The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge.

Write about the following topic:

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer:

In today’s world, the issue of nuclear technology is a highly controversial and divisive topic. While some argue that the threat of nuclear weapons is necessary to maintain world peace and that nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy, others believe that the disadvantages of nuclear technology far outweigh the benefits. In this essay, I will present my perspective on this issue.

Firstly, it is important to acknowledge the potential catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons. The destructive power of these weapons is unparalleled, and the use of nuclear weapons could lead to unimaginable loss of life and environmental devastation. The threat of nuclear weapons does not necessarily maintain world peace, but rather perpetuates a climate of fear and uncertainty. The possession of nuclear weapons by certain countries can also lead to arms races and tensions between nations, further destabilizing global security.

On the other hand, the argument for nuclear power as a source of cheap and clean energy is compelling. Nuclear power plants do not emit greenhouse gases, making them an attractive option for combating climate change. Additionally, nuclear power has the potential to meet the growing energy demands of a rapidly developing world. However, it is essential to consider the inherent risks associated with nuclear power, such as the possibility of accidents and the long-term storage of radioactive waste. The devastating effects of events like the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters serve as stark reminders of the dangers of nuclear energy.

In conclusion, while there are undeniable benefits to nuclear technology, such as the potential for clean energy production, the risks and dangers associated with nuclear weapons and power cannot be ignored. The threat of nuclear weapons does not guarantee world peace, and the potential for catastrophic accidents in nuclear power plants is a cause for concern. Therefore, I disagree with the statement that the benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. It is imperative that we carefully consider the implications of nuclear technology and work towards finding sustainable and safe alternatives for meeting our energy needs.

Nuclear Power Essay IELTS Sample Answer

Nuclear power is a very debated topic in every convention and has always been questioned for the bad it does rather than its good. In my opinion, nuclear power needs to be used, and the user should also be controlled and hedged with renewable energy sources as they are the only viable solution. Nuclear plants currently provide 11% of the world’s electricity. With an ever-increasing demand for electricity being seen everywhere and the fossil fuels reducing each day, it is now more important than ever that major decisions should be made. In the upcoming decades, energy consumption will only increase and meet the rising demand; nuclear power plants will be required as they are the best source of traditional energy-producing sources. Although nuclear power plants are required, it is also necessary to gradually push renewable energy sources and promote them to create a sustainable future for future generations. Nuclear power plants’ waste disposal and radioactivity are the concerning factors that have been the hot topic of most debates at conventions and meetings. In addition to that, a single misuse of this tremendous power can result in the disruption of life for all mankind. Striking a balance between the two will be crucial in the coming time as global warming and the energy crisis are on a constant rise. If nothing is done in the near time, countries could get submerged underwater within the coming decades, and the entire world will have to fight for survival.

Writing Task 2

The writing section of the IELTS exam consists of two sections. Writing task 2 is an essay writing task that requires deep thinking and coherence. This task will be our focus for this blog, as the rules and guidelines of the IELTS exam can be confusing for students appearing for the first time. Writing task 2 has the subsequent guidelines:

  • The essay should have a minimum of 250 words. An essay written in less than 250 words will be penalised and negatively marked. There is no penalty for writing a longer essay, but it will cause you to stray off-topic and waste time.
  • 40 minutes is a good enough time to complete this task and will leave you with time to recheck your answer.
  • The essay’s contents should be written with perfect grammar and solely focused on the topic.
  • You can be penalised if you stray off-topic while writing your essay. All the sentences must be related and formed to provide a clear view and information.
  • The content must be well structured to fetch the best results and have proper cohesion between the sentences.
  • The tone of your answer must be academic or semi-formal and should discuss the given topic at length and focus on proper and sophisticated language.
  • Using bullet points and notes is not allowed in the IELTS exam . The real answer must be written together and broken into paragraphs to better examine your writing style and structure.

Structure of Essay in Writing Task 2

The structure of the essay in writing task 2 is the base of your essay, and a clear idea of the structure will make it much easier for you to finish the essay on time. The structure of the essay can be broken down in the following way:

  • First Paragraph
  • Second Paragraph
  • Third Paragraph
  • Fourth Paragraph

The first paragraph of your essay should provide a small introduction to the topic and provide an opinion of yours about what side you are on about the topic. The first paragraph should be minimal and to the point. A clear and concise introduction leaves a good impression on the examiner. The second paragraph should begin with your stance on the topic. The first sentence should provide clarity on your stance. The second sentence should build on that idea and delve deeper into the specifics. The next sentences are suitable for providing an example and developing it in detail. You can make up research studies and quote them in your essay to support your point. At the end of the paragraph, end with a statement that sums up the overall idea of the paragraph and supports the idea you started with. The third paragraph is very similar in structure to the second paragraph. The main objective of this paragraph is to provide either the opposite view of the topic or discuss new ideas that touch on a different perspective of the topic but ultimately support your opinion. The structuring is the same as in the second paragraph, with minute changes. The fourth paragraph is the conclusion of your essay and, just like the introduction, should be minimal. Summing up your essay with a statement supporting your opinion and overall idea is best advised.

