These companies, such as Apple, Samsung, Google, and Twitter, have offices in almost every country. I guess the company may prepare its commercials like they are unrivaled, or the only competitor is themselves rather than giving places to the other firms.

There are some of the products, and the company prefers to use with their smartphones. First, smartwatches come to hand. They are not confused with a normal watch because of their good designs. It looks chic, and it is very practical to use. The consumers do not need to get their phones out from their pocket most of the time, because they connect their smartwatch to a smartphone by Bluetooth and use the applications to their job. The company also offers wireless headphones. It is more useful while doing exercises, running, etc. Samsung makes an effort to provide qualified products to its consumers.

Samsung stepped into the technology with the television. Its improvement in smart TVs started in 2008 with the birth of content-oriented TV that can make the consumer connect the internet or USB devices (Kour 11). Nowadays, when we look at the Samsung Smart TVs, we can easily be aware of high video quality. 4K screens make the people feel themselves inside of the TV. The company leads innovations also in white goods. The dishwashers provide water saving, and the washing machines provide time savings. The refrigerators keep the foods fresh for a long time. The company tries to help people at any moment in their lives.

Samsung has a wide range of target audience's ages in terms of smartphones. In my opinion, the company can divide this range into three and produce the devices in this way. Because different ranges need or want different features on the phone. The businessmen hope to access their emails easily, and the young generation wishes a better CPU while playing games. The company may decide the cost of the products according to the country's society's financial conditions. By decreasing the price too few, the sales can increase—people think about how these prices affect themselves economically.

Recommendations for Samsung

In light of this information, one may readily infer that Samsung is a multi-faceted company that is concentrated in various fields such as smartphones, televisions, white goods, and so on. Therefore, although the company has overall brand recognition among different customer segmentation, there does not exist a single field of production that Samsung is unquestionably the number one brand. In other words, the company targets to be an "okay" brand rather than being the superstar. For instance, and arguably, Apple is the superstar in the smartphone industry, or Tesla is another leading player who seems to be unbeatable in space sciences for a long period of time. That is, the popularity of companies in social media society has become a determinant in consumer behavior as more people have tended to be a part of this digital world. When considered the fact that social media marketing has already dominated the other marketing channels like television, one may recommend that Samsung should consider concentrating on a single business field. Similar to Samsung, Apple also manufactures smartphones, televisions, and many other assets. However, investing merely on iPhone ads is both advantageous and feasible for the company because the product is like a brand-signature which is popular across the world. Therefore, I believe that Samsung needs a signature-product. Arguably, neither the Galaxy series or cutting-edge white goods have become a signature brand across the world. For a vast organization like Samsung, there should be a characteristic product that reflects the brand culture, image, recognition, and, most importantly, organization values.

Concept of Company:

The Indian Companies Act, 1956 defines a company as follows:

“A company is a company registered under this Act, or under any of the previous company laws.”

Point of Comment:

One most significant feature of a company which could be inferred from this legal definition is that a company must always be registered i.e. without registration under law, no company could be formed. In fact, law alone can create a company.

We can define a company as follows:

Company is an artificial person created by law, having an entity absolutely distinct from the entity of its owners (i.e members); and characterised by features of perpetual succession, common seal and limited liability. 

The notion of company along with its salient features could be depicted as follows:

Features of Company:

A company can be best defined and described, in terms of its features, which as follows:

(i) Artificial Legal Person:

A company is a creation of law. Hence it is an artificial legal person. Being an artificial person, it has no physical body and no soul that are possessed by natural persons.

However, for its own business purposes the company:  

1. Can hold property in its own name.

2. Is competent to enter into contracts

3. Can sue and be sued by others.

(ii) Separate Entity from the Entity of Members:

The company has an entity or a personality, which is absolutely independent and separate from the entity of its members.

The implications of separate entity concept of the company are:

(a) Members are not the joint owners of the assets of the company. All assets of the company belong to the company itself.

(b) The company continues to exist; even if all its members die.

(c) Members can file a suit on the company; and the company can file a suit on members.

(d) Members are not agents of the company.

