Steps to Writing a 4000-Word Essay Fast

To write an essay, there are a number of steps that form the key milestones of the process. From the topic to the final draft, the steps are the same whether for a short 1-page essay or a long 50-page one.

The following short guide reveals some of the key steps to follow when writing an essay of 4000 words or thereabout.

Steps on writing 4000 word essay

1. Understand the Assignments

It can be wasteful if you answer a question that your instructor did not ask you to respond to.

If any part of the assignment is not clear, it is important to seek the professor’s advice. The only careless thing is to do an assignment without understanding it.

You will get a bad grade even if you write a good paper that fails to answer the question that the professor posed.

If the professor is nice, you may rewrite it although it is time-wasting.

2. Perform Thorough Research

After understanding the assignment, the next thing is to perform thorough research with ruthless efficiency. Let research be an avenue of procrastination but efficiency. The right approach is to set a time limit.

One should not get worried if you get more than enough information. However, the goal of researching is to help you access sufficient information to get you on course.

When you have the right details concerning a particular topic, it will be hard to deviate from the truth. In fact, you will nail it and get the right grade in the end.

3. Create a Flat Outline

An outline acts as a skeleton for your entire essay. It is a place where you want to build a list of topics that you will be tackling in your essay. It offers you direction as to where you want to stretch.

Before you begin to write your essay, it is critical to develop an outline because it mirrors your writing process. It is easy to discover what you want to say in the writing process. Mentioning subtopics in the outlines creates more room for discovery.

4. Focus on Quality

focus on essay quality

It is reasonable to dwell on quality over quantity. For instance, it is better to write a good 7-page essay with great quality than a 10 page one with poor quality.

Also, it may be counterproductive if you write more than what you need. In our case, the paper has to be more than good with the right number of pages.

5. Draft and Edit Separately

The first thing in this section is to focus your energy on writing and stuffing your content with relevant information that is valuable. Ensure that your content flows well and remains readable.

When writing long papers is creating a good flow. Let your audience find it easy to understand your argument as you express and articulate your points clearly.

Read our guide on how to write a long essay and get some insights on how to overcome this challenge and score the best grade for the task.

Write well and remain in a state of flow to the end. After making the first draft, you should now edit it separately. That means that you need to take a break and check your sentence flow and structures to determine if they flow well on not.

Alternatively, you can ask a confidant to proofread it for you willingly or at a small fee. A good proofreader should see some of the obvious mistakes and errors that you could not spot as you write.

FAQs on writing long Essays

Can you write a 4000-word essay by copy and paste.

No, you cannot write any essay by copy-pasting. Copying and pasting content for your 4000-word essay is equal to plagiarizing your work which is unprofessional. You will be committing academic dishonesty which is punishable once caught. Depending on the school rules, you may lose your trust and eventually affect your career in case the college expresses you forever.

How many Pages are 4000 Words Essay?

Your format will make the number of pages vary in this case. For example, if the instructions state that you should single space your work, then a 4000-word article may produce eight pages. On the contrary, if you are implementing a double spaced feature, then it will amount to 16 pages. In the two scenarios, it still remains a 4000 paged article.

Can you Write 4000-word Essay in a Day?

The duration depends upon the experience of a writer. For example, an average writer with minimal typing speed can take two hours to write a 4000-word article. However, if you want your content to have as many features as possible such as graphics, citations, links, and in-depth research, it can cost you about 14 hours.

How Long is an Essay? Guidelines for Different Types of Essay

Published on January 28, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The length of an academic essay varies depending on your level and subject of study, departmental guidelines, and specific course requirements. In general, an essay is a shorter piece of writing than a research paper  or thesis .

In most cases, your assignment will include clear guidelines on the number of words or pages you are expected to write. Often this will be a range rather than an exact number (for example, 2500–3000 words, or 10–12 pages). If you’re not sure, always check with your instructor.

In this article you’ll find some general guidelines for the length of different types of essay. But keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity – focus on making a strong argument or analysis, not on hitting a specific word count.

In an academic essay, the main body should always take up the most space. This is where you make your arguments, give your evidence, and develop your ideas.

The introduction should be proportional to the essay’s length. In an essay under 3000 words, the introduction is usually just one paragraph. In longer and more complex essays, you might need to lay out the background and introduce your argument over two or three paragraphs.

The conclusion of an essay is often a single paragraph, even in longer essays. It doesn’t have to summarize every step of your essay, but should tie together your main points in a concise, convincing way.

The suggested word count doesn’t only tell you how long your essay should be – it also helps you work out how much information and complexity you can fit into the given space. This should guide the development of your thesis statement , which identifies the main topic of your essay and sets the boundaries of your overall argument.

A short essay will need a focused, specific topic and a clear, straightforward line of argument. A longer essay should still be focused, but it might call for a broader approach to the topic or a more complex, ambitious argument.

As you make an outline of your essay , make sure you have a clear idea of how much evidence, detail and argumentation will be needed to support your thesis. If you find that you don’t have enough ideas to fill out the word count, or that you need more space to make a convincing case, then consider revising your thesis to be more general or more specific.

The length of the essay also influences how much time you will need to spend on editing and proofreading .

You should always aim to meet the minimum length given in your assignment. If you are struggling to reach the word count:

  • Add more evidence and examples to each paragraph to clarify or strengthen your points.
  • Make sure you have fully explained or analyzed each example, and try to develop your points in more detail.
  • Address a different aspect of your topic in a new paragraph. This might involve revising your thesis statement to make a more ambitious argument.
  • Don’t use filler. Adding unnecessary words or complicated sentences will make your essay weaker and your argument less clear.
  • Don’t fixate on an exact number. Your marker probably won’t care about 50 or 100 words – it’s more important that your argument is convincing and adequately developed for an essay of the suggested length.

