Passing the  Michigan bar exam  is an essential part of being admitted into the state’s bar and beginning a successful career practicing law.

This guide will break down everything you need to get started, including:

• The bar exam’s eligibility criteria, content, and structure;

Michigan Bar Exam Overview

The Michigan Board of Law Examiners (the Board) administers the bar exam and manages the admission of applicants to the state’s bar. It holds the exams twice a year — on the last Tuesday and Wednesday in February and July. The exams take place at the Kellogg Center in February and the Breslin Center in July.

Candidates must file their exam application and pay the $400 fee by Nov. 1 if they wish to take the February exam. Alternatively, the application deadline for the July exam is March 1.

While candidates can file a late application electronically up until Dec. 15 for the February exam and May 15 for the July exam with an additional $100 fee, the Board won’t accept any submissions received after these dates.

Keep in mind that in order to be eligible for the Michigan bar exam, you’ll need to satisfy the following criteria per the Rules for the Board of Law Examiners:

• Age Requirement:  All applicants to the state bar must be 18 years of age or older.
• Good Moral Character:  The Board must determine that each candidate applying for admission to the bar possesses the fitness, ability, and good moral character needed to practice law in this state.
• Qualifying Undergraduate Education:  All candidates must have completed at least 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours toward an undergraduate degree. This education must be obtained from an accredited school, which includes universities and junior or community colleges.
• Located in the United States, its territories, or the District of Columbia; and
• Requires three school years of study for full-time students and four for part-time students to graduate. (Each school year must last a minimum of 30 weeks)

Note:  Law schools approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) are automatically considered sufficiently reputable and qualified.

Michigan Exam Structure

In 2021, the state of Michigan adopted the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The UBE adheres to the following structure:

• Multistate Performance Test (MPT): Two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test Questions (20%)
• Multistate Essay Examination (MEE): Six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam questions (30%)
• Multistate Bar Examination (MBE): 200-question multiple-choice exam (50%)

Of the UBE exam’s possible total of 400 points, candidates must score at least 268 in order to receive a passing mark.

In addition to the UBE, candidates also must obtain a passing score of 75 or greater on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) in order to earn admission to the Michigan bar.

Multistate Performance Test (MPT)

The MPT is made up of two 90-minute parts, and the materials for each part contain a “File” and a “Library.”

The File consists of source documents that contain all of the facts of a specific case.

As the examinee, the assignment that you will need to complete will be described in a memorandum from a supervising attorney.

The File can also include things like transcripts of interviews, depositions, pleadings, trials, client documents, newspaper articles, police reports, and any other similar documents.

Keep in mind that irrelevant information is generally included, and facts are sometimes incomplete, ambiguous, or even conflicting.

This is meant to mirror legal practice, in which a client’s or supervising attorney’s version of events may be unreliable or entirely incomplete. In such a scenario, you will be expected to recognize when facts are inconsistent or missing in the exam and identify sources of additional facts.

The Library part contains things like cases, statutes, and regulations, some of which may also not be relevant to the task that you will be assigned. You will need to be able to extract the legal principles required to analyze the legal problem you’ll be presented with and perform the requested task.

Multistate Essay Exam (MEE)

The MEE consists of six 30-minute sections that can cover a variety of legal areas, including:

• Civil Procedure
• Business Associations (e.g., Agency and Partnership, LLCs, Corporations, etc.)
• Conflict of Laws
• Constitutional Law
• Contract Law
• Criminal Law
• Trust and Estates

Keep in mind that questions can often include issues in more than one area of law. This means that it’ll be important to ensure that you have a “wide” range of understanding rather than a deep focus on one or two subjects.

Multistate Bar Exam (MBE)

The MBE is made up of 200 multiple-choice questions, which are broken down into 175 scored questions and 25 unscored questions.

The exam is broken down into two three-hour sections, with one administered in the morning and one in the afternoon, both of which contain 100 questions each.

Keep in mind that there are no scheduled breaks during either one of the sections.

All 175 scored questions on the exam are distributed evenly, with 25 questions being attributed to each of the following seven topics:

• Real Property
• Criminal Law and Procedure

Each question on the MBE exam will have four potential answers. You should choose what you believe is the best answer — keep in mind that scores are based on the number of questions answered correctly, and points are  not subtracted  for answering incorrectly.

Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE)

The MPRE is made up of 60 multiple-choice questions (50 scored questions and 10 unscored questions) and is administered via Pearson VUE.

Like the MBE exam, each question offers four possible answers — one of which is correct.

