Photographs are an interesting topic to discuss as they are an indispensable part of our lives. They help us to relive our memories time and again with our favourite people in our best of times. The modes of photographs might have changed and several divisions might have come up, but its essence has not changed at all. But, in IELTS Speaking, you have to be careful with words as it is a formal setting and prepare yourself for it.

Speaking Part 1

1 do you like taking photographs.

Why yes of course. They are a way to capture a moment in time. Moreover, I like to be able to show them to people so they can imagine that they were there with me. As I’m a big traveler, photos are my way of sharing my experiences without words.

2 How often do you take photos?

I would say everyday. I’m a big fan of selfies, so I often snap a few of them to send to my boyfriend every morning before work. Moreover, I take hundreds of photos when I travel.

3 I which situation do you like take photos?

Any situation! But especially when I see something out of the ordinary . For example, I like to take photos when the light is setting just right on my street, or when I catch a glimpse (a look) of two children holding hands.

4 Do you prefer to take pictures of people or of scenery?

Definitely people. I like to capture the raw (real; candid) emotions on their faces. I feel that photos of people can be quite powerful. Moreover, I feel that scenery photography never does the actual place any justice .

5 Do you prefer to take photographs yourself or to have other people take photos?

Definitely myself. As I’m quite picky about the photos that I take and post, I take this responsibility upon myself. Call me a snob (a person who feels superior to others) , but I feel that most people don’t have any idea of what makes a good photo and end up taking unflattering photos of me.

6 How do you keep your photos?

On my iCloud! I’m really grateful for this type of technology that keeps this record of my photos for me. Moreover, I post my photos on social media, such as Facebook and Instagram, so that also keeps them secure.

7 Do you keep your photographs on your computer?

Absolutely! It’s a must nowadays. Now it’s nearly impossible to lose your photos and memories thanks to iCloud.

8  Are there any photos on the walls of your house?

In my own personal apartment, no, as I haven’t bothered to decorate much. On the other hand, my bedroom at my parents’ home is full of collages of my friends, family, and I over the years.

9 Do you frame (or have you framed) any of your photos?

Many times! Although not too often anymore, as social media is taking over. However, I’ve often framed photos to give to my boyfriend or family members as gifts for their special occasions.

10 Do you prefer to send postcards to people or to send photos that you took yourself? (Why?)

My own photography, as I feel quite confident with my skill. Furthermore, I feel that my own photos are much more personal. Although some post cards are beautiful, I don’t feel that they hold a candle (compare) to my own.

Students questions about photographs

Keith, what kind of photos do you prefer to take?

Well, I am a bit of an amateur photographer and I really do like taking different kinds of photos, but if I had to pick one kind, I think it would be different scenic views. Right?

Landscapes, I particularly like landscapes because I live near the countryside.

I am surrounded by nature.

So, I love to get out into the countryside and to snap some mountains or rivers, something natural.

That’s the kind of photo I prefer taking.

Keith, how often do you take photos?

To be honest , I think I take photos most days.

It’s so easy nowadays just to take out, to whip out  your phone and to snap anything you see around you,

whether it’s food in a restaurant or a spontaneous moment when you walking down the street, and, I love to capture those moments.

I always have my phone with me so, to be honest, yes, I am taking photos most days.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Taking Photos

05/03/2022 12:05 PM

General Rules:

photography speaking topic

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer., talk about yourself. this part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person)..

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

Sentence starters and linking words, idioms or special phrases, do you like taking photos.

My Personal Answer:

Do you like taking selfies?

Yes, I do from time to time . I don’t look my best every day, however at times, when I prepare very well for going out , or when I dress up , I’ll take a few selfies to remember the time I looked well . I’ll even post some of my selfies online , and receive some likes from my friends, which encourages me to take even more selfies. It's funny.

Very rarely, if ever . I avoid taking selfies , as I avoid taking photos in general. Selfies are even worse, as I don’t find myself so attractive to take photos of my face. I’m definitely not ugly or something, but for me, personally , I don’t have a fascination with my appearance . That’s too narcissistic i n my opinion , and I avoid doing that.

What is your favorite family photo?

I have one of my family at a restaurant. I believe that was my grandfather’s birthday and so we went to eat outside. In the photo, you can see all of us together, as we asked a waiter to take the shot . Everybody was laughing or smiling together, and that made for a great photo. I believe I have it somewhere on my mobile phone, and every now and then I look at it and remember the good times .

I don’t really have a special feeling about any photos, as these days we take millions of them. I remember one photo clearly though , and that is a weird photo that was taken at my sister’s graduation party , which we organized for her. It's just a photo of my father mother and sister staying together, all dressed up . My sister looked really gorgeous , but, I looked stupid and uncomfortable . I believe that’s why I have a memory of the photo, as I look really awkward in it.

