Question-   Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Businesses should do anything they can to make a profit .

Sample Answer 1-

I do not agree that businesses should do whatever they can to make a profit. I put forward my opinion based on the following ideas. Firstly, every business or institution should have a code of ethics or morality. This primarily indicates that the company should be treating all its customers/clients with respect to their individual or institutional rights. It is a given that companies may sometimes fail to earn a chunk of their profits in certain cases. However, client security is non-negotiable and should be ensured at the outset. Otherwise, these customers or clients will shift to competitors and not return to the original company or business. You can find an example of such a case some years ago when Rose Chemicals (name changed) manufactured a new kind of herbal soap without testing suitably. Hence, this led to severe side effects, rashes, and hives for many users, and many of them filed complaints in several courts across the world. The company CEO took the vital decision to recall all herbal soap products from the manufacturing line and distributors while paying compensation to aggrieved customers for their future treatment and harassment. This led to the company losing a major chunk of its business revenues in a particular year. However, it led to its image being salvaged and helping retain its core customer base. The decision was a tough one. The CEO of the organization acted courageously while understanding that failure to act would cost the company more in the future owing to the lack of clients and revenues altogether and loss of brand image and goodwill.

Secondly, for succeeding in a competitive contemporary business environment, many organizations have to take on each other at various levels. Many companies lose out on profits through reducing product prices. They do not aim for higher profits but create long-term satisfaction for clients. They do this because they want products to be sold and inventory to be cleared while satisfying customers and retaining them for the long haul. They also keep offering free delivery, incentives, coupons, free service, discounts, free online access, returns, etc. This makes older customers happier while also drawing newer ones in the bargain.

To conclude, a business where the sole objective is profit will not succeed in the long run, especially in today’s fast-evolving business landscape. Companies that put their customers and ethics first will ultimately gain and double their profits manifold in the long run. (406 words)

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

I agree with the statement that businesses should be doing anything they can to make a profit. I put forward my opinion based on several points. While there may be scenarios where companies may have to forego profits on account of several reasons, I believe that the abiding goal and motto of the business should be to earn profits in whichever way they deem fit in the circumstances. Businesses should always look at the silver lining and ways to maximize profits. Let me give you an example of what I am trying to opine. Suppose company A and company B are both rivals in the same business that offers organic fruits and vegetables to customers at their dedicated stores and outlets. Now, with the coronavirus-induced lockdown and restrictions at several levels by the authorities, both companies were initially suffering due to a lack of profits from their physical stores. With lower footfalls, both companies were forced to innovate. Company A announced delivery options for customers at a specific cost, hiring delivery executives on salaries based on minimum projections of per-day orders. Company B announced that customers need not come to stores and instead hired delivery executives to deliver goods to customers at no extra cost. Free delivery would be given to customers, and the executives' salaries would be borne by the company itself. A goodwill gesture, yes, but with skyrocketing demand due to the lockdown, Company A ended up earning higher profits from its delivery model, which created a new income channel and buffered for any depletion of in-store orders. Company B ended up foregoing profits instead of paying for delivery and value-added services from its pocket. With its earnings, Company A paid all salaries, retained all staff members, and contributed toward sanitization and other community welfare measures. At the same time, Company B ultimately had to lay off workers or slash their salaries in the interim to tide over things. Which company did better? Company A, of course.

Secondly, I feel that the business can be financially stable without profits and no hiring activity. It is important to keep the entire value chain running for any business, and hence a profit-oriented outlook is what is most important. Companies should always engage with their stakeholders to find out newer products/services that work, tapping unused resources to generate income and using money judiciously for future stability and expansion.

To conclude, companies should do everything they can to make profits, of course, within the bounds of the law and legal provisions. However, it is a competitive landscape out there. They should put their basic needs first, i.e. the ability to keep serving customers, keep monetary inflows coming in and keep retaining and maintaining employees and employment levels overall. Watching my brother transform from a man who had lost his ability to walk to a man who can play basketball with my father kindled my fascination of the physical therapy world. The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates the field of physical therapy to grow faster than average in the upcoming years. I hope to join this field during an exciting time of growth, furthering the rehabilitation of those who have been injured.

Following graduation from ABC Business School, I intend to serve a marketing team in a local physical therapy company, such as Ridgeview Physical Therapy. My short-term goal is to lead a team, furthering success in the Ridgeview area. Due to the popular physical therapy company thirty miles from Ridgeview, much of the local population is unaware of the quality services Ridgeview Physical Therapy has to offer. I hope to increase visits by 40 percent in the first 5 years of my employment. My long-term goal includes extending the company’s reach into surrounding cities, and eventually beyond national barriers, becoming a global marketing manager.

