These are all fun, and memorable moments, which children will remember for a long time. So, while writing an essay on this topic, they will indeed have a lot of ideas. With a little bit of help in putting together these ideas, you can guide your child to compose a good essay. Here are tips on how to write an essay on ‘My Birthday’ for students of classes 1, 2 and 3:

  • When writing essays about birthday parties in a few lines, stick to simple facts about your birthday and celebrations.

  • My birthday is on January 20. I celebrate it every year with my friends and family.

When writing a short essay on ‘My Birthday’, it is essential to have your points well thought out. Decide on how to start and touch upon things with minimal detail. Here is how to write this short essay in about 150 words:

My birthday is the most special day in my life. I love my birthday since my parents give me gifts on that day. I cut a cake and have a party with all my friends. This year I got a bicycle for my birthday, and it is the best gift I have received so far! My birthday celebration starts bright and early in the day. I wake up early get ready for school in special clothes for my birthday. We are allowed to skip uniforms on this day.

The birthday celebration in school is fun. My classmates sing ‘happy birthday’ for me in the morning, and I get to distribute chocolates to everyone. I always carry a few more chocolates and give all my best friends one extra.

The real party starts at home in the evening, and all my closest friends are invited. My family and neighbours also join in the celebration, and we all have a great evening.

Long-form essays are a bit tricky to write for all kids. They need to have a mental picture of the details they need to include and weave a good narrative. Here is a sample of a long essay on ‘My Birthday’:

My birthday is the most awaited event of the year for me. It is the day when I am treated extra special and get a free pass for everything! I always have my birthdays planned out. If it is a school day, I have to attend as usual but after school, I have a party planned in the evening with friends and neighbours. If it is a day off from school, my parents usually take me out during the day. We go to my favourite place and have fun. Then, we go back home and have more fun at the party in the evening.

My parents always plan for my birthdays beforehand, so that everything goes smoothly. On my birthday, I get to decide what clothes to wear, select the cake, plan party games and decide other such details almost a week before my birthday so everything is ready just in time. My parents always get me the cake of my choice, and it is a new design every year. This year it was the Avengers, my favourite superheroes. I always invite my friends from school and the neighbourhood to my birthday party so that we can enjoy ourselves together.

If my birthday falls on a school day, I wear special clothes to school for the day because we are allowed to skip our uniform that day. I carry two bags of chocolates to share with all my classmates. Birthdays are always fun because the teachers and classmates treat me extra special. I like distributing chocolates to everyone in my class, and always give one extra to all my friends.

At home, we have the party planned out for the evening. By the time I return from school, my mother decorates the house and has the place all set for the party. All my friends arrive in the evening, and we cut the cake soon after. My mother makes delicious snacks for all of us, which we lap up happily. We also play many games and have the most fun time. In the end, it is time to open the presents. I start unwrapping all my gifts as soon as everyone leaves. This is my favourite part of the entire day, as I always have to wait to see what I might receive in every new box!

The essay on ‘My Birthday’ teaches your child to write about their experiences and thoughts in simple English. Although children have ideas about what they want to write in the essay, they may not always be able to put it into words. With these samples, they will get some ideas about how to word their thoughts and write a good essay.

Some children may also want to write about their plans for their birthday coming up soon. They may have many ideas and thoughts about how they would like to celebrate their day. Writing this essay will help them think about how to plan a day and will encourage them to write from their imagination.

We all have our birthday party once every year on our birthday. On my birthday my father brings a big cake. We place candles on the cake. There is one candle for each year after my birth. When I am ten there will be ten candles on my cake. The cake is specially made for the occasion with ‘Happy Birthday’ written on it. When all my friends come and we are ready to have the cake, the candles on it are lit. We make secret wishes. Then the candles are blown out and the cake is cut to give the pieces.to all. All my friends say ‘happy birthday to you and eat the cake. Then we play games and enjoy the fun. Besides the cake, we have sandwiches, sweets, and fruits to eat. But the porridge my mother prepares on the occasion is what I like most. I feel very important in my beautiful new dress. How I wish there were many birthdays every year!