Do you want to improve your photography skills?

I’m already doing a great job at taking photos, but there is always room for improvement . I could t ake a free online course , as there are many these days teaching the basics or even advanced strategies of taking photos or videos. These skills are important and could be useful for work, so I could do that If I have time.

I guess I need to, and eventually , at some point , I might . At the moment I’m too busy to take a course or learn from somebody, but in the next few years , I might consider taking my photography skill to the next level . In fact, I’m more interested in video making and video editing at the moment, so I could take a quick course online , at some point in time.

Do you take many photos while traveling?

Yes, of course. It's always a great idea to t ake a few snaps of nature, the landscape , the sightseeing , the wonderful landmarks , and monuments , or even some interesting and colorful people. The best photographs are the pictures I take while traveling, especially abroad . There are so many wonders to discover , that I can't wait to get started again.

What kinds of photos do you like to take?

I think I mentioned it before, but I enjoy taking all sorts of pictures. For instance, I'll try to capture amazing sightseeing locations at special times. It could be at sunset when the sky becomes red or pink . This background inspires me to shoot many pictures of the sky. Other times it is definitely food. Food pictures look so good, that I can't resist showing my meals to others.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Photography: Learn how to answer questions about taking pictures or photographs in IELTS Speaking.

Below are the sample answers on how to express your ideas when talking about photography. Study how the speaker composed his answers and practice so you can achieve a band 7.0+.

PHOTOGRAPHY/PHOTOS

Do you like taking photos?

(Answer 1)

Yes, I do. I enjoy taking photos of nature such as animals, landscapes, beaches, and the like. In fact, I can’t travel without taking with me my mirror-less camera. My camera is my companion whenever I travel somewhere as it helps me document (to record) my trip through photos.

(Answer 2)

Of course! Who doesn’t love to? I think every one of us enjoys capturing moments from time to time with our camera. Well, most especially these days when we all have smartphones. Our smartphones can take photos very instantly whenever and wherever we are. In fact, I have numerous (very many) photos of my travels stored on my smartphone.

Do you like taking selfies?

No way! I find it awkward to take selfies, especially in public. I feel like I’m so vain if I do it in public spaces. So, if I want to take photos of myself with beautiful scenery as the background, I always ask someone to take a picture of me.

Yes, I do and I think that’s pretty normal these days. In the past, I was awkward or I felt so embarrassed when I took a picture of myself with my smartphone because I felt like people are looking at me. But I realized later on that people don’t really care so that’s when I started to gain confidence in taking selfies.

What is your favorite family photo?

Unfortunately, I don’t have one. I don’t have a family photo since I’m living away from my family. Also, I can’t recall (remember) if we have a family photo at home, as far as I can remember, we don’t have one. I don’t see one in the photo albums that we have at home. I think my parents didn’t care about taking photographs back then.

Oh, let me recall our family photos…I believe the photo of our Disneyland trip. That was memorable since it was our first family trip abroad. Our family picture was taken in front of one of the castles in Disneyland with Princess Belle standing next to me.

Do you want to improve your photography skills?

Yes, I really want to because my photos aren’t the best yet. I still have so much to learn about portrait photography and architectural photography. I know it’ll take time but I’m patient enough to develop my photography skills.

Yes, absolutely. My way of taking pictures is extremely basic. I want to learn some techniques on how to take photos like a pro. Actually, there are various online courses about photography that I’m already eyeing (contemplating; considering) , it’s just that time doesn’t permit it since I’ve been so busy with my work.

Do you like taking pictures?

Yes definitely! Photography is my first love, I can’t imagine my life without taking pictures. In fact, I’ve invested in high-quality cameras such as compact digital cameras with viewfinders because I want to capture perfect shots.

Well, who doesn’t want to? Of course, I do! I enjoy taking photos of landscapes with buildings, people, animals, trees, and more. Taking photos is my ultimate stress reliever.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Definitely [adv.] – without any doubt

First love [expression] – a thing, a place, or an activity of which one is fondest

Invest [verb] – (based on the answer)   to use more money in order to get a better camera

Compact digital camera [noun] – or Compact system camera; it’s a point-and-shoot camera

Viewfinder [noun] – a device on a camera in which it shows the field of view  of the lens; used for framing and focusing the photo

Capture [verb] – (based on the answer) to record images

Landscape [noun] – scenery; terrain; environment

Ultimate [adj.] – (based on the answer) the only way to relieve stress

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker gave a positive answer and described what photography was in his life. That’s a very good way to make his answer a bit longer. Also he used some topic vocabulary words (compact digital camera; viewfinder; capture; shots)  in order to get a better mark on the criterion, Lexical Resource. Make sure to add topic vocabulary words in your answer.