I expect to gain skills and experiences from ABC Business School that will propel my short and long-term goals. I hope to develop an experiential and diverse learning experience and have the opportunity to interact with different groups of people to learn from their business insights and endeavours. From ABC Business School, I seek the tools and resources needed to further engage in my marketing knowledge, perform professional strategic analyses, and re-evaluate my past work experiences. I look forward to taking courses from Professor Jim. W. Reid, who has published the research of the success of Matthews and Marketing in his book, “Matthews Commerce,” which has helped me continue my career this far. I also look forward to taking the unique classes taught by Professor Rachel E. Davis, introducing me to the physical therapy world and enriching my business skills in that area.

When my brother’s car accident in 2011 caused immobility in his left leg, he never thought he would be able to play his favorite sport again. David Andrews, a 1994 graduate from ABC Business School, ensured that that would not come to pass. I spoke with Andrews about his journey, and he told me that it was through the opportunities and education he received from the professors and students at ABC Business School that helped him open his own practice. I hope to follow in Andrews’s footsteps. With the passion I have for the success of Ridgeview Physical Therapy, and the determination I learned from watching my brother, all I need to complete my goals is the knowledge available to me through an MBA at ABC Business School. I look forward to completing my career aspirations using the tools received from ABC Business School to contribute to my professional career.

The world of physical therapy is growing, and with my skills in marketing, I hope to grow the local Ridgeview services across the globe.

In this essay, the applicant is assigned to answer the prompt in approximately 500 words. The admissions officer expects a clear and concise essay that does not veer off the question and exemplifies quality writing, grammar, and punctuation. In questions similar to these, the admissions officers are looking for: Student’s understanding and knowledge in answering questions: The writer explains his short and long-term career goals, referencing the future of the career (Bureau of Labor Statistics) and quantifying his goals (Increase by 40 percent within the first 5 years). A deeper look into who the applicant is: Writer shares personal information that also relates to answering the question (brother in physical therapy). Make sure that any personal information you share does not veer off of the question that needs to be answered. Proper research on the school to adequately answer the second question: Student mentions names of professors who have demonstrated help in the past (professor’s business research book) giving credibility to the student that he believes they will be able to help him in the future. Avoid flattery and only speak of the school in a way that shows proper research and answers the question presented.

Nancy, the CEO of Jasmine Publishing House, bought me a coffee and told me I should invest in warm gloves as we sat down at a corner diner for what would be a game-changing business meeting. As the leading publishing house in Europe, Nancy informed me that JPH was interested in closing a multi-million dollar deal with our fashion magazine, Zoelle, provided we changed the magazine's appearance to attract a broader European audience.

As production manager, my job was to lead and supervise a staff of 30 to match Nancy's vision, working closely with the design team, photographers, production staff and marketing team. After three weeks of heavy brainstorming, we developed a fresh appearance for the magazine.

I invited Nancy to a meeting with me and three of our executive producers. I shared with her the strategy we had created in order to solve our appearance problem, as well as estimated costs and complications. Nancy agreed that the direction our magazine was going fit well with her vision and audience, and that JPH would be happy to work with us within the next week.

Although the team was excited to accept the offer, I was concerned that we were not prepared to complete the project so quickly. Though the executive producers did not understand, as our production team was to begin work on the next issue the following day, I explained that there may include deep financial consequences if we rush into the process. I wanted to ensure that JPH received a consistent layout from Zoelle magazine. Nancy agreed to wait until the upcoming issue was complete before beginning work on the new look.

We began work the following Tuesday, after the latest issue was produced. I collaborated with an eight member marketing team to develop new branding for our magazine and mediated this branding with the design team, ensuring that it was able to blend well with their ideas and insights based on the first meeting with Nancy. I led the operation of the first issue to be published via JPH, supervising 30 employees.

After the issue was published, our sales increased by 42 percent in the first week. After leading the Zoelle team to a business deal close and a fresh start, I learned that with the proper leadership, a staff of varied talents, insights and opinions can work closely together to produce a magazine that continues to increase its sells each issue. My initiative helped provide Zoelle with its largest new contract that year, a $2 million deal. Customers from Europe and the United States commented with positive remarks on the new look, showing interest in the replacement of the former look, which had been being published for seven years.

After this leadership experience, I was able to see my potential as a leader. I can communicate effectively with all members of a group and help connect them with one another to make a larger picture. I protect my business discernment even against an upset crowd, and am able to properly persuade others to understand other perspectives. Through learning more about leadership every day with my work in Zoelle, I hope to continue to strengthen these abilities and witness the success they can bring to media production.