A Birthday Party Essay in 250 to 300 words

My friend and neighbour, Natasha, turned five years old recently and her parents held a birthday party for her. All the kids in the neighbourhood were invited. I was one of those invited. The party began at 6:30 p.m. at the house of the birthday girl. She wore a beautiful new dress. About twenty children were there. All of them were in their best clothes. Natasha’s mother served soft drinks to the guests. Then we had a round of games like ‘musical chairs’, ‘treasure hunt’ etc. It was fun and enjoyable. The winners were given prizes. By now more children had come to the party.

It was time to move on to the next program. A huge cake was brought out and put in the middle of the hall. The cake had five candles on it indicating the age of the birthday girl. The guests sang “Happy Birthday to Natasha” in the chorus as she cut the cake and blew the candles. The children clapped their hands in joy. Balloons were burst and cake pieces were served to all the guests. This was followed by giving and receiving gifts. All the guests gave presents to the girl and wished her all the best. In turn, all the children were also given gifts. By then it was 8 p.m. All the people were hungry and tired. Soon dinner was served. We all had our food which was quite delicious.

Shortly afterward people started leaving thanking the hosts for an enjoyable evening. I was also eager to go home and look at the present I had got. I wished Natasha all the best and slowly left the place.

Essay on Birthday Party in English ( 400 words )

Everybody likes to celebrate his birthday but children are particularly fond of celebrating their birthday. I turned twelve last month. I decided to celebrate my birthday with the usual pomp and show. I invited all my friends and relatives to my birthday party which was to be held in the evening on that particular day. My friends and I had decorated the room well with balloons and bunting where the party was to be held.

It became difficult for me to decide which dress I should wear for the party. Different friends of mine suggested different dresses. Finally, I chose the pink dress which had been sent by my aunt from Paris. Everybody at the party appreciated my dress. The guests started coming in the afternoon. By the evening, our house was full of guests and my friends.

I was glad to note that all my relatives and friends whom I had invited, had reached punctually. I blew twelve candles which were placed on the chocolate bedecked charming cake baked by a renowned baker of the town. Everybody clapped loudly.

As I started cutting the cake, all the guests and my friends spoke out in chorus “Happy Birthday to you.” Then everybody was given a piece of cake and drinks.

My father had also arranged an elaborate orchestra for the occasion. The tunes displayed by the orchestra were, indeed, marvelous and everybody there automatically started dancing to the sweet melodious tunes.

Then the dinner was held after which a brief session of skits, titbits, and jokes was held. My friend Savita, was declared the best clown for her mimicry, funny talks, and titbits. She was given a precious watch as a prize by my father.

As the guests left, I was tempted to have a glance at the gifts I had received. I found all the gifts precious since they were presented with genuine love and affection. The monetary value of a gift could not sway me to value any gift more or less than others. It is thus that even at this tender age I have realized that money does not always rule the roost.

Birthday Party Essay: Birthdays are celebrated in the most gracious way as they come once a year. Inviting friends and relatives for cute parties at home and treating them with special celebrations bring in happiness and joy on the day. Elders pour their blessings and wish them a long journey ahead in life. Parents decorate their houses, arrange lighting and music systems, and spread tables with lovely snacks, juices and desserts for everyone to have a great feast.

Below we have provided a short composition on my birthday party, useful for paragraph and essay writing competitions.

Essay on My Birthday Party 200 Words in English

We have provided My Birthday Party Essay, suitable for class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6.

My birthday is my favourite day of the entire year. Not because of the presents or the cake or the decorations, but rather because of the special attention and love I get from my close friends and family. The thought of being a year older is always surreal and exciting. I don’t normally like to have birthday parties, but my small surprise birthday party last year was unique and very special.

Some people wouldn’t really define it as a party, because I didn’t have lots of guests and I didn’t play party games. It was my first week at university, and to celebrate my birthday, my friends wished me at 12 AM and gave me plenty of hugs. We decided to watch a movie of my choice, so I chose a horror movie. We ate lots of food, chatted and listened to music, which made for a nice, small party.

Later in the day, I went to see my family, who surprised me with the prettiest birthday cake I’d ever seen. The edge of the cake was completely made of Kit Kat’s, and the top was sprinkled with M&Ms. I blew the candles, cut the cake and cheered as I opened birthday presents. I played around with my younger siblings and watched a movie with them.

