For example, a native speaker will be using Grammarly to check for common errors such as a lack of apostrophes in contractions or using too much passive voice. It might offer suggestions if you’re using one word too often and it can even make a database check for plagiarism.

If you’re a beginner ESL writer, you may find this feedback helpful. However, feedback on word choice, formality, structure and staying on the topic question or essay question may be more beneficial. For this, you may need a writing instructor or English teacher to give in-person feedback in these earlier stages.

So how should you use Grammarly? To use Grammarly efficiently as an English learner you should consider it a final step in your writing process. Copy your text into the platform to do a final edit. But, always attempt to edit your own writing first as we discussed earlier in this post.

Everything is color-coded so you can easily see what needs to be updated.

You can make edits to your text right on the website and watch your readability score increase as you do! The more you use this website, the more aware you’ll become of the clarity and simplicity of your writing as you write.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the only way to write—you may prefer to write with more flowing, flowery language, and that’s absolutely something you can do! The Hemingway App is a good option for you, though, if your writing is difficult for others to understand, more lengthy than you’d like or if you just want to write in a simpler style.

The app is free however you can choose for a paid service that offers additional features.

Even native speakers will re-read their own writing several times to not only check for grammar mistakes but also to gain an understanding of how it will be read by others.

Mignon Fogarty, also known as the Grammar Girl, is the founder of the blog and website “Quick and Dirty Tips.” She’s an award-winning writer and podcast host, and has a number of other accolades.

And there’s a good reason for that: Her webpage is a goldmine (full of useful information) of grammar advice and writing tips for native and non-native speakers alike!

You can find articles that cover basic grammar rules all the way up to more specific issues such as when to use specific words, like in the case of historic vs historical .

There are two ways that you can make the most of this resource as an English learner. The first is to search for a specific answer to a question that you have in mind. Grammar Girl has the answers to many of the most common grammar questions. If you have a question about how to use a word or how to apply a grammar rule, there’s a good chance it’s been covered on the website.

The second (which is my favorite) is to simply scroll through the website, diving deep into all the interesting and funny articles. You’ll learn the interesting history of some words, incredible tips and of course plenty of writing-related advice.

It’s a great way to learn while having fun!

Udemy is an online education platform. It offers courses in pretty much anything! That means that there’s a full range of English writing courses for you to choose from, ranging in price, level of difficulty and area of specialty.

This is the perfect resource for a person who’s new to writing in English or for a learner who wants to focus on a particular type of writing, like creative or business writing. Basically, you’ll be able to find something valuable to your writing goals at any level!

Among the courses covered are specific courses such as one on formal email writing .

To make the most of this resource, it’s very important that you carefully select the right course for your goals. This means reading the reviews, watching the course preview and reading any feedback or notes left by people who have previously taken the course.

Make sure you keep up to date with the classes and prepare materials on a schedule! Since these are mostly courses that allow you to go at your own pace, you’ll have to keep yourself on track.

Cambridge English is considered the “gold star” of English learning and teaching. In fact, the Cambridge Exams are known around the world and are very sought after by English learners. Over five million Cambridge English exams are taken every year!

Because of this, the resources that they produce are highly professional and educational, like their great service called “Write and Improve.”

Once you set up your profile and current writing level, you’ll be taken to your dashboard. Here, you can start writing either in a “free writing style” or with a given topic. Once you’ve completed your writing, it’s assessed and leveled based on your spelling, grammar and vocabulary. It’s then checked against the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR) .

Project Gutenberg is an open-source (legally allowed to be shared for free) library with over 70,000 titles! Generally, the titles you’ll find here are a bit old, as many of the books are no longer protected by copyright.

You may be wondering how exactly an online library can help perfect your writing skills. Well, by allowing you to read great books for free, of course!

But you can’t just read—to really learn from this resource, you need to read actively and closely. Take your time and read passages slowly. Write notes in a journal so you can get a better feel for the language. Take note of new phrases and words, unfamiliar grammar structures and anything else that stands out to you.