In this essay, the applicant was asked to detail her leadership abilities through the application of a relevant example. She was asked to do this in approximately 550 words, using concise language and proper grammar and punctuation. In questions similar to these, the admissions officers are looking for: Applicant's ability to share leadership qualities with a relevant example: This writer shared leadership qualities of communication (brainstorming with different staffs and helping them connect their ideas together), listening (brainstorming and understanding staff concerns), delegating (ensuring each team did what was supposed to be done), and managing (managed and supervised a staff of 30) through the use of an example from her work with Zoelle Magazine. Proof of a potential growth in these leadership skills: The writer hopes to “continue to strengthen” her leadership skills. She provides examples of how she learned from previous leadership roles. How these skills will help further your career: The writer used an example from her current career and concluded her essay with a look into the potential of leadership in her field.

I looked across my celebratory cheesecake and beamed up at my new coworkers. I couldn't believe I had finally landed my dream job. All of the senior editors were having lunch in the cafe across the street from the bakery where the finance team and marketing team shared dessert. I had been hired as a budget analyst at my favorite magazine. My job was to work alongside the business manager to help create a more healthy marriage between the finance and marketing departments, thus improving our sales and workplace environment. On my way home, I reflected on my relief in finally having an exciting and secure career.

Just three months later, we met at the same bakery where I had celebrated my new job. Every department from our small, close-knit staff was present. As the publication manager began to tell us the news, I remember how our faces fell. Our publication company was going out of business, and every publication was to be shut down. She explained that they had tried to find another publishing company without success.

Not only did I feel as though I failed the company, I also knew that I, as well as the other 17 employees, was out of a job. We went back to our offices and packed up our things. Writers and designers were frantically calling around, asking for open positions. An employee from the finance department began tweaking his resume, and the marketing department apologized to the publication manager and editor-in-chief, who responded graciously.

I had to leave my apartment not long after losing my job. I stayed with a friend on the north side of town as I tried to find a job in a shrinking economic suburb. It took six months to find a position, and though I had to move and leave behind my dream, I found a new way to work toward my new dream.

From this experience, I learned the importance of adaptability. Only through my ability to embrace the change happening around me was I able to find a new job and start a new life with new visions and goals. Applying for my MBA would have sounded bizarre to the disheartened, homeless idealist who lost her dream. But now, after finding in me the strength to persevere, I am able to take what I learned from my previous job and pair it with what I learn from the university. This knowledge will help me ensure that the future companies I work with will not have to endure a similar fallout.

However, if there comes a time when I am again involved in a lost company, I know how to repair. I know how to restore.

In this essay, the applicant was asked to recall a challenging situation to which the writer overcame the boundaries. The writer was asked to do this in approximately 450 words, using concise language and proper grammar and punctuation. In questions similar to these, the admissions officers are looking for: Applicant's ability to identify a challenging moment in her life: This writer uses a relevant example of a challenging situation, describing the challenge of losing a job, losing housing, and having to move to a different city. Examples of how the applicant overcame these challenges: The writer cites her “adaptability” as the reason why she was able to overcome this challenge. Instead of giving up, the applicant tells of applying for other jobs, even ones that were out of her comfort zone and in another city. Brief insights to what the applicant learned from the challenge: This writer learned how to maintain strength, perseverance and adaptability in challenging situations. The applicant tells of continuing the learning process in her MBA program and allowing it to help future companies.

“Gallery Furniture saves you money today!” As a child, these words rang out to me, sandwiched in between the episodes of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh that I gleefully watched every Saturday morning. During commercial breaks, an older gentleman known as Mattress Mack would dominate all 24 inches of my cartoon box with his signature hundred-mile-per-hour pitch, reserved for sputtering off the praises of American-made furniture sold at affordable prices. Mattress Mack reigned as a household favorite in the Greater Houston area; in fact, my cousin and I made games out of memorizing his lines and spitting them out as fast as we could whenever his ads came on TV.

Mack’s distinctive elevator-pitch talking style stemmed from the financial difficulties he faced at the start of his career. At that time, Mack invested his entire life savings in a single ad that aired on two stations. While watching the ad himself, he grew unhappy with the producers’ work and ad-libbed a rapid pitch which would be later recognized as one of his greatest sparks of unconventional genius. Mack's unique re-branding has taught me to recognize the value of bootstrapping and developing creative solutions to solve problems.

Beyond his unorthodox sales strategies, Mack also had a heart that was truly the size of Texas. In August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall and caused $125 billion in damages, and several people that I personally know lost everything. While most of us worried solely about our own survival, Mack opened his two biggest showrooms and provided food to those who needed it most. His heroic actions eventually earned him his own day, August 26th, appropriately named Mattress Mack Day. He has inspired Houstonians just like me to pursue entrepreneurship opportunities that put social focus on the forefront.