I think the reason this birthday party of sorts is memorable for me is because it was my first week in a new place. I was very frightened and nervous, but spending time with friends and family because of my birthday helped me feel more comfortable.

essay story birthday party

For this birthday party personal narrative prompt, children have to write about an unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment at a birthday party.

*This post contains affiliate links.  For more information, see my disclosures  here .*

Common Core State Standards

NOTE: This lesson can address the following Common Core State Standards:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.3, W.1.3, W.2.3, W.3.3, W.3.3.B, W.3.3.C, W.3.3.D, W.4.3, W4.3.A, W.4.3.B, W.4.3.C, W.4.3.D, W.4.3.E, W.5.3, W.5.3.A, W.5.3.B, W.5.3.C, W.5.3.D and W.5.3.E.

NOW THE LESSON!

To get a full understanding on how I conduct each writing lesson you may want to read the Writing Prompts Introduction post.  The birthday part personal narrative lesson outlined below (and all other prompts posted) will make more sense and be easier to follow and use.  Here’s the lined paper I use for Grades K-2  and  Grades 2-7

(The samples I give in the lesson outline below come from sample #2 above (when the dog stepped on a new toy.)

birthday party personal narrative

Tell the Story Line

Tell the storyline: “You’re at a birthday party doing something.  All of a sudden, an unusual, surprising, fun or funny thing happens.”

While kids LOVE to talk about birthday parties, I’ve noticed that it takes them some time to really think of a “moment” to write about.  After telling the story line, give your students plenty of time to think through their past and decide on a special birthday party moment to use in their writing.

Give them some examples to help them think as well.

I taught this lesson not too long ago to a small group of 5 students, ages 6-9.  Some of their surprise moments were:

  • At a gym party, one girl fell off the parallel bars.
  • At a friend’s party, the dog stepped on a new toy the boy had just received and broke it.
  • An example I gave was when the folding table collapsed while I was cutting my father’s birthday cake!

Show the 5 Sections

  • Introduction  (Time, Place, People)
  • Before the moment
  • Reaction/Action
  • Conclusion (Thoughts for the future)

Remember:  K-1 st Graders are encouraged to write 1 sentence for each section, 2 nd Graders 2 sentences, 3 rd Graders 3 sentences and so on.

NOW TO WRITE!

Guide the students through the following steps so that their birthday party personal narrative is organized and complete.

  • To begin writing, the students hook their reader by writing sounds that are heard at the party.

Crack! Pop!, Hee-Haw!, “Happy Birthday Jackson!”, Aggh!, etc.

  • Write when, whose party, where and who was there.  Older students can elaborate and include the weather, time of day, month, season etc.

It was summer time.  It was my friend, Jackson’s birthday.  We were at his house.  There were 7 friends there.

  • Describe what everyone was doing BEFORE the unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment.

Jackson had opened all of his presents before I got there.  When I got there, I was watching Jackson and his friend battling with tiny robots.  He had gotten the robots for his birthday.

  • Next, describe the unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment.

All of a sudden, Jackson’s dog came inside and stepped on one of the robots.  The robot BROKE!  It was brand new!

  • Write what everyone did after the unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment.

We all grabbed a nerf gun and started shooting at the dog.  He started running away.  Jackson was mad.  I was mad too.

  • Lastly, write any lessons that were learned or thoughts for the future.

If I ever have a dog at a party I’ll make sure he’s outside or tied up away from my new presents!

EASY ART ACCENTS

Once the students are finished writing they can add a  birthday art accent.

5.  Once the students have found their match, they sit down next to each other.

6.  After all pairs of students are seated, choose one pair to go to the whiteboard to write a sentence using the word on their card AND a specific word that you have chosen for them to work on (i.e. friend ).

My Birthday Essay

Birthdays are often a joyous occasion for a person and their loved ones. People celebrate their birthdays in different ways, for instance, by partying, praying, or going on a trip. Here are a few sample essays on “My Birthday”.

100 Words Essay On My Birthday

My favourite day of the year for me is my birthday, which is on December 20. It's the day when I can do whatever I feel like, and I am made to feel extra special by my parents. My birthdays are always planned in advance. My parents always made an effort to prepare for my birthdays. When I was younger they bought me new clothes, new shoes, and new accessories so that I could dress my best.