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker answered in a creative way by asking a question instead, then he transitioned to giving a positive answer and talked about what kinds of photos he enjoyed taking. Then he ended his answer by giving a conclusive statement to make his answer concrete.

When do you take photos?

Well every time I travel, I make a habit to take lots of photos in order for me to keep great memories. Also, I enjoy taking photos of people, especially my loved ones during important events such as birthdays, weddings, graduation, and family reunions.

Well, most of the time I take photos when I come across some places with magnificent scenery. I’m a person who loves to be close to nature so it’s expected that my camera is always ready whenever I go hiking. As you know, nature never ceases to amaze us so a camera in my pocket always comes in handy.

Make a habit [expression] – to begin to do something regularly

Loved ones [noun] – people you love usually members of the family

Come across [phrasal verb] – meet or find by chance

Magnificent [adj.] – striking; very beautiful

Cease [verb] – stop

Amaze [verb] – surprise greatly

Come in handy [phrase] – turn out to be useful

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker focused his answer on talking about spending his time with nature. He gave the examiner an idea of his personality, which was the reason why he took photos during the time when he was close to nature. The way he ended his answer sounds so natural! A great way to wrap up his answer.

Which do you use when taking photos, a camera or a phone?

I usually use the latter because it’s convenient and user-friendly. I don’t need special skills to understand the technicalities when taking photos. I just simply tap the camera application on the phone and click the button to start taking pictures. And that’s a no-brainer!

Well, I always go for a camera, either a digital camera or DSLR because the quality of photos taken by those is incredibly superb. Also, I’m tech-savvy, I enjoy tweaking the functions of the camera that can make my photos look jaw-dropping. I know some smartphone cameras are good but for me, they can’t beat the quality of compact cameras or DSLRs.

Latter [adj.] – later; the second choice (based on the choices)

Tap [verb] – press

No-brainer [noun] – something that requires little effort

Superb [adj.] – excellent

Tech-savvy [adj.] – proficient in the use of modern technology

Tweak [verb] – adjust; modify

Beat [verb] – defeat

Jaw-dropping[adj.] – amazing

Compact camera [noun] – point and shoot camera

DSLR [noun] – digital single-lens reflex;  a camera that combines the optics and mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker started his answer by using a very good expression ‘the latter’ (the opposite is ‘the former’), this is very useful when you are given two choices. Use this kind of expression instead of mentioning the given choice. It does help you improve your mark in Lexical Resource. He talked about the reason why he liked using phones when taking pictures clearly and ended his answer with a great expression as well.

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker chose a camera over phones and explained his reason. He’s able to use some very good topic vocabulary words in his answer that helped him explain his answer in a more spontaneous way. Topic vocabulary words plus collocations can surely help you get a better mark under Lexical Resource, just make sure you really how to use the words or expressions.

Do you want to take professional lessons in photography?

Well, I don’t need it. Nowadays, almost everything can be learned through the internet. There are plenty of tutorial websites or videos on Youtube teaching people how to use compact cameras or DSLRs the right way. Thanks to the advent of the internet, people do not need to spend money just to acquire knowledge in photography.

Yes, I have a plan to take the course professional photography because I want to know the techniques in photography. I want to understand how to use my camera well in order for me to capture perfect shots. I’m also interested to know the techniques in black and white photography, macro photography, kinetic photography, and many more.

(The) advent (of) [noun] – an invention being made

Macro photography [noun] – photography producing photographs of small items larger than life-size

Kinetic photography [noun] – an experimental photographic technique in which a photographer uses movement resulting from physics to create an image

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker gave a direct negative answer and explained how he needed not to learn professionally. He presented a very realistic argument saying everything could be learnt on the internet. He could teach himself without enrolling in a certain course of photography. Realistic answer and spontaneous!

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker gave a positive answer and explained his reason as to why he wanted to study photography professionally. Also, he provided some topic vocabulary words of photography. That surely helps him get a good mark in Lexical Resource and at the same time helps him give a good impression to the examiner as he really knows what he’s talking about.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Photography

Topic: photography.

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking photographs?

Answer:  The primary advantage of taking photographs is that it helps us preserve the memories of both of our good times and “not-so” good times. By taking photographs, we can also establish a truth, especially, in situations where people are “maligned” unfairly. Besides, when choosing it as a “hobby”, we can always enjoy having a good time with our cameras by taking pictures of different “good” things randomly that we really like. Among the disadvantages, sometimes, you might get so obsessed with photography that you forget to live and enjoy your life in the present moment. Besides, depending on the photographs in order to get the whole picture about a person or a situation can be misleading at times.