(iii) Minimum and Maximum no. of Persons:

The minimum number of persons required to form a company is two, in case of a private company; and seven-in case of a public company. The maximum number of persons is fifty, in case of a private company. However, there is no limit to the maximum number of persons, in case of a public company.

(iv) Perpetual Succession:

A company enjoys perpetual succession i.e. continuous life without interruptions, for all times to come in future. The life of the company is independent of the life of its members. Members may come and go; but the company continues like the flow of a running river. The life of a company comes to an end, only though prescribed legal procedures of winding up. Till that time, the company continues.

(v) Limited Liability:

The most popular type of a company is a company with limited liability. Limited liability implies that the maximum liability of a member is limited to the unpaid value of shares held by a member. For example, if a members holds 10 shares of 100 each and on which he has paid @ Rs. 70 per share; then his maximum liability Rs. 300 (i.e. 10 x 30) i.e. @ Rs 30 per share on 10 shares held by him.

(vi) Management by Board of Directors:

Since a company is an artificial person; it needs some human agency to manage its affairs. This human agency is provided in form of a Board of Directors. Each company must have a Board of Directors. Directors are the elected representatives of the members of the company.

Hence, through a Board of Directors, a company is managed in a democratic manner i.e. managed by members through their elected representatives called directors (collectively called Board of Directors).

(vii) Capital-Consisting of Shares:

Capital of company is divided into parts-each part being called a share. Hence capital of a company is called share capital. In fact, in a company capital is contributed by all those persons who buy its shares. A person can buy any number of shares according to his financial capacity. Because of joint contribution of capital, a company is technically called a joint stock company.

(viii) Transferability of Shares:

Shares in a company are freely transferable i.e. a person who no longer desires to hold shares of a company can transfer these to somebody else. In a private company, there may be certain restrictions to transfer shares; but the right to transfer shares is not denied by the company.

(ix) Common Seal:

Every company has a common seal with the name of the company engraved on it. Common seal is equivalent to the signatures of the company. Since the company, being an artificial person cannot sign; the seal of the company must be affixed on all documents etc. where signatures of the company are needed-in order to bind the company.

(x) Compulsory Audit:

Accounts of all companies are subject to compulsory audit to safeguard the interest of its owners (i.e. members) who have no actual hand, in the management of the company.

A Note on Public and Private Companies:

One most outstanding classification of companies is public companies and private companies; which are defined and distinguished below:

(i) Public Company:

A Public Company is One:

(a) Which is not a private company?

(b) Which has a minimum paid-up capital of Rs 5 lakhs?

(c) Which is a private company, being a subsidiary of a public company?

Point of Explanation:

A company which holds more than 51% share capital of another company or which controls the composition of the Board of Directors of that company is called a holding company. The other company in which shareholding is held by the holding company or in which composition of Board of Directors is controlled by the holding company, is called the subsidiary company.

(ii) Private Company:

A Private Company is One:

(a) Which limits the number of its members to a maximum of fifty; excluding present and past employees?

(b) Which prohibits any invitation to public to subscribe to its shares/debentures?

(c) Which prohibits any invitation or acceptance of deposits from public?

(d) Which restricts the rights of its members to transfer shares?

(e) Which has a minimum paid-up capital of Rs one lakh?

Privileges of a Private Company:

Some important privileges of a private company are as follows:

(i) Number of Members:

A private company can be formed with only two members.

(ii) Number of Directors:

It requires only two directors.

(iii) Index of Members:

It need not keep an index of members.

(iv) Privileges vis-a-vis Directors:

(a) There are no restrictions on the appointment and remuneration of directors, in a private company.

(b) A private company can give loans to directors, without the permission of the Government.

(c) All the directors of a private company can be permanent.

(v) Operational Privileges:

(a) A private company can allot shares before receipt of minimum subscription.

(b) It can commence business immediately after registration, without being required to obtain a Certificate of Commencement of Business.

(c) It need not hold a Statutory Meeting and file a Statutory Report.

Advantages of a Company:

Following are the major advantages of the company form of business organisation:

(i) Huge Financial Resources:

A company is able to accumulate huge finances from the public; and undertake projects beyond the contemplation of any other form of business organisation. Because of huge financial resources, the company is able to implement schemes for growth and expansion of the company.

