The Xavier Aptitude Test , also popularly known as XAT, is conducted by XLR, Jamshedpur annually. This exam is taken by all those students who wish to study MBA and PGDM courses. While appearing in the examination, students have to go through several questions in the form of MCQs. Additionally, XAT essay writing is a part of the exam wherein the students must write one of 250-300 words. This section is included along with the General Knowledge section.

XAT essay writing section is very similar to the Written Ability Test (WAT) which is conducted by IIMs. However, the only difference is that all XAT takers have to do the essay section in the exam, while only the shortlisted candidates appear for the WAT round. 

One must remember that the percentile score does not include essay performance. But worry not, as the essay score does carry some weightage in the calculation of the final merit and it varies from college to college.

The main objective behind giving the XAT essay writing section is to evaluate the candidates based on their ability to think logically. The examiner tests the candidates’ ability to express themselves effectively. Speaking of which, we have listed the evaluation parameters for your essay as follows:

Structure of Essay 🏗️

In the essay, the first thing that the examiner checks is whether the essay flows logically or not from one paragraph to another. If the candidate has not logically stated their arguments in chronological order then there are chances of marks deduction. Keep in mind that proper structuring of sentences will fetch you marks. 

Knowledge 🧠

Part 1 of the essay tests your subject knowledge while Part 2 of the essay tests if you are aware of the ongoing debates in the public media as well as important events, personalities, laws etc. 

All the facts incorporated in your essay need to have some weightage to earn marks.

Creativity 💡

As future managers, the candidates need to produce new ideas as part of their job. Hence, the evaluators will expect your essay to be full of innovative ideas. 

Lastly, you must keep in mind that you don’t make any grammatical mistakes like spelling errors, or punctuation errors as there will be a penalty.

The marks allotted for the essay are not calculated while calculating the overall percentile. However, it is evaluated only after the candidate gets shortlisted for the Group Discussion (GD) or Personal Interview (PI) round.

The Xavier School of Management administers the XAT exam annually. The XAT is a management entrance exam that allows qualified candidates to enrol in XLRI Jamshedpur’s MBA and PGDM programs. The XAT exam includes an essay writing section, which is frequently combined with the General Knowledge section, and applicants are given 40 minutes to complete both. Candidates often find the Essay Writing in XAT exam  the most difficult of all, with concerns primarily about the essay’s subjects and how to deliver it in the allocated time.

However, it is important to note that XLRI has eliminated the Essay Writing section of the XAT 2022 exam. The XAT Exam 2022 will consist of three sections: an online objective test, a group discussion, and a personal interview.

The Xavier Labor Relations Institute has administered the XAT exam for decades. But they recently announced a significant alteration to the exam format, which has caused quite a stir on the internet. 

XLRI has removed the essay section from the XAT exam. However, the scoring methodology has not changed. In the XAT, the essay writing test has been replaced by multiple-choice questions worth one mark each.

How To Write Essay For XAT Exam

Besides content knowledge, Essay Writing is an art that includes writing flow, grammatically accurate composition, and creating meaningful words in simple and clear language. The primary abilities required for writing a decent essay are subject knowledge, clarity of thought, correct use of vocabulary and grammar, the flow of ideas, and illustrations based on facts. The following are some of the most crucial XAT essay writing tips:

• Analyse the subject and choose a direction for your essay.
• Make a rough draft of the topic you’ll be writing about.
• Make sure to write in short paragraphs so that it seems and sounds engaging to read.
• Make a list of the ideas you wish to offer in your essay in the right order, and back up your points with facts and information, examples, and so on.
• Each paragraph should represent a new notion contributing to the main theme, and paragraph flow is essential. The words must have definite meanings and no ambiguity.
• The first paragraph should serve as an introduction to the topic, with succeeding paragraphs expanding the idea.
• Candidates must conclude the essential point in the last paragraph.
• You can write an essay in either deductive or inductive style.
• Read the directions attentively, concentrate on the main point rather than the details, and keep count of your, so you don’t go over your allotted time.

Jargon, slang, clichés, and abbreviations should all be avoided.

• Candidates should carefully structure the essay. It must not go above the required words.

XLRI will conduct Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2024 on Sunday January 7, 2024 in afternoon. To familiarise the candidates with actual XAT 2024 exam pattern and difficulty level, XLRI conducted two official XAT Mock Tests on October 28 and November 5, 2024. 

The XAT 2024 exam pattern has introduced many aspirant friendly changes. The exam remains a computer based test as was last year with no change in pattern and not to be a difficult exam. Sharing about the difficulty level of XAT exam, the convener of XAT 2024, Dr Rahul Kumar Shukla, XLRI faculty said, “ XAT isn't a difficult test; it's about gauging astuteness. The examination is tailored to evaluate candidates’ analytical depth and strategic acumen.”

