Why this resume works

  • The best way to do this is by making your points concise and highly relevant to the job to which you’re applying. If you include a  resume summary , tailor it to the business to which you apply. As a rule of thumb, the more you customize and  fine-tune your resume  for each job application, the more likely you are to get an interview.

Entry-Level Customer Service Resume

customer service summary on cv

  • Choose two tastefully contrasting fonts: one for your section headers, and one for your body text.
  • Leverage white space throughout your resume to give it a clean, easy-on-the-eye, professional feel.
  • We suggest bold (but not garish) colors in the header and titles to draw attention.
  • Say goodbye to excess white space by adding some relevant projects you’ve worked on.
  • Just make sure they relate to the  customer service job description  and emphasize your most relevant skills.

Customer Service Associate Resume

Customer Service Associate Resume Example with 5 years experience

  • Something very impressive on a  customer service associate resume  is when you’ve gone the extra mile to be certified. Definitely include any licenses or certifications you have in a dedicated “Certifications” section.
  • Our  user-friendly resume templates  and  Google Docs resume templates  allow you to quickly add a section just for certificates and licenses.
  • For example, “Handled an average of 40+ customer complaints per day with a 93% customer satisfaction rate.”

Customer Service Manager Resume

Customer Service Manager Resume Example with 9 years experience

  • Don’t worry though! You can easily tailor it by mentioning the specific job title you’re seeking, the company’s name, and any position-specific skills you’ve learned. If these kinds of details paralyze you, take a breath; now, start off your  resume-building  adventure with one of our  free resume templates  or  Google Docs interactive resumes  that already have sections laid out for your objective.
  • Though including a  resume objective  is optional, we recommend one if you’ve had a career change, are entry-level, or simply need to effectively fill a little space on your resume.
  • If you choose to add it, make sure it’s unique and personalized for every application you submit. That’s right. Every single one.

Customer Service Call Center Resume

Customer service call center resume example with telemarketing experience

  • It’s fine even if you mention them in other unrelated job roles. Just ensure that you clearly state how your assistance helped customers in a particular scenario.
  • If you run out of room in your resume, remember that a cover letter generator can help you expound quickly on the details you care about sharing.

Customer Service Bank Resume

Customer service bank resume example with 4 years of experience

  • Even if it’s only a short stint, mention how you went beyond resolving technical issues at a desk by adding your ability to make personalized follow-ups, maintain high-data accuracy rates, and implement any customer feedback provided.

Insurance Customer Service Resume

  • Remember that expertise in communication efficiency, accurate responses align well with the requirements of the role since you will be handling customers.

Client Service Manager Resume

Client service manager resume example with 11 years experience

  • And if you may, add your metrics on improving customer satisfaction to further prove your potential.

Customer Service Specialist Resume

Customer Service Specialist Resume Example with 10 years experience

  • Luckily, customer service is typically a metric-heavy role. From sales to customer reviews to retention, there’s a lot of numbers you can draw upon, such as customer satisfaction scores, how many customers you helped, and sales targets you exceeded.
  • Metrics draw the eye of the resume reader and increase the length of time they’ll review your  customer service specialist resume , which increases your likelihood of getting an interview. Since a hiring manager will, on average, spend six seconds reviewing your resume, hooking their attention quickly is key.

Retail Customer Service Clerk Resume

Retail Customer Service Clerk Resume Example with 2 years experience

  • The structure of your  retail customer service resume  can either help or hurt the flow of the employer’s reading experience and affect whether or not you get that interview.
  • We suggest you experiment with an array of  resume templates  and go for the one that zooms in on your greatest selling points.
  • Sprinkle in impressive numerical metrics such as team headcounts, sales targets met, and payment processing accuracy percentages whenever possible.

Customer Success Manager Resume

Customer Success Manager Resume Example with 10+ years experience

  • Challenge yourself to prove your impact with metrics.
  • For example, how much time did you save in labor hours? How much did you increase profits for the company? Provide any details that show how quickly you could boost numbers at the next business that’s smart enough to hire you.
  • Striking a good balance between hard and soft skills is tricky, but doable—the  skills section on your resume  can emphasize the soft skills that made those impressive numbers happen in the first place.

Bilingual Customer Support Resume

Bilingual Customer Support Resume Example with 7 years experience

  • For example, you can mention the number of reward program members you signed on, the number of customers you helped per shift, the number of performance-based awards you earned, and the percentage of bilingual clients who specifically returned to you for assistance.
  • Pass the automated tracking system filter by peppering your skills section with relevant keywords you’ve taken the time to mine from the  job description .
  • Just be sure the keywords you glean from the job description truly match the skills you possess! Better to be a master of a few talents than have a surface knowledge of many.

Customer Service Consultant Resume

Customer Service Consultant Resume Example with 20+ years experience

  • Having trouble breaking up with the roles you had in high school? You can save old positions in a separate document, just in case. Just reassure yourself that you can discuss this expertise during an interview.
  • Rather than cramming your work experience down to microscopic font size, try honing in on your most relevant work history.
  • Since you probably have plenty of experience, you may want to consider including a  resume summary , which can give a valuable overview of your skills and how they’ve driven results over the course of your lengthy (10+ years for a summary) career.

Customer Service Agent Resume

Customer Service Agent Resume Example with 7 years experience

  • As long as you’re not distracting from the content of your resume, go ahead and get a little creative.
  • Do this by  organizing your resume  into distinct sections (subheadings are your friend), and use an unexpected pop of color to draw on your personality. Who said your resume has to be boring?
  • Focus on adding hard skills, like Zendesk, Salesforce, and Microsoft Word.

Customer Service Success Specialist Resume

Customer Service Success Specialist Resume Example with 5 years experience

  • Hiring managers in the customer service field often have less than a minute to review your resume, so it’s important that you place the most relevant information where they’ll see it!
  • Emphasize growth in your career by ordering your work experience in a  reverse-chronological resume format , meaning that your most recent experience will be listed at the top of the page.
  • Including numbers in your work experience bullet points shows the employer that you’re great at your job! Ultimately, they’re looking for specialists who can perform the job well, and numbers prove that you can.

Customer Service Coordinator Resume

Customer Service Coordinator Resume Example with 8 years experience

  • That’s right. Your resume doesn’t need to look computer-generated to command respect. In fact, using a sprinkle of color can demonstrate your confidence and individuality, making you an even more appealing candidate.
  • A word of caution: While more companies are valuing the individuality and flair of applicants, there are times when toned-down colors (like deep navy, slate gray, or hunter green) may be more appropriate. This can be especially true if you’re applying to a larger corporate business. Determine what’s best by investigating the  customer service job description’s  work culture.

Customer Service Advisor Resume

Customer Service Advisor Resume Example with 13 years experience

  • Now, that doesn’t mean you need to bring the entire color wheel to your resume. Instead, focus on grabbing recruiters’ attention by using one or two colors for your section titles. You can start from scratch to find a visually-appealing color, or use a  resume template  if you’re not artistically inclined.
  • Take your resume personalization to the next step by adding a  career summary  section if you’re a total pro in the field with more than a decade of experience. Use this section for some humble bragging and tell hiring managers about your biggest accomplishments over the course of your career. Because if there’s any good time to brag, it’s on your resume, right?

Customer Service Technician Resume

Customer Service Technician Resume Example with 4 years experience

  • It’s surprisingly easy! Using hard numbers throughout your resume makes hiring managers slow down and read more carefully, plus using metrics supercharges your resume clout and indicates that you know your value (literally).
  • Don’t be afraid to highlight your  hobbies and interests on your resume .
  • But, please, please ensure you can relate them to the job. If you’re including a super interesting hobby, a hiring manager is almost certainly going to ask you all about it. You better 1.) actually do that hobby, and 2.) be able to relate that hobby to relevant customer service tech job skills.

Customer Service Representative Resume

Customer service representative resume example with 5 years experience

  • So, instead of simply adding ‘Sales’ as a skill in your customer service representative resume , use an example of where and how you used said skillset. Try, “Boosted high-end electronic sales by 34% through deep product knowledge and personalized demonstrations.”

Call Center Customer Service Resume

Call center customer service resume example with 5 years experience

  • Format your resume so that your most recent experience and achievements are at the top of your call center customer service resume . By doing this, you’re presenting those highlights in a way that they’re the very first thing a recruiter will probably look at.

Professional Customer Service Resume

  • Let’s say you have a Certified Customer Service Professional (CCSP) certification on your professional customer service resume—it immediately lets a potential employer know you’re well-equipped and ready to provide exceptional customer service.

Customer Service Supervisor Resume

  • If you know your way around a specific CRM or management software, don’t miss the opportunity to add it to your customer service supervisor resume and show an employer you’re a well-rounded candidate.

4 Tips to Improve Your Customer Service Resume Today

Recruiter points with yellow chalk to job skills and qualifications list on blackboard

Customer service resumes have gone beyond a simple list of experiences and education that prove your worth. Now, they’re as varied as the candidates themselves. Before writing a resignation letter and applying for your next job, check out BeamJobs’ list of recommendations to make your resume sound professional, look neat, and prove without a doubt that you’re the best candidate. We’ll cover:

  • Customer service skills
  • Formatting your customer service resume
  • Quantifying your previous impact
  • Customizing your resume for each job

customer service summary on cv

Tip 1: Confidently choose your customer service skills

The  skills section of a resume  might be short, but it packs a punch. This is where you sell what you’re capable of and what you can do. This section is especially important for ATS to keep you in the running, so it’s crucial to pay attention to what skills you possess.

You should list both hard skills (like Microsoft Office Suite, HubSpot, or HelpDesk) and soft skills (like organization, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication). The best place to find applicable skills would be the job description itself—see what’s required for the tasks listed, and then use those tasks to steer you in the right direction.

Let’s say you run across a  customer service job description  requesting bilingual support like this:

  • Answer telephone calls and emails promptly in Spanish and English
  • Maintain and extend client base through positive customer interaction
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in both Spanish and English
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Flexible—must be able to work independently AND with a team daily

Based on the job description, it’s clear this company values a bilingual, organized individual who is an effective communicator. These skills (as long as they accurately define you) should serve as the foundation of your skills section. And a word to the wise—don’t apply for a job if you can’t honestly say you own the skill set required.

Now, it’s time to tailor your skills section to the job description, which could look like this:

  • Bilingual (Spanish and English)
  • Organized
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Proven customer success
  • Empathetic
  • Methodical and thorough documentation
  • CRM (HubSpot)

Not every customer service job description will look like the one above, so your skills section should reflect the role for which you’re applying.