As Harvey pummelled through the Gulf Coast, I noted the amount of devastation the hurricane has caused for our local automotive industry. This sparked an idea. As a passionate watchmaker and a car enthusiast, I partnered with my co-founder to create one-of-a-kind wristwatches from wrecked supercars with stories to match. A portion of each sale would then be donated to Habitat for Humanity to rebuild communities affected by natural disasters. My dream came to fruition, and over the last two years, the work I did has gained the attention of Mayor Turner, Capital One Bank, and various other notable individuals and organizations across Texas, Florida, Switzerland, and the UK. Born from a company bootstrapped with a $10,000 award from Capital One Bank, we are now projected to take in a revenue of $500k in the coming year.

Mattress Mack’s unconventional business approaches have taught me that tackling problems with limited capital yields the most innovative solutions and that the numbers, albeit essential, are not the end-all-be-all of a company. His ability to see equal importance in their lesser-noticed counterparts -the people his business serves and the community he resides in- are what sets him apart from traditional bosses as a truly effective leader. His actions have taught me that marrying unconventional problem-solving skills to a strong moral code is the key to greater personal success.

Business Sample Essay Five

Fuqua was the first business school I visited at the beginning of my application journey. No one in my family has ever attended college, let alone business school, so my visit opened a new world of opportunity for me. I sat in the auditorium with 300 other Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) fellows soaking up facts about Fuqua’s collaborative culture, global perspective, and distinguished faculty. My most vivid memory of the experience was at the end of the first day when the Black and Latino MBA Organization (BLMBAO) came on stage and helped me understand what it truly means to be on “Team Fuqua.” Dancing, cheering, and wearing their Blue Devil gear, the students made it easy to see a cohesive community for students of color – one that I have not felt so palpably at any other business school since. As I sat in that auditorium, I began to imagine myself as a part of “Team Fuqua,” and after the visit I became more confident that there was a place for me at Duke. For these reasons, I am seeking a spot in the entering class of 2022.

Post MBA, I plan to work as a Product Manager in an innovative digital healthcare company focused on using technology to transform patient care. Specifically, I would like to work in wireless tech and data analytics focused on chronic disease management similar to Twine Health, a platform integrated into patients' Fitbits to monitor diabetes-related vitals. In preparation for a career in healthcare, I plan on being a part of Fuqua’s Health Care Club (HCC). I look forward to contributing to this community through my perspective in healthcare consulting as well as my experience in the health insurance marketplace. By participating in the HCC, I will leverage the insight from 2nd year students as I navigate the healthcare recruiting process during HCC life line sessions. In time, I hope to return the favor by helping new students navigate recruitment, coursework, and life in Durham. Particularly, I am excited to gain valuable insight into the healthcare industry through programming coordinated by HCC such as the Duke MBA Health Care Conference and panel discussions throughout the year. HCC will not only provide me the knowledge and professional aptitude for a meaningful career in the healthcare sector, but will also grant me a life-long network of Fuqua healthcare leaders. To further promote health, I want to take part in the Fuqua Running & Triathlon Club. As a cross country athlete in high school and college, I look forward to exploring the Raleigh-Durham area and sharing my love of running.

Beyond my involvement in the Fuqua healthcare community, I also plan to join BLMBAO. It is very important for me to be part of a collective of leaders of color that empower each other to reach their full potential in business. For this reason, I am interested in joining the leadership cabinet of BLMBAO and shaping events such as the MBA Minority Business Conference. I want to continue BLMBAO’s work of increasing the visibility of underrepresented minorities, engaging Fuqua on issues of race and inequality, and being an advocate for women of color in business. For example, as a Fellow and alumna of MLT, I will commit myself to building a pipeline for Latina prospective Fuqua MBA students. This will include holding workshops that focus on the application process and challenges specific to Latinas in management.

In the end, Duke is the ideal place for me to become the business leader I know I can be. The opportunities in healthcare at Fuqua with HCC in conjunction with the school’s close proximity to the research triangle are second to none. A Fuqua MBA will give me the opportunity to learn, grow, and lead among lifelong friends. As a part of the incoming class, I will continue to learn more about Fuqua and expect that the “Team Fuqua” spirit will stand out in all of my interactions within the larger community. Just as BLMBAO students inspired me on my first day at Fuqua, I hope to one day inspire a young Latina professional setting her sights on business school.

IELTS Blog & IELTS Mock Test

Ielts exam preparation for a higher band score., ielts essay: as well as making money, businesses also have social responsibilities.

