Resources: Discussions and Assignments

Module 2 assignment: industrialization—a blessing or a curse.

In this assignment, you’ll consider the pros and cons of industrialization.

Step 1 . First, read through these four sources that relate to the industrial age . Make a copy of the document (File > Make a Copy) or download the document (File > Download) so that you can type directly onto your own copy.

In your own copy of the document, answer the three questions in the right-hand column about each source.

Step 2 : Write a short essay response to ONE of the following questions:

Were the industrial titans of the Gilded Age “robber barons” seeking profit at the expense of their workforce, or were they simply entrepreneurial industrialists whose rapidly growing industries provided thousands of well-paying jobs to less-skilled workers? Why or why not?

To what extent has industrialization been a blessing or a curse to American society? Explain.

In your response, reference all 4 of the documents (simply typing (Source A) or (Source D) when you reference each one is sufficient). Your response should be between 300-500 words. You should have a clear thesis statement that answers the question and supporting evidence from the documents.

Step 3 : Submit your finished work, including the copy of your document with the answers to the 12 questions, as well as your short essay response.

Maggie BartonyThe Industrial Revolution: A Blessing or a Curse? In this paper, I will analyze whether the Industrial Revolution was a blessing or a curse on the people of that time. The Industrial Revolution began in England. It was a time when new sources of power were replacing human and animal power. The Industrial Revolution lasted from1750 to 1850. During this time there were advances in medicine, farming, and in the factory industry. The Industrial Revolution led to many great inventions that we still use today, but the people of that time were faced with multiple struggles. I argue that the Industrial Revolution was a curse. I will prove this by analyzing the people’s work conditions, living conditions, and the pollution on the environment.First I will discuss the people’s working conditions. According to schoolshistory.org, “At the start of the Industrial Revolution none of these laws existed and so working in a factory couldprove to be very dangerous indeed.” During the Industrial Revolution everyone began to work, especially the women. The employers hired women during this time because they believed that women were able to adapt more easily and because they did not have to pay the women as much as the men. One major problem with the Industrial Revolution was child labor. Children’s jobs included changing spools, climbing through mining shafts, and pushing coal carts. The wages thechildren earned were needed to keep their families from starving, and because of this many children had to stop their education at an early age. All workers worked about twelve to sixteen hour shifts, had a rigorous schedule, and received many injuries due to unsafe machines. According to webs.bcp.org , one worker from the time said, "there are factories, no means few in number, nor confined to the smaller mills, in which serious accidents are continually occurring, and in which, notwithstanding, dangerous parts of the machinery are allowed to remainunfenced". Overall working during the Industrial Revolution was very harsh and an extreme curse on the people of that time.Secondly I will discuss the living conditions during the Industrial Revolution. During thistime, most people lived in crowded buildings called tenements. Here there was no running water, only community pumps. There was also no sewage or sanitation system. According to firstindustrialrevolution.weebly.com, “At the time, population was increasing rapidly because of more people moving in, so apartments became more crowded and in worse condition. These were the people that lived every lives that had to fight for jobs.” Along the streets there was waste and trash crowded everywhere. Since there were such harsh conditions, diseases such as cholera spread very quickly. Cities were extremely crowded, for example the British town of Manchester numbered 17000 people in the 1750’s, within a few years it exploded into the center of the textile industry. This further proves how the Industrial Revolution was a curse among the people of its time. Lastly I will discuss how the Industrial Revolution had a negative effect on the environment. According to eco-issues.com “The use of machinery and factories led to mass production, which in turn led to the development of numerous environmental hazards. The effects on the environment would only be seen clearly years later.” Since factories were being used more, more of the air was becoming polluted. This was all being caused because of the coal vapor. Also there was a constant complaint of the pounding noise of the steam engine. Lastly there was a constant stench in the river. The once beautiful nature that so many had become accustomed to was now gone. Factories and mass production as led to a loss of natural resources that we are still affected by today. One example of this loss is deforestation, which caused all lossin these forests to be uprooted. This proves that the Industrial Revolution curse on the people thatwe still experience today. As you can see the Industrial Revolution truly was a curse on the people. Even though theIndustrial Revolution led to many great inventions that greatly improved our society, the people of that time did not get to experience the joys of the Industrial Revolution. They were faced with terrible living and working conditions. They also faced a great disaster in their environment. The people were too concerned with their own problems to be enjoying the advancements of the Industrial Revolutions. The Industrial was undeniably a blessing upon future generations, but on its own era it was most certainly not. The people faced many difficulties and it was sad that they were not able to picture the Industrial Revolution as such a joyful way as we do. Although you have to think, if the people of the Industrial Revolution had not experienced these hardships and worked fixed them, would we still be experiencing the hardships today?Historian’s Paper Rubric/30Name_________________Content (20 Points)Format (10 Points)Times New Roman___12 Point Font___1 inch Margins___Double Spaced___Title Underlined/Name in Center___In text citations are formatted according to this class___Paragraphs contain at least 8 sentences (5 paragraphs for honors, 3 foracademic)___Thesis statement is visible, strong, and can be proven

The Industrial Revolution. How was it a blessing?

The Industrial Revolution. How was it a blessing?

The Industrial Revolution brought about many positive changes, including increased employment opportunities and improved manufacturing processes. The use of new machinery and technology made work easier and allowed for mass production of goods, resulting in better quality products at cheaper prices. However, these positive effects came at a cost, including child labor, poor working conditions, long hours, and low pay. The Industrial Revolution disrupted family life and caused hardship for many. Despite these negatives, the Industrial Revolution was essential in building our nation’s strong economic system and vast manufacturing network. While it may have been a hindrance to society at the time, it ultimately shaped the future into what it is today. Overall, the Industrial Revolution was a great blessing to the world economy and manufacturing industry.