Nuclear technology is another concern of people as the usage of nuclear power plants leads to deeper research into the nuclear field. In today’s world, anything can be weaponised, and the threat of nuclear weapons is one of the drawbacks of nuclear power. This brings the threat of nuclear war and disruption of world peace. Any attack on nuclear power plants by terrorist organisations can result in a massive explosion that can disrupt and destroy human life and increase radioactivity to alarming levels around the site of the explosion.

5. What is the best way to dispose of nuclear waste?

Ans: Nuclear waste needs to be disposed of properly to prevent radioactive issues in the environment. The best methods to dispose of nuclear waste are as follows: a. Incineration : Radioactive waste can be incinerated in large scale incinerators with low production of waste. b. Deep burial: Nuclear waste can be buried deep into the ground as the radioactivity of nuclear waste wears off over time. This method is used for waste that is highly radioactive and will take a longer time to lose its radioactivity. c. Storage: Nuclear waste with low radioactivity is stored by some countries in storage. This is because their radioactive decay takes lesser time and can be disposed of safely once the radiation wears off.

6. Is it possible to produce electricity without using fossil fuels?

Ans: At the moment, 11% of the world’s electricity is produced by nuclear power plants alone. Replacing fossil fuel-based energy with renewable needs to be done gradually and properly. Renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, and wind will have to be promoted and pushed to create a sustainable future. Renewable energy sources provide cheap energy, do not use up natural resources and fossil fuels and are much cheaper to construct than a nuclear power station.

Band 8 essay sample | Advantages of nuclear energy outweigh disadvantages

by Manjusha Nambiar · November 5, 2016

Essay topic

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The following is an essay submitted by one of our students.

There are many benefits to nuclear energy.  Military powers have used them to end wars and are still using them as a deterrent. Used for civilian reasons, nuclear energy provides electricity with no negative impact on the environment. Some people, therefore, believe that the advantages of nuclear power outweigh the disadvantages. However, in my opinion, these are all misconceptions and I don’t support nuclear power.

Used as a weapon it has the most destructive power. The effects of radiation have consequences for years to come. The genetic material of human beings and of plants could be damaged from exposure to radiation. Restoring peace and rebuilding the country after a nuclear attack can be even more difficult. The radiation can even affect people living in neighbouring countries.  Today, nuclear weapons could fall in the hands of the so called rogue states or terrorist groups. If used for terrorist purposes the consequences could be quite disastrous.

As a source of energy for civilian reasons nuclear power seems very attractive, but it is also very dangerous. Accidents in nuclear power plants have happened before in Chernobyl and more recently in Fukushima. Both accidents went totally out of control and destroyed the surrounding zones. In addition to the risk of accidents, there is the problem of nuclear waste. It will keep producing radiation for centuries and today we have no satisfying solution for the transport and the storage of nuclear waste.

For the above stated reasons, I believe, that even if nuclear power has enormous benefits, the dangers inherent to this technologies are so significant that they outweigh all possible benefits.

The Threat of Nuclear Weapons Maintains World Peace: Writing Task 2

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample 1 The Threat of Nuclear Weapons Maintains World Peace

It has been argued that addressing the nations about the usage of nuclear weapons assists a lot in creating harmony in the world. Although using nuclear energy does not create pollution and is inexpensive in nature, its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. I agree with it and the going to explain it in further paragraphs.

First off, the usage of nuclear weapons is the only way to create harmony in the whole world. To elaborate, when a nation threatens any other nations about their plan to destroy them by using it. The weak nations oppose the decision made by the affluent nations. The only option left is to reconcile with the powerful country. Therefore, world peace is established as the nations are aware of the repercussion of this action. To exemplify it, the whole globe witnessed the destruction of humanity after World War First and World War II. Even after so many years, some pieces of land could not be turned into fertile land. So the threat to use explosive energy sources is beneficial to create world peace.

Furthermore, the use of nuclear energy improves the quality of life in many more ways than people realise. It uses radioactive materials, which have a variety of important uses in electricity generation, medicine, industry, agriculture, and our homes. An inexpensive and clean source is better than using other alternative sources such as Petrol and diesel, which have more carbon emissions. Only one disadvantage cannot be proven. It has more demerits as it is difficult to establish a nuclear plant because of any leakage, which can have devastating effects on this planet. However, its advantages cannot be ignored.