My Birthday Essay

They also used to take me to the market and get me to buy may favourite toys and video games. As I got older, slight changes emerged in the way we celebrate my birthday. Now, instead of receiving toys as a gift from my parents, I receive money. My family and friends gather around me to sing "Happy Birthday" as I cut the cake, and shower me with their blessings and good wishes.

200 Words Essay On My Birthday

I believe that it is a privilege for us to get to celebrate our birthdays, for a huge chunk of children does not get this opportunity. I believe birthdays are also a time for us to realise our responsibilities and take a step towards fulfilling them. I always make different plans for my birthday every year, but one thing that is common every year is that my dad and I visit the temple and give out sweets to the poor as we leave. It brightens my morning to see the children's smiles.

Gifting The Needy | Because my birthday falls in the chilly month of December, I made the decision last year to purchase winter clothing for poor and needy families living close to my home rather than spending money on a party and decorations on my birthday. My parents supported and helped me when I discussed this idea with them.

The Celebrations | We went shopping for clothing in the afternoon, including sweaters, jackets, socks, gloves, and other necessities, and distributed them among underprivileged children. The greatest gift they gave me was their joy and well wishes. We had a simple family dinner after returning home, which was a great way to end my day.

500 Words Essay On My Birthday

I, like many of us, am always excited about celebrating my birthday. In fact, my planning of my birthday celebrations begins weeks and months before the actual day. I also get my parents to brainstorm and suggest how we would celebrate my birthday.

One thing I always ensure is that my birthday celebrations should involve the most special people of my life, that is, my family and friends, and that I should also do some good to the needy and underprivileged children. Here is a detailed explanation of how I celebrated my birthday in one of the previous years.

Celebrations At School

On my birthday, which was on December 20’ 2008, the whole school sang a birthday song for me in the morning assembly. I wore my favourite dress to school instead of the school uniform and distributed sweets among all students and teachers. For my friends who reside far from my house, I planned a party.

We went for lunch, my father picked us up and drove us to a restaurant. They were all talking happily as they ate lunch. After lunch and dessert, my father dropped off my friends at their houses before we returned home.

Evening Celebrations

I had a variety of plans for the evening. A birthday party was planned by my parents at home with lovely decorations and a big theme cake.

The Cake | The decoration was done by an event planner, and the cake was also customised. It was of light blue and pink colour and had detailing made of cream-like flowers and leaves, with two candles attached at the top of it. It was made of two layers, the first layer was of strawberry flavour, and the other was of vanilla.

What We Did | By 5:30, all of my friends and family members had arrived wearing party clothes. They all wished me birthday. Around six o'clock, we had begun playing games like races, musical chairs, and other activities. After playing, I cut the cake, and everyone handed me gifts. Although I had to wait, I was very eager to open the gifts. After the cutting of the cake, dinner was served, with a few starters, and both vegetarian and non-vegetarian main course. I also gave the guests a return gift as an expression of thanks. The return gift consisted of a small ‘thank you’ card and some chocolates.

Gifts I Got

Everyone went back to their homes after dinner, and I started opening the gifts, no matter small or big. I received one Barbie doll set, some chocolates, video games and one handmade card made by my friend. I became emotional on seeing the handmade card as it was beautifully crafted, having some pictures of my friends attached to it. I kept this card safely inside my almirah so that it remained as it is and did not get lost.

My parents and I were feeling incredibly exhausted, but we were happy that we had a great party and a meaningful day. My parents got emotional thinking that time was flying by too fast, and soon I would grow up enough to get married and leave their house.

Essay: A birthday party

' src=

Every year on the day we were born, we celebrate our birthday. My family and I see my birthday as a very significant occasion. Every year on the day of my birthday, we have a celebration at our home. We make calls to our family and friends and spend the day together. I adore today. For kids, their birthdays are the most memorable day of the year. Children enjoy various activities, get together with friends and family, receive many gifts, and make wishes as they blow out the candle on their unique birthday cake on this day filled with celebrations. All of them are enjoyable and enduring experiences that kids will never forget.