In some cases, you are allowed to exceed the upper word limit by 10% – so for an assignment of 2500–3000 words, you could write an absolute maximum of 3300 words. However, the rules depend on your course and institution, so always check with your instructor if you’re unsure.

Only exceed the word count if it’s really necessary to complete your argument. Longer essays take longer to grade, so avoid annoying your marker with extra work! If you are struggling to edit down:

  • Check that every paragraph is relevant to your argument, and cut out irrelevant or out-of-place information.
  • Make sure each paragraph focuses on one point and doesn’t meander.
  • Cut out filler words and make sure each sentence is clear, concise, and related to the paragraph’s point.
  • Don’t cut anything that is necessary to the logic of your argument. If you remove a paragraph, make sure to revise your transitions and fit all your points together.
  • Don’t sacrifice the introduction or conclusion . These paragraphs are crucial to an effective essay –make sure you leave enough space to thoroughly introduce your topic and decisively wrap up your argument.

How Long is a 4,000 Words Essay? (Quick Answer)

Author Image

4000 words essay

In this guide, we’ll tell you exactly how long a 4000 words essay is and teach you how to structure it.

So whether it’s your first time to get such a lengthy assignment or your instructor has asked you to make your current essay longer , you’ll find this guide useful.

How Many Pages is a 4000 Words Essay?

Think of the length of a 4000 words essay in terms of an A4 paper with standard formatting.

Using an inch margin, Times New Roman or Arial font family, and 12 points font size in Microsoft Word, the essay will be 16 pages long double-spaced and 8 pages long single-spaced.

The following table provides additional information on the length of any type of an essay based on word count, provided the font size is 12 points.

How Do You Write a 4,000-Word Essay?

The steps to writing an essay don’t change with the increase in word count. Even a 4,000-word essay assignment follows the exact five-step process.

The only difference is the number of words your professor expects to see in your final paper.

Step 1: Pick a Topic

Skip this step if your professor has already given you a topic.

Otherwise, choose an interesting topic that falls within the scope of the essay prompt. Don’t choose a broad or narrow topic. Pick a specific, novel topic instead.

Step 2: Research

Set aside enough time to do extensive research to understand the topic. Gather as many relevant and authentic information as you can.

Depending on the instructions in the essay prompt, you have to provide an annotated bibliography prior to writing to provide your reader with an evaluation and summary of each source.

Step 3: Create an Outline

Your professor may ask you to submit an outline before you start writing.

The structure will communicate your presentation of ideas before you get into writing.

Even if they don’t ask for it, make sure you still create one to make your writing easier.

Beyond organizing your thoughts in a way that’s easy to explain, an outline helps you avoid silly mistakes when writing your final draft.

Step 4: Write Your Essay

Divide your work into three parts: an introduction, main body, and conclusion.

Your introduction should have a hook and include a thesis statement.

Divide the main body into paragraphs and make sure each paragraph focuses on a single idea.

Start each paragraph with a topic sentence, followed by evidence to support your idea, and then end with a closing link that transitions your reader to the next consecutive paragraph.

The number of paragraphs in the essay will depend on the number if ideas you’d like to present.

End with a strong conclusion. This is where you tie everything you’ve discussed in the many together to give an overall summary of the essay.

Don’t limit yourself to ending the essay with a quote . And you should not introduce a new idea here.

Step 5: Edit Your Work

Editing is the easiest part of working on your essay. You should spend at most 2 hours to get your paper ready for submission.

The bottom line is that as long as you invest your time in research, writing, and editing, you’ll end up with a great essay that your professor will be happy to read and mark.

How Long Does It Take to Write a 4,000 Words Essay?

How long it takes to write a 4,000-word essay depends on the complexity of the topic and how much research you have to do prior to writing.

As long as you do extensive research to understand the essay topic, the 4,000 words should be easy to type out in one sitting.

Since your instructor will more than likely question the quality of such a long essay, it’s best to invest enough time to develop the essay before the due date.

Say you have 6 days to submit the assignment.

Spend the first two days doing extensive research. Even if your instructor asks you to look into a complex essay topic, 48 hours should be enough time to look into the subject and understand it very well.

The third and fourth day should be enough for writing. Write 4,000 to 5,000 words high quality draft.

Take breaks in between writing sessions so you don’t strain. Crosscheck your work to make sure you’ve included all the important details that your essay shouldn’t miss.

Set aside the fifth day for revision. Proofread your work to find and fix all the grammatical errors. Identify long sentences and shorten them.

Delete unnecessary words from the essay, and if you can say something in a few words, rewrite Identify redundant words, phrases, sentences, or ideas and delete them from the essay.

If it helps, have someone else look at your work and offer a second opinion on the structure and comprehensiveness of the document.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

IB students around the globe fear writing the Extended Essay, but it doesn't have to be a source of stress! In this article, I'll get you excited about writing your Extended Essay and provide you with the resources you need to get an A on it.

If you're reading this article, I'm going to assume you're an IB student getting ready to write your Extended Essay. If you're looking at this as a potential future IB student, I recommend reading our introductory IB articles first, including our guide to what the IB program is and our full coverage of the IB curriculum .

IB Extended Essay: Why Should You Trust My Advice?

I myself am a recipient of an IB Diploma, and I happened to receive an A on my IB Extended Essay. Don't believe me? The proof is in the IBO pudding:

body_ibeescore.png

If you're confused by what this report means, EE is short for Extended Essay , and English A1 is the subject that my Extended Essay topic coordinated with. In layman's terms, my IB Diploma was graded in May 2010, I wrote my Extended Essay in the English A1 category, and I received an A grade on it.

What Is the Extended Essay in the IB Diploma Programme?