2. How has modern technology changed the way we take photographs?

Answer:  Technology, especially in the form of digital photography, has made taking photographs way more easy today than at any other time in the history of photography.  With the digital camera, today we have more opportunities to take the photo from any location, distance and angle, take as many photos as we want, view them instantly, process it and then share it more quickly and efficiently than ever before. Besides, because of technology, messy and unnecessary paper prints are becoming more and more obsolete as there are many other ways to view photographs today.

3. How has sharing photographs changed since your grandparents’ time?

Answer:  Photographs sharing have changed very significantly since our grandparents’ time for better, of course. Back in our grandparents’ time, we used to rely either on postal mails and other forms of “human courier” which would take days and weeks to share the photographs, sometimes damaged because of bad weather, with our families and loves ones. But, today, we can share our pictures “intact” with anybody in the world in the blink of an eye, courtesy to the internet and computer technology. Besides, unlike during our grandparents’ time, we save our photographs on computers and “cloud servers”, for sharing purposes instead of a paper-based, and physical photo albums.

4. How well do photographs capture special moments?

Answer:  How well photographs capture special moments entirely depends on the skill level of the photographers as well as the “environment” in which the photographs are being taken. However, with the digital technologies, we have today, as well as with the many advanced university photography courses, it is fair to assume that photographs manage to capture special moments rather nicely. And, its proofs can be found in many “extra-ordinary” photographs that we see today in our daily life on different print media and picture galleries. People who are on the photo or had been present in an event where the photographs were taken can get back to the memory lane and cherish the moment once more.

5. Do you think that people nowadays spend too much time taking photographs? Why?

Answer:  If you are asking about the ‘social media’ generation, who are using Facebook, Twitter and Instagrams pretty much 24/7, then the answer is that they do spend a lot of time in taking photographs of virtually anything and everything in order to share them with their friends and families on the internet. But, outside of this social media generation who are glued to the internet 24/7, I don’t really see that many people are spending much time in taking photographs unless, of course, there is a very valid reason to do so.

6. Why do you think people photograph themselves?

Answer:  Well, people choose to photograph themselves for several reasons. First, they probably can’t really rely on the “skills” of other people as they believe in their own skills. Secondly, taking photographs of one’s own has become really, really easy with smartphones and other advanced digital cameras and “selfie” is a modern craze popular among the young generation. Finally, some people photograph themselves because they don’t have any other people or expert photographers around them to take their pictures at some special moments.

Do You Like Photography? IELTS Speaking (10 Example Answers)

The topic of photography might come up in part one of your IELTS Speaking test. In this case, you could be asked, ‘Do you like photography?’

Here are some tips on how to answer this question really well, including 10 good example answers ( go straight to the answers here ).

Photography vs Taking Photos

If someone asks you about photography , it doesn’t only mean ‘taking photos.’

Photography is the creative art of taking beautiful photos and also processing them to make them look amazing. It’s a higher level skill ( read example answers about simply ‘taking photos’  here ).

So in your answer to this photography question, it’s a good idea to let the examiner know that you understand photography is the art of taking amazing photos.

You might mention the skill of photography or how much you admire this skill in others. For example, you could say:

Yes, I do. I’m not very good at taking photos myself, but I appreciate good photography when I see it in magazines, or online.’

‘Yes, I do. I’d say I’m quite good at photography. I’ve been practicing taking pictures for years and I understand how to make a photo look stunning.’

See more example answers below.

Try To Be Fast and Fluent

Remember that part one of the speaking test is only meant to warm you up .

So the most important thing is to speak as quickly and fluently as you can, without hesitation.

Don’t pause while you try to think of amazing vocabulary related to photography. Just say anything you can think of, as fluently as you can, without hesitation.

Save the advanced vocabulary for part two when you’ll have more time to think and prepare.

Keep It Short

Don’t ramble (speak for too long) in part one. Keep your answers quite short. About 10 or 20 seconds is fine.

It’s important to know when to stop talking.

You can follow the three-step YES Method to help you with this. Just say:

  • Y our answer (say ‘yes, I do’ or ‘no, I don’t’)
  • E xplain your answer (say why you like or dislike photography) or add more details
  • S top talking (wait patiently for the next question)

Here are 10 good example answers. Read them and see if you can borrow some ideas for your own answer.