IELTS Essay Topic:

As well as making money, businesses also have social responsibilities.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer: It is sometimes argued that businesses have many important responsibilities towards societal issues along with making money. I completely agree with this notion that corporations should be working on tackling socio-economic problems and should not only concentrate on making money.

Corporations have always been inclined towards making money. It is true that the money driven approaches are fundamentally important to gain financial success. If companies or associates do not work hard to increase profitability, they would not be able to compete in the market in terms of providing more and more employment facility to people, and eventually to help eradicate poverty. In addition, without earning enough money, businesses cannot even invest in raising social values.

However, corporations should have a duty to fulfill societal needs instead of solely striving for more and more money. Social responsibilities mean tackling the global challenges. These most pressing issues include climate change, poverty, inequity and resources or water scarcity. Take Unilever, a pharmaceutical multinational company, as an example- this high-profile organization has had a profound record of giving medical or other financial aid to the most deprived people of developing countries. As a result of these holistic and intensive social measures they are becoming increasingly successful in managing and solving poverty and health related problems in respective impoverished neighbourhoods.

To sum up, while successful and profitable businesses are fundamentally important to boost economy by generating revenues through earning more profit, social and environmental issues should also be included into their priority list of core planes.

Why Money Is So Important In Business

Danni Charis

What is important to your business? What do you pride yourself on? What is the foundation of your company policies? For each and every single business world wide – this could be different. Every single business will have different motivations and differing factors that keep them moving forward and that dictate their aims and goals in business. Some businesses will look to be ‘non-profit’ and aim to reinvest any profit made back into the company or even donated to a good cause. Some businesses will have a huge focus on customer services and make the customer the center of everything they do. There are a lot of things that can become the foundation of a business, and all are valid.

However, we mustn’t fool ourselves. There is one thing above all that is the most important factor to a business: money. Without money, a business hasn’t got much at all . Money may not be the motivating factor behind every single decision that a business makes, but it certainly has a huge place of importance in business. Simply put, a business can’t do anything and won’t amount to much at all without money. That’s the bottom line – and that is why money is almost always going to be the be all and end all of business. It’s like your own finances, if you’ve no money, you can borrow some, take out a loan or use a credit card – but if you continue to build up debt in this form, it will become overwhelming, and creditors will chase you. If you can’t pay your debts, you will have to dissolve your accounts and declare bankruptcy. The same goes for business – there is not a limitless pool of funds that you can draw from, but if you’ve got a lot of cash, you can certainly move assets around to squeeze cash from your business. As for normal business? A lack of money forecasts the end times.

money and business essay

In business, a lack of finance is a huge issue. A business has a lot of costs – you need to pay wages, you need to pay your energy and facility bills, you must pay for the rent of your business premises if you are renting, or the mortgage of the place. A lot of costs are wrapped up in owning and running a business, and if the cash runs dry, these ends can’t be met – not with your money at least.  This puts a huge focus on money for a business – you will always want value, and you will want your business to earn money that is worth your time so you can keep it running, and ideally grow it. Without finances, you don’t have much options at all and this can be a major worry for any business out there.

What do you if your business has no cash ? Well – in the first instance you need to cut down on what you are spending. Take a good look at your yearly budget and try to identify areas of big expenditure – this should come easily as areas with big expenditure are clear. Then, find ways to cut down on your spending. If you’re buying supplies at high cost, see if you could save cash with DontPayFull.com . If your rent is too high, consider moving to a new premises. There should always be something to do to ensure your business can cut losses – if not the short term, then definitely in the long term.

While money is hugely important to a business , a business and owner will always have different motivations, and money won’t always be the major one, despite its clear importance to the world of business. That’s a good way of thinking – businesses are better off ethically if they don’t treat money as the be all and end all as money can lead a business owner towards some drastic, but sometimes necessary decisions that aren’t always right. The best way of looking at it? Do your best to avoid a situation where money isn’t a problem. This might be a bit of a ‘pie in the sky’ situation as businesses will rarely avoid money issues – even the biggest corporations cut costs now and again. However, if you can do your best to ensure that you don’t run into money troubles, or take steps to prepare for times of business austerity, you’ll put yourself and your business at an advantage and give your business a huge chance of surviving. You might not be able to buy that type of insight!

Times Insider

A Finance Reporter Who Invests in Readers’ Well-Being

Taxes. Tuition. Cryptocurrency trading. Since 2008, Ron Lieber has answered hard-hitting questions about personal finance as the Your Money columnist.

A man with glasses and a long-sleeve shirt types on a laptop placed on a table. He is seated next to a woman in an orange dress whose face is not visible.

By Sarah Bahr

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together.