XAT 2024 Exam Pattern: Sectional Composition & Scoring Pattern

Key highlights of XAT exam pattern 2024, the sectional composition with number of questions, key topics in revised test pattern are shared below:

Salient Features of XAT 2024 Exam Pattern

• XAT Testing Mode: Computer Based Test at Exam Centres
• XAT MCQ Questions : 101
• XAT Non-MCQ Questions: 1 Essay Writing (Descriptive)
• Question Type : MCQs + Essay
• XAT Pattern for MCQs : Each MCQ is followed by 5 answer options
• XAT Scoring Pattern : +1 Mark for Each Correct
• Negative Marking in XAT 2024 : 0.25 (¼) mark deducted for MCQs from Sl. 1 to 75
• No Negative Marking Questions in XAT : GK questions are free from Negative Marking
• XAT Exam Time Duration : XAT 2024 will have a time duration of 3 hours and 10 minutes.
• XAT 2024 - Percentile Calculation : Only 3 sections in XAT exam are taken into account to calculate the XAT percentile score and XAT merit list for written exam. GK will not be counted for percentile calculation in XAT exam.
• No Sectional Time Limit : XAT does not have sectional time limit to solve the question paper. Candidate can attempt any question from any of the three sections within the overall time limit of 165 minutes. However, candidate will be allowed to go to Part 2 in the question paper after completing the time duration of Part 1
• Evaluation of Essay writing test will be done only for the shortlisted candidates

Key Highlights and Changes in XAT 2024 Pattern

• Penalty for Un-attempted Questions : Each un-attempted question beyond 8 questions will carry a negative marking penalty of 0.10 mark per unattempted question
• Essay Writing Test Restored: The descriptive question on Essay Writing test is restored in XAT exam.
• Time Duration increased : XAT 2024 exam will have a time duration of three hours and 30 minutes instead of earlier three hours and 10 minutes.
• 25 Minutes Extra for Visually Impaired Candidates : XAT 2024 offers 25 minutes extra time for the scribe to complete the part-1 (first 3 sections) of XAT exam. No time concession is given for GK section
• Evaluation of Essay:   Essay shall be evaluated after the candidate is shortlisted for the interview.
• Countdown Timer: The countdown timer at the top, right-hand side of the screen will display the time remaining, time available for you to complete the examination for the part of the question paper you are answering (Part 1/Part 2). On completion of 175 minutes, the timer will reach zero and Part 1 will be locked. You will be moved to Part 2, i.e., General Knowledge & Essay section of the Question Paper
• Can’t Leave Before: You are not allowed to leave the test lab before completion of the test in the revised XLRI Pattern for XAT 2024

XAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2024 XAT syllabus and pattern is changed now. Revamping the exam pattern and syllabus 2024, XLRI has brought about number of changes in number and composition of sections in XAT exam. Apart from restoring the essay writing test in XAT 2024, a new type of NAT question has been introduced in the exam.

To cover the XAT exam, candidates have to change their XAT preparation strategy as per the online exam pattern. Besides, it will be helpful to download XAT pattern Pdf to clearly understand the XAT syllabus and pattern. The key features of revamped XAT exam are as follows: 

VARC & LR: 1 st  section XAT exam 2024 for the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) and Logical Reasoning section comprises the following:

• Total questions: 26
• Type of questions: MCQs
• RC passages: 4
• RC Based questions: 14 to 16
• VA questions: 8 to 10
• VA topics: Vocabulary; Analogy; Para Jumbles, Para completion; Critical Reasoning; Statements-assumptions;
• Lod: Moderate to Very difficult

Decision Making: 2 nd  section Decision Making section in XAT decides the fate of candidates. The XAT syllabus and pattern for Decision Making section consists of short caselets, decision making problems. The questions are mostly in sets.

• Total questions: 21
• Question groups: 7 to 8 sets of decision making problems following by 2 and 3 questions each
• LoD: Moderate to difficult

Quant & DI: 3 rd  section Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation section in XAT consists of individual questions from all parts of Quant and Data Interpretation problems followed by questions in sets of 3-4.  

• Total questions: 28
• Frequently asked topics in Quant & DI Section:

Questions are frequently asked on Time & Work, Percentage, Profit & Loss, Equations, Number system, Clocks, Geometry, Algebra, Mensuration, Venn diagram, Tables, Bar diagram, graphs

GK: 4 th  section

There is no XAT syllabus and pattern for GK in XAT exam. The questions can be based on any topic under the Sun.

• Total questions: 25
• Time Limit to Attempt: 15 minutes
• Question topics: GK questions could be based on any topic including Current domestic and international affairs; Business; Economics; social issues, appointments; conventional GK; sports; Constitution of India among others.
• Key highlight: Not taken into account for calculation of percentile in XAT exam.