The following skills would be great additions to other customer service positions:

  • Data analysis
  • Metrics-driven
  • Customer service reporting
  • Self-motivated
  • Social media
  • Creative problem-solver
  • Inquisitive

Tip 2: Format your resume for the ATS and recruiters

When you open the pages of a book, what’s more inviting: dense blocks of text with little color or short paragraphs with headings, indents, and plenty of white space? The latter is easier to read and, thus, more inviting. Your customer service resume needs to follow the same principle since it’s your first impression. Make the recruiter’s job as easy as possible by being neat, easy to read, and understandable.

There are multiple ways to achieve this, but one of the easiest is to put things in  reverse-chronological format . This helps recruiters know immediately where you’re coming from. (For example, if you recently worked as a customer service representative, you’ll have a shorter adjustment period. And even if you were a customer service rep a few years ago, the reverse-chronological order will help recruiters quickly assess your qualifications.)

Further suggestions for keeping your resume easy to read:

  • Bullet points rely on keywords, essential for making your resume ATS-friendly. The condensed structure and repetitive points also relieve eye strain when reading.
  • Place the customer service title beneath your name to make it easier for the recruiter to keep that specific job in mind as they scan your resume. This is especially crucial when a company is hiring for multiple positions.
  • The average time a recruiter spends looking at a resume is six to seven seconds, which means you should only include necessities. Anything else that’s relevant can be brought up in the job interview.
  • Some companies see them as antiquated, but others like knowing exactly what you’re aiming for. Scan resumes in the job field to see if others include them, and consider reaching out to current employees on LinkedIn for advice.
  • Primarily, fancy icons or images may confuse the ATS. Beyond that, leaving them off your resume looks more professional; plus, it leaves room for more important things, like skills or awards.

Objective or summary for your customer service resume?

Objectives and summaries  are a hot topic for resumes. It’s up to you to decide if an objective or summary is needed for your customer service resume. Typically, objectives/summaries are a good idea if you’re changing careers, you’re an entry-level applicant, or if you want to customize them for each application. Otherwise, it would be best to leave space for other things.

The difference between objectives and summaries rests in their purpose and your level of experience. Both are roughly two to three sentences, but  an objective describes your interest and qualifications for the job while a summary highlights your past work . If you have limited experience, you should choose an objective to sell why you’re the best candidate, but if you’re years into customer service, you could include a summary to describe your unique background.

No matter if it’s a summary or an objective, it should always be concise, informative, and personal ; this is your chance to show your personality and skills before the interview, so make it count.

When you write your objective, communicate your reason for applying and why you’d make a great candidate. Avoid making it generic, flat, or too casual:

  • College graduate looking for work in the customer service industry to start a life-long career. I’m hardworking, great with people, and skilled with computers.

Instead, your objective should be specific, detailed, and unique to both you and the job description. Try something that highlights your skills regardless of your experience level:

Customer service resume objective

For those who have 10+ years of experience, a summary is the best way to go. Poor summaries have limited and vague information:

  • I’m a manager who is seeking further professional growth. I’m good at resolving conflicts, handling money, and writing reports; looking for a job that will give me experience and career options.

Rather, a summary should be a highlight reel of your accomplishments and expertise. To further showcase your talent, add metrics here, too:

Customer service resume summary

This summary is tailored to the position and outlines the candidate’s experience and skills while being personable and not too formal. By carefully crafting your objective or summary, you can rise above the competition in just two to three sentences.

customer service summary on cv

Tip 3: Leverage metrics on your customer service resume

Leveraging metrics is all about avoiding generality and demonstrating success. Most job description bullets don’t describe how successful, friendly, or efficient you were. However, saying, “Assisted 200+ customers weekly with technical questions with a 98% customer satisfaction rate,” tells the recruiter the specifics of your talents and abilities.

Writing metrics for every single bullet point isn’t necessary, but including an estimate when you can is better than staying vague.

Some customer service metrics to add to your resume include:

  • Customer satisfaction (CSAT) score: The core aspect of customer service is keeping customers happy, so providing high CSAT scores based on your interaction with customers is bound to get recruiters noticing.
  • Net promoter score: Just like the CSAT, this gives an insight into how happy customers are with the company.
  • Employee retention rate: This statistic works well if you’re in a management position with a tight-knit group. That means your leadership has a direct effect on how many customer service reps leave or stay.
  • Resolution rate: By showing a percentage of solved cases, you demonstrate your effective problem-solving skills and care for the customer.
  • Customer effort score: This shows how much effort it took to get an issue resolved. Less effort means you’re easier to work with and more effective, which is why a low CES score is useful to add to your resume.
  • Customer/employee numbers: Providing the number of teammates, employees, or customers you’ve helped or served is a great way to show your capability in helping large volumes of people.

Now that you know what kind of metrics to include, below are some examples of how you can use them in practice. If you have trouble calculating some of the aforementioned metrics,  HelpCrunch  or  Kustomer  have some helpful formulas.

  • Assisted over 250 patrons with technological questions monthly with a consistent 86 CSAT score based on interactions
  • Extended the client base through positive, empathetic communication, resulting in a net promoter score of over 50
  • Led a group of 20 employees through conflict resolution training, and updated onboarding processes that improved employee retention by 23%

Tip 4: Customize your customer service resume for the job

Just as every company is different, no customer service position is identical. So, why would you submit the same resume for multiple customer service job applications? Tailoring your resume shows you have researched the job and helps corroborate your candidacy.

Check the following list for advice on how to customize sections of your resume:

  • Mention the company by name and what you hope to accomplish. Check the “job details” section of the job description to see what the company hopes to achieve, whether it’s boosting customer loyalty or increasing customer satisfaction.
  • Many customer service jobs require similar skills, but that doesn’t mean your skills should stay stale. Check the job description’s qualifications to scan for skill keywords to use. Keep it under 10 to avoid being excessive.
  • Include the job description requirements in your resume as much as you can. If the job description says they’re looking for someone who will “standardize quality customer service through positive customer interactions,” mimic that wording on your resume to describe your past achievements. This helps make your resume ATS-friendly while highlighting your skills.
  • No matter the customer service role you’re seeking, there are many ways to  write your resume  so that it’s relevant and unique to every application:

Customer service resume

  • All of these are good ways to customize your job description points.
  • Include a concise objective that mentions the company by name, and highlight why you’re qualified for the job.
  • Have you assisted large volumes of customers or boosted overall customer numbers? Have you increased efficiency or used specific software discussed in the job description?

Customer service rep resume

  • Outcomes like increased sales or error reductions are great metrics to include.
  • Highlight skills like empathy, friendliness, and negotiation in your skills section and job description bullets.
  • Include your goals for your interactions with customers, like “established lasting relationships” to draw attention to your interpersonal skills.

Customer service manager resume

  • Use verbs like “directed,” “led,” or “modeled” to demonstrate productive leadership.
  • Include a summary to showcase the success of your career so far and what you can bring to your new job.

Entry-level customer service resume

  • For example, if you were a lab assistant, you had to be highly organized and a great problem-solver, which would work well in a customer service resume.
  • Stress your ability to work well with people—include any courses,  extracurricular projects , or volunteer efforts where you interacted with people consistently.

Retail customer service resume

  • Include past experience where you solved problems, troubleshot issues, or resolved disagreements.
  • Anything relating to product management would be an excellent addition—think of past jobs that dealt with marketing or sales, especially if you can provide metrics like increased revenue or reaching sales targets.

Customer success manager resume

  • CSMs must be able to see trouble coming and steer clear, so include responsibilities where you proactively and positively improved the customer’s experience.
  • Resilience and tenacity are two core elements of the customer success journey, so long-term projects and goals are solid additions to prove you’re willing to spend the time to get something done right.

Bilingual customer support resume

  • Include all languages in which you’re fluent in the skills section. Also, make sure to highlight your bilingual (or multilingual) abilities in your objective or summary.
  • Mention how you improved your customer service strategies or practices as this will show you actively make customer experiences better for everyone.

Customer service consultant resume

  • CSCs are also great advocates for both the customer and the company. They see things from both the customer’s perspective and the company’s, so keep your resume balanced between your advancements for the company and your success with customers.

The keys to your customer service resume

Resumes are your first impression, so it’s important you make a good one. By taking the extra time to customize and adjust your customer service resume, you’ll catch the eye of hiring managers. How to Write a Customer Service Resume Summary (Examples)

By Status.net Editorial Team on November 15, 2023 — 7 minutes to read

A customer service resume summary is a brief overview of your skills, experience, and strengths in the field. This section helps potential employers quickly grasp your abilities and determine if you’re a good fit for their organization.

Key Components of a Great Customer Service Resume Summary

Start with your title.

Choose a title that accurately represents your professional background in customer service. Some common titles include Customer Service Representative, Call Center Agent, or Front Desk Associate. Your title sets the tone for the rest of your summary, so be concise and clear.

Mention Your Experience

In your first sentence, talk about how many years you have been in the field and the types of industries or companies you have worked for. This will help establish your credibility and show prospective employers that you have experience in their specific industry.

For example, “With over 5 years of customer service experience in the retail and hospitality industries…”

Assert Your Skills

Highlight the most relevant skills for the customer service job you’re pursuing. Focus on a few key hard and soft skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and detail-oriented. Make sure to use specific examples or scenarios where you have demonstrated these skills.

For example, you could write, “Possess strong communication skills, proven through resolving customer complaints and helping callers find the right products and services.”

State Your Achievements

Finally, share some notable accomplishments from your customer service career. Use quantifiable data when possible to show the impact you have made in your previous roles. This could involve mentioning how you improved customer satisfaction ratings or handled a high volume of customer inquiries daily.

For example, “Increased client satisfaction by 20% in a previous call center position and consistently met performance metrics for handling 80+ calls per day.”

How to Write a Customer Service Resume Summary

To create an effective summary, follow these tips:

  • First, highlight your most relevant skills and experiences. Keep your focus on customer service-related positions and tasks. You can mention soft skills such as active listening, empathetic problem solving, and clear communication alongside technical skills such as proficiency in customer relationship management software or specific company tools. For example: “ Seasoned customer service professional with 5 years of experience working in fast-paced call centers. Expertise in resolving complex customer issues, utilizing CRM software, and maintaining high customer satisfaction ratings.”
  • Next, emphasize your accomplishments and any quantifiable results from your previous roles. Including concrete numbers, percentages, or any measurable improvement gives a clearer picture of your past success and hint at your potential. For example: “Reduced average call handle time by 20% and consistently achieved a 95% satisfaction rating in a high-volume customer support center.”
  • Don’t forget to tailor your summary to the specific job you’re applying for. Carefully read the job description and identify the most important requirements. Adapt your resume summary to showcase how your skills and experiences align with these key points. For example, if a job posting mentions the need for strong teamwork skills, you might add: “ Collaborative customer service expert with a talent for building relationships and fostering teamwork.”