(ii) Limited Liability:

Members of a company enjoy the advantage of limited liability. The fact of limited liability induces public to invest in companies. This advantage of limited liability is the exclusive advantage available only with the corporate form of business organisation.

(iii) Permanent Life:

Company is the most stable form of business organisation; as companies enjoy perpetual succession or permanent life. This advantage of perpetual succession is socially desirable too. Permanent business in the corporate form provides a perennial flow of goods and services to the community and generates numerous employment opportunities.

(iv) Democratic Management:

Company management is democratic in nature. Company is managed by a Board of Directors; directors being elected representatives of owners i.e. members of the company.

(v) Efficient Management:

To conduct its operations, a company requires professionally expert managers, in various areas of its functioning. A company can afford these experts, because of its huge financial resources. These experts lead the operational life of the company along most profitable and efficient lines.

Moreover, professional managers, because of their educational background and modem outlook pay due attention to discharging social responsibilities by the company.

(vi) Transferability of Shares:

Shares in a company are freely transferable. As such, many persons feel like investing in companies; because they can liquidate their investment, as per their choice. Because of the transferability of shares, more profitable companies can attract capital from less profitable ones.

(vii) Economies of Large Scale:

Companies undertake production and marketing activities on a large scale. As such, they can reap full advantages of large scale operation; a part of which advantage may be passed on to consumers, in the form of cheaper products and services.

(viii) Capital Formation:

The company form of business organisation is responsible for capital formation in the economy. Savings by people are encouraged by companies; because of a desire of people to buy shares of companies. Investment by people in the shares/debentures of companies enables companies to undertake big business projects – directly contributing to capital formation in the economy.

(ix) Public Confidence:

Companies enjoy public trust and confidence because of regulation of companies by the Companies Act. Disclosure of profit and financial position by companies, through publication of Final Accounts further helps to build public confidence in companies. It is this trust and confidence which induces people to invest in companies, leading to business prosperity-vital for the economy.

(x) Goodwill for Self and the Nation:

Big companies enjoy huge goodwill-nationally and internationally. Favourable image of big companies increases the goodwill of the nation too in the international commercial market.

Limitations of a Company:

Following are the major limitations of the company form of business organisation:

(i) Legal Formalities:

Numerous legal and procedural formalities have to be complied with for the formation of company. This discourages many enterprising people to think of starting a company.

(ii) Excessive Governmental Control:

Companies are subject to excessive Governmental control through various provisions of the Companies Act. This reduces flexibility of operations in a company; which is most necessary to fully exploit business opportunities for gains.

(iii) Lack of Motivation:

Companies are managed by hired professional managers, who often lack motivation to work. In fact, they do not have as much motivation to work as owners would have, in case they (i.e. owners) were allowed to manage the company, on their own.

(iv) Oligarchic Management:

Company management is democratic only in theory. In practice, it represents the worst type of oligarchic management (i.e. management by a few). Due to a large number of members and their indifferent attitude, a small group of members operates the affairs of the company-more to its own advantage and neglecting the good of the large body of members.

(v) Growth of Monopolistic Tendencies:

Companies, because of their large size, lead to growth of monopolistic tendencies. The larger, in fact, is the size of a company; the more is the possibility of it assuming monopolistic power. Because of their monopolistic position, companies may never hesitate in resorting to consumer exploitation, through charging very high prices for their products and services.

(vi) Delays in Decision-Making:

Red tape, bureaucracy and excessive provisions of the Companies Act, because delayed decision-making in a company. The company, as such, practically loses all flexibility of operations; and is unable to take full advantage of momentary opportunities for gain.

(vii) Corrupt Management:

Now-a-clays, in most of the companies, managements are highly corrupt. They misuse their position and manipulate the working of the company to their own petty self-interests. In this way, innocent public are cheated and deprived of due advantage of their hard-earned money invested in the company.

(viii) Lack of Secrecy:

There is lack of secrecy in corporate affairs. Public can inspect important documents of the company by paying the prescribed fee. Annual Accounts of the company have to be published. This lack of secrecy does not allow companies to take full advantage of their trade secrets.

