Your curiosity has companionship: according to a UK study, 57 percent of people support adopting a four day work week (and a three day weekend); in another survey, 69 percent of millionaires like the idea.

With numbers like that, one of the also-ran presidential candidates should add three-day weekends to their platform. Indeed, there are many compelling reasons to contract the work week and lengthen the weekend. Here are but three:

1. Productivity : Just because you work long hours doesn't mean you are productive. According to a study published by The Economist, there was a negative correlation between productivity and hours worked. For example, Germans clocked in an average of 1,400 hours per year, but were 70 percent more productive than Greeks, who worked 2,000 hours.

Many employers have recognized that overworked employees make mistakes, so they offered more flexible schedules to boost productivity. For example, Ctrip (CTRP), a China based travel booking firm, found that its employees that worked from home demonstrated a 13 percent increase in productivity. The founder of 37Signals, a software company that has implemented four day work weeks from May to October, observes, "When there's less time to work, you waste less time."

2. Health and happiness : Working long hours can be hazardous to your health. In Japan, approximately 400 people die each year from work-induced strokes, heart attacks, or suicides. They have a term for this phenomenon: karoshi. Even long hours sitting at your desk are harmful. One study found that many of us are seated for 12 hours every day. While you're seated, you burn about 50 calories fewer per hour than if you were standing. Sitting increases your chances of heart disease, muscle degeneration, back pain, and colon cancer. Of course, you could use a use a stand-up desk.

But if you want be happier, then you'll need a three day weekend. Four day work weeks would yield 52 additional days for people to spend as they please. These extra days would likely lead to more happiness. According to Gallup, Americans are happiest on weekends and holidays: in 2014, 68 percent of people said they experienced happiness on Thanksgiving and 67 percent on Independence Day, the two most jovial days of the year. Not only will you be more time-rich, you might save money: spending less on day care and gasoline for the commute to work (which would ease traffic and help the environment).

3. Precedent : Employers and even school districts have embraced the four day work week. The Society for Human Resource Management reports that 43 percent of firms already offer some of their employees the option of a four day work week, but only 5 percent of large companies extend the perk to its entire workforce.

Of course, three day weekends might also contract output and result in less income for Americans. But as we enjoy Labor Day —a holiday that we've celebrated since 1894 to honor the American worker—maybe more will see the light of perpetual three day weekends, after all.

Almost everyone enjoys a bank holiday. A three-day weekend means more time to spend with family and friends, to go out and explore the world, and to relax from the pressures of working life. Imagine if, rather than a few times a year, we had a three-day weekend every week. This isn’t just a nice idea. Beyond the possibilities for leisure, three-day weekends might also be one of the easiest steps we could take to radically reduce our environmental impact – and future-proof our economy.

A reduction in working hours generally correlates with marked reductions in energy consumption, as economists David Rosnick and Mark Weisbrot have argued . In fact, if Americans simply followed European levels of working hours, for example, they would see an estimated 20% reduction in energy use – and hence in carbon emissions.

With a four-day week, huge amounts of commuting to and from work could be avoided, as well as the energy outputs from running workplaces. At a point when we need to massively cut back our carbon outputs, instituting a three-day weekend could be the simplest and most elegant way to make our economy more environmentally friendly .

It’s happened before. For example, in 2007 the US state of Utah redefined the working week for state employees, with extended hours on Monday to Thursday meaning it could eliminate Fridays entirely. In its first ten months, the move saved the state at least US$1.8m (£1.36m) in energy costs. Fewer working days meant less office lighting, less air conditioning and less time spent running computers and other equipment – all without even reducing the total number of hours worked.

For one day a week, thousands of commuters were able to stay at home. If the reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions from travel were included, the state estimated a saving of more than 12,000 tons of CO 2 each year.

Utah abandoned the experiment in 2011 after residents complained they were unable to access services on Fridays. It seems this sort of change has to be accompanied by a shift in our expectations so that Friday becomes a “third weekend” rather than simply a weekday without work. What Utah does show is that, replicated across an entire country, a four day week would see substantial progress towards an economy that does less damage to the environment.

Yet there would be other benefits too. Working less would improve the elusive “work/life balance”, and help to restore our mental health and physical well-being. It would also give us more time to spend on social activities, to care for children and the elderly, and to engage with our communities. Experiments with reduced working hours at select workplaces in Sweden in 2015 reduced sickness and even increased productivity.

Directing gains in economic efficiency towards increased free time and reduced energy consumption, rather than making more stuff, could create a better and more environmentally safe world.