Essay Writing: 5 th Section The list of XAT essay topics consists such essay topics which appeared in past Essay writing tests in XAT.  XAT Essay topics are mostly based on abstract ideas. The Essay Writing Test in XAT has been restored after three years. It was removed in 2019 XAT exam. The Essay topics in XAT exam are also used in WAT process by many top MBA colleges.

XAT Exam pattern Pdf: Last 10 years of XAT Pattern Shared below are the key changes in XAT exam composition during last 8-10 years.

All questions now carry equal marks in XAT paper pattern as also revealed in XAT previous years question paper and exam pattern. Each MCQ question in XAT 2024 test paper will have 5 answer options. Apart from overall cut-off percentile, the XAT 2024 exam will also have sectional cut-offs.

XLRI Jamshedpur specified the XAT 2024 exam pattern on its official website. According to the official XAT 2024 paper pattern, the exam had three parts with time limits. The XAT entrance exam was conducted as a computer-based test on January 7, 2024, from 2 PM to 5:30 PM. The duration of the XAT 2024 was 210 min (Part I - 175 min; Part II - 5 min; Part III - 30 min). The XAT exam was held in the English language only. Part I of the XAT 2024 question paper comprised Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA & LR), Decision-making (DM), and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI). Part II was a 5-minute session of mock keyboard testing and Part III had a General Knowledge (GK) section along with an Analytical Essay Writing (AEW). The PwD candidates will be granted an additional 20 minutes for every hour.

The XAT paper had a total of 103 MCQ and 3 essay topic out of which candidates had to choose one. The XAT pattern also mentions the type and number of questions that were asked in the exam. XAT is a national-level entrance exam for MBA admissions, conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur and is normally categorized into tough standards. XLRI changed the XAT 2024 exam timing from morning to afternoon. XAT exam 2024 was conducted from 2 PM to 5:30 PM instead of 9:30 AM to 12:40 PM.

As per the trends of the XAT paper pattern, the total number of questions that was asked in XAT 2024 was 103+1 AEW. The XAT exam pattern had questions multiple choice-based questions. The sections from which questions were asked in the XAT exam are- Decision-making making, Verbal & Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge along with the Essay Writing section. The duration of the XAT 2024 exam was 210 minutes with no sectional time limit. Let us check the variable distribution of questions in the XAT exam paper.

Section-Wise XAT Question Pattern: XAT Pattern 2024

One of the key aspects of the XAT exam paper is the marking scheme. The XAT marking scheme pattern is different from other test papers. There is no XAT negative marking for questions asked in the General Knowledge sections. However, there is a penalty of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. In addition to this, if the candidate leaves 8 questions unattempted then the negative marking of 0.10 marks is done. Check out the marking scheme of XAT.

• One mark will be awarded for each right answer to XAT
• - 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer
• - 0.10 marks will be deducted for more than eight unanswered questions
• There will be no negative marking in XAT in the General Knowledge (GK) section

The scores of the General Knowledge section will not be considered for calculating the XAT score

There is a variable distribution of questions in the XAT entrance exam, i.e. one section has more than another section. Apart from MCQs, one essay writing question will asked too in this test. Check out the sectional break-up of the XAT 2024 question paper.

The XAT exam has a distinct pattern that sets it apart from other MBA entrance exams in India. It garners over 75,000 aspirants annually and includes four sections:

• Verbal and Logical Ability
• Decision Making
• Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation
• General Knowledge

Along with the recently reintroduced Essay Writing section in 2022. This reintroduction requires candidates to adjust their preparation compared to CAT. Additionally, the 2025 XAT paper pattern extends over a total duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

XAT Exam Pattern 2025: Highlights

Before attempting the XAT 2025 exam, it's essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of its details. This knowledge will facilitate better comprehension and more effective preparation. Here are some key details to consider:

XAT Exam Pattern 2025: Detailed Analysis

The XAT Pattern consists of two parts with a total of 101 Questions (expected) overall. The anticipated distributions of questions are given below:

XAT Exam Pattern 2025: Marking Scheme

• For every correct answer in the MCQs, a +1 mark will be awarded.
• An incorrect attempt carries a penalty of 0.25 marks.
• Apart from these marks, a candidate cannot leave over 8 questions unattempted. All questions (over 8) left unattempted carry a penalty (expected) of 0.10 marks.
• The General Knowledge Section does not carry any negative marking.

This aspect of the XAT exam pattern makes the XAT exam quite difficult because of the restriction on the number of questions that can be left unattempted. Thus the XAT Exam Strategy becomes extremely important for the candidates. This can only be formed after several mocks attempted by the candidate.