Practical Examples of a Customer Service Resume Summary

When crafting a solid resume summary, focus on your achievements and skills that make you the perfect fit for a customer service role:

Friendly and empathetic customer service professional with 5 years of experience in high-volume retail settings. Proven track record in resolving customer complaints and increasing customer satisfaction rates by 20%. Strong multitasking and problem-solving skills, able to maintain a positive attitude under pressure.
Highly organized customer service specialist with a background in administrative support and 3 years of experience in a fast-paced call center. Proficient in CRM software, data entry, and providing timely responses to customer inquiries. Consistently recognized for excellent phone etiquette and dedication to customer satisfaction.
Energetic customer service representative with extensive experience in hospitality and tourism industries. Known for exceptional communication skills, handling difficult situations calmly, and swiftly resolving issues to enhance the guest experience. Bilingual in English and Spanish, effectively bridging the language gap for international customers.

Carefully tailor your customer service resume summary to the job description and highlight your most relevant qualifications. Using strong action words like “managed,” “assisted,” “coordinated,” or “improved” can give your resume an extra boost.

To make your resume stand out even more, consider adding a few numbers to showcase your achievements. For example, mention how you increased customer satisfaction ratings, reduced wait times, or helped the company generate more revenue.

Adjust your resume summary as needed when applying to different positions or industries, emphasizing the skills and achievements that best match the role you’re seeking. The more specific and tailored your resume summary is, the better your chances of catching the eye of a hiring manager.

Template for a Customer Service Resume Summary

1. Start with an adjective that describes you. Use a positive and descriptive term, such as “friendly” or “efficient.”

2. Mention your years of experience in customer service. If you have a substantial work history, specify the number of years. For example, “5 years of experience.”

3. Highlight your expertise or specialization. If you have an area of expertise within customer service, be sure to include it. For instance, “specializing in technical support” or “expert in retail customer care.”

4. Showcase relevant accomplishments or skills. Pick one or two notable achievements from your career that demonstrate your ability to excel in customer service. For instance, “resolved 95% of customer concerns within 24 hours.”

5. End with a targeted goal. Clearly state what you aim to achieve in your next role. For example, “seeking to provide exceptional support and grow with a fast-paced company.”

Putting it all together, your customer service resume summary might look something like this:

Friendly customer service professional with 5 years of experience specializing in technical support. Resolved 95% of customer concerns within 24 hours. Seeking to provide exceptional support and grow with a fast-paced company.

Now, it’s time to customize the template for your situation. Be true to your strengths and accomplishments, and tweak it to meet the specific requirements of the job you’re applying for. A well-written, tailored resume summary can be a powerful tool in landing that perfect customer service position!

Tips for Writing a High-Impact Summary

Use powerful words.

Choose strong action verbs to demonstrate your customer service skills. Instead of saying “worked with customers,” use “assisted,” “helped,” or “collaborated.” To show problem-solving abilities, use words like “resolved” or “troubleshooted.” This choice of words will create an impressive summary that grabs the reader’s attention.

Keep It Concise

Your summary should be brief and to the point. Aim for 3-4 lines that quickly highlight your most relevant skills and experiences. Avoid lengthy explanations, and instead focus on showcasing key customer service skills, such as communication, problem-solving, empathy, and multitasking.

Tailor It to the Job Description

Customize your resume summary by incorporating keywords and phrases from the job posting. Align your qualifications with the specific role you’re applying for to show that you are the perfect fit. For example, if the job description emphasizes the need for a friendly and patient demeanor, use those exact words in your resume summary. This will make your resume stand out to hiring managers and show that you understand the unique requirements of the position.

customer service summary on cv

By Mike Simpson

Do you know what the key to landing a new customer service job is? It’s making sure that your resume stands out from the pack.

Because, if your application doesn’t catch the hiring manager’s eye, you won’t move forward in the hiring process. It won’t matter if you have the customer service interview questions down pat, because you won’t have a chance to answer them.

Yes, that may sound a bit harsh, but there’s no need to panic. By creating a stellar customer service resume summary, you can highlight why you’re an exceptional candidate. You’ll be putting what makes you shine front and center, increasing the odds that the hiring manager will take notice.

So, whether you are applying to call centers , or trying to land a position with a retail giant like Walmart , Costco , or Home Depot , it’s vital to make your customer service resume summary outstanding. Don’t know where to begin? Don’t sweat it. We’ve got you covered.

What Is a Resume Summary?

Alright, before you talk about how you should write your resume summary , let’s talk about what one is. First, it’s different than a resume objective , which is a statement that you use to outline your career goals while highlighting certain capabilities. Those are best for people who are new to the workforce, transitioning into a new field, or lack applicable experience.

If you’ve worked in customer service roles before, your best bet is to go with a resume summary. This is a statement that sits at the top of your resume, showcasing the expertise you bring to the table. You are putting your most in-demand skills and experience on full display, ensuring the hiring manager doesn’t miss any of it.

But, wait, why do you need a customer service resume summary if all of that information is, well, in your resume? Doesn’t that make it redundant?

Technically, you’re right. You are rehashing some details that are already in your resume. The thing is, hiring managers are normally screening dozens (if not hundreds) of candidates. They aren’t reading your entire resume; they are skimming it, at best.

With a resume summary, you’re making sure that, at a glance, the hiring manager discovers the most critical details. You are making the process easier for them and increasing your odds of landing in the “to interview pile.” That’s why it’s wise to have one.

What Is Unique About a Customer Service Resume Summary?

Alright, now that you’re on board with including a customer service resume summary, let’s dig a little deeper. You have to figure out exactly what you need to highlight, ensuring you can craft an ideal overview of your capabilities.

One thing you need to realize is you only have a couple of sentences, max. Brevity is your ally. It forces you to focus, ensuring you get to the point quickly, and the hiring manager stays engaged.

Want to know how customer service summaries are different from other industries? Sure thing.

One stand out difference between a customer service resume summary and one for other fields is that “customer service” isn’t just a job type; it’s a specific skill. You need to make sure the bulk of your statement focuses on the core capabilities in that niche.

Additionally, you want to draw attention to the total amount of experience you bring to the table. Adding it all up is a must, allowing you to have an impressive number that the hiring manager can’t miss.

Common Mistakes When Writing a Customer Service Resume Summary

There are several resume summary mistakes that could derail your job search. Luckily, they are pretty easy to spot, so you can avoid them as long as you know what they are.

First, let’s start with a biggie. Failing to tailor your resume, including the summary, to the role is a big no-no. You want that snippet to be an attention-grabber, so it needs to speak to that hiring manager directly. If you want to make sure you nail it, try our Tailoring Method and see if that doesn’t make it a breeze.

Second, don’t get long-winded. We mentioned that brevity is important already, but it’s critical to reiterate. A giant block of text at the top of your resume is going to hurt your chances. No one wants to read that. Keep it to no more than three lines on the page (using a reasonable font size), and you should be in decent shape.

Finally, don’t forget to label your summary. A simple header lets the hiring manager know what they are about to read. Plus, it showcases that you included an overview of your professional experience. That way, if all they can do is skim your application, they know that it is a critical section that they actually need to read.

Top 3 Tips for Writing a Customer Service Resume Summary

Writing a stand out customer service resume summary doesn’t have to be a pain in the you-know-where. If you want to tackle it with ease, here are three tips that you can put to work right away.

1. It’s All About Value

Your summary should showcase your capabilities, sure. But it should also create an outstanding value proposition. You want to show the hiring manager what they gain by choosing you, ideally in areas that are incredibly relevant to the customer service job description .

2. Be Specific, B-E Specific

Ideally, your resume summary should be brimming with details. Include individual skills and specific achievements, not general overviews.

3. Embrace Action

Action verbs are powerful. They feel energetic, making your summary more engaging. Try to work in relevant, best-fit action verbs to make sure your statement really packs a punch.

3 Customer Service Resume Summary Examples

Okay, not you know what a customer service resume summary is, and have some helpful tips for crafting your own. What? Not ready yet? Think an example or two will really help you nail it? No problem!

If you don’t know where to begin with your customer service resume summary, here are three examples that may help.

Multi-tasking, people-oriented customer service professional with 9 years of experience behind the counter. Familiar with major POS systems and set previous store record for customers served, checking out 38 customers in a single hour.

How to Format a Customer Service Resume

Before you can serve the hiring manager, you need to organize your work station!

But what do we mean by this?

Well, just like your work station, your resume needs to be arranged in a way that doesn’t lead to confusion and delays.

Choosing the correct resume format allows the hiring manager to instantly see your most notable achievements, instead of having to hunt for them.

The most common resume format is “ reverse-chronological ”, and it is one that we always recommend to customer service representatives.

The following two resume formats also get our approval…

  • Functional Resume – If you’ve got the natural talent to help customers, but lack the hands-on experience, this resume format is recommended. A functional resume focuses on skills, which makes it ideal for those who lack experience or who have gaps in their employment history.
  • Combination Resume – Have previous experience in the customer service industry? Then you may want to use this format. Specifically, the format combines both “Functional” and “Reverse-Chronological”.

Use a Customer Service Resume Template

Right, time to fire-up your text editor and get typing!

But wait there.

Although great for creating simple files, there are better alternatives when creating a customer service resume.

You see, text editors don’t hold its structure, which can result in layout breakages.

Want to avoid an afternoon of headache? Use a customer service resume template. You can tailor any of the following resume templates for a customer service specialist resume.

What to Include in a Customer Service Resume

The main sections in a customer service resume are:

  • Work Experience
  • Contact Information

To really make an impression, you can also add these optional sections:

  • Awards & Certification
  • Volunteer Experience

Interests & Hobbies

So those are the customer service resume sections , but what do you write for each of them?

Let’s find out!

Want to know more about the different sections? View our guide on What to Put on a Resume .

How to Correctly Display your Contact Information

You should treat your contact section with the same care that you treat your customers.

Failure to do so could result in misspellings and wrong numbers, which makes it impossible for the recruiter to offer you an interview!