To conclude, it is apparent that the threat to use toxic weapons, which have the power to ruin the whole world, can create peace in the world and bring it a cheaper source of energy as well as create less pollution as compared with other conventional fuels, makes it more useful than harmful.

Sample 2 The Threat of Nuclear Weapons Maintains World Peace

The debate on the use of nuclear power has persisted for many years. Although it has numerous advantages attached to it, we simply cannot write off its disadvantages. I strongly agree that the benefits it carries are huge than its drawbacks which will be discussed in this essay.

The arguments that the people table against nuclear weapons are mostly based on the threat it present to the world. These powerful weapons can wipe off an entire city in minutes if they are destructive hands. The most accurate example would be the two cities of Japan, namely Hiroshima and Nagasaki, destroyed during the second world war. Moreover, these power plants may collapse if prone to natural disasters like earthquakes and Tsunamis. It eventually not only leads to the death of thousands of people by their radio hazards, but it might also leave negative impacts on future generations.

Nevertheless, the merits that nuclear weapons bring are crucial to the world. The fact is that the world cannot be entirely dependent on intermittent power sources like wind and solar. Having said that. The primary advantages that nuclear technology possesses include zero carbon emission, reliability and healthier. It is the cheapest source of energy which serves clean power needs. A single nuclear power plant can provide the energy required to run a whole city.

It is more reliable as it provides constant baseload power. It is worth mentioning here that it is way healthier when we compare it with its alternatives, coal and natural gas.

Therefore, I would like to conclude that despite some demerits of nuclear weapons and power, their advantages are enumerable. They should, however, be used with safety and precautions.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Exercise

I recently gave the question below to a group of students, most of whom made at least one major mistake that lowered their overall mark.

I thought it would be a good exercise to discuss and analyse this question to help you with future questions and raise your awareness about what examiners expect in the real test.

Please do the three exercises below without looking at the sample question and then watch the video below.

Exercise 1- Question Analysis

Look at the question below and simply think about how you might answer it. Think about what the examiner wants you to do. This should take you around 1-2 minutes.

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Exercise 2- Ideas

Look at the question again and think about relevant main ideas that you could use in your article. These will be your main points. Again this should only take you 1-2 minutes.

Exercise 3- Structure

Try to fit your ideas into the general structure below.

Paragraph 1- Introduction

Paragraph 2- Main Body 1

Paragraph 3- Main Body 2

Paragraph 4- Conclusion

Common Mistakes

After doing these three exercises, most people have already made at least one crucial mistake that lowers their mark. Below is a video highlighting the key mistakes people make in this question.

nuclear weapons ielts writing essay

Sample Answer

It is often argued that nuclear arsenals keep the world safe and that nuclear energy is an inexpensive and environmentally friendly power source. This essay totally disagrees that these benefits outweigh the drawbacks because the downsides are the eradication of mankind and the destruction of the planet.

Believing that major powers having nuclear warheads pointed at one another is a good thing because it ensures superpowers will not go to war is foolish. This is because it only takes one mistake or a rogue commander to trigger a nuclear conflict, and this is a conflict most of us would not survive. For example, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the United States and the USSR came extremely close to launching their missiles. This demonstrates that they are not the ultimate deterrent and nuclear war is possible.

The idea that nuclear fission is a clean energy source has been dispelled by numerous high-profile accidents at nuclear power plants. These disasters show just how harmful and long-lasting a nuclear material leak can be, and the contamination is not worth it when other energy sources are available. For example, the Fukushima disaster has polluted huge parts of the Pacific Ocean, and it has been reported that fish as far away as California have dangerous radiation levels. To make matters worse, solar and wind energy could replace nuclear energy tomorrow if there was the political will to do so.

In conclusion, this essay disagrees with the opinion that nuclear technology is beneficial rather than dangerous because the consequences of using nuclear energy in the wrong way are so catastrophic to both our species and the Earth itself.

Nukes in space or nothing new? The science behind the intel frenzy over a Russian weapon

Russia’s apparent pursuit of a nuclear space-based weapon has stirred a frenzy in Washington — and raised a flurry of questions among a world of scientists and experts.

With scant details released from the congressional briefings, it’s unclear exactly what sort of weapon the Kremlin may be pursuing, and just how bad it would be for the West if President Vladimir Putin does deploy one.

This could be an alarming escalation of hostilities reminiscent of the tensest days of the Cold War, or a less significant development whose revelation may stem from more mundane domestic concerns than the possibility of nuclear war in space.

“We know very little, and the comments so far have been very, very cryptic,” said Bleddyn Bowen, an associate professor at England’s University of Leicester and author of “Original Sin: Power, Technology and War in Outer Space.”

Three sources familiar with the matter told NBC News that Russia is developing a nuclear space-based weapon designed to target American satellites. This weapon is not yet operational, the sources said, but the intelligence was enough to prompt Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, to ask the White House to declassify information about an unnamed “serious national security threat.”

