How Does Communication Help in Improving Your Personality?

How Does Communication Help in Improving Your Personality?

Communication is an essential skill that everyone needs to develop and master to get ahead in life. Sometimes we assume that other people know how we feel or interpret our non-verbal cues, but this isn’t always the case.

Taking the time to communicate your feelings and your thoughts can save you from unnecessary conflict and help you build stronger relationships with family, friends, and coworkers. Here are seven reasons why communication is important.

Why Communication is Important

Helps build and maintain relationships.

Communication is an important part of the human experience. It helps us build and maintain relationships with others. We can share our thoughts, ideas, and feelings to better understand how we relate to each other.

It's also important because it allows people who may not be able to hear or speak, a chance to feel like they are a part of society.

We are also able to develop new skills by communicating with others and understanding what they say in return. Effective communication is something that can help us grow as individuals, help us make decisions more quickly, and allow us to explore our creativity more fully.

Aids in Problem-Solving

Communication is important in a business for several reasons. One reason is that it aids in problem-solving. When there are problems, the best way to solve them can be to communicate with people and let them know what the problem is and what the possible solutions could be.

This way, everyone has an opportunity to voice their opinions on how they feel should be done and if they have any ideas or thoughts. It also helps when employees are on break or late coming into work because they can then let someone know what has happened so that others can take over their responsibilities while they get back on track or get started with their day.

Increases Understanding

Communication is important because it helps us understand each other. It provides a way for us to express our thoughts and feelings, and to be sure that the person listening understands what we are saying. For example, when we try to get someone's attention in a crowded room, we might say excuse me or hey.

This tells the person that they should listen to us now because we have something important to say. Similarly, if someone asks us for help and we don't answer, then they may not feel comfortable asking again.

Finally, if one of our friends needs something from us but it takes too long for them to get in touch with us, then they may become angry or frustrated with what feels like a lack of concern from their end.

Prevents Misunderstandings

How to  improve my personality and communication skills ? Communication is key in any relationship. This includes friendships, romantic relationships, and business partnerships. Without communication, misunderstandings can happen. When there are misunderstandings, people may feel hurt or misunderstood and may not be able to move past them.

People will also tend to lose respect for one another when there are misunderstandings because they will think that the other person does not care enough about them to communicate properly.

If you communicate properly with your partner, friend, or business partner, it will help them trust you more because they know that you care enough about them to take the time to talk things through when issues arise. There's nothing worse than having a misunderstanding that can't be resolved so make sure to have an open dialogue with anyone who means something to you.

Creates Clarity

Communication skills in personality development might be one of the most important factors in your relationships, but it's often overlooked. There are many ways you can   improve your communication skills and make your relationships better. Here are some tips to help you:

  • Be more expressive in what you say - use more words to explain yourself and show how you feel.
  • Listen actively - don't interrupt or advise unless it's asked for and take the time to hear what they're saying before responding.
  • Ask questions - get their perspective on things by asking them about their thoughts and feelings on an issue, rather than assuming you know what they're feeling.
  • Practice active listening - repeat back to them what they said so that they know you heard what they were saying.

Encourages openness

When communication breaks down, there are a variety of ways that it can affect your business. For example, if you have a team and someone isn't providing input or feedback to the project, then the progress will be slowed.

If you're on a customer service line and no one answers the phone, then people will be unhappy with your service. The list goes on and on.

It's the key to a successful relationship

Communication skills in personality development are vital to any relationship but are especially important in a marriage. You're going to have disagreements and arguments, which can be frustrating and hurtful, but if you don't communicate those feelings then your partner will never know how you feel.

And when it comes to something as important as your marriage, it's best not to keep things bottled up. Not only does communicating your feelings make for an emotionally healthier marriage, but it also makes for a more fulfilling one.

So, take the time to talk about your worries and concerns with your spouse, and let them know what they mean to you.

Communication skills in personality development are the most important skill that you need to have to interact with your colleagues and friends, from conversation starters to goodbyes, communication plays a very important role in our daily lives and also helps in improving our personality as well. Communication helps us to develop relationships with people and also play an important role in shaping our personality, so today we are going to discuss 10 ways how does communication help in improving your personality? Let’s take a look!

1) Helps You Connect With Others

When you communicate with others, you can get your thoughts and feelings out in the open. This will allow you to have a better understanding of yourself and those around you. As you do this, you will likely see things in a different light and find new ways of looking at them.

Communication skills in personality development also help you build relationships with people and learn more about who they are. People need to be able to form connections with others so that they can learn more about themselves. With all of these benefits, it is easy to see why communication is so important for improving your personality.

2) Develops Your Listening Skills

Listening is an important skill that can help you in your personal and professional life. When you are listening to someone, it is a sign that you care about them and want to know what they have to say. If you are not listening, it can make the speaker feel undervalued or unimportant. It also means that they might not be able to communicate effectively with you if they can't get your attention.

Listening is more than just hearing the words that are said; it means paying attention to what's being communicated through body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions too. This helps people feel heard and understood on a deeper level which can lead to a greater rapport between two people.

3) Helps You Understand Yourself Better

Communication and personality development is a two-way streets. When you share your thoughts, feelings, and needs with others, they are allowed to understand you better. It also allows you to gain more insight into yourself by observing how others react to your words.

You may be tempted to think that people who don't react positively are wrong or that they just don't get you, but the truth is that there's always something good in what other people say because they see something in you that you might not see in yourself.

One of the best things about  communication and personality development is being able to hear new perspectives on an issue from someone else.

4) Makes You More Confident

Communication and personality development is one of the most important aspects of any relationship. It can make you more confident, as well as understanding, and compassionate.

When you listen to other people and share your thoughts and ideas, it's a way of showing them that you care about what they have to say. This will make them feel valued and respected which in turn will boost their self-esteem.

Not only will this improve the quality of their life, but it will also help them see things from a different perspective.

If they're angry or frustrated with something, having someone who understands them might just be enough to show that person another side of the story. And not just because someone is giving advice, but because the act of communication shows an interest in what the person has to say.

A good example of  communication and personality development would be when someone tells you about how something makes them feel and then ask for feedback on whether or not it made sense (whether or not it was accurate). If you validate their feelings by saying yes and agreeing with them, then this creates a feeling of trust between both parties.

5) Helps You Handle Criticism Better

When people criticize you, it's natural to get defensive. But there are many ways to respond to criticism that can help you become a better person:

  • Listen and think before responding. If the criticism is valid, thank the other person for their input.
  • Ask questions if you want more detail on what they're saying or why they see it that way.
  • Remember that nobody has all the answers and we all have different perspectives on things.
  • Admit when you're wrong and apologize if necessary.
  • Look at your mistakes with a sense of humor - it'll make them easier to deal with in the future!
  • Learn from your mistakes and find ways to avoid them in the future by reflecting on what happened.