Their writing section is a great mix of English writing resources and activities. These would suit any type of learner since they’re clearly arranged by difficulty and are designed for self-study. This means you can set your own schedule and focus on areas of interest that are relevant to you.

To begin, choose your appropriate level. To really make the most of the resource, you should be completing all the activities as well as interacting in the comments section. You may find some tips and feedback you wouldn’t otherwise get!

But what about the act of writing, itself? Forget complex grammar and spelling issues. Sometimes, sitting down and practicing writing is the hardest part of all!

750 Words tracks your writing and encourages you to write every day. The goal of the website is to get you to write 750 words—about three pages worth of writing—per day.

In addition to being a minimal and beautifully designed writing program, 750 Words provides feedback on the time you’ve spent writing, the number of words you wrote and the language you used. It also gives you a report on your writing output (how much you achieve).

There’s a big focus on habit building on the platform, which is an often forgotten but very important step! It can take anywhere from 18-254 days to form a habit, and 750 Words provides the motivation to write every day.

750 Words doesn’t check your spelling or grammar, so you can use it with some of the other resources in this list, like Grammarly.

To make the most of these writing resources, there are a couple of things you can do. First, you should be consistent with your writing—that is, do it regularly. This means that you should be writing every day . You can also plan out your schedule to include writing as part of your daily tasks.

You should also consider joining a community or writing club. This can either be online or an in-person writing club.

Writing clubs are an excellent way to motivate yourself as well as introduce yourself to new ideas. Best of all, they’re the perfect support for writing resources. They offer the opportunity to expand and grow your skills in a helpful environment. You can ask questions, request feedback or even seek advice about particular websites that other writers use.

You should also be using resources that actually help you to develop your English writing skills. This is a very important step. You need to think of online writing websites as a way to improve your writing quality and your skill. But it should always start with you! How to use the new AI writing tool in Google Docs and Gmail

Currently in beta, Help Me Write is a new generative AI writing tool built into Gmail and Google Docs. Here’s how to get the most out of it while avoiding its pitfalls.

Joining the generative AI gold rush, Google last month announced plans to bring several AI-powered tools , collectively called Duet AI , to its Workspace office suite. These features will include automated project planning in Google Sheets, the ability to create images from text prompts in Google Slides, and an automated writing tool in Gmail and Google Docs called “Help Me Write.”

The AI tools in Slides and Sheets are not yet available, but Help Me Write is in limited preview; you can try it out in Google Docs or Gmail on the web by signing up for access to Workspace Labs with your Google account. (You’ll be put on a waitlist before being granted access.) Like the well-known ChatGPT, Help Me Write is a chatbot tool that generates written text based on prompts (instructions) that you give it.

Whether you’re a professional writer or someone who dreads having to write for your job, the potential of AI assistance for your writing tasks is appealing. Help Me Write can indeed write long passages of text that are reasonably readable. But its results come with caveats including factual errors, redundancy, and too-generic prose.

This guide covers how to use Help Me Write in both Google Docs and Gmail to generate and rewrite text, and how to overcome some of the tool’s shortcomings. Because it’s in preview status, keep in mind that there may be changes to its features, and the results it generates, when it’s finally rolled out to the public.

(On a meta note, no part of this article was written by Help Me Write. Many articles about AI include a “twist” in which the author reveals that what you’ve been reading was, in fact, written by an AI. That’s not the case here. A major reason is the question of copyright — who owns the words that are generated by AI, especially if its service is free for public use?)

Use Help Me Write to generate text

Once you’ve been granted access to Workspace Labs, start a new blank document in Docs. At the top of the document is a button that includes a pencil with a + sign and the words “Help me write.” Or, if you open an existing document, you’ll see a small button with the “pencil +” icon at the left edge of your document page. In Gmail, the same icon appears on the toolbar along the bottom of the compose window.

Click this Help me write button. In Docs, the “Help me write” panel opens. In Gmail, a text entry bar appears at the bottom of the compose window.

Inside the panel or bar, you’ll see several suggestions for prompts — words that describe the subject and kind of writing you would like Help Me Write to generate — scroll through. These suggestions, such as “Pitch for a product that allows people to create holograms of themselves” or “An introduction for someone I met at the conference,” give you an idea as to how a prompt is worded.