The exam’s content is based on law that relates to the conduct and discipline of attorneys and judges and includes the ABA’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and Model Code of Judicial Conduct as well as important constitutional common law and generally accepted principles.

In relation to questions of professional responsibility in the context of evidentiary issues (e.g., litigation sanctions, attorney-client evidentiary privilege, etc.), the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Federal Rules of Evidence will apply  unless otherwise stated .

Note:  You will have two hours to complete the MPRE exam in its entirety.

How to Pass the Michigan Bar Exam

In order to give yourself the best chance of passing the Michigan UBE on your first attempt, it’s important to take enough time to make sure you’re adequately prepared.

Michigan Bar Exam Tips

Despite the infamous difficulty of Michigan’s bar exam, passing it on your first attempt is definitely possible with the right tools and preparation techniques.

Here are a few key tips that should aid you in your licensing journey:

• Start strong in your first year.  This is important due to the fundamental areas of law practice that the first year of law school generally covers, such as contract, tort, and constitutional law
• Leverage academic support . If your law school offers additional support services aimed at improving your preparation, use these as much as possible. This can involve one-on-one tutoring, academic counseling, and mock exam programs
• Obtain practical legal experience . If possible, gain as much practical experience as you can during law school (e.g., through summer internships, mock trials, etc.). This experience can go a long way in cementing your legal knowledge
• Adopt a broad study approach.  When studying for the bar, aim for a wide-ranging understanding of various subjects rather than an in-depth study of a few. This is important given the huge amount of content you’ll need to learn for this test

Most importantly, make sure you remain consistent so you don’t have to resort to last-minute cramming.

Research shows people retain a higher degree of information — and more easily — when revisiting old content vs. learning it for the first time. This is known as Ebbinghaus’s Forgetting Curve.

Other Michigan Bar Requirements

Apart from qualifying for and passing the Michigan bar exam, you’ll need to meet several other requirements in order to become a licensed attorney in the state. These include:

• Satisfying the Character and Fitness Requirements
• Completing the Michigan Law Basics Online Training
• Getting Sworn in With a Michigan Court
• Applying to the State Bar of Michigan (SBM)

1. Satisfying the Character and Fitness Requirements

As part of the process to qualify for admission to the Michigan state bar, you must successfully pass a character and fitness investigation. This’ll verify you possess the qualities necessary to practice law, such as honesty, reliability, and a respect for the law and the rights of others.

This process starts once you submit your Affidavit of Personal History (APH) with the state bar and pay the relevant fees. This comprehensive questionnaire contains 58 questions about your background, academic record, and employment history that you must submit under oath to the state bar.

While no specific actions will automatically deny you admission to the Michigan state bar, you’ll be considered holistically based on your past conduct. This process checks all parts of your character and ability to practice law, but certain issues may face deeper scrutiny like:

• Abuse of the legal process
• Academic misconduct
• Acts involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation
• Evidence of mental or emotional instability
• Neglect of professional obligations
• Unlawful activities

Your candor throughout this process will play a large role in determining your fitness to practice law in Michigan. Making false statements or intentionally omitting information on the APH can be a telling indicator of your current character and fitness.

Note:  Ultimately, it’s your burden to prove with convincing evidence that your character warrants admission to the bar.

2. Completing the Michigan Law Basics Online Training

As of Feb. 15, 2023, the Michigan Supreme Court (MSC) and the Board require all applicants to complete the Michigan Law Basics online training course in order to receive their official UBE results. It comes with a $99 fee.

Designed by the Board and the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), this course gives candidates a foundation in the six major areas of law practice in this state:

• Civil Litigation
• Probate and Estate Planning
• Torts and No-Fault Law

The course takes around 12 hours to finish. In this time, you’ll need to work your way through six lessons and answer two “hurdle” questions at the end of each one. You’ll then receive a unique certificate of completion, which you’ll need to download and submit to the Board by  email  as part of the bar admissions process.

While you can register for this course at any time after graduating from law school, access to it will only remain valid for 60 days from your registration date. If you fail to complete the training within this period, you must re-register and pay the fee again.

3. Getting Sworn in With a Michigan Court

After passing the bar exam, you’ll receive a written certification by mail that you’ll need in order to be sworn in as an attorney in Michigan. You can either present this individually to a Michigan circuit court or attend a mass admission ceremony.

If you want to be sworn-in individually, you’ll need to contact a local Michigan circuit court in order to schedule your ceremony. It’s important to note that not all judges have the ability to swear in candidates virtually, so you’ll need to check with the court if you’re interested in this option.

When it comes to mass ceremonies, there’s a variety of different Michigan bar associations and circuit courts that hold them.