The contact information section on your resume must include:

  • Professional Title – Align this to the role you’re applying for, so “Customer Service Assistant”
  • Phone Number – Check each number carefully
  • Email Address – Keep your email professional ([email protected]), unlike that one from your childhood ([email protected]).
  • Location – City+Country
  • Optional - relevant social media
  • Joe Blogs - Customer Service Assistant. 101-358-6095. [email protected]
  • Joe Blogs - Customer Service Hero. 101-358-6095. [email protected]

How to Write a Customer Service Resume Summary or Objective

Establishments are always on the lookout for customer service representatives.

But this fact only makes competition more intense.

And with this in mind, we shouldn’t be surprised that recruiters spend just a few seconds on each resume.

If only there was a way to get the recruiter hooked and read through your whole resume?

Fortunately, you can this with a resume summary or objective .

As a customer service representative, you know that friendly introductions go a long way. Similarly, both resume summaries and objectives are short paragraphs that introduce your skills and experiences.

But what is the difference between a summary and an objective?

A resume summary is a 2-4 sentence summary of your most notable restaurant experiences and achievements.

  • Enthusiastic customer service representative with five years of retail experience responding to all manner of customer inquiries. Career highlights included being awarded “Employee of the Month” for 36 months out of 48 months and receiving 99% positive customer survey results at XYZ Convenience. Seeking a role at ABC Tech, where my service skills can be leveraged to achieve and maintain the highest level of customer service.

A resume objective is a 2-4 sentence snapshot of your goals and aspirations.

  • Passionate and hard-working student working towards graduating with a BA in History from UT Austin. Relevant experience includes serving customers in a campus bar. Eager to become the new customer service representative role at XYZ Tech to leverage interpersonal skills for the highest quality of service.

Got relevant work experience? Use a resume summary.

Got the skills, but can’t back it up with experience? Use a resume objective.

How to Make Your Customer Service Work Experience Stand Out

Recruiters hate nothing more than risk.

You see, their job is on the line if they hire the wrong person.

As such, you need to prove you have what it takes, and your work experience section is the easiest way to do that

Here’s the best way for customer service representatives to structure the work experience section:

  • Position name
  • Company Name
  • Responsibilities & Achievements

Customer Service Representative

YXZ Convenience Store

03/2017 - 04/2021

  • Achieved highest up-sell rates in both 2017 (2.8%) and 2019 (3.2%)
  • Worked at the customer information desk for 10+ hour shifts
  • Welcomed 1000+ customers during store opening event
  • Won “Employee of the Month” three months in a row by engaging with customers in personal, yet professional manner

The key here is to showcase how valuable you were to your previous employer. Doing so will have companies competing against each other for your skills.

Instead of saying…

“Spoke to all customers”

“Won “Employee of the Month” three months in a row by engaging with customers in personal, yet professional manner”

Simply put, the first sentence states that you spoke with customers, but it doesn’t say whether you were successful in doing so.

The second statement goes into more detail and backs-up your claims with awards.

What if You Don’t Have Any Work Experience?

Maybe you’re a student looking for their first customer service job?

Or maybe, you have experience in the field, but never in a retail environment?

Don’t worry, as there are ways to get around this.

All you need are the core job skills and a willingness to learn.

And you can showcase this with related job experience or school projects.

For example, if you’ve ever worked as a cashier, you can talk about any crossover skills and experiences. Just like a customer service representative, you were friendly, dealt with customers concerns, and operated a POS/computer.

Use Action Words to Make Your Customer Service Resume POP!

Let’s image that you’re a job recruiter.

Sitting down to read the same generic resumes, one after another.

No one stands out. In fact, all resumes are blending into one.

This exercise highlights the importance of making your resume different from the other applicants.

One of the best ways to do this is to use power words :

How to Correctly List your Education

After showcasing your experiences, you should delve into your education to date.

There’s no magic tricks with this section, just enter your education history in this format:

  • Degree Type & Major
  • University/School Name
  • Years Studied
  • GPA, Honours, Courses, and anything else you might want to add

High School Diploma

Lynbrook High School, California

Graduated 2018

Still concerned about your education section?

The answers below may help you:

What if I haven’t finished my current education yet?

  • No problem. Just mention your education to date

Should I include my high school education?

  • It’s recommended to only include your highest form of education. If that’s your high school diploma, then list it

What do I put first, my education or experience?

  • For a bartender role, your experiences always come first

Top 10 Skills for a Customer Service Resume

Whether you’re skilled enough to multi-task while on the phone or operate POS systems with ease, the recruiter is waiting to find out.

However… to keep your resume to one page, you can’t list every skill you own.

So, which skills don’t make the cut?

It comes down to looking at the job description to identify what the company wants from their new customer service representative.

Will the specific skill be beneficial to the company?

If so, list it!

For some inspiration, here are some of the best customer service resume skills:

Hard Skills for Customer Service Professionals:

  • Computer Skills
  • Mathematical Skills
  • Product Knowledge
  • Point of Sale (POS) Systems

Soft Skills for Customer Service Professionals:

  • Personable and friendly
  • Endurance (long hours)
  • Conflict resolution
  • Time management
  • Team player
  • The hiring manager will typically ask interviewees for examples of when they have shown the skill listed. As such, only include skills that you actually posses.

Here’s a more comprehensive list of 100+ must-have skills this year .

What Else Can You Include?

Ask yourself one question..

Is your resume the BEST it can be?

Although we have completed every essential resume section, we have to do everything it takes to win that interview.

Adding the following sections could be the deciding factor in whether you’re interviewed for the customer service representative role or not.

Awards & Certifications

Have you ever won an employee of the year (or month) award?

Have you completed any additional courses to expand your knowledge?

Whether it’s an award or certification, make space for this section if you have something that you’re proud of.

Here are some quick example:

  • Employee of the Year 2019 – XYZ Convenience
  • Learning How to Learn – Coursera Certificate

Applying to an establishment in China Town?

Then being fluent in Mandarin is a good way to shortcut your resume to the top of the pile.

Whether the job description requires it or not, being able to speak multiple languages is impressive – and no one can argue with that!

Rank the languages by proficiency:

  • Intermediate

Now, you may be wondering, “how does my love of animals affect my customer service skills?”

Well, it doesn’t.

But employers want customer service representatives who will fit in with the rest of the staff.

Your hobbies allow the hiring manager to see behind your qualifications and learn more about who you REALLY are.

Here’s which hobbies & interests you may want to mention.

Include a Cover Letter with Your Resume

As a customer service representative, you need to leave a positive impression.

Your application is no different.

And the best way to leave an unforgettable impression is to write a convincing cover letter.

You see, resumes give the vital information, but nothing speaks to a recruiter like a cover letter that delves deeper into who you are and why you want the job.

Here’s how to create a structure that works.

cover letter structure

You should complete the following sections:

Personal Contact Information

Include your full name, profession, phone number, email, and address

Hiring Manager’s Contact Information

Include their full name, position, location, email

Opening Paragraph

To hook the hiring manager, the start of your resume needs to pack a punch. Use concise language to mention:

  • The position you’re applying for
  • Your experience summary and best achievement to date

Once you’ve sparked the hiring manager’s interest, you can delve further into the following specifics:

  • Why you chose this specific establishment
  • What you know about the establishment’s culture
  • How your skills will be beneficial to the establishment
  • If you have worked in similar industries or positions before

Closing Paragraph

Avoid ending the conversation abruptly, you should:

  • Conclude the main points of your letter
  • Thank the hiring manager for their time and the opportunity
  • End with a call to action. This is a good way to continue the conversation further. A simple “At your earliest opportunity, I’d love to discuss more about how I can help XYZ with...” will work.

Formal Salutations

Although this letter shows your personal side, the letter should end professionally. Use something like, “Kind regards” or “Sincerely.”

Key Takeaways

You know your customer service skills are good enough to get the job.

And if you follow the above advice, the recruiter will know that too!

  • The resume format needs to suit your specific situation. Prioritize the reverse-chronological format, and then follow the content layout tips
  • Use an attention-grabbing resume summary or objective

Customer Service Resume FAQ

Customer Service resume example

Crafting a compelling customer service resume can be challenging, particularly when trying to effectively showcase your achievements. Fortunately, this in-depth resume writing guide is here to help you create a remarkable customer service resume. In this article, you'll gain insights into:

  • A proven, ready-to-use example from a successful resume
  • Detailed guidance for each vital section of your resume
  • Adapting your resume to the job description using ATS-friendly formatting

Follow these tips to make a resume that highlights your unique value.

How to make your customer service resume

As you continue on your journey towards creating the perfect customer service resume, it's essential to understand how to format, design, and write it effectively.

How to format your customer service resume

To optimize your resume for ATS and readability, consider the following formatting tips:

Save your resume as a PDF to ensure consistent formatting across different devices and platforms. Read more about file format options .

How to design your customer service resume

A well-designed resume can help you stand out from the competition. Keep in mind that ATS won't parse icons, backgrounds, or photos, but it won't have issues with parsing the actual text content of your resume. Consider these design tips:

  • Font type and size: Although ATS can read any font, stick to professional resume fonts like Rubic, Arial or Calibri, and use a font size between 10 and 12 points.
  • Colors: Add a touch of personality to your resume with subtle resume colors , but avoid using more than two colors to maintain professionalism.
  • Backgrounds: Keep backgrounds simple and clean, with minimal or no graphics to avoid distracting from the content.
  • Icons: Including icons on your resume can help draw attention to specific sections, but use them sparingly and ensure they're professional and relevant.
  • Photo: While not required, adding a resume photo can help personalize your resume. Opt for a high-quality, professional headshot.

Customize your resume design to match the company's branding and color scheme to show that you're a great fit for their team.

How to write each section of your customer service resume

In this part of the guide, we will explore how to write each section of your customer service resume, complete with good and bad examples, and a checklist of what to include. Let's dive into a step-by-step process for creating a standout resume.

A business absolutely devoted to service will have only one worry about profits. They will be embarrassingly large.

Step #1. Add your contact information and more in the customer service resume header

A well-crafted resume header is crucial for providing potential employers with your correct contact information. Make sure to include the following details in your header and consider our recommendations for each point:

  • Your first name and last name: Use your full name to ensure professionalism and avoid any confusion.
  • Your resume headline : Create a clear and concise title that highlights your expertise in customer service.
  • Your phone number: Include a reliable contact number where potential employers can reach you.
  • Your email address: Use a professional email address (preferably with your name) to convey credibility.
  • Your address or location : Specify your city and state, or country if applying internationally, to show employers where you are based.
  • LinkedIn on your resume (optional): Adding your LinkedIn profile can showcase your professional network and online presence.
  • Other relevant social media handles (optional): Include any additional platforms that demonstrate your customer service skills or industry knowledge.