Type in a prompt. For this guide, we entered “A step-by-step plan for starting a small catering and events coordinator business as a side gig” in Google Docs to prompt a planning document. And in Gmail we requested a business letter with this prompt: “Follow-up to the client recipient asking how satisfied they are with our service, and invite the recipient to respond to me with more questions.”

After you type in your prompt, click Create . Help Me Write will process your prompt, which may take several seconds; it depends on how complex the wording of your prompt request is. Then another panel will open displaying the text it generated, which might be sentences or whole paragraphs.

Below these results are options for starting over or refining the generated text:

Recreate: If you’re not satisfied with the text that Help Me Write generated, clicking this will instruct it to try again using your prompts.

Refine: Selecting this opens a small menu with further options:

Formalize: Help Me Write rewrites the generated text with wording at a higher academic reading level. (Be warned: this may result in prose that’s stilted or excessively wordy.)

Shorten: Help Me Write rewrites the generated text with fewer words.

Elaborate: Help Me Write will generate additional text to provide more details based on your prompts.

Rephrase (in Docs): Help Me Write will paraphrase the text it generated. This action is different from Recreate. When you click Recreate , Help Me Write starts the text generation process over again based on your prompts, but when you select Rephrase , Help Me Write will rewrite the text it already generated.

I’m Feeling Lucky (in Gmail): This is like rolling the dice, where Help Me Write will randomly rewrite your email draft in any number of ways, such as making it longer or more formal, or even arranged as song lyrics.

A client letter in the form of song lyrics is just one of the random results you might get with the “I’m Feeling Lucky” option.

When you’re happy with the text that Help Me Write generated for you, click Insert to add it to your document or email. After you insert the generated text, it becomes regular document text that you can edit as you see fit.

Use Help Me Write to rewrite text

You can use Help Me Write to rewrite your document or email, whether it was originally written by you or generated by Help Me Write.

To use Help Me Write to rewrite in Docs, highlight the text (phrases, sentences, or paragraphs) that you want Help Me Write to rework. Then click the Help me write icon to the left of the highlighted text.

A menu opens with the same “Refine” rewriting options we saw earlier: Formalize , Shorten , Elaborate , Rephrase . There’s also a fifth option on this menu: a “Custom” entry box where you can type in a prompt such as “in an informal voice” or “use simpler wording.”

In Gmail, you can use Help Me Write to rewrite your entire email draft — but unlike in Docs, you cannot have it rewrite individual phrases, sentences, or paragraphs. Click the Help me write icon on the toolbar, and on the menu that opens, you can select Formalize , Elaborate , Shorten , or I’m Feeling Lucky .

Keep caveats in mind and finesse the results

While Help Me Write can give you a head start on your business writing, the text it generates is far from perfect, so it’s important to review and edit its output. Here are some shortcomings to look out for in the results that Help Me Write generates:

Generic content: A lot of the passages that Help Me Write generates read generically, providing only very basic information. Even if you phrase your prompts very specifically, the results may still sound canned.

Redundant content: Help Me Write may generate text that basically says the same thing as text it generated before. This can happen when you have it generate several paragraphs and then instruct it to elaborate on a specific sentence or paragraph. The additional text Help Me Write generates may read similarly to other passages that it’s already generated for you. It may also choose to present this redundant content in a list format.

Similar results for different Google users: Other people using the same or similarly worded prompts with Help Me Write could receive similar results. This is likely to happen if you prompt it to write about a general topic — so two Google users who both prompt Help Me Write to generate text describing how to create a business plan, for example, will probably get results that read nearly alike. The more specific your request, the more likely you’ll be to get unique results.

Factual errors: If you prompt Help Me Write to write about subjects that are based on factual information (such as current business analyses or trends) or of a technical nature, you should scrutinize its results, regardless of how “correct” they may sound. You should conduct further research, searching the web for reliable resources to confirm what Help Me Write has generated.