(ix) Political Corruption:

Because of their huge financial resources, companies field their own candidates to seek elections to the Parliament or State legislatures or other decision-making bodies. Having won elections, these candidates make available undue advantages to the ‘big-bosses’ of the company. Thus companies are largely responsible for corrupting the political system of the country.

A survey of 3,000 global executives suggests that it’s not strategic thinking that sets them apart. It’s their inclination to move quickly.

When you cannot base strategy on reasonably certain premises — or when those reasonable premises are undone by unforeseeable events — what is a company to do? You still have to make plans, allocate capital, and invest for the future. Some argue that agility is the key to thriving in disruptive times, but if all you do is pivot, you are just going around in circles. The annual AlixPartners Disruption Index surveys 3,000 global executives about what is knocking them sideways. Among other things, it shows that three out of five say that it is increasingly challenging to know which disruptive forces to prioritize. Amid all this, there is a group of companies doing very well: about one in five said their companies lead their industry in revenue growth. In this article, the authors dig into that 2024 data to find out what sets these companies apart, and what other companies can learn from them about setting growth strategy in an uncertain world.

1. Think About Why You Want This Job in Particular

Research the role and figure out why it interests you. Think about how the job description matches your skill set, ambitions and what you genuinely like most about the business.

For example, some of these may apply:

• The responsibilities of the role align with your personal interests. Ensure you can link what interests you about the job role to specific examples. For example, if you are applying for the role of Editorial Assistant at Love Knitting Magazine, you could mention that you are a prolific knitter and you edited a student magazine at university.
• Opportunities for progression. For example, internal qualifications, networking opportunities or management training schemes.

However, make sure you listen carefully to the question you are being asked; some will require a different answer than you first expect. Never repeat a pre-prepared response without listening carefully to the question. For example:

“What qualities can you bring to this role?”

This question differs because it focuses less on what you personally think about the role. Instead, talk about your specific achievements and how you can apply your skills to the job.

Example answer:

As well as my ability to manage and administer pension claims, I have a unique background in data management and analysis.

For example, in my previous role, I was part of a project recording and analysing the causes of delayed pension payments. This led to the implementation of improved payment administration policies. I will be looking for opportunities to use my skills within this role.

This answer is good because the candidate has specified a unique skill which will set them apart from the other candidates and backed it up with an example.

“Why should we hire you?”

• Whether you will do the job better than everybody else.
• Whether you will fit into the company’s culture.

It differs from the ‘Why do you want to work here?’ question because it is less about your personal interest in the job and more about what you can do for the company.

Come up with at least three reasons you stand out from the crowd. For example:

• You have experience in this industry;
• Your past achievements demonstrate a proven track record;
• You have relevant awards;
• You have relevant qualifications or further education;
• Your soft skills (such as communication skills) are especially strong (and proven);
• You have specific technical skills (such as knowledge of certain programming languages).

“How are you a good fit for this company?”

This question differs because it focuses on your understanding of the company’s culture and what skills you can contribute.

Ensure you research the company and its values. Think about how your own goals and values coincide. Then answer the question by:

• Describing your interpretation of the company’s culture.
• Explaining how you fit into that culture (including specific examples).

Here are some ideas to think about when interpreting the company’s culture:

• Does the company value collaboration?
• Does the company value internal progression?
• Are there any mentoring schemes?
• What is the company’s attitude to work/life balance?

I love that [company] promotes supportive attitudes in its employees. At my current job, we also have a culture of support, especially when a tight deadline is coming up.

For example, I recently worked two weeks’ overtime to help a colleague compile the civil disclosure for a massive fraud case.

I love how stimulating and exciting that kind of work can be. Therefore, I think I will fit in well within your team where everyone comes together to work to similar tight deadlines.

Final Thoughts

Preparing to answer interview questions can be daunting, but follow the advice in this article and you will arrive at your interview prepared to impress. Remember:

• Research the company and the position thoroughly.
• Structure your answer in two parts: first, outline why you want the job. Then outline why you want to work at the company.