For example, the Washtenaw County Bar Association is a good option because it hosts several virtual admission ceremonies throughout the year. Alternatively, you can find more information regarding other admission ceremony options by emailing  [email protected] .

Regardless of which path you choose, a licensed Michigan attorney will need to make a motion for your admission in open court. This makes it easier for most applicants to opt for a mass admission ceremony in which the host bar association will organize someone to make this motion for you. If you have a relative or friend that’s qualified as a Michigan attorney, however, having them swear you in individually is also an option.

Once a licensed attorney makes the motion to swear you in, the court will have you take the Lawyer’s Oath and officially allow you to join the SBM by putting through an order. Right after the ceremony, you’ll need to get a copy of this order and submit it to the SBM.

Note:  You’ll only have three years to present the admission order before it expires.

4. Applying to the State Bar of Michigan

After being sworn in, prospective attorneys in this state must submit an  online application  to the SBM. As noted above, you can’t complete your SBM application without a copy of the order of admission from your swearing-in ceremony.

Upon receipt of your application, payment, and order of admission, the SBM will send you an email within 10 business days that contains your “P number.” This number is what registers your license to officially practice law within this state.

Admission Without Examination

The state of Michigan permits admission on motion without examination. In order to qualify for this admission option, however, you must meet the following requirements listed under Rule 5 of the Supreme Court Rules Concerning the State Bar of Michigan:

• Meet the educational and fitness requirements under Rules 1 and 2(B);
• Be licensed to practice law in a US jurisdiction;
• Be in good standing with the bar in the jurisdiction(s) you’re admitted;
• Demonstrate an intention to either practice law in Michigan or teach law full time at a well-known and recognized Michigan law school; and
• Actively practiced law as your principal occupation;
• Taught law full time at a respected US law school; or
• Served in the US military as a legal officer (e.g., as a judge advocate or legal specialist). This must be officially confirmed by a high-ranking officer or their representative, including the dates in which you served

If you satisfy the requirements outlined above, you may download, complete, and submit the  Application for Admission Without Examination  by mail. Next, you’ll need to fill out an application for a Request for Preparation of a Character Report online at  this website .

You also must return money orders in the amounts of $800 to the State of Michigan and $550 to the National Conference of Bar Examiners, respectively.

It’s worth noting that the application process for admission without examination isn’t based on reciprocity. Attorneys from any US jurisdiction are eligible as long as they meet the criteria outlined above.

Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam is a two-hour exam consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. The exam tests your knowledge and understanding of the ethical standards of the legal profession chronicled in the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct and Model Code of Judicial Conduct.

The exam is offered nationwide each March, August and November. Many students take the exam sometime after their first year of law school, but typically after taking Professional Responsibility. Michigan Bar Exam

The Michigan Bar Exam is a two-day exam, administered in East Lansing on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July.

Beginning in February 2023, Michigan is administering the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The UBE is coordinated by National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) and is composed of the  Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) , two  Multistate Performance Test (MPT)  tasks, and the  Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) . The UBE tests knowledge of general principles of law, legal and factual analysis, reasoning, and communication skills to determine readiness to enter legal practice in any jurisdiction. It is uniformly administered, graded, and scored and results in a portable score that can be transferred to other UBE jurisdictions. Jurisdictions that use the UBE may also require applicants to complete a  jurisdiction-specific law component . Michigan requires all applicants to take the Michigan Law Basics online training, which, as of October 2022, is in development.

Day 1: Michigan Exam

There are 400 points available on the UBE; you must achieve a 268 to pass in Michigan. Other jurisdictions may have different cut score. The MBE is 50% of your score, the MEE is 30%, and the MPT is 20%.

Day 1: Essay exams

The essay portion is administered Tuesday, the first day of the exam. There are six thirty-minute essays in the MEE , which you will have three hours to complete. The essays cover all of the subjects on the MBE, plus Business Associations, Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, and Secured Transactions (UCC).

On Tuesday, you will also take the MPT , which is designed to test an examinee's ability to use fundamental lawyering skills in a realistic situation and to complete a task that a beginning lawyer should be able to accomplish. The MPT is not a test of substantive knowledge. Rather, it is designed to evaluate certain fundamental skills lawyers are expected to demonstrate regardless of the area of law in which the skills are applied. You are given a File, which includes the facts of the legal issue that you are analyzing. You are also given a Library, which includes the law you need to analyze the issue at hand.

Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (multiple choice)

The MBE is administered Wednesday and consists of 200 total multiple choice questions (175 scored and 25 "test questions"). You will have three hours to complete 100 questions in the morning, and three hours to complete the second half in the afternoon. 