In addition to fact-checking, you should perform general editing on all the passages that Help Me Write generates. This process includes reading through everything, then adding, rearranging, removing, and rewriting text as you feel is necessary. Practicing the craft of editing on Help Me Write’s output will help you shape your document or email into a final draft that is informative and appealing for other people to read.

A useful collaboration tool

Although you can have Help Me Write generate documents or emails from scratch, it can serve you better if you approach it as a writing assistant. For example, you can prompt Help Me Write to assemble a rough outline for a business proposal or marketing plan that you then flesh out with your own writing.

It can also be useful for collaboration — as a brainstorming tool, for instance. Try collaborating with your co-workers on a shared document, where each person prompts Help Me Write to generate ideas for all to build on.

In fact, your interaction with Help Me Write is itself a form of collaboration. You prompt Help Me Write to generate text, its results may in turn give you ideas for how to approach a topic, and you keep working with the AI to refine those results in your final draft — thus, Help Me Write becomes your collaborator.

AI writing is simply the latest tool in the always-evolving working relationship between people and technology. As long as you understand its rules and limitations, Help Me Write (and other AI-powered writing tools) can be an invaluable aide to kickstarting your writing process or refining what you’ve already written.

Writer, broadcaster, and former British Member of Parliament Gyles Brandreth, who compiled the book in the 1970s, writes in the new introduction to this second edition that he first learned of Carroll’s insomnia when he was commissioned to write a play based on the author’s life and work. The revelation shaped Brandreth’s approach to the project. “In the first act of my one-man play,” he writes, “the great man was in his Oxford college rooms talking to himself as he tried (and failed) to get to sleep. In the second act, he was in bed having dreams (and nightmares) peopled by the characters he had created, from the Mad Hatter to the Frumious Bandersnatch .”

This makes for a neat two-act structure. But for Carroll, waking and dreaming were not quite the opposites they seem to be. And since he believed dreaming to be a source of creativity, it follows that to him, sleeplessness might also be useful.

This is all well and good. But it’s especially hard for me when I get insomnia because I’m a teacher. I have to be on every day, all day; students demand nothing less. I’ve always suffered from intermittent insomnia, but, mercifully, never the kind that lasts more than a day or two. Dread is always my first response because my mind immediately fast-forwards to the next day, when I’ll be teaching one class after another with my response time compromised, a dangerous proposition when operating the heavy machinery of a middle school classroom. In recent years insomnia has usually hit me on Sundays, if it’s going to hit at all. That’s the worst because then not only do I start to shoulder the weight of the week without sleep, but I’m deprived of the good mood necessary for my students to mirror to make for a happy, functional classroom.

And as a teacher, I’ve taught Carroll’s books nearly every year I’ve been in the classroom. For my students and me, whether or not I’m teaching after a sleepless night, these days are always a wild tumble down the original rabbit hole into a dream for which we don’t need to be asleep. This is Wonderland-dream thinking, where stuff doesn’t make sense but also really does.

I always appreciate our classroom conversations about the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and all the rest of the exemplars of Wonderland’s rational madness. But most of all, I enjoy talking about a certain mad tea party with a Hatter, a March Hare, and a Dormouse. As the characters speak in turn, thoughts get tossed around like grenades, exploding in shrapnel of reason and absurdity. The wild chitchat gives Alice the chance to confront the difficulty she had with the Caterpillar: working out who she is, as best she can, with the words she has. Caught in a very lucid dream that might as well be waking, Alice struggles with who she is, how she feels, and making sense of whatever the hell is going on around her. Maybe, in 2024, you know the feeling?

Reading Lewis Carroll with my students has taught me that waking and dreaming aren’t as easily separable as we might want to think—and that we, as if in Wonderland, should lean into rationality and idiosyncrasy, waking and dreaming, to make sense of the world and ourselves.

OK , I thought, what do I have to lose? I tried the Guide for Insomniacs out one Sunday. Midnight came and went, and I remained wakeful and angsting for sleep. I’ve learned over the years that staying in bed when I have insomnia is too torturous for me to endure, so I got up and moved out to the couch, switched on a lamp with modest light, took out a little Moleskine book I usually use for reporting, and attempted some of Carroll’s exercises.