XAT Exam Pattern 2025: Key Changes in Previous Years

The XAT Paper Pattern has undergone several changes over the past 3-4 years. The most significant change was the shift from the Paper Based Test to the Computer Based Test in 2018. Apart from this, other changes that have taken place over the years include:

• Essay Based Question was scrapped after XAT 2018
• The number of Questions has fluctuated over the years
• The number of un-attempted questions allowed has been reduced from 12 to 8
• Subjective Questions were removed in XAT 2019 but have been reintroduced in XAT 2020
• Essay Writing has been included in XAT 2022
• The total Decision Making questions were 22 in XAT 2023 and the time of the exam increased to 210 minutes.

XAT Exam Pattern: Section-Wise Analysis

As you can see, the XAT Pattern has been shifting slightly over the years. This makes preparing for the XAT Exam slightly tricky however the sections have remained the same due to which the XAT Syllabus can be looked at in brief.

Section 1: Verbal and Logical Ability

This section is a combination of the VARC section and LR section from the CAT Exam. The topics which are generally tested in this section, apart from Reading Comprehension, include:

• Vocabulary, Analogy
• Paragraph Jumbles, Paragraph Completion
• Critical Reasoning
• Statements-Assumptions

Section 2: Decision Making

This is a section that is not tested at all in CAT or in any other MBA Entrance Exams. Last year, it consisted of 6 passages with 2-3 questions each.

There is no particular preparation or syllabus for this section as it is based on the clarity of thought of the candidate. The set of questions also ensures that the answers that the candidate gives do not contradict each other.

Section 3: Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation

This section like section 1 is a combination of two sections from the CAT Exam. This section consists of the Quantitative Ability as well as Data Interpretation Questions. The Data Interpretation sets are usually followed by 3-4 questions.

The syllabus for the Quantitative Ability is the same as in CAT with the most frequently asked topics being:

• Time & Work
• Profit & Loss
• Number Systems
• Mensuration
• Venn Diagrams
• Bar Diagrams

The breakup of the section was 25 questions of QA and 3 of DI in XAT 2025.

Section 4: General Knowledge

The General Knowledge section of the XAT 2025 is expected to have no syllabus and can range from current affairs as well as trivia. Based on previous trends, the questions are a balance between static GK and current affairs. The syllabus for this section can vary from literature and politics to technology.

Section 4: Essay Writing

The Essay Writing section was reintroduced in XAT pattern 2022 with candidates being given three options to choose one essay from. There is no syllabus for this section and essay topics are often given based on abstract ideas and thoughts.

Based on the analysis of the previous year's XAT exam, the anticipated difficulty level of the XAT 2025 exam is expected to vary from moderately challenging. The following table outlines the specific level of difficulty for each section of the XAT 2025 exam:

The XAT 2025 question paper is expected to contain about 100 multiple-choice questions spread across four sections. The Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation section holds the most significant weightage. Below is a breakdown of the weightage for each section in the XAT exam:

How many times is XAT conducted in a year?

XAT is conducted once every year in an online mode.

What type of questions will be asked in XAT 2025?

XAT 2025 will comprise multiple-choice questions in all sections except one. Essay Writing will have one subjective question.

How many attempts are there in XAT?

There is no limit to the number of attempts a candidate can take in XAT. Thus, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria, you can appear for the XAT exam every year.

Can a third-year student give XAT?

Based on the eligibility criteria, a candidate who holds a bachelor's degree of three or more years can give XAT. A candidate in the final year of their bachelor's degree is also eligible to appear for XAT 2025.

Does the GK section have a negative marking in XAT?

While an incorrect attempt in XAT results in the deduction of 0.25 marks, it is applicable to the three sections excluding GK. Thus, the GK section does not have any negative markings.

XAT consists of 100 objective questions and 1 essay topic. The paper is divided into two parts. Part-I comprises the first three sections that are considered for the final score, whereas Part-II is composed of GK section and Essay Writing. There is no sectional time limit for part-I, which means you have to manage the total time (165 minutes) very efficiently. For Part-I, there is a negative marking of 0.25 for each incorrect answer and a penalty of 0.10 after every 8 unattempted questions. However, no marks are deducted in Part II. Although your GK score doesn’t count in the final XAT percentile, yet it plays a deciding role in B-school admission process. Besides, the essay is evaluated only after the candidate is shortlisted for interview.

• Quantitative ability mainly focuses on arithmetic, geometry, and algebra.
• Verbal and Logical ability includes critical reasoning, inference-based questions, reading comprehensions, sentence corrections, etc.
• Decision-making section involves ethical dilemmas, managerial issues, and other situational questions. This section is unique to XAT, since other entrance tests don’t generally feature any such section.
• GK section emphasises on static general knowledge as well as current happenings from the fields of economics, polity, etc.
• Essay Topics are mostly general or abstract in nature. These are also based on the latest issues and current events.