The IB Extended Essay, or EE , is a mini-thesis you write under the supervision of an IB advisor (an IB teacher at your school), which counts toward your IB Diploma (learn more about the major IB Diploma requirements in our guide) . I will explain exactly how the EE affects your Diploma later in this article.

For the Extended Essay, you will choose a research question as a topic, conduct the research independently, then write an essay on your findings . The essay itself is a long one—although there's a cap of 4,000 words, most successful essays get very close to this limit.

Keep in mind that the IB requires this essay to be a "formal piece of academic writing," meaning you'll have to do outside research and cite additional sources.

The IB Extended Essay must include the following:

  • A title page
  • Contents page
  • Introduction
  • Body of the essay
  • References and bibliography

Additionally, your research topic must fall into one of the six approved DP categories , or IB subject groups, which are as follows:

  • Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
  • Group 2: Language Acquisition
  • Group 3: Individuals and Societies
  • Group 4: Sciences
  • Group 5: Mathematics
  • Group 6: The Arts

Once you figure out your category and have identified a potential research topic, it's time to pick your advisor, who is normally an IB teacher at your school (though you can also find one online ). This person will help direct your research, and they'll conduct the reflection sessions you'll have to do as part of your Extended Essay.

As of 2018, the IB requires a "reflection process" as part of your EE supervision process. To fulfill this requirement, you have to meet at least three times with your supervisor in what the IB calls "reflection sessions." These meetings are not only mandatory but are also part of the formal assessment of the EE and your research methods.

According to the IB, the purpose of these meetings is to "provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their engagement with the research process." Basically, these meetings give your supervisor the opportunity to offer feedback, push you to think differently, and encourage you to evaluate your research process.

The final reflection session is called the viva voce, and it's a short 10- to 15-minute interview between you and your advisor. This happens at the very end of the EE process, and it's designed to help your advisor write their report, which factors into your EE grade.

Here are the topics covered in your viva voce :

  • A check on plagiarism and malpractice
  • Your reflection on your project's successes and difficulties
  • Your reflection on what you've learned during the EE process

Your completed Extended Essay, along with your supervisor's report, will then be sent to the IB to be graded. We'll cover the assessment criteria in just a moment.

body-lightbulb-idea-pixabay-cc0

We'll help you learn how to have those "lightbulb" moments...even on test day!

What Should You Write About in Your IB Extended Essay?

You can technically write about anything, so long as it falls within one of the approved categories listed above.

It's best to choose a topic that matches one of the IB courses , (such as Theatre, Film, Spanish, French, Math, Biology, etc.), which shouldn't be difficult because there are so many class subjects.

Here is a range of sample topics with the attached extended essay:

  • Biology: The Effect of Age and Gender on the Photoreceptor Cells in the Human Retina
  • Chemistry: How Does Reflux Time Affect the Yield and Purity of Ethyl Aminobenzoate (Benzocaine), and How Effective is Recrystallisation as a Purification Technique for This Compound?
  • English: An Exploration of Jane Austen's Use of the Outdoors in Emma
  • Geography: The Effect of Location on the Educational Attainment of Indigenous Secondary Students in Queensland, Australia
  • Math: Alhazen's Billiard Problem
  • Visual Arts: Can Luc Tuymans Be Classified as a Political Painter?

You can see from how varied the topics are that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to picking a topic . So how do you pick when the options are limitless?

How to Write a Stellar IB Extended Essay: 6 Essential Tips

Below are six key tips to keep in mind as you work on your Extended Essay for the IB DP. Follow these and you're sure to get an A!

#1: Write About Something You Enjoy

You can't expect to write a compelling essay if you're not a fan of the topic on which you're writing. For example, I just love British theatre and ended up writing my Extended Essay on a revolution in post-WWII British theatre. (Yes, I'm definitely a #TheatreNerd.)

I really encourage anyone who pursues an IB Diploma to take the Extended Essay seriously. I was fortunate enough to receive a full-tuition merit scholarship to USC's School of Dramatic Arts program. In my interview for the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay; thus, I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship.

But how do you find a topic you're passionate about? Start by thinking about which classes you enjoy the most and why . Do you like math classes because you like to solve problems? Or do you enjoy English because you like to analyze literary texts?

Keep in mind that there's no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing your Extended Essay topic. You're not more likely to get high marks because you're writing about science, just like you're not doomed to failure because you've chosen to tackle the social sciences. The quality of what you produce—not the field you choose to research within—will determine your grade.

Once you've figured out your category, you should brainstorm more specific topics by putting pen to paper . What was your favorite chapter you learned in that class? Was it astrophysics or mechanics? What did you like about that specific chapter? Is there something you want to learn more about? I recommend spending a few hours on this type of brainstorming.

One last note: if you're truly stumped on what to research, pick a topic that will help you in your future major or career . That way you can use your Extended Essay as a talking point in your college essays (and it will prepare you for your studies to come too!).

#2: Select a Topic That Is Neither Too Broad nor Too Narrow

There's a fine line between broad and narrow. You need to write about something specific, but not so specific that you can't write 4,000 words on it.

You can't write about WWII because that would be a book's worth of material. You also don't want to write about what type of soup prisoners of war received behind enemy lines, because you probably won’t be able to come up with 4,000 words of material about it. However, you could possibly write about how the conditions in German POW camps—and the rations provided—were directly affected by the Nazis' successes and failures on the front, including the use of captured factories and prison labor in Eastern Europe to increase production. WWII military history might be a little overdone, but you get my point.

If you're really stuck trying to pinpoint a not-too-broad-or-too-narrow topic, I suggest trying to brainstorm a topic that uses a comparison. Once you begin looking through the list of sample essays below, you'll notice that many use comparisons to formulate their main arguments.