What's bad about this example:

  • Using a hotmail email address may seem unprofessional.
  • No LinkedIn or other relevant social media handles provided.

What's good about this example:

  • Providing a professional email address and LinkedIn profile demonstrates credibility and professionalism.

Step #2. Create an impactful customer service resume summary

A compelling summary is essential for customer service resumes, as it showcases your professional strengths and leaves a lasting impression on recruiters.

When crafting your summary, make sure to include the following key elements:

  • Your title and years of experience : Mention your current or most recent job title and the number of years you have been in the field to establish your expertise.
  • The most relevant skills in your field : Highlight the top skills that are most relevant to customer service roles to demonstrate your ability to excel in the position.
  • Your top 1-2 professional achievements : Showcase your most impressive accomplishments to set you apart from other candidates.

A well-written summary benefits both the ATS and the recruiter because:

  • It provides extra space for incorporating keywords from the job description, which helps your resume pass through ATS filters.
  • It's easy to read, allowing recruiters to quickly grasp your professional profile summary.

To ensure your summary section is ATS-friendly, name it "Summary" or "Professional Summary."

What’s bad about this example

  • Vague job title : The candidate doesn't specify their exact role in customer service.
  • Lack of quantifiable experience : No mention of years of experience or the level of expertise.
  • Generic skills : Only mentions being "good at talking to people," which is too general.
  • Absence of achievements : Fails to provide any specific accomplishments or quantifiable results.
  • Unfocused and informal : The summary is written in an informal tone and lacks clarity and focus.

What’s good about this example

  • Specific job title : Clearly states the candidate's position as a "Customer Service Specialist."
  • Quantifiable experience : Provides the number of years of experience (5+ years) to demonstrate expertise.
  • Relevant skills : Highlights important skills like conflict resolution and communication.
  • Professional achievements : Includes quantifiable achievements such as increasing customer satisfaction by 20% and training a team of 15 representatives.
  • Concise and focused : The summary is brief, to the point, and easy to read.

Step #3. Build an experience section for your customer service resume that outshines other candidates

A well-presented work experience section with quantified achievements is crucial for your resume, as it showcases your relevant expertise and successes in a clear, structured manner.

When crafting the experience section, keep the following essentials in mind:

  • ATS-friendly section name : Name the section "Work Experience" or "Professional Experience" to ensure it's easily recognized by the ATS.
  • Reverse chronological order : List your most recent job first, followed by previous positions in reverse chronological order.
  • Job title : Clearly state your position held at each company.
  • Company's name, location, and description : Include this information to provide context for the recruiter.
  • Date of employment : Use a consistent date format for all positions, as this is important for ATS readability.
  • Achievements and responsibilities : Focus on a few bullet points per job, detailing your most relevant accomplishments and duties.
  • Number of jobs : Limit the number of positions listed to the most relevant and recent ones.
  • Relevancy of the experience : Prioritize including experience directly related to the job you're applying for.
  • Employment gaps : Address any gaps in your employment history and provide a brief explanation if necessary.

Incorporating these elements will ensure your work experience section effectively highlights your professional background, making it both ATS- and recruiter-friendly.

Create one good and one bad example and explain why they are good or bad. You can reuse the existing ones from the guide you’re updating, too.

  • • Answered customer calls.
  • • Helped customers with their problems.
  • • Trained new employees.
  • Lack of quantifiable achievements : The example doesn't provide any measurable results or specific accomplishments.
  • Vague job title : The candidate's position is not clearly defined, making it difficult to determine their role and level of expertise.
  • Generic responsibilities : The listed duties are too general and do not demonstrate the candidate's unique skills or contributions to the company.
  • • Boosted customer satisfaction ratings by 20% through efficient conflict resolution and personalized service
  • • Trained and supervised a team of 15 customer service representatives, improving overall team performance by 25%.
  • • Implemented a new CRM system that reduced average response time by 35% and increased customer retention by 10%.
  • Quantifiable achievements : The example provides measurable results, showcasing the candidate's effectiveness.
  • Relevant experience : The job title and responsibilities directly relate to the customer service field.
  • Specific details : The example includes specific actions taken and their positive outcomes, demonstrating the candidate's skills and abilities.

Step #4. Make a strong customer service resume education section

A well-crafted education section is crucial for customer service resumes, as it showcases your qualifications and demonstrates your commitment to learning and growth. Consider these essential elements when presenting your education:

  • Degree Name: Clearly state the name of your degree or certification, making sure to highlight relevant coursework (see our guide on how to address coursework on your resume ).
  • University, college, or other institution: Mention the name of the educational institution where you obtained your degree.
  • Location (optional): You may include the location of the institution, but this is not mandatory.
  • Years attended: Indicate the years you attended the institution, especially if you completed your degree recently.
  • • Coursework: Customer Relationship Management, Sales and Negotiation, Communication Skills
  • Relevant degree : The "Bachelor of Science in Business Administration" degree is relevant to customer service positions.
  • Institution and location : The name of the university and its location are clearly provided.
  • GPA : The impressive GPA of 3.8 is included, showcasing the candidate's academic performance.
  • Date range : The attendance years are presented, giving context to the applicant's educational timeline.
  • Coursework : Relevant coursework (Customer Relationship Management, Sales and Negotiation, and Communication Skills) is highlighted, demonstrating the candidate's focus on customer service-related subjects.

Step #5. List your relevant customer service resume skills

A well-rounded skill set is crucial for customer service resumes, as it showcases your ability to excel in various aspects of the role. Here's a checklist to ensure your skills section stands out:

  • Name the section appropriately for ATS: Use a clear title like "Skills" or "Core Competencies" for easy recognition by ATS.
  • List hard skills: Mention relevant hard skills , such as computer proficiency or CRM software knowledge, to highlight your technical capabilities and align with ATS requirements.
  • List soft skills: Include essential soft skills , like communication, problem-solving, and empathy, to demonstrate your interpersonal abilities and appeal to both ATS and recruiters.
  • Match skills to the job description: Carefully review the job description and tailor your skills section to match the required qualifications, ensuring a higher likelihood of passing ATS and impressing recruiter.

Example how to show soft skills on your resume. If prompting with ChatGPT, ask it to:

List 3 relevant soft skills for customer service resume in the following JSON format below. Make sure that in the description, you showcase actual work experiences with relevant examples and work situations.

Step #6. Add extra sections to your resume

Including personal sections in your customer service resume can showcase your cultural fit and make you stand out. Here are some examples of relevant sections to add:

  • Certifications: Include any relevant certifications or training courses you've completed, such as customer service, communication, or conflict resolution programs. This demonstrates your commitment to developing the skills necessary for success in the field.
  • Awards and Achievements: Highlight any awards or recognitions you've received for outstanding customer service, problem-solving, or teamwork. This can help to showcase your accomplishments and make you stand out as a candidate.
  • Volunteer Experience: If you've participated in volunteer work that involved customer service, communication, or teamwork, include these experiences to demonstrate your dedication to helping others and working in a team-oriented environment.
  • Languages : If you speak multiple languages, include this information on your resume. Bilingual or multilingual skills can be an asset in customer service roles, particularly if the company serves a diverse customer base.
  • Soft Skills: Customer service roles often require strong soft skills, such as active listening, empathy, and adaptability. You can create a separate section to emphasize these traits, using examples from your work, educational, or volunteer experiences to illustrate your proficiency.
  • Relevant Hobbies or Interests : Including hobbies or interests that demonstrate your ability to connect with others, such as community involvement, team sports, or public speaking, can help showcase your interpersonal skills.
  • Testimonials or References : If you have positive feedback from previous employers, colleagues, or customers, consider including a few short quotes or references on your resume. This can help to provide social proof of your customer service abilities.

Customize the additional sections in your resume according to the company culture and values. Research the organization and align your personal interests or experiences with its mission and vision to make a lasting impression.

Step #7. Finalize your customer service resume

Before finalizing your resume, make sure to follow these essential steps for a polished and professional result:

  • Carefully proofread and edit your resume to ensure it's free of errors and effectively communicates your skills and experience.
  • Save your resume in a format that is easily accessible and compatible with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), such as a PDF .
  • When sending your resume via email, make sure to craft a professional and engaging message .

Step #8. Create a customer service cover letter to show your extra effort

A cover letter serves as a crucial component of the job application process, allowing you to showcase your unique qualifications, experiences, and motivations for applying to a particular position. It provides an opportunity to elaborate on your resume and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role, while also allowing the hiring manager to get a glimpse of your personality and communication style.

When crafting your cover letter, be sure to include the following elements:

  • Contact information that corresponds with the resume.
  • Achievements in the first paragraph.
  • Work experience
  • Why you'd be a good fit
  • Call to action

Here's a sample cover letter for a customer service position at a relevant company:

The above example CV should give you a good idea of how a customer service CV should look , and the type of information it should contain.

Now, I will explain how you can create your own CV tailored to your unique situation.

Structuring your customer service CV

The structure of your CV is extremely important because it will determine how easy it is for recruiters and employers to read your CV, and find the information they need.

A simple and logical structure will always create a better reading experience than a complex structure.

The infographic below gives a basic outline of how you should structure your CV, along with a few pointers on formatting and style.

How to write a CV

CV structure summary

Add your contact details to the very top of your CV to ensure that recruiters can’t miss them when they want to call you in for an interview .

Head your CV up with an eye-catching profile that gives readers a nice summary of your abilities and acts as an elevator pitch.

List your work experience (this could also be voluntary work, placements or school projects if you don’t have any experience yet) in reverse chronological order.

Finish your CV by detailing your education along with any technical skills and vocational qualifications .

Some formatting tips..

  • Keep your CV looking professional and easy-to-read by using a clean simple font along with a plain colour scheme.
  • Break text up as much as possible to create the best reading experience for recruiters.
  • Keep your CV under two pages in length to provide enough detail to impress readers without boring them.

Writing each section of your CV

Now, I will walk you through each section of your CV, and explain what content needs to be entered when writing it .

Name and contact details

Sitting at the very top of your CV, your name and contact details should take up minimum space on the page.

CV contact details

You should include…

  • Your mobile telephone number so that recruiters can contact you quickly.
  • Your email address – tip: use a professional sounding email address, and not an embarrassing one from your school days – [email protected] is fine, [email protected] is not.
  • Your location such as Liverpool/Leeds/London

But you don’t need to include…

  • Your full address – it’s too much information at this stage
  • Your date of birth – hiring decisions are not based on age
  • A photograph – Employers do not need to know what you look like – only what skills you have

If you want to hold recruiters’ attention, and really wow them when they open your CV, you must write a punchy profile at the top.