I started with the ones included in the “Rhymes at Midnight” section of the book, whose title I’d like to think is a sly allusion to a line of Shakespeare’s Falstaff in Henry IV (“We have heard the chimes at midnight ”). Carroll’s first suggestion is to write verses with a moral. Here’s what I came up with:

Sleep Is Good I wonder where sleep may be. I’ve let cares seize my mind. Fingers tighten, breathing, I plead With hostile sleep, how unkind. But I know sleep is not out there. It is in me, yet to emerge. I touch the tousled mess of my hair, Dreaming, eyes open, of latent sleep’s urge.

From there, Carroll suggests writing “dilutions,” which are poems in which the first line of each stanza is borrowed from the lines of stanza of a preexisting poem. You then are to write stanzas off those borrowed lines. Still feeling angsty and way too awake, I chose the final tercet (and the one line preceding it) from a translation of French poet Charles Baudelaire’s “ The Sadness of the Moon .”

Some pious poet, enemy of sleep, In greatest thrall To the mystery of it all, Takes in his hollow hand the tear of snow Clutching it close, Enduringly ephemeral, somehow, Whence gleams of iris and of opal start, Lights in purple black haze, Sleep turns inward on itself, And hides it from the Sun, deep in his heart, Where what matters endures, Through early dark, through early light.

Finally, still awake but maybe fading some, I tried—again per Carroll’s suggestion—writing an acrostic. His example is written off the name of one of his friends, but I chose “White Rabbit,” because, you know:

W ho do you think you are, H appy you can sleep, I gnoring the stupid hell T hat rages round each day. E veryone is appalled by you. R ight now I lie awake, A fraid waking is the worst kind of dream. B ut sleep will come when it’s ready. B ut oh how it eludes me now. I n terror, this inspires my scream, T ill a white rabbit wakes me into dream.

Finally, appropriately, I fell asleep after writing these lines. It worked!

The sections of this little book that I didn’t use but that might appeal to others include “Pillow Problems,” “Night Writing,” and “Ghosts and Nightcaps.” “Pillow Problems” offers math problems, puzzles, tangrams , a labyrinth, and word problems for the irrepressible problem-solvers out there. “Night Writing” includes instructions for how to use a nyctograph and alphabet cipher but is most endearingly archaic when it lays out the etiquette for proper letter writing.

The “Ghosts and Nightcaps” section includes recommendations for proper eating and drinking for rest, but also, in a wonderful bit of weirdness, Carroll’s matter-of-fact instructions for how to greet a ghost. “When encountering a ghost for the first time,” he writes, “it is necessary to remain as calm as may be and to retain the normal courtesies of civil society.” If that doesn’t work, he notes, you can try keeping your fears at bay by conjuring a ghost all your own, using shadow puppets (instructions included).

But it was “Rhymes at Midnight” that saw me off to slumber, after all, because it offered the best mix of aesthetic engagement and slight compositional angst, an approach that, for more emo-inclined types like me, is quite suitable. After my poetry exercises, I could even feel my consciousness unspooling till I could follow the thread down the rabbit hole. Now, I have to say, I might even use Carroll’s guide again. It made insomnia feel kind of funny and dark and thought-provoking, casting a spell over the experience much like that produced by reading about Wonderland’s twisted magic characters.

With insomnia, it’s often hard to remember that sleep will come at some point. When it does come and you wake up refreshed, it might be right to try, however you can, to keep one foot in the waking world and one foot in the dreaming world. That might seem bonkers, but then again, the glories and hilarities of Lewis Carroll would be lost on those who don’t heed the Cheshire Cat’s abiding insight: We’re all mad here.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is typically the hardest one to deduce. The purple group often involves wordplay, so bear that in mind.

I more or less figured out all of the groups as I was writing out the word list. The yellows were immediately obvious, while BUBBLE and SHRINK gave me an opening into the purples. Before submitting that group, though, I assembled the blues and greens in my mind just to be sure. That made it pretty easy to seal a perfect game this time around.