I also used a comparison in my EE, contrasting Harold Pinter's Party Time with John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in order to show a transition in British theatre. Topics with comparisons of two to three plays, books, and so on tend to be the sweet spot. You can analyze each item and then compare them with one another after doing some in-depth analysis of each individually. The ways these items compare and contrast will end up forming the thesis of your essay!

When choosing a comparative topic, the key is that the comparison should be significant. I compared two plays to illustrate the transition in British theatre, but you could compare the ways different regional dialects affect people's job prospects or how different temperatures may or may not affect the mating patterns of lightning bugs. The point here is that comparisons not only help you limit your topic, but they also help you build your argument.

Comparisons are not the only way to get a grade-A EE, though. If after brainstorming, you pick a non-comparison-based topic and are still unsure whether your topic is too broad or narrow, spend about 30 minutes doing some basic research and see how much material is out there.

If there are more than 1,000 books, articles, or documentaries out there on that exact topic, it may be too broad. But if there are only two books that have any connection to your topic, it may be too narrow. If you're still unsure, ask your advisor—it's what they're there for! Speaking of advisors...

body-narrow-crack-stuck-cc0-pixabay

Don't get stuck with a narrow topic!

#3: Choose an Advisor Who Is Familiar With Your Topic

If you're not certain of who you would like to be your advisor, create a list of your top three choices. Next, write down the pros and cons of each possibility (I know this sounds tedious, but it really helps!).

For example, Mr. Green is my favorite teacher and we get along really well, but he teaches English. For my EE, I want to conduct an experiment that compares the efficiency of American electric cars with foreign electric cars.

I had Ms. White a year ago. She teaches physics and enjoyed having me in her class. Unlike Mr. Green, Ms. White could help me design my experiment.

Based on my topic and what I need from my advisor, Ms. White would be a better fit for me than would Mr. Green (even though I like him a lot).

The moral of my story is this: do not just ask your favorite teacher to be your advisor . They might be a hindrance to you if they teach another subject. For example, I would not recommend asking your biology teacher to guide you in writing an English literature-based EE.

There can, of course, be exceptions to this rule. If you have a teacher who's passionate and knowledgeable about your topic (as my English teacher was about my theatre topic), you could ask that instructor. Consider all your options before you do this. There was no theatre teacher at my high school, so I couldn't find a theatre-specific advisor, but I chose the next best thing.

Before you approach a teacher to serve as your advisor, check with your high school to see what requirements they have for this process. Some IB high schools require your IB Extended Essay advisor to sign an Agreement Form , for instance.

Make sure that you ask your IB coordinator whether there is any required paperwork to fill out. If your school needs a specific form signed, bring it with you when you ask your teacher to be your EE advisor.

#4: Pick an Advisor Who Will Push You to Be Your Best

Some teachers might just take on students because they have to and aren't very passionate about reading drafts, only giving you minimal feedback. Choose a teacher who will take the time to read several drafts of your essay and give you extensive notes. I would not have gotten my A without being pushed to make my Extended Essay draft better.

Ask a teacher that you have experience with through class or an extracurricular activity. Do not ask a teacher that you have absolutely no connection to. If a teacher already knows you, that means they already know your strengths and weaknesses, so they know what to look for, where you need to improve, and how to encourage your best work.

Also, don't forget that your supervisor's assessment is part of your overall EE score . If you're meeting with someone who pushes you to do better—and you actually take their advice—they'll have more impressive things to say about you than a supervisor who doesn't know you well and isn't heavily involved in your research process.

Be aware that the IB only allows advisors to make suggestions and give constructive criticism. Your teacher cannot actually help you write your EE. The IB recommends that the supervisor spends approximately two to three hours in total with the candidate discussing the EE.

#5: Make Sure Your Essay Has a Clear Structure and Flow

The IB likes structure. Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be one to two double-spaced pages), research question/focus (i.e., what you're investigating), a body, and a conclusion (about one double-spaced page). An essay with unclear organization will be graded poorly.

The body of your EE should make up the bulk of the essay. It should be about eight to 18 pages long (again, depending on your topic). Your body can be split into multiple parts. For example, if you were doing a comparison, you might have one third of your body as Novel A Analysis, another third as Novel B Analysis, and the final third as your comparison of Novels A and B.

If you're conducting an experiment or analyzing data, such as in this EE , your EE body should have a clear structure that aligns with the scientific method ; you should state the research question, discuss your method, present the data, analyze the data, explain any uncertainties, and draw a conclusion and/or evaluate the success of the experiment.

#6: Start Writing Sooner Rather Than Later!

You will not be able to crank out a 4,000-word essay in just a week and get an A on it. You'll be reading many, many articles (and, depending on your topic, possibly books and plays as well!). As such, it's imperative that you start your research as soon as possible.

Each school has a slightly different deadline for the Extended Essay. Some schools want them as soon as November of your senior year; others will take them as late as February. Your school will tell you what your deadline is. If they haven't mentioned it by February of your junior year, ask your IB coordinator about it.

Some high schools will provide you with a timeline of when you need to come up with a topic, when you need to meet with your advisor, and when certain drafts are due. Not all schools do this. Ask your IB coordinator if you are unsure whether you are on a specific timeline.