That Viral Essay Wasn’t About Age Gaps. It Was About Marrying Rich.

But both tactics are flawed if you want to have any hope of becoming yourself..

Women are wisest, a viral essay in New York magazine’s the Cut argues , to maximize their most valuable cultural assets— youth and beauty—and marry older men when they’re still very young. Doing so, 27-year-old writer Grazie Sophia Christie writes, opens up a life of ease, and gets women off of a male-defined timeline that has our professional and reproductive lives crashing irreconcilably into each other. Sure, she says, there are concessions, like one’s freedom and entire independent identity. But those are small gives in comparison to a life in which a person has no adult responsibilities, including the responsibility to become oneself.

This is all framed as rational, perhaps even feminist advice, a way for women to quit playing by men’s rules and to reject exploitative capitalist demands—a choice the writer argues is the most obviously intelligent one. That other Harvard undergraduates did not busy themselves trying to attract wealthy or soon-to-be-wealthy men seems to flummox her (taking her “high breasts, most of my eggs, plausible deniability when it came to purity, a flush ponytail, a pep in my step that had yet to run out” to the Harvard Business School library, “I could not understand why my female classmates did not join me, given their intelligence”). But it’s nothing more than a recycling of some of the oldest advice around: For women to mold themselves around more-powerful men, to never grow into independent adults, and to find happiness in a state of perpetual pre-adolescence, submission, and dependence. These are odd choices for an aspiring writer (one wonders what, exactly, a girl who never wants to grow up and has no idea who she is beyond what a man has made her into could possibly have to write about). And it’s bad advice for most human beings, at least if what most human beings seek are meaningful and happy lives.

But this is not an essay about the benefits of younger women marrying older men. It is an essay about the benefits of younger women marrying rich men. Most of the purported upsides—a paid-for apartment, paid-for vacations, lives split between Miami and London—are less about her husband’s age than his wealth. Every 20-year-old in the country could decide to marry a thirtysomething and she wouldn’t suddenly be gifted an eternal vacation.

Which is part of what makes the framing of this as an age-gap essay both strange and revealing. The benefits the writer derives from her relationship come from her partner’s money. But the things she gives up are the result of both their profound financial inequality and her relative youth. Compared to her and her peers, she writes, her husband “struck me instead as so finished, formed.” By contrast, “At 20, I had felt daunted by the project of becoming my ideal self.” The idea of having to take responsibility for her own life was profoundly unappealing, as “adulthood seemed a series of exhausting obligations.” Tying herself to an older man gave her an out, a way to skip the work of becoming an adult by allowing a father-husband to mold her to his desires. “My husband isn’t my partner,” she writes. “He’s my mentor, my lover, and, only in certain contexts, my friend. I’ll never forget it, how he showed me around our first place like he was introducing me to myself: This is the wine you’ll drink, where you’ll keep your clothes, we vacation here, this is the other language we’ll speak, you’ll learn it, and I did.”

These, by the way, are the things she says are benefits of marrying older.

The downsides are many, including a basic inability to express a full range of human emotion (“I live in an apartment whose rent he pays and that constrains the freedom with which I can ever be angry with him”) and an understanding that she owes back, in some other form, what he materially provides (the most revealing line in the essay may be when she claims that “when someone says they feel unappreciated, what they really mean is you’re in debt to them”). It is clear that part of what she has paid in exchange for a paid-for life is a total lack of any sense of self, and a tacit agreement not to pursue one. “If he ever betrayed me and I had to move on, I would survive,” she writes, “but would find in my humor, preferences, the way I make coffee or the bed nothing that he did not teach, change, mold, recompose, stamp with his initials.”

Reading Christie’s essay, I thought of another one: Joan Didion’s on self-respect , in which Didion argues that “character—the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life—is the source from which self-respect springs.” If we lack self-respect, “we are peculiarly in thrall to everyone we see, curiously determined to live out—since our self-image is untenable—their false notions of us.” Self-respect may not make life effortless and easy. But it means that whenever “we eventually lie down alone in that notoriously un- comfortable bed, the one we make ourselves,” at least we can fall asleep.