When Ron Lieber arrived at The Wall Street Journal’s office in 2002 for a job interview, a couple of editors immediately sized him up.

“They said, ‘We know what your beat is: beating the system,’” said Mr. Lieber, who had last worked as a senior writer for Fast Company covering management, design and careers. “And now you’re going to come here and do that for us.”

After helping found the Personal Journal section of The Wall Street Journal and writing a separate money management column, he was hired by The New York Times in 2008 to take over Your Money , a personal finance column. Sixteen years later, he has gained a reputation for offering readers advice — often tinged with his own experience — on headache-inducing issues, like how to navigate the maze of paying for college or prepare for life after a layoff .

“I love introducing readers to characters who they might not think would be the subject of money columns, but who are actually perfectly suited to teach us a thing or three about how the world works,” said Mr. Lieber, whose column appears online and most Saturdays in the Business section.

As a columnist for The Times, he has witnessed two recessions and a pandemic. (In 2009, he even wrote about how his own financial planner had been charged with fraud.) In a recent conversation, he shared the unexpected lessons he had learned in writing the column and the topics he thought might soon dominate the world of personal finance. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

How did you first become interested in finance?

When I was a high school senior in Chicago applying for financial aid for college, I found my way to Roger Koester , who was an associate director of financial aid at Northwestern University. He had an after-hours side gig in his office; in exchange for $45, he’d explain the whole financial aid system to local families who were trying to understand it. He knew exactly what he was talking about and gave me terrific advice.

It was a reminder that there’s always a grown-up somewhere who knows how to beat the system, and if you can just find that grown-up and ask questions, you can help other people beat it, too. I don’t think of myself as the grown-up, but every week, I still feel like I’m searching for the grown-ups who know the answer to whatever thorny consumer question is bedeviling our readers.

What makes for a good column?

When I think about personal finance, there’s a kind of a Venn diagram of possible topics: things that are really expensive; processes that are really complicated; and decisions where emotions can lead us astray if we aren’t careful. I like to think that when I’m at the center of that diagram, I’ve found the right topic.

And then there’s the matter of voice. The best compliment anyone can pay me is to say that my column sounded like I was there in the room with them, explaining the topic at hand. I want it to feel conversational, and not lecture-y, preachy or didactic. That doesn’t mean it’s always friendly — I try my best to punch up at institutions or entities that can take it and deserve it.

If I can find the right topic, and do it in the right voice, I’ve won the week.

Last month, an article by New York magazine’s financial advice columnist on how she was scammed out of $50,000 went viral. Do you think you would’ve fallen for that scam?

Never say never. I’m constantly telling myself that there’s never a reason to rush to do something right now. There’s pretty much always time to call one or three or five people smarter than you or just calmer than you who will ask you levelheaded questions and try to pull you back from the edge of making a big mistake.

What writers and publications do you read to stay on top of your beat?

I read The Wall Street Journal religiously. I’m a big fan of Ramit Sethi, who’s the author of the book “ I Will Teach You to Be Rich ” and a newsletter writer. I love reading Michelle Singletary , who writes the personal finance column for The Washington Post. And I also really like the attitude and the message of Tori Dunlap , who most people know from Instagram and TikTok.

What trends are you watching?

All of the people who’ve been in the work force for their entire career without a traditional pension are starting to retire, and a lot of them are going to run out of money. The question of what’s going to happen when that happens is deeply concerning.

I’m also interested in all of the work that Conor Dougherty and other Times colleagues have been doing around our inability to build more housing in a reasonable fashion. It’s not clear where and how people in their 20s and even 30s are going to buy homes.

Anything else you want to add?

If people are seeing things in the world that don’t make sense — whether they think corruption needs to be exposed, or if they just want to say, “I can’t be the only one who doesn’t understand this thing, could you explain it?” — it’s so helpful for me to know . Some of the work I’m most proud of started with a reader comment on one of my columns. We’re all in this together, and none of us are as smart as all of us.

How corporate PAC money could end up in the personal coffers of Sens. JD Vance and Markwayne Mullin

  • Sen. Ted Cruz single-handedly altered campaign finance rules last year via a Supreme Court case.
  • Federal lawmakers can now pay themselves back for large personal campaign loans after an election.
  • Two freshman GOP senators have been doing just that — while also taking corporate PAC money.

Insider Today

Republican Sens. JD Vance of Ohio and Markwayne Mullin of Indiana have spent the last year-and-change using campaign cash to pay themselves back for hefty loans they sunk into their 2022 Senate bids.

At the same time, they've been taking tens of thousands of dollars in corporate PAC money — some of which may be ending up directly in the senators' bank accounts.

