set up an institute of cottage Industries in Sikkim.  At least we can say Sikkim is a true art state of India. It is a bright and tempting beauty, the char of this state is so beautiful.

General introduction of Sikkim:

Sikkim is a hilly state located in northeastern India. It is the second least populated state in India. English, Gorkha Khas language, Lepcha, Bhutia, Limbuband Hindi are the official languages of Sikkim. Hindu and Vajrayana Buddhism are the main religions of Sikkim. Gangtok is the capital and largest city of Sikkim. 

Kanchanjanga, the world's third-highest mountain range is also located in Sikkim. Sikkim is the 22nd state of India. Chief Minister of Sikkim is Mr Prem Singh Tamang.  The population of Sikkim is 610577. The area of Sikkim is 7096 km2.

History of Sikkim:

Sikkim came into existence in 1642, when Phuntsong Namgyal was declared the first Chogyal (king) of Sikkim. Namgyal was declared king by three Buddhist monks. 

The monarchy started in Sikkim in this manner. After which the Namgyal dynasty ruled Sikkim for 333 years. India attained independence in 1947.  After this, different princely states were merged in India under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. In this series, a referendum was also held in Sikkim in 1975. 

In the referendum, 97.5 per cent of the people were in favour of India. After which the Constitution Amendment Bill to make Sikkim the 22nd state of India was  introduced in the Lok Sabha on 23rd April 1975. It was passed the same day by a vote of 299-11. 

In the Rajya Sabha, the bill was passed on 26th April and on 15th May 1975, as soon as President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed signed the bill, the rule of the Namgyal dynasty came to an end. 

Geography of Sikkim:

Sikkim is a hill state located in the northeastern part of India. It is one of the small- est states in India. Sikkim is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and northeast, by Bhutan to the southeast, by the Indian state of West Bengal to the south, and by Nepal to the west. 

The capital is Gangtok, in the eastern part of the state. The third highest peak in the world, Kanchenjunga, which is considered to be the defence goddess of Sikkim, exudes its enchanting natural beauty. Sikkim is one of the 18 major regions of the world full of biodiversity. 

Culture of Sikkim:

•Major festivals 

Sikkim is mainly inhabited by Bhutia, Lepcha and Nepali communities. Maghi Sankranti, Durgapuja, Lakshmi puja and Chaitra Dasai / Rama Navami, Dasai, Sonam Losung, Samsung, Tendong Halo Rum Phat (worship of the Mount of Tendong), Losar (Tibetan New Year) are the majorire festivals of the state. Other festivals include Sakeva (Rai), Sonam Lochar (Gurung), Barahimzog (Magar) etc. 

• Costumes  

The costumes of Sikkim reflect the social and cultural lifestyles of the major communities that are Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali. The three communities of Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepal wear different costumes which further enhance the diversity found in the state. Among the prominent costumes of Sikkim are Bakhu / Kho, Chuba and Gho. 

•   Folk dance 

The major dances of Sikkim are Chhu Phat dance, Sikmari, Singhai Cham or Snow Lion Dance, Yak Cham, Denjong Nenha, Tashi Yangku Dance, Khukhuri Dance, Chutki Dance, Maruni Dance etc.  Food Rice is a staple food, and fermented foods traditionally constitute a significant portion of the cuisine. Many restaurants in Sikkim serve various types of Nepalese cuisine, such as the Newa and Thakali cuisines. Ti- betan cuisine has also influenced Sikkim's cuisine. 

Source of livelihood:

In Sikkim, more than 64 percent population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Arable land in Sikkim is about 1,09,000 hectares, which is 15.36 percent of the total geographical area. Maize, rice, wheat, potato, large cardamom, ginger and orange are the major crops here.

Sikkim is the largest producer of large cardamom in  the country. Ginger, potatoes, oranges and non-seasonal vegetables are other cash crops. Though industrially Sikkim has been declared a backward state, many centuries ago there have been artisan based traditional Sikkim cottage industries. 

Transportation:

• Roads Gangtok 

The capital of Sikkim is connected to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri and all the district headquarters of Sikkim by road. 41 km The total length of roads in the state, including National Highways, is 2,933.49 km. Out of this, 873.40 km Roads have been built by Border Roads Organization. 

•  Railways and Aviation 

The nearest railway stations of the state are Siliguri (113 km) and New Jalpaiguri (125 km) from where one can travel to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Lucknow and other important cities of the country. There is no airport in Sikkim. Helicopter service is provided between Gangtok and Bagdogra. 

Famous tourist place of Sikkim

Sikkim is one of the major tourist destinations in India with peaks, sacred lakes, ancient monasteries, orchid nurseries and stunning trekking routes making Sikkim a perfect holiday place. The major sightseeing places of Sikkim are Gangtok, Mangan, Yumthang Valley, Lachen Village, Gurudongmar Lake etc. 

Best time to visit:

The best time to visit Sikkim state is in the months of April and May. The Sikkim state receives four months of snow in the winter and is prone to landslides during the monsoons. Therefore, the summer season is considered to be very pleasant and suitable for visiting.

Sikkim state is one of the most beautiful states in the country. Sikkim captivates everyone with its natural beauty. The snow-capped mountains and naturally flowing waterfalls of Sikkim are very beautiful. A place with such beautiful scenery is definitely worth visiting.

The culture of any place is described through its people, cuisine, language, religion, art, music, and dance.

It mainly includes Gundruk, noodles and Sinki soups, tomato pickles, thukpas, fermented soybean, traditional cottage cheese, bamboo shoot, and many other fermented dishes that owe to its very cold climate. The staple food of this state is rice. People of this state also like momos and wantons.

Talking about the non-vegetarian food of this state, it is pork, beef, and fish. Boiled and steamed food items are mainly found here with fewer amounts of masalas. Food items are infused with local spices and herbs. People of this state mainly like to have some drinks while having food such as whiskey, local beer, and rum.

In Sikkim, people grow a wide range of crops like finger millet, barley, buckwheat, wheat, potato, soybeans, and many others. Fermentation is the most important process used here because people preserve different kinds of non-seasonal vegetables to be used in other seasons.