6) Makes You A Better Leader

A person's communication skills help them become a better leader. For example, if you are in a leadership position and need to share information, you should always start by sharing what you know and focusing on the facts.

You want to be able to go into detail about the situation that is happening but make sure not to share too much information so that others are not overwhelmed with data they do not need to know.

When communicating with your team members, it is important that everyone feels heard and valued. It may take some time for people to get used to this new way of communication, but once they do it will pay off in the long run. People will feel more comfortable coming up to you when there is an issue because they know that their voice matters.

7) Makes You More Creative

There are many ways that communication can help you to improve your personality. One of the benefits is that it can make you more creative. This is because communication helps to develop your imagination and creativity skills. It also opens up new opportunities for you to learn about different cultures and things that you may never have heard of before.

This will expand the way that you see the world, which in turn makes it easier for you to use your creativity in a new way, as well as be more imaginative and creative in general. Another way that communicating with other people has helped me with my personality is by boosting my self-confidence. Because when I communicate with people I am opening myself up to them and telling them things about myself or getting them to open themselves up to me so I feel like we connect on some level.

That way when I talk to people, they are not just strangers anymore; they are friends to me who know something about me and vice versa.

8) Helps You Handle Conflict Better

Communication is a process of transferring information from one entity to another. It has two functions. One is to share thoughts, feelings, and emotions with others to make them understand what you are feeling or thinking about.

The other function is to convey messages and instructions for actions. Communication can be verbal or non-verbal. Verbal communication includes speaking, listening, and writing whereas non-verbal communication includes gestures, facial expressions, and body language.

Communication and personality development helps in improving your personality because it helps you handle conflicts better in society. You can communicate with other people without any fear or anxiety which will help you feel good about yourself as well.

9) Teaches You Empathy

Communication is a key to success in many aspects of life. It can make or break relationships, and it can change the dynamics at work. But there's another benefit of communication that you may not have considered: improving your personality.

Many different elements contribute to our personalities, but communication is a large part of how we express ourselves. Whether you're sharing your thoughts on something or expressing your opinion, it affects how other people see us and judge us. The way we communicate conveys information about our attitudes and personality traits, so it shapes how others see us as well as what they think of us.

If you want to improve your personality in any way, start by paying attention to how you communicate with others and what you say when you talk.

10) Encourages Lifelong Learning

Communication is often seen as one of the most important skills in life and it's not hard to see why. Learning how to communicate effectively means learning how to listen, debate and talk with people of different backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures. It means being able to express your thoughts and feelings clearly so that you can be understood by others.

How to  improve my personality and communication skills ? By learning how to communicate, we also learn how to make ourselves vulnerable without fear of judgment or rejection. We learn that communication is a two-way street where both parties have the opportunity for expression.

But what does this have anything to do with improving your personality? Surprisingly, communication can help you improve your personality because it helps you understand yourself more deeply and lets you know what you need for you to feel better about yourself.

Why Communication Matters

We communicate to create, maintain, and change relationships and selves..

  • Why Relationships Matter

  • How we communicate helps relationships get off on the right foot, navigate problems, and change over time.
  • In communication, we develop, create, maintain, and alter our relationships.
  • We communicate to work our way through family changes and challenges in verbal and non-verbal ways.

I remember seeing a poster on my junior high classroom wall: “Communication is the Beginning of Understanding.” This spoke to me at the time. Yet, like so many people, I had never really thought much about communication. I would have described communication as sending and receiving messages.

Communication Is More Than Sending and Receiving Messages

In reality, communication is often about transmitting information. We send and receive messages with people in our lives. Daily, much of our communication consists of coordinating schedules, “What time are you getting home for dinner?” and negotiating whose turn it is to do the dishes, pay the bills, or take dinner to a friend who is ill. We send messages like, “It is your turn to let the dog out” and receive messages like, “Don’t forget to get dog food at the store” (if you have not guessed, a lot of the messages in my house are about the dog).

We might also blame problems on communication, talking about “communication breakdowns” or on a “lack of communication.” If we think about communication in these ways, we have missed so much that is important about communication. We have neglected how and why communication matters.

Communication Matters to Creating and Changing Relationships

We become aware of how Communication Matters when

  • We confront issues with work-life balance.
  • We experience positive events like the birth of a baby or winning an award.
  • We have a friend does who does not do or say what we expect.
  • We have disagreements over religious beliefs or political values.

Both positive and challenging events affect, reflect, and change our identity and the identity of our personal and family relationships. What do I mean by this? How did these relationships come into being? Well, think about the last time you started a new friendship or had a new member join your family. Through what you and the other person said and did, what we’d call verbal and nonverbal communication , these relationships took shape.

Sometimes relationships develop easily and clearly. They are healthy and pleasant. Other times, relationships develop in stress and storm and may be healthy or not. How we communicate helps relationships get off on the right foot, navigate problems, and change over time.

What is important to understand is that relationships are talked into (and out of) being. In communication, we develop, create, maintain, and alter our relationships. As we communicate, we become and change who we are. Think about how you have grown and changed as you communicate at home, at work, with friends, and in your community.

Communication Matters to Relationship and Family Identity

As we communicate, we co-create relationships and our own identity. As you think about your close relationships and your family, you can likely recall important events, both positive and negative, that impacted how you understand your relationship and yourself as a person.

Consider this example: one of my college students described a childhood family ritual of going out on the front lawn on Christmas Eve. The family sang Christmas carols and threw carrots on the roof for Santa’s reindeers. The family still does this annual carrot-throwing ritual in adulthood. You can picture them bringing their sometimes confused new partners and spouses out in the snow to throw carrots onto the roof and sing.

Why does this family still throw carrots and sing? Through this seemingly silly ritual, the family celebrates who they are as a family and the togetherness that is important to them. The family creates space for new people to join the family. Through their words and actions, members of the family teach their new partners how to be family members through carrot throwing and other vital experiences.

I am sure you can point to experiences that have been central to creating your relationships and your identity.

Communication Matters as We Face Change and Challenges

We also communicate to work our way through family changes and challenges. Family members or others may have different expectations of what our family and personal identity or should be. This is especially true when a family does not fit dominant cultural models, such as single-parent families, multi-ethnic families, stepfamilies, LGBTQ families, or adoptive families.

essay about communication and personality

For me, becoming a stepfamily was highly challenging. We became a stepfamily when I was 12 years old. My mother had recently died, and my Dad surprised us, kids, introducing us to the woman he wanted to marry. We no longer matched the other families in the neighborhood where we’d lived most of our lives. We certainly did not feel like a family overnight.