Between the 2022 election and the end of 2023, Vance has used $78,000 in corporate PAC contributions to repay campaign debts, while Mullin has done the same with $45,000 in corporate cash.

Yet it's difficult, if not impossible, to draw a straight line from a single corporate PAC contribution to the checks each senator receives from their campaigns, given the interchangeability of campaign funds. Both men have also been repaying substantial debts to other campaign vendors, and have been accepting donations from other PACs and individuals for the purpose of debt retirement, the sum of which outweighs the corporate PAC money.

The murky reality of both Vance's and Mullin's finances can be attributed in part to the work of Sen. Ted Cruz .

In 2018, the Texas Republican moved to challenge the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act, which prevented federal candidates from raising more than $250,000 after their election to repay any personal loans they had made to their campaign. Anything that remained beyond that limit was deemed a contribution and ineligible to be recouped.

In 2022, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Texas senator in Ted Cruz vs. FEC — a move decried at the time by left-leaning ethics experts and liberal Supreme Court justices as opening the door to corruption.

"Repaying a candidate's loan after he has won election cannot serve the usual purposes of a contribution: the money comes too late to aid in any of his campaign activities," Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan wrote in her dissenting opinion in the case. "All the money does is enrich the candidate personally at a time when he can return the favor—by a vote, a contract, an appointment."

"Thanks to the Cruz decision, lawmakers can now easily lend their campaigns large amounts of money and use corporate PAC contributions to pay themselves back once they're in office," said Jordan Libowitz, communications director for Citizen for Responsibility & Ethics in Washington (CREW). "While disappointing to see it happen yet again, this is the new reality we live in."

Vance defended the arrangement in a brief interview at the Capitol this month, saying he doesn't "think there's anything particularly unusual about the way that we're doing it."

"Look, we put a lot of my personal money into the campaign, and the goal is always to pay it back and put us in a good place for 2028," said Vance. "And that's what we're gonna do."

Related stories

A spokesperson for Mullin did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment on Thursday.

'Totally normal' or a bad incentive structure?

Since that 2022 decision, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has paid himself back $400,000 for years-old loans he made to his 2010 and 2016 campaigns, which he did days before telling Business Insider that he had no intention of doing that .

Cruz, for his part, has no problem with these sorts of loan repayments.

"If he wants to pay himself back, I think that's fantastic," Cruz told Business Insider in May 2023. "It is perfectly reasonable that Ron Johnson, after 10 years of making an interest-free loan to the American people, can pay back his own money."

Vance and Mullin represent two more notable cases of what some left-leaning ethics watchdogs warned about.

Altogether, Vance loaned $1.4 million to his Senate campaign, paying off $700,000 of that before he was elected. He had paid off nearly the entirety of that loan by the end of 2023, along with more than $306,000 in debts to other campaign vendors.

Mullin loaned his campaign $1 million and he has paid himself back $153,000, along with repaying nearly $27,000 in debt to GL Pro, an Oklahoma-based political strategy firm.

The Ohio senator's campaign has earmarked contributions from over 30 corporate PACs — including Comcast, Intel, General Motors, and Walmart — for the explicit purpose of debt retirement. Mullin did the same with 19 corporate PACs, including ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobile, and GlaxoSmithKline.

The optics of accepting the corporate cash may be a sore spot in particular for Vance, who's made criticism of "woke" corporations central to his political brand . He also promised not to take corporate PAC money during the GOP primary, only to reserve that pledge during the general election against Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, who did accept corporate PAC money.

"We decided that hamstringing ourselves in the general election didn't make the same amount of sense," said Vance.

Proponents of the arrangement argue that because campaign cash is fungible, with money from various sources going into one big pot, there's little to no risk of bribery. They also argue that debt repayments aren't all that different from other campaign expenses that politicians may benefit from, such as catering or airfare, and that one could make the same "bribery" argument about any politician who accepts large sums of corporate cash.

"It is a totally normal practice for senators to raise money to repay campaign debt and Business Insider knows that," said a representative for Vance's campaign. "This partisan smear job is even more egregious when you consider that only 6% of Sen. Vance's lifetime political fundraising has come from PACs, a third of the 18% average for successful 2022 Senate campaigns."

But Saurav Ghosh, director of federal campaign finance reform at the Campaign Legal Center, argues that what's important is the incentive structure presented to campaign donors, corporate or otherwise.

"The benefit for the PACs, and even individuals who do this, is that they know at the point when they're putting their money in that it's enriching the candidate," said Ghosh. "The fact that the campaign is sort of the intermediary through which this money is flowing does very little to change that incentive structure."

The judge presiding over Donald Trump's hush money case on Monday scheduled the trial to begin on April 15.