Seven subjects are tested: Constitutional Law, Contracts/Sales, Criminal Law/Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, Torts and, Civil Procedure. They are weighted about equally.

New York State Bar Skills Competency Requirement

JD students who commenced their law studies after July 2016 who apply to the New York State Bar must use one of five pathways to establish satisfaction of the Skills Competency Requirement and Professional Values Bar Admission Requirement .

All Wayne Law JD students meet the requirements for Pathway 1, which " allows an applicant to satisfy the skills competency and professional values requirement by submitting a certification from the applicant's law school confirming that (1) the law school has developed a plan identifying and incorporating into its curriculum the skills and professional values that, in the school's judgment, are required for its graduates' basic competence and ethical participation in the legal profession, and has made this plan publicly available on the law school's website; and (2) the applicant has acquired sufficient competency in those skills and sufficient familiarity with those values. "

The law school certifies all students as having acquired sufficient competency in skills and professional values that, in the law school's judgment, are required for basic competence and ethical participation in the legal profession if they complete and receive credit for the following coursework, as part of the overall 86 credits required for the J.D. degree:

• Legal Research and Writing (4 credits)
• Professional Responsibility (2 credits)
• Experiential Learning (6 credits), which must include participation in an externship or clinic.
• Upper-Level Writing Requirement (ULWR)
• The other required courses Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law I, Criminal Law, Property, and Torts covering a variety of skills such as research, analysis, problem-solving, use of facts, written communication, and oral communication.

Completion of these requirements fulfill the learning outcomes of Wayne Law, as adopted by the faculty.

Michigan has adopted the Uniform Bar Exam. The exam is administered over two days.

The written portion of the exam is administered on the first day of the Michigan bar exam. The written portion of the bar exam consists of the Multistate Essay Exam. You will have 3 hours to answer 6 essay questions. You will also have 3 hours to answer 2 Multistate Performance Test questions.

The Multistate Bar Exam (“MBE”) is administered on the second day of the Michigan bar exam. The MBE is a multiple-choice test containing 200 questions. The MBE is split into a morning and afternoon session. Each session consists of 100 questions. You have three hours to complete each session.

Michigan Bar Admissions

Michigan mpre score requirement.

Michigan requires bar exam applicants to pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (“MPRE”). You must score 85 or higher on the MPRE in order to pass in Michigan.

Scoring/Grading and Results

In order to pass the Michigan bar exam, you must score at least 135. The Michigan bar exam score calculation provides that the MBE portion is worth 200 possible points, and each essay is worth 10 points for a total of 150 possible points. A combined score of at least 135 must be earned to pass the bar exam. Michigan bar exam results are usually released in mid-November for the July bar exam and mid-May for the February bar exam.

Reciprocity

Michigan permits admission on motion without examination when an attorney licensed to practice law in the United States satisfies educational and character and fitness eligibility requirements, and the following additional requirements are satisfied:

• Attorney is a member in good standing of the Bar where admitted to practice.
• Attorney intends to practice in Michigan, or to be a full-time instructor at a reputable and qualified Michigan law school.
• Attorney has been, for three of the five preceding years, actively practicing law as a principal business or occupation; or been employed as a full-time instructor at a reputable and qualified law school; or been on active duty in the United States armed forces as a judge advocate, legal specialist, or legal officer.

Preparing for the MEE

Test Format 

The MEE consists of six 30-minute questions. Areas of law that may be covered on the MEE include the following: Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations and Limited Liability Companies), Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts (including Article 2 [Sales] of the Uniform Commercial Code), Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates (Decedents' Estates; Trusts and Future Interests), and Article 9 (Secured Transactions) of the Uniform Commercial Code. Some questions may include issues in more than one area of law. The particular areas covered vary from exam to exam.  

Effective with the July 2026 bar exam, the following areas will no longer be tested on the MEE: Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, and Secured Transactions.

How To Structure Michigan Bar Exam Essay Answers

One key to a high essay score, no matter what bar exam you take, is to make your essay answer easy to give points to. This is most definitely true in Michigan too. We read a lot of high, middle and low scoring essays every single administration in Michigan and these tips all come from this experience. While the questions change every exam, all of the scoring has something in common—the easier the answer is to read, the higher the score is. 1. Avoid Issue Statements!