A profile is an introductory paragraph which highlights all of your most important skills and knowledge for customer service roles.

Here is an example:

Customer service CV profile

The type of things employers will want too see in your profile are:

  • What kind of customer service skills do you have? Communication , product knowledge, interpersonal skills etc.
  • What type of companies have you worked for? Retailers? Restaurants?
  • What relevant qualifications do you have?

Use positive persuasive language throughout your profile and really sell yourself – don’t be afraid to brag a little.

Core skills section

A great way to ensure that recruiters don’t skip past your CV, is to add a core skills section.

A core skills section is simply a bullet pointed list split over two or three columns which reiterates your most valuable skills. It creates a snapshot of your abilities so that recruiters can get an instant idea of your offerings within seconds of opening your CV.

Core skills

You can also swap these points around if you need to tailor your CV for a specific role.

For example a clothing store customer service role might require slightly different skills to an insurance call centre role, so you’d need to adapt your core skills accordingly.

Work experience

Detailing your work experience gives you a great opportunity to showcase your ability to apply your skills and knowledge in the workplace.

If you already have some customer service experience then great, you should try to highlight as much of it as possible in this section.

If you don’t have any direct work experience, that’s fine – you can also include unpaid experience such as volunteering , school work placements and even extracurricular activities here. Just include anything that will demonstrate that you have the necessary skills.

You should list your experience from latest role to oldest role, like this.

CV order

Structuring and writing your role descriptions

To prove your value as an employee, it’s vital that your roles are easy-to-read, well written, and demonstrate a broad range of customer service skills .

This example of a role description, gives you an overview of how your roles should be laid out.

Role description

Basic CV template

Now, let’s take a closer look at what should be included in each section.

Outline/Intro

The first line of your role descriptions should set the scene for readers and allow them to quickly understand who you work for (a small retailer? A big airline?), what environment you work in (shop floor? Call centre?) and what the overall aim of your job there is, in relation to serving customers.

“Customer facing role for global clothing retail chain working across 2 busy stores, ensuring all customer needs are met and driving sales of all products”

Responsibilities

List your responsibilities within your roles in short bullet points, so that busy recruiters can quickly skim through them. Detail all aspects of your role, and try to showcase as much of your customer interaction as possible. I will talk about the skills that customer service employers look for in a CV in the next section.

  • “Serving customers at the till, processing transactions and dealing with enquires”
  • “Handling complaints and resolving issues to ensure positive outcomes for the store and customers”
  • Performing haircuts , shampoos and colours for female customers

Achievements

A really good customer service CV should contain plenty of impressive achievements that show you have gone the extra mile to help your customers and employers. Tag some achievements on to the end of your role descriptions to show recruiters the impact you make – and try to include numbers where possible

  • “Resolved 95% of all allocated complaints within 4 day target timeline and won best barista of the month”
  • “Sold over 300 units of luxury goods and awarded top regional sales award”

What do employers look for in a customer service CV?

Most businesses and public sector organisations require customer service staff, but there is an especially big demand within B2C organisations such as retailers, insurance firms, restaurants and leisure services etc.

Customer service requires a broad range of skills, here is a list of the most important ones that employers will expect to see in your CV.

  • Meeting and greeting – The ability to make customers feel welcome and comfortable is essential in a customer facing role and extremely important to a company’s reputation.
  • Transaction processing – Whether you take card details over the phone or handle cash over a till, dealing with customer transactions is a valuable skill.
  • People skills – Customer service roles revolve around the customer, so it makes sense that your CV should showcase your ability to deal with people positively.
  • Complaint handling – Unfortunately complaints will arise in any customer service role – but if you can demonstrate your ability to handle them well, and create effective resolutions for both the customer and employer, it will look great on your CV
  • Sales – Customer service staff are on the front line of any company’s sales, so good sales skills are vital.
  • Product knowledge – Customers will often have questions to ask before making a purchase, and a good customer service agent will have the ability to familiarise themselves with their employer’s products, and give out sound advice .
  • Communication – written and verbal communication between customers colleagues and managers are required frequently in customer service work.
  • Team work – Serving customers is a team effort, so give some examples of your ability to work within teams in your CV.

Education & qualifications

Education

Add your education and qualifications to the bottom of your CV for completion. You should add your formal education such as:

As well as any specific customer service qualifications such as an NVQ in customer service.

Skills and experience tend to be more important in customer service environments, so there’s no need to go into much detail in your education section.

Interests and hobbies

Hobbies

Your hobbies and interests outside of work are an optional section and won’t always make a huge difference in a hiring decision.

However, there are two situations where they can influence a recruiter’s decision.

a) You have no experience

To compensate for a lack of work experience, you can use your interests as a means of showcasing your relevant skills. For example if you captain a sports team, that can demonstrate leadership, motivation and communication skills.

b) You have highly relevant interests

If you have interests outside of work that are directly related to customer service, then it’s definitely worth including them. For example, you might volunteer at a local event which requires you to deal with the public and utilise lots of customer service skills.

If you have popular interests such as eating out and going to the cinema, they are unlikely to have a big effect on a recruiters decision to call you – so keep them brief or omit them completely.

Finalising your customer service CV

Once you’ve used this guide to create your customer service CV, you should proofread it several times to ensure that there are no typos or grammatical errors. Nothing will scare off an employer more than a CV full of sloppy mistakes – it’s your professional marketing document, so it needs to be flawless.

With a punchy profile that really sells your most valuable talents, and well written role descriptions that are tailored to showcase customer service skills, you should have a winning customer service CV at your disposal.

You may also be interested in our waiter/waitress CV example .

Applying for roles

Once you have created your CV, don’t stop the hard work there.

Apply for plenty of customer assistant roles across the job websites, company career pages and LinkedIn. Maybe even set yourself a daily or weekly application target to ensure you stay on track.

To save time, create a cover letter template to use when sending applications. Don’t be deterred if you don’t get many responses to start with, keep preserving and adapting from feedback until you start seeing results.

Our Ranking Methodology for Best Resume Writing Services

To comprehensively and objectively rank the top resume writing services, it is essential to have a thorough methodology. The first step in this process was conducting extensive research and analysis. This involved gathering a comprehensive list of reputable resume-writing services from multiple sources such as online searches, customer reviews, industry directories, and personal recommendations.

  • Feature analysis: Evaluate the functionalities provided by each resume builder, considering elements like template variety and quality, customization flexibility, user-friendly editing and formatting options, import/export capabilities, spell check and grammar tools, and integration with job search platforms and professional networks.
  • Template collection: Examine the assortment and quality of templates. Look for a wide range that suits various industries, job levels, and design preferences, considering these templates’ aesthetics, readability, and contemporary design.
  • Editing and customization: Scrutinize the adaptability and user-friendliness of the editing and customization tools each resume builder provides. Assess the capacity to add or modify sections, reorganize content, and tailor resumes to specific job requirements.
  • User interface and experience: Analyze the user interface and the overall user experience each resume builder offers. Evaluate the ease of navigation, instruction clarity, guidance or prompts, and the platform’s responsiveness.
  • Integration with job search platforms: Determine whether resume builders offer seamless integration with popular job search platforms and professional networks like LinkedIn or ATS systems. Consider how well the resumes can be transferred and their compatibility with these platforms.
  • Additional resources: Evaluate if the resume builders provide extra resources such as sample resumes, tools for creating cover letters, interview tips, or career advice. Consider the breadth and practicality of these supplementary resources.
  • Mobile-friendliness: Gauge the mobile-friendliness and responsiveness of the resume builders, recognizing the growing trend of mobile job searching and application processes.
  • Customer support: Reflect on the accessibility and quality of customer support services, encompassing options like live chat, email support, or knowledge bases. Assess the responsiveness and helpfulness of the support team.
  • Pricing and value for money: Appraise the pricing plans presented by the resume builders in terms of the value they offer based on features, usability, and overall service quality.
  • Industry reputation: Consider the standing and trustworthiness of the resume builders, considering factors such as awards, recognition, partnerships, and user feedback from reputable sources.

Buyer’s Guide: Why Use a Resume Builder?

Crafting a well-crafted CV comes naturally to particular job seekers. However, even the most seasoned experts may need help in resume writing. If you find yourself in need of help with creating a compelling resume, here are several ways in which the best online resume builder can be beneficial:

Resume builders provide users with pre-designed templates and helpful tips, streamlining the process of writing a resume and alleviating stress.

Offers Writing Tips

Promoting oneself requires considerable effort. Only some people possess writing skills, even if they enjoy self-promotion. To showcase one’s experience and knowledge effectively, a resume builder can help select the most appropriate words and phrases.

Improves Design

In every field, there are unique standards for an impressive resume. If you need to gain knowledge in design or the tools, resume builders can provide free templates to enhance your resume’s visual appeal and quality.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

Recruiters often use ATS systems to scan resumes. A good resume builder will help with formatting to ensure that your resume is easy for these systems to read.

What’s the Best Resume Builder?

The ideal resume builder for each individual may differ according to their specific requirements. If you prefer a tool that offers step-by-step guidance in creating your resume, we suggest using a builder that provides helpful tips and recommendations. If you prefer a resume builder that auto-generates a summary, we recommend using a tool that extracts information from your LinkedIn profile.

For those who enjoy having creative control over their resumes, we suggest using a platform with features. By selecting the resume builder that aligns with your needs and suits your industry and personal style, you’ll significantly increase your chances of capturing the attention of hiring managers.

Resume Builder vs. Resume Writing Service: What Matters for You

When it comes to crafting a resume, there are three options available. You can opt to create it independently, use a resume builder tool, or enlist the services of a professional resume writer. Your best choice will depend on your writing abilities, available time, and financial resources.

Do-It-Yourself

You have the choice to construct a resume entirely by yourself. The benefit of this option is that it costs nothing but requires a significant amount of effort. Along with composing all the information, you must possess graphic design skills.

This approach works well if you have these abilities, but with them, your options for creating a resume are unlimited. To overcome this limitation, you can use a resume builder or enlist the help of a resume writing service.

Resume Builder

A tool for creating resumes allows you to input your details into a template, resulting in an original appearance and layout with no design work. The top resume building tools also offer suggestions on enhancing your resume and tailoring it to match the specific job you are applying for.

While you are still responsible for writing the content, once it is written, you can quickly transfer that information into any other template with just a few simple clicks. Some of these services are free and many like to promote themselves as such, but most require a small payment to download your finished resume.