A person’s birthday is one of the most special days of their life, and the planning and celebration of a joyful birthday party are what make it the most enjoyable. It’s the day when I receive special treatment and a pass for everything! My birthdays are always planned. If it’s a school day, I must go as normal, but after school, I have a party with friends and neighbors scheduled for the evening. My parents normally take me out during the day on days off from school. We enjoy fun in my favorite location. Then, we return home to enjoy ourselves even more at the evening party.

My parents regularly make advance preparations for my birthdays to ensure a flawless celebration. Nearly a week before my birthday, I choose my outfit, choose the cake, prepare the party activities, and make other similar decisions so that everything is ready in time. Every year, my parents get me a different cake with a design I like. My favorite superheroes, the Avengers, were the focus this year. I always invite my classmates and neighborhood acquaintances to my birthday celebration so that we may celebrate together. I enjoy giving my birthday speech to my friends and family to express my gratitude and admiration for them.

When my birthday comes on a school day, we are excused from wearing uniforms, so I dress differently for the day. I bring two bags of candy for my students to share. My professors and classmates treat me well on my birthday, so it’s always enjoyable. I enjoy giving chocolates to each student in my class and make sure to give one extra to each of my buddies.

We have the party scheduled for this evening at home. My mother had already decorated the house and prepared it for the party when I got home from school. In the evening, when everyone arrived, we cut the cake. Then, we all eagerly eat the excellent food my mother prepares. We also enjoy playing a lot of games and having a great time. Finally, it’s time to start opening gifts. As soon as everyone has left, I open my gifts. Since I have to wait to see what may be inside each new package, this is my favorite time of the day.

The Birthday Party

By harold pinter, the birthday party essay questions.

Discuss Stanley and Meg’s relationship.

Stanley and Meg's relationship is complicated and ambiguous, but clearly shows how depressed they both are. In the most obvious way, they are boarder and boardinghouse owner. However, there is also a mother/son dynamic at work. Meg mothers Stanley, fussing over his breakfast and kidding with him at the table. Most strange is their sexual dynamic. She also flirts with him by invading his room, tickling him, and affectionately touching his arm. She demands kisses in return for good behavior. Stanley responds to all her affronts with disgust, but this arguably comes from feeling trapped within her house. He makes no effort to change his life, and so must see his acceptance of her as the cost of living anonymously. Likewise, she sees in him an escape from the drudgery of her banal life with Petey. No matter what the truth of their relationship is, it is clear they accept it to fill in deeper fears and insecurities.

How does the state of the boardinghouse mirror the personalities of the characters?

The house, which is untidy and poorly kept, reflects the characters of Meg, Stanley, and Petey, though in different ways. Meg is scatterbrained, and the boardinghouse suffers for her lack of attention to it. She spends too much time prancing around in front of Stanley to notice that her home is in disrepair. In short, she is more interested in her delusion of the house than in the house itself. Stage productions and films of The Birthday Party further illuminate Meg’s untidiness with scenes in a dirty but quaint living room and dilapidated kitchen. The house also reflects Stanley's moodiness and generally unkempt appearance. He lives in a state of disruption. Finally, Petey's general disinterest in his life is reflected by his disinterest in the house. He would rather glance at the paper.

Discuss Stanley’s and Lulu’s interaction in Act I. What does it show about Stanley?

Lulu is interested in Stanley, but he is unwilling to consider any deeper relationships. He is too much committed to an anonymous life of lethargy. Lulu's questions bother Stanley, since they touch on the past he would like to forget. Further, he is bothered by her sexual interest in him. More than anything, she feels bad for him and treats him like a disgruntled child. When she leaves, Stanley washes his face, which suggests their sexual tension and the fact that he has little use for such sexuality. He needs to be alone, perhaps to stay hidden from his past, and perhaps because he is too depressed for anything else.

Stage directions are essential in a play. Discuss Pinter’s stage directions in relation to character development.

After Meg gives Stanley his toy drum, he hangs it around his neck and parades around the table. Pinter uses this scene to develop Stanley’s character, to reveal how he is both a conformist and a rebel. As he playfully taps a beat on the drum while circling the table and then begins to bang it “as if he were possessed,” Pinter uses very specific stage directions so that the action of the play, which was once stagnant, suddenly explodes. This creates tension, drama and unease. So much of the play has been unspoken and tense, and now the violence is made manifest. The same thing happens with the stage directions at the end of Act II. By using very few stage directions and then using specific ones, Pinter makes sure that his dramatic moments serve as a pay-off to the lingering tension of the play.