Below is my recommended EE timeline. While it's earlier than most schools, it'll save you a ton of heartache (trust me, I remember how hard this process was!):

  • January/February of Junior Year: Come up with your final research topic (or at least your top three options).
  • February of Junior Year: Approach a teacher about being your EE advisor. If they decline, keep asking others until you find one. See my notes above on how to pick an EE advisor.
  • April/May of Junior Year: Submit an outline of your EE and a bibliography of potential research sources (I recommend at least seven to 10) to your EE advisor. Meet with your EE advisor to discuss your outline.
  • Summer Between Junior and Senior Year: Complete your first full draft over the summer between your junior and senior year. I know, I know—no one wants to work during the summer, but trust me—this will save you so much stress come fall when you are busy with college applications and other internal assessments for your IB classes. You will want to have this first full draft done because you will want to complete a couple of draft cycles as you likely won't be able to get everything you want to say into 4,000 articulate words on the first attempt. Try to get this first draft into the best possible shape so you don't have to work on too many revisions during the school year on top of your homework, college applications, and extracurriculars.
  • August/September of Senior Year: Turn in your first draft of your EE to your advisor and receive feedback. Work on incorporating their feedback into your essay. If they have a lot of suggestions for improvement, ask if they will read one more draft before the final draft.
  • September/October of Senior Year: Submit the second draft of your EE to your advisor (if necessary) and look at their feedback. Work on creating the best possible final draft.
  • November-February of Senior Year: Schedule your viva voce. Submit two copies of your final draft to your school to be sent off to the IB. You likely will not get your grade until after you graduate.

Remember that in the middle of these milestones, you'll need to schedule two other reflection sessions with your advisor . (Your teachers will actually take notes on these sessions on a form like this one , which then gets submitted to the IB.)

I recommend doing them when you get feedback on your drafts, but these meetings will ultimately be up to your supervisor. Just don't forget to do them!

How Is the IB Extended Essay Graded?

Extended Essays are graded by examiners appointed by the IB on a scale of 0 to 34 . You'll be graded on five criteria, each with its own set of points. You can learn more about how EE scoring works by reading the IB guide to extended essays .

  • Criterion A: Focus and Method (6 points maximum)
  • Criterion B: Knowledge and Understanding (6 points maximum)
  • Criterion C: Critical Thinking (12 points maximum)
  • Criterion D: Presentation (4 points maximum)
  • Criterion E: Engagement (6 points maximum)

How well you do on each of these criteria will determine the final letter grade you get for your EE. You must earn at least a D to be eligible to receive your IB Diploma.

Although each criterion has a point value, the IB explicitly states that graders are not converting point totals into grades; instead, they're using qualitative grade descriptors to determine the final grade of your Extended Essay . Grade descriptors are on pages 102-103 of this document .

Here's a rough estimate of how these different point values translate to letter grades based on previous scoring methods for the EE. This is just an estimate —you should read and understand the grade descriptors so you know exactly what the scorers are looking for.

Here is the breakdown of EE scores (from the May 2021 bulletin):

How Does the Extended Essay Grade Affect Your IB Diploma?

The Extended Essay grade is combined with your TOK (Theory of Knowledge) grade to determine how many points you get toward your IB Diploma.

To learn about Theory of Knowledge or how many points you need to receive an IB Diploma, read our complete guide to the IB program and our guide to the IB Diploma requirements .

This diagram shows how the two scores are combined to determine how many points you receive for your IB diploma (3 being the most, 0 being the least). In order to get your IB Diploma, you have to earn 24 points across both categories (the TOK and EE). The highest score anyone can earn is 45 points.

body-theory-of-knowledge

Let's say you get an A on your EE and a B on TOK. You will get 3 points toward your Diploma. As of 2014, a student who scores an E on either the extended essay or TOK essay will not be eligible to receive an IB Diploma .

Prior to the class of 2010, a Diploma candidate could receive a failing grade in either the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge and still be awarded a Diploma, but this is no longer true.

Figuring out how you're assessed can be a little tricky. Luckily, the IB breaks everything down here in this document . (The assessment information begins on page 219.)

Welcome to Words per Page

Enter total number of words, type in your words.

There are times when it helps to know how many words per page you're writing. While a general guideline is one page is 500 words (single spaced) or 250 words (double spaced), this is a ballpark figure. The truth is the number of words per page depends on a variety of factors such as the type of font, the font size, spacing elements, margin spacing, and paragraph length to name a few. While it's not possible to take into all these factors when estimating how many words per page there will be for your writing, this calculator can give a more accurate words per page conversion estimate than the typical 250/500 ballpark figure .

The calculator is able to provide a more accurate conversion by taking into account more specific information. For example, you can choose from a different variety of common fonts to generate an estimate:

  • Comic Sans MS
  • Times New Roman

You can then choose your preferred spacing from the following options:

  • Single spaced
  • Double spaced

Finally, you can choose your preferred font size: 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14.

By using these three options to more accurately define your writing, the words per page calculator should provide a better estimate on how many words you need to write to fill a page. In the opposite direction, it can give a more accurate estimate of how many pages you have created if you only know the word count .

While we make every attempt to make our calculators as accurate as possible, the results won't be perfect. This converter addresses some issues to provide a more accurate estimate, but in the end, it's still an estimate. Other issues such as margin space and paragraph length will likely result in some variation from the calculations given. That being said, it should provide a more accurate indication of the number of pages a specific word count will be and the number of words per page you type when compared to the general rule of thumb.

For general information, the following are calculations using 12-point Arial font, double spaced:

How many pages is 500 words? 500 words is approximately 1.8 pages. How many pages is 750 words? 750 words is approximately 2.7 pages. How many pages is 1,000 words? 1,000 words is approximately 3.7 pages. How many pages is 1,250 words? 1,250 words is approximately 4.6 pages. How many pages is 1,500 words? 1,500 words is approximately 5.5 pages. How many pages is 2,000 words? 2,000 words is approximately 7.3 pages. How many pages is 2,500 words? 2,500 words is approximately 9.1 pages. How many pages is 3,000 words? 3,000 words is approximately 11 pages. How many pages is 4,000 words? 4,000 words is approximately 14.6 pages. How many pages is 5,000 words? 5,000 words is approximately 18.3 pages. How many pages is 7,500 words? 7,500 words is approximately 27.4 pages. How many pages is 10,000 words? 10,000 words is approximately 36.5 pages.