It took my stepfamily several years to create an understanding of what it meant to be a family. As we interacted, and with many mistakes and some successes, we slowly came to understand what we needed and expected from each other to be a family.

For all of us, relationship and family identity is constantly developing and changing. In my case, I remember my stepmom reminding me to wear a jacket when going out in the evening, even into my 40s, and giving me advice about my health. At some point, our roles changed, and now, as she moves toward her 80s, more often than not, I am in the role of asking about her health and helping her with significant decisions. What it means to be a mother or daughter and what we expect of each other and ourselves change as we interact.

Communication Matters . Whether we are negotiating whose turn it is to feed the dog, how to become a parent, how to interact with a difficult co-worker, or how to celebrate with a friend who won a major award, it is in communication that we learn what to do and say. This is what I will write about in this blog as I reflect on what I have learned as a professor and researcher of interpersonal and family communication. I invite you to go on this journey with me. I hope to give you insights into your communication.

Communication Matters. Communication is the Beginning of Understanding . It is an exciting and ever-changing journey.

Does Personality Describe The Person | Band 9 Essay Sample

Does personality describe the person? To what extent do you agree?

Here is a band 9 essay sample on this topic. Need help with IELTS writing? Get your IELTS essays, letters and reports corrected by me.

Band 9 essay sample

A person’s personality determines how they will behave in a particular situation. Some people have a sunny disposition. They spread joy wherever they go. Some are always moody and anyone who interacts with them may find themselves affected by their negativity. In my opinion, personality certainly describes a person because it is the outward display of our character, values, likes and dislikes.

People may be able to fake their emotions. For example, someone who is jealous of your success may actually hide that emotion and try to appear happy for you. Personality, however, cannot be faked that easily. It defines you. For instance, it is nearly impossible for an introvert person to conduct himself as an extrovert. Introverts are happy within their cocoons and have little inclination to socialize with others. They may show high levels of loyalty to the few people in their life. They may also possess higher levels of creativity and imagination because of their ability to explore the world inside. They may also make great thinkers or writers. Extroverts, on the other hand, have an outgoing personality. They are crowd pullers and make excellent leaders. They make friends wherever they go and have an agreeable disposition.

Some people have an altruistic personality. They find happiness in helping others. They have a spiritual bend of mind and may even come across as unworldly. They inspire many people around them and may even have a decent following. It is nearly impossible for an altruistic person to cheat or hurt others. This personality trait makes them highly valued and respected members of the society. Often times, they put others’ interests above theirs and their family may dislike this trait of them.

In conclusion, the personality of a person provides an accurate description of their character. By simply analyzing the personality we can determine whether somebody is selfish, dependable, sociable or aloof.

essay about communication and personality

The essay is not pertaining to the above topic. Thanks for marking. In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry. Why is this the case? What can be done about this problem?

Many kinds of researches and scientific experiments are done to develop new seeds and farming techniques, but little is done to ensure that the people are not died due to lack of food. In different parts of the world, many people are confronting poverty due to lack of purchasing power. Majority of them are poor class under the poverty line without any disposable income to feed themselves or their family members. For them, even though, a significant revolution has happened in the farming sector, it has little effect on their prevailing core social issue. Unless this advancement is made in the agriculture industry in terms of reduced production cost and cheap end-user price, the food deprivation will be an ongoing chapter. For instance, it is a paradox that man was able to set up an agricultural shelter in Antarctica but failed to aid food for many refugees in several camps. The role of government and local farmers is paramount in this case. Local farmers can use the tips of modern farming technique to yield more production with minimal cost resulting in cheap food cost. Likewise, the government can support these farmers with additional subsidies like logistic and storage facilities to enhance their mission. When the farmers are able to utilize these provisions, the end result will be the availability of affordable, locally made food to many people. Thus, to sum up, unless the food is made available to less fortunate people at a lesser price, any progress done in this field is not valid. Whereas, farmers and government should be able to address this issue with their joint hands.

essay about communication and personality

>>>>>>>>>>Scientists predict that all people will choose to talk the same global language in the future. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

According to some scientists, everyone will be speaking the same language in the future. If this prediction does come true, in my opinion, it will have both positive and negative ramifications.

No doubt, a universal language will benefit both people and businesses in numerous ways. It will make communication easier. As a result, businesses can market their products all over the world. People can also travel to any part of the world without having to worry about getting lost because of the language barrier. This, in turn, will benefit industries such as travel and hospitality. Needless to say, a universal language will benefit almost all economies around the world. It may even foster respect and understanding among people of different ethnicities.

On the flip side, the prospect of having just one language for all does not bode well for the preservation of cultural identities. Culture is intrinsically linked to language. So if people adopt a global language and stop using their mother tongue it will not take long for their culture to die. The death of local languages will also make the folklore and literature in that language unavailable to future generations. In my opinion, this will be a huge loss to humanity. Another possible consequence will be the loss of employment for people working as translators and interpreters. In a world where everyone speaks the same language, they will be rendered jobless.

In conclusion, a universal language can be beneficial for businesses and people because it facilitates hassle-free communication. However, it may lead to the demise of cultures and diversity.

You just copied the essay I posted here: https://www.ielts-practice.org/scientists-predict-that-all-people-will-choose-to-talk-the-same-global-language-in-the-future-band-9-ielts-essay-sample/

essay about communication and personality

Does personality describe the person? To what extent do you agree? Whether one’s personality is the most important and the key defining factor of a person or not is an unanswered question which has gained much attention. I personally agree with the fact that personality is implicated in how a person is described and perceived. The first area in which personality plays a crucial role in people’s interpretation of the world around them. This interpretation is made based on our personality in that the personality act as a lens through which people see the world and communicate with it. Naturally, those who enjoy a deep, complex, and multi-faceted personality are more likely to have an accurate interpretation, and those who lack such personality are likely to fail to interpret the world correctly, thus likely to fail. Therefore, by the means of this interpretation, which is energized by personality, people perceive their fellows, and their fellows reciprocally perceive them in different ways; maybe positively or negatively. If it is positively, people have more chance to make achievement and vice versa. Moreover, people are always being evaluated during their lives in several situations ranging from university placements to job interviews, most of which based on personality traits. As being successful in these interviews can sometimes guarantee people’s achievement and prospect, and as it is one’s achievement that defines who are they, it can be said that how important the personality is. Hence, there is a reciprocal relationship between personality and the way in which we are defined or described by the society. In conclusion, I strongly agree with the idea that our personality describes who a person is on the basis of its importance in the way we are viewed by others and how we are evaluated by the society.

This seems band 6.5 to me.

essay about communication and personality

Thank you, MANJUSHA.