‘Yes, I Do’ Answers

1. Sure, I’m a big fan of photography. In fact, I took a photography course about six years ago and really enjoyed learning how to take beautiful pictures wherever I go.

2. Yes, I do. I’d say I’m a very visual person and so I really enjoy looking at gorgeous photographs online. I’m not very good at photography myself, but I appreciate the skill of real photographers.

3. Yes, I do. I think photography is one of the most important art forms these days. We all need to have some skill in photography because of social media, which needs lots of great photos.

4. Yes, I do. I love taking photos and I’ve always wanted to learn real photography so I can take even better pictures of myself and my friends.

5. Yes, I do like photography. I remember last year I visited an amazing photography gallery in my city, which had many incredible pictures. They were powerful and I found them quite moving.

‘No, I Don’t’ Answers

6. No, to be honest, I don’t really care about photography. But I do like other forms of art, like painting and creative writing.

7. No, I don’t. I’ve never been interested in photography, either taking photos myself or seeing the photos of other people. I just find it all a bit boring.

8. No, I don’t really like photography, to be frank. I have a few friends who love photography and they take their cameras everywhere they go. But I just can’t get into it.

‘Kind Of’ Answers

9. Well, to be frank, I’m really not into photography. But I do sometimes enjoy the photos of other people. When I’m trying to decide where to travel or where to eat, photos I see online help me to decide.

10. I suppose I’m kind of interested in photography. I like taking photos, although I’m not very skillful. I’d like to learn more about it one day. Perhaps I’ll even take a photography course.

Your Turn To Answer

Turn on your voice recorder and give this question a go yourself. Ask out loud, “Do you like photography?”

Answer clearly and quickly, without hesitation. Use the three-step YES Method and remember to focus on fluency rather than vocabulary and grammar.

When you’ve finished, listen to your recording, and then answer again. Try to improve a little each time.

This is a fantastic way to prepare for a band-seven score in part one of your IELTS Speaking test.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Band 8+ Sample Answers – Topic: Photography

1. Do you like to take photographs? (Why?) Yes, definitely. I think photography is great since it helps us to document our life and keep our memories from fading, and the photographic process is also fun.

2. Do you prefer to take photos yourself or to have other people take your photo? Why? To be honest, I like to take photos by myself so that the precious moments are captured from my perspective. Moreover, as I’m not really good at posing for pictures, I always find it embarrassing when being a model for someone.

3. What kind of photos do you like to take? Why? Well, I think the kinds of photos do not matter. I tend to capture things that are not moving, since it is easier for me to catch the right angle to make the picture more eye-catching.

4. How (why) did you become interested in photography? Well, my father, who is a very seasoned photographer, has taught me many principles of photography. Thanks to him, I won first prize in a photography contest when I was 10 years old and have fallen in love with it ever since.

5. Do you prefer to take pictures of people or of scenery? Oh I could say without hesitation that landscape photography is more appealing to me as I was born and lived for quite a long time in ABC, a small city whose population is low but the scenery is gorgeous. I’ve shot lots of great pictures there.

6. How often do you take photographs? In the past, I used to take photos on a weekly basis as I was really addicted to it. However, as I’ve grown up and have had many tasks to deal with, I rarely use my camera anymore.

7. How do you keep your photos? I usually print them out and keep them in albums so they will be protected. Besides, I also store my photos on my computer disk and on the internet for backup.

8. Do you frame (or have you framed) any of your photos? No, I don’t. To me, photos frames can take up lots of space so I would rather use albums or just save them on my phone.

9. Do you prefer to send postcards to people or to send photos that you took yourself? (Why?) Sending photos which I have taken might be more valuable because I can use the contents of the photos to express my current feelings towards the receiver. Take beaches as an example. When I’m happy, I often shoot the scene of children running around and playing water sports, while I like to capture a peaceful sunset when I am feeling down in the dumps. In contrast, postcards are made by other people so they are just meaningless to me.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Topic: Describe a photograph in your home

IELTS Speaking Part 2 2020

IELTS Speaking Part 2

Describe a photograph in your home. You should say: • what is in the photo   • where this photo is in your home    • how this picture was taken   And explain what this photo means to you.

Like many other Vietnamese families, I have a big photograph of my family which is hung on the wall of my living room. It is the first thing that you notice when you walk in the room.

This photo was taken a year ago on the occasion of my cousin’s wedding. It was the first time  for ages that my whole family had gathered together . Even my relatives who are living further away came home to attend the wedding. It was possibly the first picture of my  extended family with my grandmother, all of my grandmother’s children and the in-laws , and I have lost count of how many grandchildren are in it. It’s a brilliant photo, with everyone smiling and laughing, taken by a professional photographer who put everyone at  their ease.