How many words are in one page? There are approximately 450 words in one page. How many words are in two pages? There are approximately 900 words in two pages. How many words are in three pages? There are approximately 1350 words in three pages. How many words are in four pages? There are approximately 1800 words in four pages. How many words are in five pages? There are approximately 2250 words in five pages. How many words are in ten pages? There are approximately 4500 words in ten pages. How many words are in 15 pages? If you’re writing a business report, you will need to follow a business analytical model (like SWOT or PESTLE ), and if you’re composing a theoretical analysis paper, it may require a literature review, a methodology, and some other sections that match your academic task.

If structuring a 4500-word essay is challenging for you, check out the free outline generator we’ve developed.

4500-Word Essay Introduction

As a 4500-word essay is much longer than a traditional essay, you may dedicate more than one paragraph to setting the stage and introducing your subject. Following a 10% rule for works larger than 1500 words, you may dedicate around 450-500 words to an introductory section, which will be roughly 1.5 pages of your text. It may take 3 to 5 paragraphs to explain the context and present a problem that you’re going to analyze in further sections. The end of your final introductory paragraph should contain the thesis statement – it may be longer than one sentence and take 2-3 sentences to clarify the scope of your inquiry.

A 4500-word essay introduction is a full-scale section that should contain a hook, a thesis, and a problem statement. Check out our hook sentence generator , thesis generator , and problem statement maker to get ideas for these introduction components. Or try using the free research introduction generator we’ve developed to prepare a catchy introductory part in no time.

4500-Word Essay Conclusion

The concluding part can also be more extensive, taking 450-500 words of your assignment. It will be a summative section in which the main points will be recapped, and the thesis statement will be revisited in light of the new data and evidence you’ve been discussing in the body paragraphs.

Consider utilizing our concluding sentence generator to make a closing section for your 4500-word essay quickly.

How Many References Should I Use in a 4500-word Paper?

The standard rule in academic papers is to allocate 8-12 sources for each 1,000 words of text. Thus, you may need up to 45 sources for an essay of this length. However, you need to discuss this issue separately with your instructor, as that number may be too much, and you will need to cover only 20-30 key readings on your subject.

You will automatically generate a reference list for your 4500-word paper with our free ai citation generator .

How Many Pages is 4000 Words: The Ultimate Word Count Guide

A 4000-word document typically spans around 8 pages. In this blog post, we will discuss various aspects of word count, including tips on how to estimate the number of pages for a given word count.

Whether you’re a student working on an assignment, a writer preparing a manuscript, or just curious about the length of a document, understanding the relationship between words and pages can be useful. By following our guidelines and considering factors such as font type, size, formatting, and spacing, you can more accurately determine the number of pages a specific word count will occupy.

So, let’s dive in and explore the topic in detail.

Factors Affecting Word Page Count

Factors affecting word page count include font type and size, line spacing, margins, and formatting styles. As a general guideline, 4000 words can range from approximately 8 to 16 pages, depending on these factors. Keep in mind that individual writing styles and content can also impact the final page count.

Font Size And Type

Margins and spacing, document formats (word, google docs, pdf).

  • Increase font size to 14 points: Results in a larger font, reducing the number of words on each page and increasing the page count.
  • Decrease line spacing: More words can fit on each page, increasing the page count.
  • Reduce margins: Allows for more words per page, increasing the page count.
  • Convert the document to a PDF format: May retain the same page count as the original document, but could affect how the content is displayed.

Variety In Formatting Options

When it comes to writing a 4000-word document, there is no denying that the formatting plays an essential role in enhancing the readability and overall impact of your content. The way your content is presented can make a big difference in how it is perceived by your audience. From academic papers to commercial publications, different formatting styles have their own unique impact on the reader. In this section, let’s explore the different formatting options available and their implications.

Impact Of Different Formatting Styles

Formatting styles can greatly influence how your content is perceived by the reader. Whether you are writing an academic paper or a commercial document, the use of different formatting techniques can help you achieve different goals.

For instance, in academic writing, a standard formatting style is often used to ensure consistency and readability. This includes guidelines such as using double-spacing, a specific font size and type, and proper citation formatting. These formatting standards not only help readers navigate through the content but also make it easier for researchers to locate specific information within the document. In the academic world, adhering to these formatting standards is crucial for maintaining the integrity and professionalism of your work.

On the other hand, commercial publications often employ a more creative and visually appealing formatting style. This includes the use of catchy headings, bullet points, bold and italicized text, and even images and infographics. The purpose of this formatting style is to engage the reader and make the content more visually appealing and user-friendly. By using a combination of different formatting techniques, commercial publications can effectively convey their message and capture the attention of their target audience.

Common Academic Vs. Commercial Formatting Standards

While there are some similarities between academic and commercial formatting standards, there are also some key differences that differentiate the two.

In academic writing, the focus is primarily on providing clear and concise information, while adhering to specific citation formats such as APA, MLA, or Chicago style. Tables and figures are often used to present complex data, and footnotes or endnotes are included to provide additional information or references.

On the other hand, commercial documents prioritize visual appeal and effective communication. This often involves the use of eye-catching headings, bullet points, and tables to present information in a concise and organized manner. The goal in commercial formatting is to engage the reader and make the content easily scannable, allowing the key points to stand out.

When it comes to choosing the right formatting style for your document, it is important to consider the purpose and target audience of your content. By carefully selecting the appropriate formatting techniques, you can enhance the impact of your words and effectively convey your message to your readers.