Yes, you read that right—issue statements are not something that will lead to a high scoring essay. Remember to keep in mind that the bar exam is different than law school. In law school it was impressive to issue spot and tell your professor that you identified the issues. On the Michigan Bar Exam, the questions are very pointed. In other words, it is far less impressive to restate the question in your own words. Plus, restating the question in your own words is a waste of time. This is important to keep in mind because recently the Michigan Bar Exam tends to ask long questions. You don’t want to find yourself wasting time on thing that will not yield a high score.

So, the first thing that you should stop doing is writing issue statements. If you have noticed that some of Michigan’s Examiners’ Analysis have issue statements you should remember that your essay answer should not look like the Examiners’ Analysis for many reasons. What should you do if you do not include issue statements? Keep reading!

2. Instead of Issue Statements Use Headings.

You likely read our first tip and thought, “Well how am I supposed to structure Michigan Bar Exam essay answers if I don’t start with an issue statement?” The answer is simple—use headings. The beautiful thing about headings is that they are quick. If you notice that your exam question asks three specific questions, you likely need three separate headings. You also don’t have to worry about being articulate or wasting time trying to figure out how to re-word the question. Instead, just pick a word or words that describe the issue being tested and use that for your heading. Be sure to bold and underline the headings too, so that way they stand out.

For example, if the essay fact pattern poses two questions (e.g. (1) Will the worker recover medical benefits for his injury? (2) Will the worker recover weekly wage loss benefits?) simply write two headings “(1) medical benefits” and “(2) weekly wage loss benefits.”

Another great thing about headings is that it makes your essay easier to grade. What does that really mean? The easier your essay is to read, the easier it is to give points to, which means it will likely score higher than it otherwise would. Ok, so we lied, there are lots of beautiful things about headings, not just one. The take away—stop using detailed issue statements and instead craft headings.

3. Treat Your Essay Answer Like a Formula.

Our third tip on how to structure Michigan bar exam essay answers is to use a formula. Formula? Yep. You may be sitting there thinking to yourself that you went to law school because you don’t like math. But, this “formula” that we speak of is much easier than any math formula. You should structure Michigan Bar Exam essay answers like a formula so that you don’t forget any important parts. So, under your heading (see points 1 and 2) you should start with something like, “Under Michigan law…” and finish the sentence with the applicable law. Then start a new paragraph and state something like, “In this case…” and insert the relevant application. Then finally, in a separate paragraph, start with, “Therefore,…” and conclude on the issue.

Many of the students that we work with read the essay question and then immediately craft their headings and insert the above “formula” under each heading, so that way they don’t forget any important part. We highly recommend this! Here is an example of what that would look like:

Under Michigan law….

In this case…

Therefore….

Under Michigan law…

It is that simple!

4. Use Separate Paragraphs.

Going back to a point that is important enough to repeat, multiple times, is that you should strive to make your essay easy to read. The easier your essay is to read, the more likely it is that you will receive more points. If your essay is hard to read and you make the grader work to give you points, you are likely missing out! So, in order to make sure that your essay is easy to read, you should not only practice implementing tip number 3 (above) but be sure to use paragraph breaks. We specifically encourage that students give each portion of the formula its own paragraph. That means if your rule statement is two sentences, let it be a stand-alone “paragraph.”

Similarly, if your analysis is brief, let that be in its own paragraph. If it is really long, use separate paragraphs within the analysis. Same rule of thumb with your conclusion. The main reason for this, is so that the grader can quickly look at your essay answer, and without having to read much of anything, can identify that you answered all of the questions posed, that you have a rule, analysis and conclusion for each issue.

5. Be Sure to Conclude Only Once—and Save it for the End.

This tip is SO important! It might be the best advice we have on how to structure Michigan bar exam essay answers. We can’t count how many times we read an essay answer that started out with a conclusion and then re-concluded at the end—except this time concluded the opposite way! Yikes! When an examinee does this they have communicated one thing to the grader—they do not know the right answer! This is a very avoidable error. So, how do you ensure that you never make this mistake? Follow the formula from tip 3 above. You should conclude on each issue ONCE and that conclusion belongs at the end of the response.

If you still need more convincing about how to structure your Michigan Bar Exam essay answer, think of it like this—remember that your grader is human. If the grader starts reading your essay and it opens with an incorrect conclusion, that has just predisposed them to thinking that everything that comes after that incorrect conclusion is also incorrect in some way. Whereas, if you start out with the rule, then move into the analysis and then finally conclude—even if you conclude incorrectly, you are still likely to get more points because they read your rule and analysis without assuming everything was wrong. Now, we are in no way implying or stating that the graders are not careful or fair. Not at all. Instead, we are simply noting that they are human. We have had the opportunity to review hundreds of graded bar exam essays and we can’t stress this enough.