As a typical traditional Vietnamese, I treasure my family. Our ties are worth more than gold. No matter what happens, I strongly believe that my parents, my siblings and relatives will always be on my side supporting me. Every time I look at the photograph of my loving family, I feel blessed and proud.

Vocabulary:

– for ages: [expression] a very long time. Example: I waited for ages , because the flight had been delayed for several hours.

– gathered together: [verb] it was the first time for many years that my family had all come together in the same place, at the same time. Example: the children were all gathered together in the garden.

– extended family : [noun] a family group that includes not only parents and children, but also aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and in-laws. Example: she grew up surrounded by a large extended family .

– the in-laws: [ noun] your relatives by marriage, especially the parents of your husband or wife. Example: I am visiting my in-laws on Sunday [the parents of my wife and also her two sisters].

– lose count of: [verb] to forget how many there are of something [because there are a lot of them]. Example: I have lost count of how many times I have told the students to do their homework.

– put everyone at their ease: [verb] the photographer made everyone feel relaxed. Example: in the exam, the examiner put the students at their ease by being friendly and informal.

– treasure: [verb] to have something that you love and is very valuable to you. Example: I treasure his friendship, because it is very important to me to have him as my friend.

– ties: [noun] strong connections between people Example: the ties of friendship and family ties are the most important connections in our lives.

– siblings: [noun] brothers or sisters Example: the younger children were badly treated by their older siblings.

– blessed: [adjective] fortunate, in a way that brings a feeling of peace. Example: he was blessed with many good friends and a loving family.

How to Describe a Photo (IELTS Speaking)

Posted by David S. Wills | Sep 4, 2017 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 1

How to Describe a Photo (IELTS Speaking)

In the IELTS speaking exam, you may be given the opportunity to describe a photo (or perhaps describe a picture). In this lesson, I will show you how to do that as effectively as possible.

Cue Card: Describe a Photo

In part 2 of the IELTS speaking test, you could be given this cue card:

Describe one of your favourite photographs. You should say: When the photograph was taken What it looks like What significant memory you have regarding this photograph and explain why it is one of your favourite photographs.

However, as always you should be very careful to read the question and make sure that you understand it fully before saying anything. There are variations and you will not necessarily be asked the question that is included above. It could say “describe a photo that you saw when you were young” or “describe a photo of a family member” or something like that. These would all require different descriptions of photographs.

Remember to analyse the cue card carefully and think precisely about what you must describe. However, don’t waste too much time doing this. You only have one minute to prepare your ideas. Here is a video I made about giving great answers for IELTS speaking part 2:

Using Photography Vocabulary in IELTS

So how do you talk about photos? Of course, you are not expected to be an expert photographer in order to do well at IELTS. You only need a basic and non-specialist knowledge of any subject. Still, if you are asked to describe a photo then you should be prepared and that means knowing some basic vocabulary and grammar to handle a question like this.

To cover the vocabulary part, I made a helpful guide to IELTS photography vocabulary for IELTS to help you:

describe a photo for ielts

Sample Answer: Describe a Photo

So how can you use this vocabulary to answer the above question? Here’s a sample answer:

I take a lot of photos so it’s hard for me to pick just one, but if I had to I would choose a photo of a hippo in a lake. Last year I went on holiday to South Africa for the winter, and I visited a place called St. Lucia. They have a lot of amazing wildlife in South Africa and in St. Lucia there are many crocodiles and hippos. I was overwhelmed when I saw them, and for several days I walked around taking photos of these amazing creatures. One day, I got the courage to walk right into the middle of a sand bar and shoot some photos as the sun was setting over the lake. The result was a series of beautiful red and orange-tinged shots with a variety of wildlife dotting the landscape . In one photo, however, a huge hippo came out of the water and opened its mouth really wide! I didn’t even realize until I got home what happened, but the whole experience stuck in my mind. The photo is now printed and framed on my wall so that I never forget the feeling of being among such incredible animals in a place of such natural beauty.

Other Possible Photo Questions for IELTS Speaking

If you were asked to describe a favourite photo or a special photo for IELTS Speaking Part 2, then you might be given some of the following questions as a follow-up:

  • What do you think about ‘Photography’ as a career?
  • What makes a good photograph?
  • How often do you take photographs?
  • What are the improvements latest technologies has brought in photography

Also, if you do really enjoy photography, you might use that in Part 1 as a response to questions about hobbies or activities you do in your free time. If you get asked what you do with your friends, you might reply that you take selfies. 🙂 I’m sure the examiner will be impressed with your colloquial vocabulary.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Photography Question

Finally, let’s look at one example question from part 3 of the IELTS speaking test. Here, we will look at a slightly abstract question:

What are the advantages of taking photos on a mobile phone instead of on a normal camera?