Professional Resume Writing Service

Professional resume writing services are expensive, but they offer the convenience of handling all the work for you. An experienced writer will gather relevant information about your background and transform it into a unique and engaging resume.

The process typically takes a few days, and the level of originality in the outcome largely relies on your choice of company and writer. However, we will not delve into these services further in this guide.

Are Resume Builders Worth It?

Definitely, without a doubt. An effective resume creator will guarantee that your CV is formatted correctly to navigate Applicant Tracking Systems and ultimately reach the hands of recruiters.

Is It Unprofessional to Use a Microsoft Word Resume Template?

Relying on a template will not set you apart, and there is a high likelihood that your application will be dismissed because your resume is identical to those of other job seekers.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right resume builder is crucial in today’s competitive job market. Creating a professional and impactful resume that stands out from the crowd can significantly impact your job search. With the right tool, you can save time, improve your chances of landing an interview, and ultimately secure your dream job.

When selecting a resume builder, consider your specific needs and priorities. Look for features like customizable templates, industry-specific examples, and the ability to export your resume in different formats. Consider user reviews and ratings to ensure you choose a reputable and reliable platform.

Remember, an exceptional tool for crafting resumes should give you the power to present your skills, experience, and accomplishments effectively. It should simplify and expedite creating a resume without hassle. Investing in a reliable resume builder is investing in your professional future.

Therefore, explore the different options available for resume builders. Test out their free trials or demos and choose the best fit for your objectives. Our top recommendation is Super Star Resume . This meticulously designed resume can open doors to exciting career prospects and be a dependable companion on your journey toward success.

AT&T outage caused by software update, company says

AT&T says they have "restored wireless service to all our affected customers."

A temporary network disruption that affected AT &T customers in the U.S. Thursday was caused by a software update, the company said.

AT &T told ABC News in a statement ABC News that the outage was not a cyberattack but caused by "the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network."

"We are continuing our assessment of today’s outage to ensure we keep delivering the service that our customers deserve," the statement continued.

The software update went wrong, according to preliminary information from two sources familiar with the situation.

Sources have told ABC News that there was nothing nefarious or malicious about the incident.

The outage was not caused by an external actor, according to a source familiar with the situation. AT &T performs updates regularly, according to the source.

In an earlier statement to ABC News, AT &T said some customers were "experiencing wireless service interruptions" and advised them to make calls over Wi-Fi.

The company issued an update later Thursday afternoon saying that its network had been fully restored.

"We have restored wireless service to all our affected customers. We sincerely apologize to them. Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future," the company said in a message on its website.

Two sources briefed on the situation told ABC News that the FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), among other agencies, had been urgently investigating to determine whether the AT &T outage was the result of a cyberattack or a hack, or simply some sort of technical malfunction.

As of 5 a.m. ET, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) reported, according to a confidential memo obtained by ABC News, that "the cause of the outage is unknown and there are no indications of malicious activity." CISA is an agency within DHS tasked with monitoring cyber threats.

The FCC has been in touch with AT &T to figure out what caused the outage, according to National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby.

Kirby told reporters Thursday afternoon that DHS and the FBI were looking into the outage as well and working with the tech industry and network providers to see what can be done "from a federal perspective to enhance their investigative efforts to figure out what happened here."

"The bottom line is we don't have all the answers," he said. "We're working very hard to see if we can get to the ground truth of exactly what happened."

Several police departments and municipalities warned local residents of what they described as a nationwide outage. In turn, officials urged callers to contact emergency services by alternative means.

"There is a nationwide AT &T outage that is preventing wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 9-1-1)," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, which serves the Charlotte, North Carolina area, said in a post on X.

The county government in Fairfax, Virginia, released a similar warning.

"There is a nationwide AT &T outage that is preventing wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 9-1-1)," the Fairfax County Government said on X. "Try calling from a landline or ask a friend or family member to call 9-1-1 on your behalf."

In response to an earlier request from ABC News, CISA said they had no comment on the outage.

AT &T serves more than 100 million customers across mobile and broadband services, according to the company's website .

Verizon and T-Mobile both told ABC News that their respective networks are not experiencing outages but customers may experience difficulty when contacting individuals affected by outages at other providers.

"Verizon's network is operating normally. Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation," a Verizon spokesperson said.

T-Mobile similarly told ABC News, "We did not experience an outage. Our network is operating normally. Down Detector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks."

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

AT&T says it has fully restored cellphone service to tens of thousands of customers in cities across the country whose phones lost signal overnight, causing frustration and concern about disruptions to 911 dispatches.

The FBI, in a statement Thursday afternoon, said the agency was "in contact with AT&T regarding today's network outage. Should we learn of any malicious activity we will respond accordingly."

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby also referred to the outage as he addressed reporters on Thursday. Kirby said the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were looking into the outage. He said the Federal Communications Commission was also in touch with AT&T.

"But the bottom line is we don't have all the answers," he said.

Around 3:30 a.m. ET Thursday, outages reported by downdetector.com suddenly spiked from just a handful, peaking at more than 73,000 by around 8:20 a.m. ET.

Planet Money

Why do doctors still use pagers, "we sincerely apologize".

By late afternoon Eastern time, AT&T said it had "restored wireless service to all our affected customers."

"We sincerely apologize to them," the company said in an email to NPR. "Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future."

Kirby said the Department of Commerce faced some disruptions as a result of the outage but those were not "crippling."

Earlier, Downdetector said that Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago, Indianapolis, New York, Miami and Charlotte reported the highest number of outages. Houston had more than 2,000 reports by about 8:30 a.m. ET, while New York reported about 1,300.

However, service disruptions caused concern Thursday morning even outside those areas, with the San Francisco Fire Department announcing on X , formerly Twitter, that it was "aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911)."

"We are actively engaged and monitoring this. The San Francisco 911 center is still operational. If you are an AT&T customer and cannot get through to 911, then please try calling from a landline. If that is not an option then please try to get ahold of a friend or family member who is a customer of a different carrier and ask them to call 911 on your behalf. Do not call or text 911 to simply test your phone service," the department said.

A survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics found in 2022 that nearly 71% of adults and 82% of children lived in wireless-only households.

Even if a cellular service provider is down, anyone with a cellphone can still place an emergency call or text, according to 911.gov . "However, calls to 911 on phones without active service do not deliver the caller's location to the 911 call center, and the call center cannot call these phones back to find out the caller's location or the nature of the emergency. If disconnected, the 911 center has no way to call back the caller," the website says.

Jared Juliano, assistant director for Prince William County Department of Public Safety Communications in Virginia, says 911 service there was never really disrupted, but calls coming in from AT&T phones did not have location information or what he describes as an "advanced caller ID."

However, he says 911 dispatchers "always verify a location even when we get locations from these numbers."

Police in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area in North Carolina said customers were "briefly unable to contact 9-1-1. There are no disruptions to our call center's ability to receive 9-1-1 calls. Service should be returning shortly."

Other providers reported business as usual

The outage did not appear to have any real impact on other providers. Verizon said its network was "operating normally."

"Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier," a company statement said.

Likewise, T-Mobile said in a statement that its network "is operating normally."

The outages occurred around the same time as a solar flare, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The agency said the flare — "an eruption of energy from the Sun that usually lasts from minutes to hours" — reached Earth at 1:32 a.m. ET.

NOAA says such flares can affect high-frequency radio signals, but only on the sunlit side of Earth.

United airlines to become the first us carrier to resume tel aviv flights.

The service was originally suspended in October 2023.

  • United Airlines announced the resumption of its Newark-Tel Aviv route, with daily operations to restart on March 6.
  • The initial flights will have a stopover in Munich, with full nonstop service beginning after.
  • The airline has collaborated with unions and regulators to ensure safe operations.

Earlier today, Chicago-based United Airlines announced that it would resume service between its primary East Coast gateway at Newark International Airport (EWR) and Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport (TLV). After these flights were suspended in October 2023 amid conflict in the region, these vital passenger and cargo connections between the United States and Israel are set to resume in the coming weeks.

United announced today that this service, operated by a Boeing 787-10 before the suspension, will resume daily operations. These connections, United Airlines Flight 90 and Flight 91, will now begin service on 2 March and 4 March, with full daily nonstop service set to resume on 6 March.

United Airlines Boeing 787

With several safety and redundancy reentering operational service on this route, the carrier is choosing to operate its first two roundtrip flights between the two cities with a stop at Munich International Airport (MUC). The airline then plans to launch its regular nonstop flights two days later.

A carefully planned decision

Considering the region's active conflict, many may wonder whether re-commencing operations so soon is the safest choice. However, United has carefully coordinated with several regulatory bodies and organizations within the industry to guarantee that passenger safety and comfort will not be compromised. In a statement on LinkedIn , United's CEO Scott Kirby had the following words to share:

"We will continue to monitor the situation in Tel Aviv and adjust the schedule as needed. I want to thank our United team and partners for your continued collaboration and commitment to safety."

The airline would go on to note that it had taken several measures to further ensure the safety of its crew members. While preparing to relaunch this connection, United collaborated with the Air Line Pilots Association, which represents its pilots, and the Association of Flight Attendants to develop particular protocols for this route.

The airline's decision to relaunch routes so soon comes on the heels of other carriers, which have continued to cite safety as a reason for not relaunching this spring, choosing to further delay service resumptions. For example, American Airlines, which had planned to begin flights again in May, pushed its launch date back to September.

Other resumption plans

When conflict broke out in Israel last fall, all US legacy carriers suspended their services to Tel Aviv. However, each carrier has taken a different approach to resuming flights.

ITA Airways Will Return To Tel Aviv In March

Along with its daily Newark route launch resumption, United Airlines is eagerly optimistic about the potential for demand recovery in the US-Israel air market. The airline has indicated its intention to add a second daily frequency from Newark in May if market conditions are favorable, alongside routes from its hubs at Chicago-O'Hare (ORD), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington-Dulles (IAD) in the fall.

Delta Air Lines and American Airlines have taken a significantly more cautious approach, guided by safety concerns and fears over a weak market. Previously, American served Tel Aviv from its hub at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, and Delta operated flights from Atlanta, Boston, and JFK, all of which are set to resume in the fall of 2024.

AT&T outage resolved, authorities investigating

By Aditi Sangal and Catherine Thorbecke , CNN

AT&T says it has restored wireless service

A cell tower in Los Angeles is pictured on February 22.

AT&T said in a statement that it has now resolved the day's massive service outage.

"We have restored wireless service to all our affected customers. We sincerely apologize to them. Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future," the company statement said.