It is argued that we should understand a person by looking at their personalities. I agree that personality could partly present who that person is, but other factors in life should be considered as well.

We use personality to talk about a person from different angles. Sometimes we see a person positively and we say that they are hard working, friendly or active. It can also be some more complex description like empathetic, or sympathetic. People can also be described in a negative way, for example, we always say some people are selfish as they only think about themselves. Other people may be seeing the world from a negative perspective all the time, we thus call them a pessimistic person.

On the other hand, to know a person fully cannot only rely on the single side we see from their personality, there are several other aspects that should be considered as well. Firstly, the life experience is very important when we talk about one person. For example, a person who worked as a doctor may have better understand about life and death. Secondly, qualifications can be added to our understanding of a person, as that represents what academic knowledge and skills are they obtained. Finally, we also care about whether that person is polite and like sharing or not. The family backgrounds and cultural backgrounds can help us to know a person better too.

In conclusion, we may meet all kinds of people with different personalities. However, that does not represent who that person is, we need to know the person more by considering the other factors, such as life experience, qualifications, politeness or their various backgrounds.

essay about communication and personality

Hello MANJUSHA NAMBIAR. I’m so happy because I met your website. I started learning English three months ago. Can you estimate my first essay? Thanks a lot for your hard work.

The qualities and skills that a person requires to become successful in today’s world cannot be learned at a university or other academic institutions. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

I fully agree with this statement. It is obvious that to become a successful person in today’s world cannot be learned at a university or other academic institutions. First of all I would say that development today’s technologies let students or other people who want to get a lot of knowledge do it in their own homes. Nowadays exist lots of sites in worldwide web which help people get truly information if they want it. Except it development social media also helps people to get a necessary information. I mean such services like youtube, twitter, facebook and so on. You can type your question in searching field in youtube then watch video and understand answer with various examples. Judging from my own experience I can say that universities or other academic institutions do not guarantee that you will get a good knowledge or education. They do not guarantee that you will get brilliant and excellent results if you will study here. Most of all they teach how to pass different exams, tests, reports and so on. Often you do not need to understand some topic, task or questions. You must only do some actions and pass the exam. In conclusion, I would say that if you want to become a successful person in today’s world you must simply want it. It will be enough to achieve this aim. You are not born a successful man you will become this kind of person if really want it and do your best for it. And modern technologies only will help you on this track.

This seems band 6 to me.

The Relationship Between Communication and Personality

Executive summary.

This research analyzed the effects of the connection between communication and personality. In several studies, researchers found that individuals with certain psychological characteristics had higher happiness levels with their preferred communication channels, smartphone utilization, dispute resolution, company allegiance, and engagement ideas. Those who score higher on the personality traits of extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness also report greater satisfaction with their phone use and overall contact. Brand trust facilitates the connection between brand identification and brand allegiance, and agreeableness and conscientiousness raise dispute-resolution abilities. Personality theorists who focus on interactions also argue that words affect who we are.

Implications for conversation techniques, psychological development, and future studies are drawn from the study’s results. Understanding the significance of interaction ideas in psychology can help people develop greater self-awareness and more effective social skills while enhancing their communication abilities by better grasping the interplay between psychology and speaking. It can strengthen relationships by understanding the connection between speech and disposition. More study is needed to determine the impact of culture and gender on interpersonal skills and the effects of other psychological characteristics on communication and behavior.

In conclusion, the profound consequences of the link between speaking and character cannot be overstated. Personal and professional encounters can benefit from a deeper understanding of the connection between speech and personality. Research is needed into the function of other personality characteristics, the ripple effects of communication and personality on other facets of life, and the influences of culture and gender on these processes.

Introduction

Our communication skills and unique personalities shape everyday interactions with others and our environment. Communication is the two-way flow of information and ideas between people, while personality describes the distinctive traits that set us apart. Insights into the relationship between speech and character can improve interpersonal skills, health, and social progress.

Numerous studies have examined various facets of the correlation between speech and character, producing a rich and varied body of writing. Personality characteristics like agreeableness and extroversion have been studied for their potential involvement in influencing conversation patterns (Smith et al., 2018). Personality characteristics have also been related to smartphone use, “Individual personality scores…can predict actual behavior, manifested as mobile app usage frequencies” (Stachl et al., 2017).

Personality also plays a part in settlement of conflicts. “Personality traits govern individuals’ communication styles…which are critical components of effective communication and conflict resolution” (Taggart et al., 2019). Furthermore, Villagra et al. (2021) investigate the intermediary function of brand confidence in the relationship between brand identity and brand allegiance.

Carson (2019) elaborated on the importance of considering one’s own and other people’s interactions through the lens of interaction ideas of personality. A large and varied body of work studies the connection between speech and identity. Reading about communication and psychology studies can help us better understand our communication tendencies, fine-tune our word choice, and build stronger bonds with others. This study’s overarching goal is to summarize previous research on the link between communication and personality while discussing its ramifications and highlighting the need for more study in this area.

Literature Review

Overview of communication and personality.

To communicate, two or more people must share knowledge and thoughts. Both vocal and unconscious cues, including body language, motions, and facial expressions, are used in this complicated and multidimensional occurrence (Carson, 2019). Healthy relationships and productive teams require effective communication to form and remain in place (Smith et al., 2018).

Communication route happiness is crucial in assessing how effective communication is (Smith et al., 2018). How pleased people are with their communication experience can be influenced by several elements, including the ability to communicate with others in real time, the value of an input, and the simplicity of the communication route. Utilizing a smartphone to interact with others is another crucial aspect of communication because it offers people a handy and approachable means of doing so (Stachl et al., 2017).

The traits that define our personalities are what put us apart from one another. The occurrence is intricate and multidimensional, encompassing intrapersonal and interpersonal elements (Carson, 2019). Extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism are personality characteristics that can affect a person’s capacity to engage with others, which can affect conversation (Smith et al., 2018).

Certain personality characteristics can forecast how frequently people use their smartphones, which means personality traits can impact smartphone utilization (Stachl et al., 2017). Personality characteristics in courting partners can also influence the connection between resolving disputes and enjoying one another. (Taggart et al., 2019). Finally, personality characteristics can influence brand allegiance because confidence can buffer the connection between a brand’s personality and its commitment to its customers (Villagra et al., 2021).

The relationship between communication and personality

  • Communication channel satisfaction and personality

According to research on the connection between personality and communication channel happiness, people’s satisfaction levels with their communication experiences can be influenced by their personalities. Smith et al. (2018) examined the connection between personality characteristics like extraversion and agreeableness and communication route happiness. They discovered that while agreeableness was inversely correlated with communication route happiness, extraversion was favorably correlated.