You can see that this is not personal, like it would be for part 1. You should thus talk about society at large rather than your own personal experiences. Still, you can talk about yourself a little and incorporate some of your views where necessary. For example:

Mobile phones are now typically equipped with quite advanced cameras, so the advantages that so-called “normal cameras” have over them are diminishing. It used to be that a phone camera would have a pretty limited capacity and so you would only use it when you have no choice, but now they are really quite intelligent. They are idiot-proof, which means you should be able to pull it out and point it in any light to get a decent-quality picture, whereas a DSLR or similar camera would require a lot skill in order to get a good photo.

You can see that I answered that without much difficult vocabulary. I used the term DSLR , but apart from that there was nothing really challenging. This is ok. Remember that it is more important to be accurate than to have a fancy vocabulary.

Photo is an artistic representation of the world for some while it is a means of storing memories for people like me. A simple memory of past which then sounded absurd may reveal a beautiful memory of childhood. Back then, I thought my hair was messy, background wasn’t perfect and I was ugly. But then again the pic looks beautiful now with all its imperfections perfectly apt. Just like the famous quote ‘Life was better when Apple & Blueberry were mere fruits’, this memory remained with me as we had to print each photo in previous times. There was no option to recheck & store in digital view and print only if satisfied. So it is perfect to have imperfect shots for they happen to delight us one day regardless of worldwide appraisal or an award.

Mobile phones have quite advanced cameras, so portable & weightless cameras which we carry anyway as part of our lifestyle give us a significant advantage over normal costly & heavy cameras. Mobile cameras come up with different set of options to take snapshots of scenery in various lighting effects like night view etc as well. It seems less complicated and needs less amount of skills to take a photo from mobile rather than normal camera.

Do you like taking photographs.

Absolutely, I have a profound admiration for photography. It's fascinating to me how we can freeze moments in time and preserve them. As a tradition in my family, we highly value memories and bonds with our loved ones, and photographs serve as a tangible reminder of those connections. They're not just pictures to me; they're memories, stories, and emotions encapsulated in a single frame.

have a profound admiration for (phrase): /hæv ə prəˈfaʊnd ædməˈreɪʃn fɔː/ - có sự ngưỡng mộ sâu sắc cho

freeze moments (verb phrase): /friːz ˈmoʊmənts/ - ghi lại khoảnh khắc

preserve (verb): /prɪˈzɜːrv/ - bảo tồn

tangible (adjective): /ˈtændʒəbl/ - hữu hình, có thể chạm vào được

encapsulated (verb): /ɪnˈkæpsjʊleɪtɪd/ - được gói gọn, tóm lược

How often do you take photos?

Well, I'm almost always seen with my camera or phone at the ready . I take photos very frequently - nearly every day. I love street photography , and luckily around Hanoi there are so many beautiful sights around me, from the lush rice fields in the suburbs to the vibrant streets of the city center, all offering countless opportunities for capturing wonderful images.

at the ready (phrase): /æt ðə ˈrɛdi/ - sẵn sàng

street photography (noun): /striːt ˌfəˈtɒɡrəfi/ - nhiếp ảnh đường phố

lush (noun) /lʌʃ/ - tươi tốt, xanh mướt

capturing (verb): /ˈkæptʃərɪŋ/ - chụp, ghi lại

Suburbs (noun): /ˈsʌb.ɜːrbz/ - vùng ngoại ô

In which situation do you like to take photos?

I enjoy taking photos in a variety of situations. However, I particularly cherish photographing during our traditional festivals like Tet or Mid-Autumn Festival. The colorful decorations, traditional dresses, and joyous expressions of people provide a unique opportunity to capture the essence of our culture. In quieter moments, I also like taking photos of everyday life - the bustling markets, tranquil temples, or serene landscapes.

Do you prefer to take pictures of people or of scenery?

That's indeed a difficult question. While I enjoy taking pictures of people, capturing their genuine emotions and moments, I also find immense pleasure in photographing scenery. In Vietnam, we are blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, from the awe-inspiring karsts of Halong Bay to the verdant terraced fields of Sapa. So, if I had to choose, I'd probably lean a bit towards photographing scenery, because it brings out a sense of serenity and tranquility that's hard to describe.

Blessed with (phrase): /ˈbles.ɪd wɪð/ - được ban tặng

Serenity (noun): /səˈren.ɪ.ti/ - sự thanh bình

Tranquility (noun): /træŋˈkwɪl.ɪ.ti/ - sự yên bình

Do you prefer to take photographs yourself or to have other people take photos?