An obvious objection might be: “How could we afford this?” But there are serious economic and technological reasons for why governments, political parties, think tanks and social movements should all start to think about advocating for the implementation of three-day weekends.

As anthropologist David Graeber has recently contended , many of us work jobs that, at least partially, seem pointless. Indeed, economists have long been aware of the redundant hours contained in many working days, with employees effectively under-utilised in their workplaces, yet unable to leave due to the persistent issue of “ presenteeism ” – where workers are valued by managers for hours logged in the office rather than productivity. Rather than work longer hours for little productive benefit, we could embrace a shorter working week and help save our planet and our own well-being.

Looking more into the long-term, a new wave of workplace automation featuring advanced robotics and machine learning systems is predicted to replace 47% of current jobs in the US in coming decades, and 54% in Europe . In these circumstances, where there will be significantly less work available, instituting policies such as three-day weekends becomes essential to make life liveable under these changed economic conditions.

As Nick Srnicek and I have argued in our book Inventing the Future , automation will soon offer us the prospect of a very different world of work. More automation would make many production processes more efficient, using less energy and less human labour until, eventually, we are largely freed from work.

The key to capturing the benefits of automation without drastic social dislocation depends in part on developing policies which work to share the gains. This means a reduced working week thanks to an extended weekend, together with a universal basic income .

None of this will happen overnight. But, if you’re in the UK and are lucky enough to have Monday off, don’t forget that extra day at home or in the park is not only fun but will help fight climate change.

A persuasive paragraph can be a standalone assignment, or you might need to write several persuasive paragraphs as part of an essay. The basic format of a persuasive paragraph is the same either way, but there are some additional considerations if you need to write the paragraph as part of a larger essay. Start by planning out the content of the paragraph, then draft the paragraph and include additional details if needed.

Getting Your Main Point Across

  • For instance, topics like "should students be allowed to wear hats in schools," "is social media a bad influence on teens," and "is recycling the best way to help the environment" are all debatable topics that have more than 1 opposing side.

Step 2 Take a stance on the topic so you can persuade your reader.

  • For example, if you need to write a paragraph about what you think is the best holiday, then make a list of your favorites to help you decide.
  • If the paragraph will be part of a larger essay, then identify 1 of the points you want to make with the paragraph. This point should support your essay's overall argument.

Step 3 Support your stance with evidence.

  • For example, if you want to argue that Halloween is the best holiday of the year, then you might include reasons like getting to wear a costume, trick-or-treating, and eating candy.
  • If the paragraph is part of a larger essay, then make a list of the reasons that support your topic sentence. For example, if the essay is about the importance of recycling, then your reasons might include reducing waste, saving energy, and conserving resources.

Supporting Your Main Point

Step 1 Include examples that strengthen the paragraph.

  • For example, if you are arguing that Halloween is the best holiday, then you might cite candy sales statistics as good for the economy. You could also do a survey of your classmates to see how Halloween stacks up against other holidays in their opinions.
  • If you are including a persuasive paragraph as part of a larger essay, then you may want to visit your school’s library to conduct your research. Talk to the librarian if you need help navigating the library’s resources.

  • For example, if you are writing about the beneficial properties of green tea, then you might open with a brief summary of how consuming green tea can help people. Then, you could conclude your essay by briefly recapping the main benefits of green tea.

3 Types of Persuasive Writing

The three major types of persuasive writing are ethos, pathos, and logos. In my opinion, the best persuasive writing includes all three.

Here are definitions and examples of all three types.

Ethos is the writer’s character or credibility.

In order to be persuasive, a writer must establish trust with the reader. One way to do this is by being transparent and honest about who you are and your credentials.

You can also build ethos by using credible sources, such as statistics, case studies, and expert opinions.

An example of ethos in persuasive writing is:

“As a lifelong resident of this community, I know the importance of keeping our streets clean. I urge you to vote in favor of the cleanup proposal.”

Pathos is the emotional appeal to the reader.

The persuasive writer must connect with the reader on an emotional level in order to convince others to agree with them.

You can use word choice, stories, and “emotional” language to trigger a guttural feeling response in readers.

Here is an example of pathos in persuasive writing:

“Please fix this streetlight. It’s been broken for weeks and it’s very unsafe. Our children play in this neighborhood and I’m worried about their safety.”

Logos is the logical appeal to the reader.

The persuasive writer must make a rational argument in order to be persuasive. You can use facts, statistics, and expert opinions to make your argument.