These results indicate that more pleasant people may be less pleased with their conversation experience, whereas extroverted people are more apt to be. This suggests that various personality types may have varying degrees of happiness based on the communication channel used and that certain personality characteristics can affect communication channel pleasure.

According to Smith et al. (2018) research, knowing how communication channel happiness and personality are related can help people better understand their communication tastes and patterns and enhance their communication abilities. More extroverted people, for instance, might favor communication methods that enable them to engage with others in real time. In contrast, more amenable people might favor methods that enable them to receive input quickly. People can improve their communication skills and create healthy connections by recognizing the link between disposition and communication route happiness.

  • Smartphone usage and personality

According to research, certain behavioral traits can predict smartphone usage. First, Stachl et al. (2017) examined how extraversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness predict smartphone use. Smartphone use was favorably correlated with extraversion and conscientiousness but inversely with neuroticism. These results suggest that extroverted and careful people use their cell phones more often than anxious people. This implies that personality traits can affect smartphone usage and that various personality types may use cell phones for different reasons.

Stachl et al. (2017) found that knowing the connection between smartphone usage and disposition can help people handle and use their devices more productively. For instance, extroverts can use their cell phones to stay in touch with friends and family, while careful people can use them to stay ordered and efficient. People can better manage their gadgets and time by knowing how disposition affects smartphone usage.

In addition, Taggart et al. (2019) examined smartphone use and dating behavioral traits. Smartphone use was adversely linked with relationship happiness, but agreeableness and neuroticism mitigated this association. Smartphone users with high agreeableness and low neuroticism are less apt to have relationship issues. Lastly, Smartphone use may cause relationship issues for anxious, low-agreeable people. This emphasizes the relevance of smartphone usage and demeanor in human interactions.

Lastly, Villagra et al. (2021) examined brand identity, faith, and loyalty in smartphone usage. Brand identity directly affects brand loyalty, mediated by brand faith. Thus, smartphone users who thought their brand had a good demeanor were more loyal to it. These results imply that smartphone brand identity can affect how people use their devices and that brand faith is vital. Smartphone firms can improve their marketing and gadget design by grasping the connection between brand identity, trust, and loyalty.

  • Conflict resolution and personality

According to research, conflict settlement and relationship happiness in dating pairs may be moderated by behavioral traits. Taggart et al. (2019) examined how extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism mitigate the impacts of productive and detrimental dispute-resolution methods on relationship happiness. Extraversion and agreeableness increased relationship happiness, while neuroticism decreased it.

These results suggest that extroverted and pleasant people may have higher relationship happiness when using productive conflict resolution methods than anxious people. This implies that personality traits can affect dispute settlement strategies and that various personality types may react differently to different strategies.

Taggart et al. (2019) found that knowing conflict resolution and disposition can help people handle conflict and build healthy relationships. For instance, extroverts may benefit from active hearing and agreement, while pleasant people may benefit from empathy and comprehension. Understanding dispute settlement and disposition can improve communication and self-awareness.

Other studies have examined dispute settlement and behavior outside Taggart et al. (2019). Carvalho et al. (2018) examined how extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism affected intimate partnership dispute settlement. They found that pleasant people used collegial conflict resolution, while anxious people used competing and combative styles. Schröder-Abé et al. (2018) examined how neuroticism and agreeableness affected close friendship tolerance. Neuroticism made acceptance harder, while agreeableness made it easier.

These results imply that personality traits affect how people handle relationship disputes and the efficacy of various conflict resolution methods. For instance, pleasant people may benefit from collegial strategies like agreement and problem-solving, while anxious people may benefit from conflict-management strategies.

  • Brand personality and brand loyalty

According to research on the connection between brand identity and brand allegiance, brand confidence may mitigate that connection. Villagra et al. (2021) focused on the significance of brand confidence in their investigation into the connection between brand identity and brand allegiance. They discovered that brand confidence was an intermediary between brand identity and brand allegiance, favorably influencing both variables. These results suggest that brand allegiance and brand identity strongly correlate with brand confidence. They contend that people who believe in a brand are more likely to be devoted to it and that brand confidence can be affected by the demeanor of the brand.

According to research by Villagra et al. (2021), companies can better comprehend their consumers and develop more successful marketing strategies by knowing the connection between brand identity and brand devotion. Organizations can, for instance, use brand personality to build a powerful and favorable image, boosting brand confidence and devotion. Organizations can improve the results of their marketing campaigns by comprehending the connection between brand identity and brand devotion.

  • Interaction concepts of personality

The research on personality-interaction ideas implies that personality traits can affect how people engage with themselves and others. Carson (2019) proposes that encounters with others and oneself form identity. “Personality is a dynamic process of interaction between self-concepts, social systems, and situational contexts,” he says (Carson, 2019, p. 7).

This implies that our behavioral traits and encounters mold each other. Extraverts may prefer socializing, while introverts may prefer solitude. Agreeable people interact more, while unpleasant people contend. Lastly, Carson (2019) found that knowing the connection between interaction ideas of personality can help people understand themselves and enhance their contact with others. Understanding personality interplay can improve self-awareness and social skills.

Methodology

This study used a secondary data analysis methodology to examine previous studies on the connection between speech and personality. This study aimed to investigate how psychology and dialogue affect our daily lives and determine the ramifications of the results.

A thorough review of the literature was done in order to address the research questions, with a focus on five distinct areas: personality and smartphone usage, personality and conflict resolution, personality and brand loyalty, personality, and brand personality, and interaction concepts of personality. In order to perform the literature review, the NAIT library and a number of internet sources, such as PsychInfo, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar, were used.

The data was examined and combined after the literature study was finished. The data was classified, outlined, and arranged to respond to the study questions and come to useful findings. The data was also compared and contrasted to discover any themes or patterns in the results. The material was closely analyzed, and the data was verified for mistakes to ensure accurate results. Consulting specialists in the area, including academics and instructors, also confirmed the results. This study set out to address the research issues and determine the consequences of the results for communication and personality by thoroughly examining the literature and data analysis.

Several significant findings regarding the connection between language and temperament were discovered during the literature study. First, it was discovered that one’s attitude significantly affects the pleasure one takes in one’s interactions with others. Individuals high in extraversion, agreeableness, and thinking are more satisfied with their ways of conversation than those low in these characteristics.

Second, the literature study discovered that smartphone users could be affected by an individual’s temperament. The frequency with which people who are more extroverted, anxious, and sensitive use their phones is correlated with the degree to which they exhibit these characteristics. Third, the research found that temperament can influence one’s capacity to settle disagreements. Better dispute mediation abilities are associated with greater amounts of agreeableness, conscientiousness, and mental stability. Finally, the study’s findings showed that a business’s attitude substantially affects customer devotion to its brands. Customers who view a business as friendly and trustworthy are likelier to stick with that business. According to research into interaction theories, personality characteristics can influence one’s success in conversation. People who are more extroverted and agreeable have an easier time connecting with others through conversation.