Russia Space Satellites

The main known unknown, publicly at least, is whether this is a space-based nuclear weapon in the most conventional sense of the term — nuclear warheads, atomic reactions, mushroom clouds. Or if, as many experts suspect, this is a nuclear-powered satellite carrying electronic weapons, which could cause havoc on Earth by crippling satellites that drive everything from weather forecasting and phone calls to wars and the global economy.

If it is the former — actual space nukes — that would be a violation of the United Nations’ Outer Space Treaty of 1967. One of its clauses says that countries are not allowed to “place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit, or on celestial bodies, or station them in outer space in any other manner.”

One of the reasons this treaty was signed is the same reason that stationing nuclear weapons in orbit would be so dangerous: a country could loose a nuclear bomb from the heavens with very little warning. The sources said the Russian technology in question is designed to target American satellites, something experts say Russia — and other nuclear-armed powers — is more than capable of doing using intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, launched from the ground.

Nevertheless, actually deploying nuclear weapons in orbit “would be a new escalatory step by the Russian Federation, which has already trashed a lot of arms control treaties,” said Mariana Budjeryn, a senior research associate at the Project on Managing the Atom, part of the Harvard Kennedy School. “This would be putting a nuclear weapon in space — where there have been none before.”

Other experts, reading between the lines of the reports, believe that this weapons system would be nuclear-powered rather than nuclear-armed. There has also been speculation that this is all linked to a classified Russian satellite, named Cosmos 2575, launched last week.

Russian Satellite Launch

All this said, little if any of these technologies or concepts are new.

Both the U.S. and Soviet Union developed and tested anti-satellite weapons, or ASATs, during the Cold War. And both have regularly used nuclear power in space.

As early as 1959, the U.S. began developing anti-satellite missiles, fearful the Soviets might be about to do the same. This culminated in its 1985 test launch by an F-15 fighter jet, releasing a payload at around 38,000 feet that whooshed into orbit and destroyed a degrading U.S. satellite, according to the U.S. Air Force museum.

Between 1969 and 1975, Washington was able to “cobble together” an anti-satellite system that used existing nuclear missiles in “direct ascent” mode to destroy targets in space, according to a paper published in 2000 by the Air Force’s Air University Press.

In terms of nuclear power rather than nuclear arms, Washington likewise first put a nuclear-powered satellite in orbit in 1961. The Soviets developed and deployed similar technology, which powered many of its satellites during that period.

This is far from without risks, as history has shown.

In 1978, a Soviet nuclear-powered satellite malfunctioned, fell out of the sky, and as it burned up, showered northern Canada with radioactive debris.

What doesn’t appear to have been developed yet, or publicly revealed at least, is something that does all these things at once: a Russian, nuclear-powered satellite carrying a weapon.

If the U.S. has “intelligence that is not about development, but the actual plans to deploy, then, yes, it is a new development,” Budjeryn said.

A nuclear-fueled satellite might be able to carry a high-powered jammer that could block out a wide array of communications and other signals for prolonged periods of time, according to a 2019 technical essay in The Space Review, an online publication widely shared among experts following this week’s news.

Bowen, at the University of Leicester, said such a design would be “really expensive” and “just waiting for a problem to go wrong to then have a nuclear environmental disaster in orbit.”

Ultimately, he and Budjeryn said that none of this technology is new, though its actual implementation would no doubt be viewed as an escalation.

“It’s quite bizarre to me that this is now making such waves,” he said, noting that Russia has been capable of deploying this technology “for a very, very long time.” He added, “You would rather not see more nuclear materials in orbit, but if they do it, on the security front it’s not that big a deal.”

He and others have questioned whether the release of the information may be more about politics than military threat.

“Congresspeople do these things for different reasons,” he said. “Is it about trying to get more information out of the Pentagon, or trying to get Russia in the news? I don’t know.”

That’s certainly the view from Moscow.

“It is obvious that the White House is trying, by hook or by crook, to push Congress to vote on the bill to allocate money,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in an apparent reference to the push for new aid for Ukraine, of which Turner is a prominent advocate. “We’ll see what tricks the White House will resort to.”

Others have suggested that this could be a diversion from the other side.

“Russia has tried to develop weapons in space for a long time,” Francesca Giovannini, executive director of the Project on Managing the Atom at the Harvard Kennedy School, said in an email. “We don’t actually know whether this is just a disinformation campaign to force the U.S. to divert precious resources from other capabilities (which are way more important and consequential).”

CORRECTION (Feb. 15, 2024, 11:41 a.m. ET): A previous version of this article misstated the height at which an anti-satellite missile was released during a test launch in 1985. It was around 38,000 feet, not at 36,000 feet.