How Many Pages Is 4000 Words

When it comes to writing a document, be it a blog post, an academic paper, or even a novel, understanding how many pages your words will fill is essential. In this article, we will explore the question of how many pages is 4000 words. Whether you are a student working on an assignment or a writer trying to meet a word count, knowing how your words translate into pages can be helpful to visualize the length of your work. Let’s delve into it.

Single Vs. Double Spacing Examples

One key factor that affects the number of pages your 4000 words will occupy is the spacing used throughout the document. Single spacing means that there is no additional space between lines of text, while double spacing provides some breathing room by adding a line break between each line. Here are some examples:

Page Estimates With Common Fonts And Sizes

Another crucial element that influences the number of pages your 4000 words will span is the font type and size you choose. Different fonts and sizes can result in varying page lengths. Here are some page estimates for common fonts and sizes:

These estimates are based on average word and line lengths for each font type and size. Keep in mind that these are approximate numbers, and the actual length of your 4000 words may vary depending on factors such as spacing, formatting, and the amount of text on each page.

In conclusion, when it comes to determining how many pages 4000 words will fill, it is crucial to consider factors such as spacing and font type and size. By understanding these elements, you can better visualize the length and structure of your written work. Remember to adapt your formatting choices according to the guidelines provided by your institution or publication for optimal results.

Strategies For Meeting Page Requirements

When it comes to writing content, meeting specific page requirements can sometimes be challenging. Whether you are writing an academic essay, a blog post, or an article, it is essential to ensure that your content meets the required number of pages. In this section, we will explore strategies to increase or decrease page count, the role of visual elements in word count, and how you can use these techniques to meet your page requirements effectively.

Techniques To Increase Or Decrease Page Count

If you find yourself with too few words and needing to increase your page count, or vice versa, here are some techniques you can employ:

  • Expand on your ideas: Take a closer look at your existing content and identify areas where you can provide additional information, examples, or explanations. This will not only help you increase your word count but also enhance the depth and quality of your content.
  • Include more examples: Adding relevant examples can support your arguments and provide a better understanding to your readers. Not only will this help you meet your page requirements, but it will also make your content more engaging and informative.
  • Provide counterarguments: Presenting different viewpoints and addressing counterarguments is an effective way to expand your content. By acknowledging alternative perspectives, you demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of the topic and create a more comprehensive piece.
  • Break down complex concepts: If you need to decrease your page count, consider simplifying complex ideas. Break down long sentences or paragraphs into smaller ones, present information succinctly, and remove any unnecessary jargon or repetition.
  • Remove irrelevant content: Eliminate any sections that do not contribute directly to your main idea or argument. By eliminating irrelevant content, you can increase the clarity and focus of your piece while achieving the desired page count.

The Role Of Visual Elements In Word Count

Visual elements play a crucial role in content creation and can both increase and decrease your word count. Here’s how you can use them effectively:

  • Infographics and charts: Include visually appealing infographics and charts to present data or statistics concisely. These visual elements not only enhance the visual appeal of your content but also help reduce the number of words required to convey complex information.
  • Images and illustrations: Relevant images and illustrations can help break up text-heavy sections, add visual interest, and offer a better understanding to your readers. However, do ensure that your images are appropriately optimized to minimize their impact on page load times.
  • Captions and labels: When using visuals, use captions or labels to provide additional context or explanations. This will not only make your content more accessible but also contribute to the overall word count.

Remember, when using visual elements, it is vital to strike a balance between visual appeal and informative content. Utilize visuals strategically to enhance your content, not merely to meet page requirements.

Achieving The Desired Page Length

When it comes to writing, having the right page length is crucial. It is essential to know how many pages your content will be when you have a specific word count in mind. For instance, if you have a target of writing 4000 words, you might be wondering how many pages it will fill. Achieving the desired page length can be a challenge, but with the right tips and strategies, you can easily expand or condense your writing to fit your needs.

Tips On Expanding Or Condensing Your Writing

To meet the desired page length for your 4000-word document, consider the following tips:

  • Use descriptive language: When expanding your writing, add more detail to your sentences and paragraphs. This will provide a richer context and make your content more engaging for the readers.
  • Add relevant examples: To expand your writing, include real-life examples or case studies that support your points. These examples not only make your content more compelling but also help to reinforce your arguments and provide a deeper understanding for your audience.
  • Include supporting evidence: Adding supporting evidence such as statistics or expert quotes can help to further expand your writing. This not only adds credibility but also provides additional context and depth to your content.
  • Utilize headers and subheadings: Breaking your content into sections using headers and subheadings not only enhances readability but also gives you the opportunity to expand on each point. Use descriptive and informative subheadings to provide more information and details.

Editing For Clarity Vs. Page Count

When it comes to achieving the desired page length, it’s important to strike a balance between clarity and page count. Here are some considerations:

  • Readability: While it may be tempting to add unnecessary filler content to meet the desired page length, it’s essential to prioritize readability. Ensure that your content flows smoothly and makes sense to your readers. Focus on providing value and clarity rather than simply meeting a specific page count.
  • Eliminate redundant information: During the editing process, review your content to identify any redundant or repetitive information. Remove any unnecessary sentences or paragraphs that do not add value to your overall message.
  • Consider formatting: Adjusting the formatting of your content can also help to achieve the desired page length. For instance, using bullet points or numbered lists can break up the text and make it easier to read. Additionally, consider adding visuals such as images or charts to enhance the overall presentation of your content.
  • Seek feedback: It can be beneficial to have someone else review your work and provide feedback. They can help identify areas where your writing can be condensed or expanded to meet the desired page length while maintaining clarity.

A Latina Harvard grad advised women to marry older men. The internet had thoughts.

When she was 20 years old and a junior at Harvard College, Grazie Sophia Christie had an epiphany. She could study hard and diligently pursue her “ideal existence” though years of work and effort.