It can feel catty to publicly criticize another woman’s romantic choices, and doing so inevitably opens one up to accusations of jealousy or pettiness. But the stories we tell about marriage, love, partnership, and gender matter, especially when they’re told in major culture-shaping magazines. And it’s equally as condescending to say that women’s choices are off-limits for critique, especially when those choices are shared as universal advice, and especially when they neatly dovetail with resurgent conservative efforts to make women’s lives smaller and less independent. “Marry rich” is, as labor economist Kathryn Anne Edwards put it in Bloomberg, essentially the Republican plan for mothers. The model of marriage as a hierarchy with a breadwinning man on top and a younger, dependent, submissive woman meeting his needs and those of their children is not exactly a fresh or groundbreaking ideal. It’s a model that kept women trapped and miserable for centuries.

It’s also one that profoundly stunted women’s intellectual and personal growth. In her essay for the Cut, Christie seems to believe that a life of ease will abet a life freed up for creative endeavors, and happiness. But there’s little evidence that having material abundance and little adversity actually makes people happy, let alone more creatively generativ e . Having one’s basic material needs met does seem to be a prerequisite for happiness. But a meaningful life requires some sense of self, an ability to look outward rather than inward, and the intellectual and experiential layers that come with facing hardship and surmounting it.

A good and happy life is not a life in which all is easy. A good and happy life (and here I am borrowing from centuries of philosophers and scholars) is one characterized by the pursuit of meaning and knowledge, by deep connections with and service to other people (and not just to your husband and children), and by the kind of rich self-knowledge and satisfaction that comes from owning one’s choices, taking responsibility for one’s life, and doing the difficult and endless work of growing into a fully-formed person—and then evolving again. Handing everything about one’s life over to an authority figure, from the big decisions to the minute details, may seem like a path to ease for those who cannot stomach the obligations and opportunities of their own freedom. It’s really an intellectual and emotional dead end.

And what kind of man seeks out a marriage like this, in which his only job is to provide, but very much is owed? What kind of man desires, as the writer cast herself, a raw lump of clay to be molded to simply fill in whatever cracks in his life needed filling? And if the transaction is money and guidance in exchange for youth, beauty, and pliability, what happens when the young, beautiful, and pliable party inevitably ages and perhaps feels her backbone begin to harden? What happens if she has children?

The thing about using youth and beauty as a currency is that those assets depreciate pretty rapidly. There is a nearly endless supply of young and beautiful women, with more added each year. There are smaller numbers of wealthy older men, and the pool winnows down even further if one presumes, as Christie does, that many of these men want to date and marry compliant twentysomethings. If youth and beauty are what you’re exchanging for a man’s resources, you’d better make sure there’s something else there—like the basic ability to provide for yourself, or at the very least a sense of self—to back that exchange up.

It is hard to be an adult woman; it’s hard to be an adult, period. And many women in our era of unfinished feminism no doubt find plenty to envy about a life in which they don’t have to work tirelessly to barely make ends meet, don’t have to manage the needs of both children and man-children, could simply be taken care of for once. This may also explain some of the social media fascination with Trad Wives and stay-at-home girlfriends (some of that fascination is also, I suspect, simply a sexual submission fetish , but that’s another column). Fantasies of leisure reflect a real need for it, and American women would be far better off—happier, freer—if time and resources were not so often so constrained, and doled out so inequitably.

But the way out is not actually found in submission, and certainly not in electing to be carried by a man who could choose to drop you at any time. That’s not a life of ease. It’s a life of perpetual insecurity, knowing your spouse believes your value is decreasing by the day while his—an actual dollar figure—rises. A life in which one simply allows another adult to do all the deciding for them is a stunted life, one of profound smallness—even if the vacations are nice.

ALL THINGS ARE TOO SMALL: Essays in Praise of Excess , by Becca Rothfeld

The essays I love favor abundance over economy, performance over persuasion. Zadie Smith’s exemplary “Speaking in Tongues” juggles Barack Obama, Shakespeare, Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” Pauline Kael on Cary Grant, Thomas Macaulay on the Marquess of Halifax and her own “silly posh” speaking voice. Its modest argument, that “flexibility of voice leads to a flexibility in all things,” disappears into the spectacle of a nimble mind reveling in its omnivorous erudition.