In sum, the literature study revealed the significant impact attitude has on people’s communication encounters, smartphone utilization, dispute resolution abilities, brand allegiance, and conversation efficacy. These results have applications beyond pure research, including improving communication tactics, dispute settlement methods, and advertising efforts.

Implications

  • Implications for Communication Practices

The research’s findings have several consequences for communication strategies. First, people can improve their communication skills by learning how psychology and speech interact. For instance, people who score higher on extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness are more likely to find their contact routes satisfying and to use their cell phones more frequently. As a result, people can use this information to grasp their conversation better and modify their strategy. Additionally, people who score higher on agreeableness, conscientiousness, and mental steadiness typically have superior conflict resolution skills. Therefore, awareness of how disposition affects dialogue can make people more adept at resolving conflicts.

Second, knowing how speech and disposition interact can help people build stronger interpersonal bonds. For instance, understanding the function of brand identity can encourage people to develop stronger brand loyalty. Individuals can learn to engage with others more effectively by grasping the importance of interaction ideas in psychology. People can therefore use this information to develop and sustain wholesome interactions.

  • Implications for Personality Development

The results of this study also have ramifications for how people build their personalities. First, becoming more self-aware can be achieved by grasping the connection between speech and mentality. Individuals can recognize their communication patterns and modify their strategy by, for instance, comprehending the function of communication channel happiness and smartphone utilization in connection to personality. Individuals can recognize their strengths and flaws in these areas and modify their strategy by knowing the role of dispute resolution and brand allegiance connected to personality.

Second, knowing how communication and disposition are related can aid people in improving their conversation skills. Individuals can learn how to engage with others more effectively by, for instance, comprehending the importance of relationship ideas in psychology. People can therefore use this information to enhance their speaking abilities.

  • Implications for Future Research

The research’s results also point to a number of potential topics for further study. For instance, further study might examine how other psychological characteristics, like receptivity, affect dialogue. Further study may also examine how personality and dialogue affect other facets of life, including scholastic achievement and work happiness. Finally, the additional study might examine how society and gender relate to behavior and dialogue. As a result, this research has identified several crucial topics for further study.

Impact of Technology on Communication and Personality

One of the last parts of this context that cannot be overlooked is the interaction between the vast developing technology in communication and personality. Technology has changed how humans connect. Texting, emails, blogs, and social media have altered how people connect. These tools have transformed how people connect and convey themselves.

Technology affects dialogue and behavior in many ways. First, texting, emails, blogs, and social media have altered how people interact. These tools make contact fast and effective. People can swiftly and easily convey their ideas and emotions, allowing them to express themselves more directly. Technology has also expanded people’s social networks. People can learn about others’ traits and compare their conversation styles by engaging with more people. This has helped people comprehend themselves and others, improving dialogue and interactions.

Technology also lets people learn from other nations. Connecting with people from various cultures helps people understand how other cultures view and show identity. This can help people understand how various cultures view and convey their demeanor and communication style, improving conversation and interactions with diverse people. Finally, digital networks let people convey themselves better. People can share content that expresses their traits and hobbies. This has allowed people to convey themselves and their identities better, improving dialogue and partnerships.

The study examined the complex connection between speech and psychology and its consequences. The literature study shows that communication route happiness, smartphone usage, dispute resolution, brand personality, and interaction notions of personality affect how we speak with ourselves and others.

This study affects dialogue, mental growth, and future research. Understanding the relationship between speech and psychology can improve self-awareness, conversation, and brand loyalty. Understanding the link between communication and psychology can help people define their communication style, modify their strategy, and improve relationships.

The study also identified several important research areas. For example, the role of other personality traits, how communication and personality affect other areas of life, and how society and gender affect communication and personality.

To conclude, speech and personality are closely linked, which has major consequences for our daily lives. Understanding the link between communication and psychology can help us become more self-aware and better speakers, which can improve our personal and work interactions.

Communication and Personality Essay Example

Negotiation is an important technique that each individual possess, some are quite remarkable at it and others lack the right steps. However, knowing when and how to negotiation is important especially in the world today, it is guaranteed that at some point one will find themselves right in the middle of a negotiation. As humans we tend to negotiate about almost everything, which can be the sale of a home, to save money on a certain item, or to purchase a vehicle.

For a negotiation to be successful one must maintain not only good communication but also a good personality, the more charming ones personality is in a negotiation the more likely it will be successful. This paper will analyze a situation in which the writer is t

rying to buy a vehicle. The roles of communication and personality in negotiation will be analyzed, as well as how they contribute to or detract from the negotiation. Negotiating In October of 2006 Lynda Padilla turned 19, at which time she decided that she wanted a brand new car.

She headed to a Power Chevrolet, a car lot with not only brand new vehicles but used as well. Lynda decided that used was not what she wanted, she had already been through two used vehicles in the last year and it was time that she not only had something she worked hard for but also something she felt that she deserved. As Lynda was looking at the 2007 Chevy Malibu’s a salesman name Eric walked up to her and asked if he could assist her in any way. In response Lynda said yes,

would like to purchase a vehicle for my birthday.

Eric was more than pleased to assist Lynda, he asked her to follow him back to his office where he collected her driver’s license, ran her credit, and collect her employment information, as she filled out a very detailed application. Once both parties were finished, Eric got up and walked into his supervisor’s office, they both came out and explained to Lynda that although her credit score was incredible for a 19 year old, she had never made a large purchase; therefore she would not be able to purchase a new vehicle that day, however the supervisor had another plan in mind.

Negotiation took way; Eric asked how much Lynda had to put down, she replied with $500 and used Oldsmobile. Which seemed to be enough, Eric walked out onto the car lot and came back to Lynda with a white 2006 Chevy Cobalt. It was all wrong to Lynda; she climbed into it and was horrified. This will not work she told Eric, I want a new car, I want it to be burgundy, with automatic windows, a sunroof, a nice radio, with a good sound system in it, I want it to have low miles, while at the same time having a low interest rate and car payment.

If she could not have this then she was going to leave. Eric asked her to wait and went in to talk to his supervisor. Both Eric and his supervisor came back out and explained to Lynda if she wanted to have a brand new vehicle she would have to lease, she also

need the $500 down plus the trade in. Lynda agreed to these terms and was led over to the lot of brand new Cobalts, where Eric explained that she would not be able to have just any vehicle but she was limited to the Cobalt model. Again Lynda agreed and went ahead and picked one out.