Or she “could just marry it early.”

Christie chose the latter.

In a column for New York magazine’s The Cut, the Cuban American editor and writer extolled the value of marrying an older, wealthier man as a shortcut to the life she desired. Christie’s March 27 story went viral, topping the magazine’s “most popular” list and inspiring hundreds of overwhelmingly negative comments online and on social media. As Miami New Times described it , “The essay hit the internet with a virtual thud heard round the world.”

Readers were taken aback by myriad aspects of Christie’s florid essay, which runs nearly 4,000 words. Though she was an undergraduate, Christie lugged “a heavy suitcase of books each Saturday to the Harvard Business School,” which she felt offered the best options for a suitable mate. “I had high breasts, most of my eggs, plausible deniability when it came to purity, a flush ponytail, a pep in my step that had yet to run out," she wrote. "Older men still desired those things.”

She crashed an event at the Harvard Business School and met her future husband when she was 20, and they married four years later.

Many readers were struck by the fact that Christie had the benefit of an elite education — she also completed a fellowship at Oxford University — yet chose to enter into an unequal marriage. “My husband isn’t my partner. He’s my mentor, my lover, and, only in certain contexts, my friend,” she writes. “I’ll never forget it, how he showed me around our first place like he was introducing me to myself. This is the wine you’ll drink, where you’ll keep your clothes, we vacation here; this is the other language we’ll speak, you’ll learn it and I did.”

Christie, now 27, writes that she enjoys time “to read, to walk central London and Miami and think in delicious circles.”

There is, Christie writes, a downside to her monied existence: “I live in an apartment whose rent he pays and that shapes the freedom with which I can ever be angry with him. He doesn’t have to hold it over my head, it just floats there, complicating usual shorthands to explain dissatisfaction.”

By marrying so young — although as many social media users pointed out, her husband is only 10 years older — Christie was able to leave a “lucrative but deadening spreadsheet job to write full-time, without having to live like a writer.”

A recurring theme in the viral response to Christie’s article, ostensibly about age-gap relationships, is that it should have been titled “The Case for Marrying a Rich Man.”

Christie’s transactional approach to marriage and relationships resonated — negatively — with readers. An online parody of her original piece has already been posted by the literary magazine McSweeney’s. Her words have been dissected by a columnist at Slate, who called it “bad advice for most human beings, at least if what most human beings seek are meaningful and happy lives.”

Online, people who commented on Christie’s essay called it “an insult to women of any age,” “a sad piece of writing,” and “pitiful in so many ways.”  Some readers wondered if the article was a satire or a joke. One of the kinder comments on New York magazine’s website said: “This is one of the most embarrassing things I have ever read. I am truly mortified for the writer.”

Christie has so far not responded to media requests for interviews, and several attempts by NBC News to contact her were unsuccessful. Her Instagram account was recently switched from public to private.

According to her personal website , Christie is editor-in-chief of a new publication, The Miami Native, “a serious magazine about an unserious city.” Her website’s bio page, which appears to have been disabled, previously stated that she was “writing a novel between Miami, London, sometimes France.”

Christie grew up in Miami. Her parents,  Miami New Times has reported , are prominent in Florida’s conservative Catholic community. Her mother was appointed to the state Board of Education in March 2022. A senior fellow for The Catholic Association, she hosts a radio show , “Conversations with Consequences,” on the Eternal Word Television Network. Her father is a physician and an anti-abortion activist who, according to his website , lectures regularly on Catholic social issues, particularly marriage, family, and the dignity of life.”

4000 word essay on one page

College professor gives his students the option of performing a 15-second DANCE in front of the entire class instead of writing a 15,000-word midterm paper - with hilarious results

A n assistant professor has allowed his students to choose between performing a 15-second dance or penning a 15,000-word paper, making for some hilarious submissions.

Mackenzie Greene, a student at the University of Tennessee  Knoxville's School of Journalism and Media, was taking a spring semester class with Assistant Professor Matthew Pitman.

In March, the assistant professor appeared to give students a choice in how to fulfil their midterm assignments: do a 15-second dance in front of the class, or write 15,000 words - a whopping 60 pages double-spaced - on the 'implications of AI  for biomedical engineering.'

The 49-second video was shared by Mackenzie on March 21, and has since racked up 8.8 million likes and more than 61 million views.

At the top of the clip, the assistant professor recapped his midterm guidelines.

'Okay class. Remember, you have two options for the midterm. Option one is a 15-second dance. Who chooses option one?' he prompted.

A single young woman in a pink, skirted athletic leotard raised her hand before heading to the front of the class.

She then executed a choreographed routine to the first 15 seconds of Blondie's Call Me - which included a jaw-dropping aerial cartwheel and headspring.

'Okay,' the assistant professor acknowledged of her efforts.

'Option two is a 15,000-word paper on the implications of AI for biomedical engineering.'

Shockingly, the vast majority of the class raised their hands, apparently opting to write the lengthy paper.

'The way only ONE person danced,' Mackenzie expressed in disbelief in the caption.

To be sure, the clip certainly had all the makings of a viral TikTok: an intriguing premise; a relatable POV, namely, a student in class contemplating midterms; an eye-catching dance routine - and, finally, with everything culminating in an unexpected twist further inciting disagreement and protest.

While Mackenzie did not give any indication as to whether the professor's offer was legitimate, rather than a form of social experiment, her video certainly got people talking online.

Indeed, many of the 112,000 comments were viewers expressing how emphatically they'd have danced in front of the class rather than doing the paper.

'15 second dance over a 15k page essay any day,' one top-voted comment declared.

'I would've been up there doing the dougie,' a second agreed.

'The Napoleon Dynamite dance would have come in handy for this moment,' a third chimed in.