While I appreciate the talent of other photographers and enjoy being in their pictures, I love being the one to press the shutter button . It's like painting my own canvas - deciding the composition , adjusting the lighting, and capturing the exact moment that I want. It's a creative process that I truly relish .

Example: I relish the opportunity to explore new places through my camera lens. (Tôi thích thú với cơ hội khám phá những nơi mới qua ống kính máy ảnh của mình.)

How do you keep your photos?

In the digital age, I do store most of my photos online, using cloud services . This allows me to easily share them with friends and family, and also ensures they're safe and secure. However, being from a culture that appreciates tangible reminders of our past, I also enjoy getting some of my favorite photos printed. I maintain a few photo albums at home, which are always a delight to flip through during family gatherings . Additionally, I love using my photos as décor – a wall in my room is dedicated to a collage of my best shots, serving as a daily reminder of the beauty that surrounds us.

photo albums (noun): /ˈfoʊtoʊ ˈælbəmz/ - album ảnh

flip through (verb phrase): /flɪp θruː/ - lướt qua

collage (noun): /kəˈlɑːʒ/ - bức ảnh ghép

Tangible (adjective): /ˈtæn.dʒɪ.bəl/ - hữu hình

Family gatherings (noun): /ˈfæm.ɪ.li ˈɡæð.ər.ɪŋs/ - buổi họp mặt gia đình

Décor (noun): /deɪˈkɔːr/ - trang trí

Migrants scalped a young guy

The incident occurred because a guy with green hair asked migrants for a cigarette, who did not like his appearance.

19-year-old Yury Markov was thrown to the ground, beaten and cut off part of the skin from his head along with his hair.

In the photo Yuri Markov

Currently, one of the participants in the execution has been detained; he turned out to be a native of the Komi Republic. At the same time, some media reports that the guy was attacked by the so-called ‘Sharia patrol’ – outcasts professing Islam.

UPD: In an interview with journalists, Yuri Markov confirmed that he himself approached two citizens of Caucasian appearance, one of whom said that he was an ethnic Azerbaijani.

UPD 2: Both attackers were detained, one of them was born in Tajikistan.

‘We can’t restore our civilization with someone else’s babies’ -Steve King, former Iowa representative.

' src=

im no racist but the only clear-thinking people are us BORN westerners…

' src=

Define that term in more detail. EVERY single Westerner? If that was the case, we wouldn’t be complaining about anything now would we? Have you seen US? Cities that were once great, now crime-ridden nigger-infested shitholes. Who let them in? Not the fucking Asians or Russians or Brazilians that’s for sure

' src=

Mr. Solution, when was the last time you actually visited America? My charming small town here is 82.4% white. Very little crime. One time these Latino guys and gals stabbed their rival a bunch of times a few years ago. And a black man shot someone in the head in 2021. And last year a young white man stabbed his female roommate to death. But that’s it.

' src=

Ok, so, one day you complain about shitskins, the next day you say it’s not so bad. Are you just arguing to disagree with me? I visited the US 10 years ago actually, and I’ve seen what I’ve expected, a land of mutts and people from all over the world. Instead of being ethnically homogenous, you got ethnic and cultural enclaves everywhere. Your little town of “whites” is statistically speaking probably a bunch of sheep who would vote for their own destruction tomorrow because they don’t know shit. Never picked up a history book in their life, has no identity, no national or ethnic pride, has their soul crushed within them by white-guilt psyops and what not. You may as well write 82.4% traitor sleeper cells. Just waiting to be activated.

What about Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia? Detroit where the US autoindustry is based, now a shithole where you don’t dare look out the window in case you get your head blown off by Lil Tick from the 123rd St. Shitskin Squad.

And in general, is the white population not decreasing and the shitskins increasing in the US? Tomorrow, it’s your little town that’s next to be die-versified.

This is highly reminiscent of the Roman Empire. They weakened internally, then the barbarians flooded the gates. If you have a negative view of Nazi Germany or Hitler, you and me are not on the same side despite our identical skin color.

' src=

Should line all three up and execute. 2 for being nasty niggers, 1 for being faggot with colored hair.

' src=

Westerners are the clowns of a big country of a circus.

' src=

countries you mean western civilization isn’t just one country you know

' src=

At least his attackers were of “Caucasian appearance”. I would love for the migrants here in the US to be of Caucasian appearance. Sadly, that’s not the case in the West.

' src=

Caucasians? Why would you want Armenians, Georgians, Chechens in the US?

I hate stupid people

' src=

That’s what you get for trying to be the popular guy . 😝