The Industrial Revolution had a transformative effect on work by creating more employment opportunities and saving time and money through the use of new machinery and technology. This technological advancement made work easier for individuals and allowed multiple people to achieve tasks that previously required one person’s effort. These positive effects greatly impacted the manufacturing industry.

The Industrial Revolution resulted in enhanced product quality, rendering them more accessible to the general population. This was achievable thanks to the cost-effective and rapid mass production brought about by industrialization, illustrating the evolution and enlargement of manufacturing. Nevertheless, these advantages were not without drawbacks. The era of the Industrial Revolution also witnessed adverse effects on society, including child labor, unfavorable working conditions, excessive hours of work, and inadequate wages.

The children who labored in these factories frequently encountered numerous challenges and dangers. They matured too quickly and some suffered from malnutrition as a consequence of working in factories. The Industrial Revolution, in a way, profoundly disrupted family life like never before witnessed in the world. Both the young children and the husbands were no longer at home, as they were working. Consequently, every member of the family assumed new responsibilities and jobs. These drawbacks hindered the progress of our nation into its current state.

The Industrial Revolution, despite causing misery for many people, was a crucial event that shaped our world. Our nation’s foundation lies in capitalism, and the essence of capitalism was embodied in the Industrial Revolution. It greatly benefited the global economy and manufacturing industry. Although it may have hindered society during its time, it ultimately molded the future into what it is today – a strong economic system intertwined with a vast manufacturing network. Therefore, it can be said that the Industrial Revolution was truly a significant blessing.

4th Industrial Revolution: Essay & Important Notes

Evolution of the fourth industrial revolution.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution finds its foundations laid on the third industrial revolution. With the changing technologies and innovations being made throughout the different revolutions, the fourth revolution was bound to take place. The term Fourth Industrial Revolution was coined by Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum.

Technologies Driving Change in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The 4 th revolution is dominated by a myriad of technologies. These include:

Artificial Intelligence

AI is being used in many ways in different aspects of life. AI can recognize complex patterns, reach voluminous information, and also take decisions on a logical basis. The advent of AI has reached a level wherein people can control appliances in their homes by just giving instructions.

Blockchain is a secure and decentralized manner of recording and sharing data. With this technology, it is possible to improve and track the supply chain, secure sensitive data, and also combat frauds. The best example of this technology being uses these days is the use of cryptocurrency.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

These technologies enable people to experience anything digitally. The use of these technologies has enabled people to overcome the boundaries between the virtual and physical worlds. A good example is how many stores allow their customers to try and experiment with products before making a purchasing decision.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology has made it possible to develop new medicines and drugs to cure life-taking illnesses. These have also made it possible to process and produce cleaner and greener energy, thereby enhancing the chances of a sustainable world.

The design and use of robots for personal and commercial purposes have become commonplace these days. Robots are being used in several industries to enhance efficiency and productivity and reduce human effort.

Internet of Things

Internet of Things has made it possible to connect devices used daily with the internet. With the help of IoT, it has become easy to track different aspects of businesses and industries. An example is the use of IoT by farmers to monitor the quality of fertilizers.

Pros and Cons of Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has brought several advantages for society and businesses including:

  • Increased productivity
  • Improved quality of life
  • Lower barriers to entrepreneurship
  • New markets for businesses

However, the industrial revolution propagated by technology also has some cons too. These include:

  • Inequality: The industrial revolution is beneficial for those who have access to the technologies and can use it for their benefit in the right way. People, businesses, and societies that cannot access technologies lag behind others and cannot benefit from the revolution in any manner.
  • Cybersecurity risk: With the increasing technological innovations, the threat of cybercrimes has also increased. Gadgets, robots, computers, and every technology are prone to attacks by unknown people.
  • Increased competition: The advent of technologies and their subsequent use in different industries and businesses has increased competition and businesses have to do more to survive the competition. Additionally, it also brings forth the issue of ethics as businesses make use of any means to survive the competition.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution radically impacts the daily life of people. The era can be that of knowledge, growth, and improvement in the manner in which people, businesses, and societies work and operates.

Important Notes

  • The Fourth Industrial Revolution is dominating the society and businesses of today.
  • Technological innovations have brought about changes in the way people live and carry out everyday activities.
  • There are many advantages of the Fourth Industrial Revolution as it brings about improvements in the lifestyle and also improves productivity.

With the increasing use of technologies, there are issues related to ethics and unequal access to technologies

Industrial Revolution, a Blessing or a Curse? Keaton moody. Hour 7

Sam Slater brought the first factory to America which started the factories in the northeast. Many people argued that rapid insdustrialization was a curse because it increased slavery and inequality. Many people also thought it was a blessing. Rapid industrialization was a blessing at the time because it had a lot more job opportunities, it boosted the economy, and formed labor unions.

Job Opportunities

Rapid industrialization helped with job opportunities from women to children to immigrants. Sadly not all was perfect there was discrimination for the women and immigrants but through time it went away. Everyone used to work from home, the women doing housework, making clothes, and cooking. Meanwhile the men would do farm work and field work. Then Sam Slater brought the first factory to America which made a lot of people get jobs outside of housework.

Boosted Economy

Since so many people were getting jobs it boosted the economy. This meant people working at factories could get more pay than what they were getting. People that usually did housework were getting job opportunities and factories were opening. Since these factories were opening, more cities were growing. More money was invested in finding a faster way to communicate which invented the telegraph.

Formed Labor Unions

Just because people got jobs doesn't mean they had good working conditions. Some people formed strikes, and others formed trade unions. Trade unions were a bunch of workers of the same skill that formed into groups to try to get their working conditions better. There were some problems, thought, the companies hired other people to take their place while they were trying to make their rights better. They called these people scabs and they were hated by the trade unions.