The ruling by Judge Juan Merchan came after the former president 's attorneys had asked for a lengthy delay or for the falsifying business records charges against their client to be dismissed because of evidence that was turned over just this past month by federal prosecutors.

Merchan found Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office “is not at fault for the late production of documents from the U.S. Attorney’s office” and the case could proceed to trial next month.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche then asked the judge again for another delay given the pre-trial publicity surrounding the case. “There’s a lot of news because he’s running for president, which is another reason why he should not have to sit for a trial now,” Blanche said.

Merchan said he'd allow Blanche to file papers stating his case, but also indicated he wasn't going to budge. "See you all on the 15th," he said at the end of the hearing.

Trump attended the hearing, and blasted the new trial date as "election interference" afterward. "This is a case that could have been brought three and a half years ago," he said, calling the trial date "a disgrace." "We'll obviously be appealing," he said.

The former president appeared grim on his way into court as well. “This is a witch hunt. This is a hoax," he said.

Merchan had postponed the trial , originally scheduled to begin Monday, until at least mid-April after federal prosecutors belatedly turned over mounds of evidence related to a key witness in the case, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen.

While hearing arguments from both sides on who was to blame for the late production of evidence, Merchan blasted Trump's team suggesting the DA was responsible for federal prosecutors having not turned over the evidence earlier. “You are literally accusing the Manhattan DA’s office and the people assigned to this case of prosecutorial misconduct” while they had no control over their federal counterparts, the judge said.

He also said Trump's lawyers could have asked for the information earlier.

“It’s odd that we’re even here, and that we’ve taken this time,” Merchan said, before calling a 45-minute recess.

Trump looked angry as he exited the courtroom during a break ahead of Merchan's ruling.

Bragg, who brought the falsifying business records charges against the former president last year, said he supported a 30-day delay in the proceedings in response to Trump’s request for a postponement in order to review documents that federal prosecutors had turned over relating to their prosecution of former longtime Trump lawyer Michael Cohen.

Bragg’s office, however, warned Merchan against delaying the trial further , saying that it should proceed April 15 because fewer than 300 of more than 170,000 documents turned over by federal prosecutors are potentially relevant to Trump’s criminal defense.

The late document production came after Trump's attorneys asked in January for additional documents from the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan. In the hearing, Merchan pressed Trump's lawyers on why they had not alerted him to the issue earlier, including during a hearing last month.

Blanche told the judge that they hadn't thought the judge could do anything about the issue, but apologized for not having raised it sooner.

Trump’s lawyers have pointed fingers at the district attorney's office for failing to obtain the records sooner and asked Merchan to toss out the charges. The DA’s office decried the arguments by Trump’s counsel as a “red herring.”

Merchan tried to press Trump's lawyer to provide a firm number of documents that still need to be reviewed. Blanche pushed back on the DA's position that only 300 documents were relevant and said they're still looking through Cohen's emails, bank records and interview notes. "We got the materials a week ago. We're still going through them," Blanche said, as his client appeared to listen intently.

The judge also pressed the DA's office on the Trump team's claim they had been trying to "suppress" evidence.

”We were not trying to obscure anything,” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo told the judge.

In a sign of the ruling that was to come, the judge said before the break that he and Trump's attorneys appeared to be interpreting things differently. Merchan said Trump's attorneys were characterizing the DA's office as not having done anything in terms of obtaining information while he interpreted what prosecutors have done as going "above and beyond" what the needed to do.

Bragg has alleged that Trump had fraudulently altered business records related to hush money payments that he signed off on. Cohen claimed that Trump directed him to pay $130,000 to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Daniels maintains that she had an affair with Trump in 2006 , following his marriage to Melania Trump.

Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges in the hush money case and continues to deny having a sexual encounter with Daniels. But the former president has acknowledged making repayments to Cohen, who is expected to appear as a key witness in the trial.

Merchan last week denied Trump’s request to bar Cohen and Daniels from testifying in the case. In a court filing last month, Trump’s lawyers argued that Cohen and Daniels shouldn't testify because they are “liars.”

in 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty t o multiple criminal charges, including making secret payments to women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump, making false claims before Congress about the then-president’s business dealings with Russia and failing to report millions of dollars in income.

Monday’s hearing in the hush money case came the same day as a deadline for Trump to pay more than $450 million for bond in the New York civil fraud case against him. He got some good news during the recess, when a state appeals court reduced the size of the bond he needs to post to $175 million and gave him an additional 10 days to post. Trump, speaking to press in the hall, lauded the decision as proof the judge in the case erred in issuing the original judgment.

If he does post the amount, New York Attorney General Letitia James would not be able to begin collecting on the judgment until after the appeal is decided.