The critic Becca Rothfeld’s first collection, “All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess,” is splendidly immodest in its neo-Romantic agenda — to tear down minimalism and puritanism in its many current varieties — but, like Smith, she makes her strongest case in her essays’ very form, a carnival of high-low allusion and analysis. Macaulay, Cary Grant, Obama and a posh accent? Rothfeld will see you and raise you: How about Simone Weil, Aristotle, “Troll 2,” Lionel Trilling, Hadewijch of Brabant (from whom she takes her title), serial killer procedurals, Proust and the Talmud? Not that she neglects Cary Grant; in an essay on love and equality, she filters a smart reading of “His Girl Friday” through the philosopher Stanley Cavell.

Cynthia Ozick (who ought to know) has favorably — and justly — compared Rothfeld to “the legendary New York intellectuals,” though Rothfeld lives in D.C., where she’s the nonfiction book critic for The Washington Post. She’s also an editor at The Point, a contributing editor at The Boston Review, and has published in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The Nation, The Atlantic, The Baffler and The British Journal of Aesthetics. Of course she also has a Substack, and she declares on her website — which links to many splendid pieces not collected in this book — that she’s “perhaps delusionally convinced” she’ll eventually finish her Harvard Ph.D. dissertation in philosophy.

The costive and the envious might wonder if she’s spreading herself too thin, but Rothfeld’s rigor and eloquence suggest that in her case, as the title of one essay has it, “More Is More.” That piece begins in dispraise of “professional declutterers” such as Marie Kondo, whose aesthetic amounts to “solipsism spatialized,” and from whose dream houses “evidence of habitation — and, in particular, evidence of the body, with its many leaky indecencies — has been eliminated.”

But it soon morphs into dispraise of minimalist prose and the “impoverished non-novels” of fashionable writers including Jenny Offill, Ottessa Moshfegh and Kate Zambreno, whose “anti-narratives are soothingly tractable, made up of sentences so short that they are often left to complete themselves.”

Rothfeld, by contrast, leaves no phrase unturned. Her maximalist prose abounds in alliteration — “I recommend bingeing to bursting,” she writes, exhorting us to “savor the slivers of salvation hidden in all that hideous hunger” — as well as such old-school locutions as “pray tell” and “cannot but be offensive.” If these mannerisms sit uneasily next to her f-worded celebrations of sexuality, the dissonance is deliberate, and the unease is a matter of principle.

In “Wherever You Go, You Could Leave,” a takedown of “mindfulness,” Rothfeld reports that when she “decided to live” after a suicide attempt in her first year of college, she rejected the soothing blankness of meditation and concluded that “perturbation is a small price to pay for the privilege of a point of view.”

Despite her disdain for “professional opinion-havers” — among them the columnist Christine Emba, lately also of The Washington Post — she doesn’t mind laying down the law. In the book’s longest essay, “Only Mercy: Sex After Consent,” Rothfeld taxes Emba, author of the best-selling “Rethinking Sex,” with an “appalling incomprehension of what good sex is like.”

So, pray tell. “We should choke, crawl, spank, spew, and above all, surrender furiously, until the sheer smack of sex becomes its own profuse excuse for being.” Some sexual encounters, she continues, “crack us open like eggs” and “we should not be willing to live without them.”

We-shoulding is an occupational hazard of opinion-having, but we need take these pronouncements no more — and no less — to heart than Rothfeld’s paradoxical admiration for both the “beatifically stylized” films of Éric Rohmer and the “magnificently demented” oeuvre of David Cronenberg. Do we agree or disagree with her that Sally Rooney’s novels are overpraised, and that Norman Rush’s “Mating” is really “one of the most perfect novels of the past half century”?

More to the point, do we agree that “the aesthetic resides in excess and aimlessness,” and that extravagance is “our human due”? I’d say no to the former and yes to the latter, but who cares? What counts in these essays is the exhilarating ride, not the sometimes-dodgy destination. William Blake wrote that the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom; Rothfeld might say that they’re one and the same. No argument there.