Pinter was influenced by the surrealists. Provide one example of surrealism within the play.

Surrealism needs the pretense of reality, which is then subverted. The play is full of such juxtapositions from its very opening. The interrogation scene in Act II is a particularly great example. While the set-up is recognizable - they are interrogating a suspect - their language is nonsensical and somewhat irrelevant. What matters is the power dynamic, which is exaggerated and menacing because they do not rely on language to cement it. Goldberg and McCann here appear prophetic and haunting in their interrogation of poor Stanley, who is neither guilty nor innocent, and yet is both. The play’s essence of surrealism lies in the chaos between that which is real and that which is imagined.

Describe Stanley’s decent into madness.

Stanley is a depressed character, rumpled and unkempt. He is nasty and rude to everyone expect Petey, to whom he shows a begrudging respect. However, these behaviors mask a deep depression that Goldberg and McCann exacerbate to lead him into madness. They threaten his poorly constructed world. From the moment he hears that two men are coming, he grows less arrogant and more on edge. His conversation with McCann in Act II reveals that he has lost control of his life, and is now desperate. The interrogation scene, though it only obliquely mentions specific offenses, drives him into a guilt-fueled stupor that then explodes into full-on madness during the party itself. Rather than physically harming Stanley, Goldberg and McCann attack his delusions, and all he has left is silence.

There are several acts of submission within the play. Provide an example and discuss the motivation of the characters.

The play is very much concerned with power struggles. One example is the interrogation scene in Act II. Goldberg and McCann must first convince Stanley to sit down, an act which proves difficult since he refuses to cooperate. Despite McCann’s forceful attitude and Goldberg’s sugarcoated words, Stanley will not sit until they corner him. Their intent is to reinforce the power dynamic, to make sure he knows that they have the upper hand. Although Stanley refuses to sit from fear that they will physically harm him, he is not relieved to be untouched when he sits. Instead, he is more harmed by accepting the power dynamic, since it leads him further down his slow descent to madness.

Pinter often used language as a buffer between silence and action in his plays. Describe a scene within the The Birthday Party when language was used to create silence.

Goldberg’s speeches often silence another character's opinions or arguments. For instance, when he and McCann first arrive, Goldberg speaks at length about his Uncle Barney in an effort to calm McCann. Goldberg uses his stories to distract, educate, and perhaps annoy. His words are so closely cropped together that they engender a silence, a void after he finishes speaking. His words are not confusing, but his strange use of them creates confusion. Language seems more a tool or a weapon in this way.

Elements of realism are markedly present within the play. How is realism used in The Birthday Party?

The boardinghouse and its inhabitants define realism within Pinter’s play. Meg is the simpleminded matron, her husband the inattentive owner, and Stanley their disgruntled guest. The domestic scene of the living room, table, and chairs creates a comparison to other popular English plays of the time period. Further, the relationships - a potential affair between matron and boarder, a pleasant but dull marriage relationship, a pretty young girl from the town - all seem recognizable. It is important that Pinter make these elements seem so realistic so that his subversion of them is more affecting. By stripping away the layers of realism, by revealing long hidden truths and creating chaos, the surrealist elements of the play soon take the foreground, leaving realism and any illusion of truth behind.

Are Petey and Meg happily married? Provide examples to support your argument.

It can be argued that Petey and Meg are happy because they have obviously made a life together. They are used to each other’s personalities, and have set a very strict routine wherein Meg prepares Petey’s breakfast, they talk to one another in the morning, and then Petey goes off to work. Neither Petey nor Meg is openly affectionate toward one another, but neither are they rude or dismissive. Lastly, Petey shows his protectiveness when he lies to her about Stanley's whereabouts in Act III.

However, this complacency bleeds into disinterest. Meg frequently forgets his tea and even forgets he was not at the party. In fact, Meg clearly gets more validation from Stanley's cruelty than she does from Petey's pleasant kindness. Further, it seems plausible that he knows of her sexual attraction to Stanley, but ignores it. Ultimately, the question is whether happiness comes from unpleasant passions or from pleasant, comfortable apathy.