It was a beautiful 2007 burgundy model; it had only been test driven and had a mere 17 miles on it. Both parties then headed back into the office, where Lynda was told she would have a $500 car payment, this would not be acceptable Lynda explained. She told Eric that yes she worked two jobs but had other obligations. It was discussed and agreed that it could be lowered to $400 a month. After everything Lynda drove away with her brand new Cobalt, had a $400 payment with an 11% interest rate.

Analyze the Roles of Communication and Personality in Negotiation Communication is more than just the words one speaks; it is how one conducts themselves, the position of their arms, their facial expression. There are many types of communication, negotiating is an interpersonal type, which is communication through both verbal and nonverbal techniques. Both of the nonverbal and the verbal communication have a significant impact on the objectives of the negotiation. According to Lewicki, Saunders, and Barry 2006), many of the most important factors that shape a negotiations result do not occur during the negotiation; they occur before the parties start to negotiate or shape the context around the negotiation (p. 9). In fact it can be said that the better a person can communicate

the better that person will be at negotiating. The use of foul language or derogatory sentences makes one look ignorant and does not make the negotiation successful but in the end a win – lose situation. One must not just keep their communicating skills in mind but also their personality; which plays a vital role in negotiations.

A charming personality will go a long way in a negotiation and could be the link to success. It is important that when in a negotiation one remains calm, is sincere, and remains honest at all times. When someone is dishonest or seems to be overly competitive the trust between the people negotiating is diminished and coming to a solution is much more difficult. Like Lynda was when negotiating the vehicle she wanted, instead of getting angry Lynda remained calm, her disappointment was not vivid in her body language she just told Eric what she wanted otherwise the deal was off.

Once this was done she was given what she wanted, in the end it was a win – win situation; the dealership leased a brand new vehicle and Lynda drove off with a new vehicle. Conclusion In conclusion it was Lynda’s prime goal to purchase for her 19th birthday, it was brought to her attention by the dealership that she could not purchase the exact vehicle she wanted, because it was beyond her means. However, Lynda was delivered with an alternative option of leasing a brand new vehicle which was not only a better fit for her financially but also overall.

It was communicated to Lynda upfront that she would not be able to

purchase a vehicle due to her lack of credit history but after all of her options were laid out on the table Lynda was still able to walk out on the lot and pick the exact car she wanted. In the end Eric the car salesman gave Lynda a legitimate alternative and the negotiation process ended in a successful win – win manner. If the certain negotiation tactics that Lynda used were not used then the outcome may have been much different, Lynda could have been stuck with a contract in which she did not want or worse a payment she could not afford.

Personal Experience of Communication and Negotiation Essay

Introduction.

Proper communication skills have always been recognized as a vital tool in everyday life. Of more importance is the need to understand the personality of the person one is communicating with as this makes the communicator decide on the best form of communication to use. The personality type can work for the success or failure of a communication process and the importance of personality is evident as it is used to gauge the effectiveness of a negotiator who is expected to understand the personality of the person that he is negotiating with in order to sustain a long-term or successful negotiation. Successful companies and institutions use negotiation as a device for keeping their prices competitive, lowering expenses, making sales and maximizing their profit margins. Such firms use the negotiating process to find the best deals with their clients and suppliers and in other services such as advertising and transportation. Communication is the single most important aspect of a negotiation process, and the personality of the two parties is a major factor in determining the direction that the negotiation takes. A negotiator can therefore use his personality to add dimension to the message delivery thus making the process come out as sincere.

The aim of the paper is to analyze the roles of communication and negotiation in the success or failure of a negotiation process that I had participated in earlier. Personality affects the type of communication in that it makes interpretation of the message to be biased.

Description of a Negotiation Situation

During the last holidays, I had the chance of participating in a negotiation process when my parents told me told to sell the family car as they were planning to buy another one but were short of money. I was supposed to find a buyer then negotiate with him on the buying price in a period of three weeks. I placed an advertisement in the local newspaper three days later and immediately received calls from willing buyers who wanted to make inquiries on the buying price and the details of the car. After receiving calls from numerous people, I settled on four buyers, three men and a lady, who appeared serious from their conversation and their offers were close to that projected by my parents. I agreed to meet them on different days of the week, one per day. The first two men I met had good offers but first required that the interiors and the tires be replaced, which I found rather expensive and would lead to selling the car at a loss had I done as they requested.

My third negotiation was with the lady buyer, the experience was extremely better than the first two; she had an offer that was 10 percent above my target price and made no demands on the refurbishment of the car. Her request was that the terms of payment be of a hire-purchase type, she was willing to pay half of the total cost on cash basis and the rest in installments over a six-month period. After negotiations, she adjusted her down-payment to 70 percent. I promised to call her after two days as I needed to discuss this with my parents. The last negotiation was with a buyer who wanted a trade-in and complete the transaction by paying 40 percent of the amount we agreed on. We agreed to pay him a visit and view the car he wanted to trade in the following day. We visited the buyer who wanted a trade-in and inspected the car which looked new but rather small. It had a passenger limit of four while my parents wanted a five-seater car, so we rejected his offer and opted for the lady’s offer. We further negotiated the deal and finally agreed on a 75 percent down payment, the balance payable in four months. We delivered the car a week later after receiving the down payment.

Communications in Negotiations

Considering the fundamentals, negotiation is a type of interpersonal communication. Communication types, both verbal and non-verbal, are vital to realizing negotiation goals and in the resolution of conflict (Barry et al, 2006). Negotiations can take place in different platforms, and each platform requires the application of a variety of communication skills. When negotiating for the sale of our car, I decided that the most suitable form of communication would be face-to-face, as it would allow the buyers to have a chance of viewing the car. This form of communication benefitted both the potential buyers and me; the buyers had a chance of inspecting the various parts of the car, as this would have not been possible through a phone. I also benefitted from this communication form as I had a protracted chat with the buyers, exploring other avenues like trade-ins and hire-purchase-type transactions. Such long negotiations would have not been possible through the phone, which should be brief and straight to the point. Communicating through the phone would have taken away the ability to negotiate for better deals by both parties, besides, the willingness of a buyer to travel and view the car showed how serious they were about making the purchase. I applied my communication skills and eventually managed to realize a breakthrough in the process.

Personality in Negotiations

Personality greatly affects the outcome of a negotiation process. Before beginning a negotiation, it is worth noting that all of us have different personalities and these must be accommodated during the process. During the negotiation process, I studied the personality of the buyers and this led to the success of the car sale. A study of the personality of the customers entailed taking note of their behavior and character traits, for example, from my conversation with the lady, I learned that the initial 50 percent offer she made could be adjusted to a higher value. This was justified when she increased it to 70 and finally to 75 percent. Understanding and appreciating one another’s personalities helps avoid conflict during a negotiation, knowledge of the personality of the buyers also helped me decide on whether to terminate or continue with the negotiation. I realized that the first two buyers were not serious about making the purchase and decided to end the negotiation prematurely.