No indication of malicious cyber activity so far, US cyber official says

From CNN's Sean Lyngaas

A US cyber official tracking the AT&T outage told CNN there has so far been no indication that the outage was caused by malicious cyber activity, but the investigation is ongoing.

Fewer than 5,000 AT&T customers still reporting outages

From CNN's Catherine Thorbecke

As of approximately 2 pm ET, fewer than 5,000 AT&T customers were still reporting outages, according to self-reported data tracked by DownDetector.

The FCC says it is investigating the outage

The Federal Communications Commission confirmed Thursday afternoon that it is investigating the AT&T outage.

“We are aware of the reported wireless outages, and our Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is actively investigating,” the FCC said in a statement Thursday afternoon that was posted on X.

“We are in touch with AT&T and public safety authorities, including FirstNet, as well as other providers," the agency added.

WH: Federal agencies still working to get to bottom of AT&T outages

From CNN’s Kevin Liptak

National Security spokesperson John Kirby attends a news briefing at the White House in Washington, DC, on February 15.

The White House says federal agencies are in touch with AT&T about network outages Thursday but that it doesn't have all the answers yet on what exactly transpired that led to the interruptions.

National Security spokesman John Kirby said the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI were looking into the matter and working with partners in the tech industry to "see what we can do from a federal perspective to lend a hand to their investigative efforts to figure out what happened here."

Kirby said that work was still ongoing.

"The bottom line is we don't have all the answers to that. I mean, this just happened earlier today. And so we're working very hard to see if we can get to the ground truth of exactly what happened," he said.

Tens of thousands of AT&T customers still say they have no service

As of approximately 12:30 pm ET, some 25,000 AT&T customers were still reporting outages, per data compiled by tracking site DownDetector . (DownDetector, notably, only tracks self-reported outages).

Still, the latest figure is a steep fall from the peak of some 74,000 AT&T customers reporting outages at around 9 am ET.

The DownDetector data indicates the widespread outage began around 4 am ET.

Telecom experts tell CNN that outages typically happen for mundane reasons

From CNN's Brian Fung

A "No Service" message is seen on an iPhone in Atlanta during an AT&T outage on February 22.

While Thursday's AT&T outage grabbed national headlines, outages do happen and usually for mundane reasons, several telecom experts told CNN.

Common causes include construction-related digging that punctures fiber optic cables and software misconfigurations that can lead to interruptions, said TJ Kennedy, a public safety communications expert.

"I can't think of every incident in the last few years, but I can think of things related to routers, things related to backhaul, things related to software," Kennedy said. "This has happened across all major carriers, multiple times in the past few years alone."

Thursday's outage could have been caused by human errors in AT&T's cloud-based networking system, said Lee McKnight, an associate professor at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies.

"The dirty secret of telecom networks these days is they are just a bunch of wires and towers connected to the cloud ,"  McKnight said. "Someone making a mistake, and others on their team — and their automated tools — not catching it, is quite common in cloud computing."

The FCC will almost certainly investigate the outage, experts tell CNN

The Federal Communications Commission will almost certainly investigate this week's incident, multiple experts said. The FCC requires carriers to report information linked to network disruptions.

"The carriers are required to report their outage numbers over time, and the commission can track the number of consumers and cell sites down and things like that," said a former FCC official.

Telecom carriers have every reason to fix any outages quickly, said the former FCC official, "because it creates black eyes for the brand."

"Everybody's incentives are aligned," the former official said. "The FCC is going to want to know what caused it so that lessons can be learned. And if they find malfeasance or bad actions or, just poor quality of oversight of the network, they have the latitude to act."

Gov. Ron DeSantis: "Think about the implications if something like that happened on a much grander scale"

From CNN’s Rebekah Riess

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks at a press conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, on February 22.

Florida Governor and former GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis opened an unrelated press conference on Thursday with comments regarding the ongoing AT&T network outage, affecting thousands of customers.

The governor said his office had been in touch with AT&T, who told them they were working to put customers back online, but were focusing on restoring emergency services. DeSantis said AT&T did not speak about what had caused the outage.

“You think about just your daily life, like having cell phones, honestly, it's like, imagine if we had like an EMP attack or something like that would end up happening this country,” DeSantis said. “It’s not necessarily a good thought, because you think you're just so naturally reliant on having cell service (…) so it's a little bit jarring and think about the implications if something like that happened on much grander scale.”

AT&T says cell service fully restored after major outage disrupts its mobile network

Customer reports of at&t wireless outages peaked at over 73,000 around 8:15 a.m. texas cities were particularly hard hit..

The cellular outage hit all carriers, but especially Dallas-based AT&T.

By Lana Ferguson , Maria Halkias and Irving Mejia-Hilario

7:09 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST — Updated at 8:50 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST

Sitting outside AT&T’s Dallas headquarters in the company’s signature Discovery District, small business owner Roxie Reese had a moment to reflect on the disruptive morning she and thousands of other wireless customers nationwide awoke to Thursday.

Reese had a morning appointment and grabbed her cellphone in a rush.

“I didn’t realize until after I left my house that I had no service,” said Reese, owner and founder of DFW Lash University. “I made it to my destination but I didn’t know where I was going. So it made me run behind. It’s a reminder that phones are a resource I take for granted because when it’s not available, it definitely makes life harder.”

Shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, AT&T said it had fully restored wireless service to all customers, including the critical FirstNet network used by emergency services nationally. The FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security were reported to be investigating why wireless subscribers lost service.

“Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future,” the telecommunications giant said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News .

Reports of outages to AT&T’s mobile service started around 2 a.m. and meant many Americans were unable to place calls, send texts or access the internet when they awoke. By 8:15 a.m. Dallas time, over 73,000 AT&T customers in major cities like Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago had reported cellular outages to Downdetector.com , a website that tracks service problems by users.

In all, AT&T customers filed over 1.5 million outage reports on Downdetector.

The problem even cascaded to other cellular carriers whose customers were believed to be trying to reach AT&T users.

AT&T did not provide a reason for the system failure.

At the White House, national security spokesman John Kirby played down the possibility of a cyberattack.

”Right now, we’re being told that AT&T has no reason to think that this was a cybersecurity incident,” he told reporters at midday. “But … we won’t know until an investigation has been completed. It’s good that the vast majority of customers have had their service restored. Obviously, we’ve got to do spade work to figure out what happened.”

Bloomberg reported the federal government is investigating whether the outage was caused by a cyberattack, citing two anonymous U.S. officials familiar with the situation.

Kristen Hanich, director of research at Addison-based research firm Parks Associates, said any number of potential issues could have been the cause.

“It could be anything from authentication issues to hardware failure or cloud configuration errors or cyber or other reasons,” she said. “Time will tell, and we are closely monitoring the story.”

Texas cities appeared to be particularly hard hit.

AT&T is the dominant wireless carrier in Texas, with 34% of the market, according to Parks Associates. Nationally, AT&T ranks third behind Verizon and T-Mobile with a 22% market share. It has about 87 million wireless subscribers.

Besides the consumer impact, AT&T’s emergency response network, FirstNet, also suffered disruptions. CNN reported AT&T’s network had seen sporadic outages over the previous few days, including a temporary 911 outage in some parts of the southeastern U.S. Several local governments around the U.S. said Thursday’s outage disrupted services.

San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management said in a statement on X , Thursday morning its 911 center remained operational but that many AT&T customers were unable to reach the emergency line because of the outages. It suggested people call from a landline or find someone with a rival’s service to dial 911.

The outage didn’t have a major impact on North Texas police departments.

“The Dallas Police Department is aware of the reported outage and is monitoring the situation,” the department said in a statement. “The department has not been impacted by the reported outage.”

The department’s 911 communications and other systems were functional, the statement said.

Fort Worth police said on X that its 911 call center also wasn’t affected

We are aware that there is a cellular outage affecting AT&T and some other mobile customers. However, this outage has not affected the 911 Call Center. We are still available for your emergency needs. — Fort Worth Police (@fortworthpd) February 22, 2024

“We are still available for your emergency needs,” its post said.

Frisco police advised residents that even if a cellphone is showing SOS, it should still be able to call 911.

A nationwide service outage affecting multiple cell phone providers appears to be slowly resolving. Those with phones still showing SOS should be able to reach 9-1-1 if needed. Matt Zavadsky, a spokesperson with MedStar, which provides emergency medical services to Fort Worth and surrounding areas, said the organization’s FirstNet system “became intermittent/non-functional” about 2:30 a.m. That caused MedStar to lose the ability to see its units on its computer system and it couldn’t use automated navigation to calls.

During that time, MedStar used radio dispatching and map books in the ambulances instead.

Other major entities in North Texas and across the state reported normal operations Thursday. ERCOT spokeswoman Trudi Webster said the state’s electric grid was operating normally.

DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field also saw no impact. Autonomous trucking companies Aurora and Kodiak and public hospital system, Parkland Health, reported no disruptions as well.

Some retailers seemingly anticipated such a problem.

H-E-B spokeswoman Mabrie Jackson said the popular grocery store’s point of sales systems don’t depend on WiFi, but store employees were sent outside to curbside pickup spaces to help customers whose cell phones were inoperable.

Other carriers besides AT&T were affected. Cricket Wireless had over 11,000 outages, Downdetector.com reported. Verizon had about 3,000 outages and T-Mobile more than 1,000. Boost Mobile had about 450 outages.

Verizon and T-Mobile both reported their users encountered difficulties trying to connect with customers on affected networks.

“We did not experience an outage,” T-Mobile said in a statement. “Our network is operating normally.”

User reports on Downdetector about a T-Mobile outage, the company added, “is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

Verizon said it also was unaffected.

“Verizon’s network is operating normally,” Verizon told CNN in a statement. “Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation.”

Previous outages

It’s not the first time AT&T has suffered a widespread outage. In 2008, the company dealt with an extensive wireless internet failure in the U.S. Northeast. In that incident, a glitch in the way the company’s network was routing traffic was identified as the culprit and the service failure was relatively short-lived.

In 2020, AT&T internet and phone service was knocked out in Nashville by an explosion in the city’s downtown area.

T-Mobile also has been hit with widespread outages, including one last February and one in 2020 that prompted the FCC to launch an investigation.

“In my experience, this type of outage can negatively impact financial results in the quarter in which it occurs and cause short-term lost goodwill with customers,” David Heger, an analyst at Edward D. Jones & Co., said in an email. “However, it does not have a longer term impact on the business.”

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts John Butler and Hunter Sacco wrote in a note that AT&T could take a reputational hit from the outage. “... Network reliability likely plays a big role in customers’ choice of a provider,” they wrote.