A combination of proper communication skills and knowledge of the personality helps in the successful completion of a negotiation process. Knowledge of one’s personality is also important as it helps one to decide on the best way to deliver messages (Lee, 2007). In order to have a successful negotiation, key messages must be delivered with utmost sincerity by both parties.

Communication

News plays an important part in most people’s lives. why is news so important to people why is so much news dedicated to bad news should the news focus on the food news instead.

Take a look at the model answer.

The news is a vital way of communicating information in everyone’s lives. This essay believes that being updated to current events makes news essential to our existence. Firstly, this essay will discuss the importance of news to the general public, secondly, why there is a large portion of news devoted to horrific events and lastly, why we should focus more on reporting positive stories.

On the one hand, people should rely on news channels to be updated on current events because somehow the general population is always affected by it. Information we have learned from news broadcasts may affect our choices whether we vote for one person or another, learning about a place that has a conflict or to know what is happening with world economics. For example, Pulse Asia in 2015 reported that 98% of presidential candidates in the Philippines counted on media coverage to reach potential voters all over the country.

On the other hand, many news networks choose to report about negative occurrences simply because of gaining higher ratings. They rely on the numbers of people who tune in to their news programs as this generates a lot of commercials, thus results in larger revenues since companies pay a lot of money for exposure. For example, an article released by GMA news Philippines in 2014 reported that 89% of their audiences would remember news about horrific crimes rather than news about the economic growth of the country.

Lastly, in my opinion, I believe that broadcasters should concentrate more on showing news that inspires other people. Hearing about positive news motivates viewers to have a better view of the world and in society. When disasters strike, often widespread news of people donating food and blankets, can promote the cause and motivate others to get involved. For instance, in my own personal experience in 2016 during the wrath of Haiyan in the Philippines, I was inspired by a news story asking for help, so I sent food and money as a small contribution.

In conclusion, people should be informed about the latest happenings around the globe whether it is good or bad news. News can also inspire people to work together in times of conflict, during wars, natural disasters and other humanitarian plights.

essay about communication and personality

Pre-Hire Personality Tests Set Legal Challenges for Employers

Anna Saraie

Whether employees are a good personality fit within the team, department, and overall culture of a workplace is an important factor in a company’s success.

Employers increasingly are requiring applicants to take personality tests as part of the recruiting process. The integration of artificial intelligence tools into personality assessments has both revitalized employer interest in using these tests for recruiting and complicated the legal landscape for their use.

But before using preemployment personality tests, employers should understand the legal and practical considerations of implementing such tests.

Legal Considerations

Employers should be aware that various laws may be implicated by using personality testing at the preemployment stage.

For starters, any preemployment testing must comply with federal anti-discrimination laws, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. These laws permit certain preemployment testing if it meets statutory requirements and is nondiscriminatory.

Employee selection guidelines codified in 29 C.F.R. 1607.1 in 1978 intended to assist employers in complying with the requirements of federal law that prohibit employers from discriminating against employees based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.

Employers aren’t strictly bound, but courts weigh the guidelines in assessing the validity of various employment tests. Any validation of preemployment personality testing should be conducted in line with these guidelines.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued two pieces of technical guidance in the past two years that build on the guidance to specifically address the use of artificial intelligence in hiring tools.

On May 18, 2023, the EEOC issued guidance on the effect of software, algorithms, and artificial intelligence used in employment selection procedures under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. And on May 12, 2022, the EEOC issued guidance on how an employer’s use of software that relies on algorithmic decision-making may violate requirements under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The EEOC advises employers using pre-employment testing software with AI or other algorithmic decision-making tools to ensure that they know how the software was developed, as well as evaluation of whether such selection tools causes a substantially lower selection rate for individuals with a characteristic protected by Title VII.

The EEOC advises employers to consider asking the following questions about a pretesting tool when considering ADA requirements:

  • If the tool requires applicants or employees to engage a user interface, did the vendor make the interface accessible to as many individuals with disabilities as possible?
  • Are the materials presented to job applicants or employees in alternative formats? If so, which formats?
  • Are there any kinds of disabilities for which the vendor won’t be able to provide accessible formats? If so, the employer may have to provide them.
  • Did the vendor attempt to determine whether the use of the algorithm disadvantages individuals with disabilities?

In addition to federal laws, employers should be cognizant of applicable state and local laws, including privacy and bias concerns. For example, New York City Local Law 144, which took effect on Jan. 1, 2023, prohibits employers and employment agencies from using an automated employment decision tool in New York City unless they ensure a bias audit was done and provide required notices.

Personality tests may be subject to this law, and other state and local governments will likely follow suit and adopt similar regulations.

Practical Considerations

Employers wishing to incorporate pre-hire personality testing will need to assess and answer the following practical questions when implementing personality tests:

  • What are the company’s goals in incorporating the testing in its recruiting processes?
  • What personality traits will the company be testing for? Why are these traits important? Is there an alternative method for evaluating these traits?
  • Which applicants will be required to take the test? Will the company require all applicants to submit, or will the company require tests for only certain positions? Will the company require tests for applicants regardless of where they’re located?
  • Will the test use AI tools?
  • At what point in the recruitment process will applicants take the test?
  • Is the company concerned with recruiting talent? Could requiring pre-hire personality tests discourage candidates from applying?
  • Does the company already require other pre-hiring tests, such as drug testing or background checks? If so, would adding the additional test discourage candidates from applying?
  • Which personality test will the company use? If so, which format will be used; how will this test measure the personality traits that are important to the company; and has this test been properly validated?
  • How will the test results be used by hiring personnel?
  • What steps will the company take to ensure tests continue to comply with applicable law, including ensuring that the tests, over time, don’t disparately affect a protected group?

Outside Vendors

Employers may use outside vendors to implement pre-employment personality testing. But employers should be vigilant in asking and confirming that any testing complies with the applicable laws, because the EEOC has clearly indicated that employers can be liable for violations of federal anti-discrimination laws even if an outside vendor developed the software.

At a minimum, employers must ensure that the personality testing has been properly validated. Further, employers should ask the vendors to provide the actual test questions and review these questions with employment counsel to ensure the questions don’t infringe on an employee’s rights under applicable anti-discrimination and privacy laws.

Finally, employers should work with the vendor to monitor and assess test results while the pre-employment personality tests are required. This will ensure the testing doesn’t disparately affect a protected class.
