I want to take winter classes

For Admitted Transfer Students: Step 1 - Commit and deposit for Spring semester to reserve your seat. Step 2 - Wait 3-4 weeks to receive your Admitted Student Portal and Transfer Credit Evaluation. Both will start going out in mid-Nov. Step 3 - Once your transfer credit evaluation is complete (you will be notified via email), please utilize Degree Works “What If” function guide to register for winter courses. I have questions about orientation

How do I register for orientation? You need to log-in to your Admitted Student Portal to register for an open orientation date. Admitted Student Portal is sent via email to all deposited students about a week after your commit/deposit in CUNYFirst. Please check your spam/junk folders. Haven't see your portal? Contact [email protected] Is orientation in-person? Yes! The orientation is a one full day in-person experience. Am I required to attend? Yes! All freshmen are required to attend an in-person orientation date. Can my parents come with me? No. Orientation is for students only, guests will not be allowed on campus. Do I need to be vaccinated to attend orientation Yes! You must have received both vaccination doses at least 2 weeks prior to your orientation date. I applied for Fall, why did my admission change to Summer?

Change to Summer is completely normal! Students who wish to kick-off their Hunter studies earlier have the option to do so in the Summer, which is why the change happened. You do not need to start classes in the summer if you were admitted for Fall semester, it is OPTIONAL. You were admitted for the semester you applied for and can start then.

Application Fee Waiver Requests

Since you have to submit a CUNY Application to apply to Hunter, we at Hunter are unable to offer any fee waivers. It’s a CUNY application, so only CUNY has the ability to waive fees. Freshman Applicants CUNY allots each high school in New York State a number of application fee waivers. High schools distribute application fee waivers to students who have applied to CUNY. So please speak with your HS College Office to see if a waiver is possible. You can also reach out to CUNY directly stating your case to see if a waiver is possible. Transfer Applicants In general, CUNY does not issue application fee waivers for transfer applicants. You can certainly reach out to CUNY directly stating your case to see if a waiver is possible.

HONORS: Can I apply to both Freshman Scholar Programs and Macaulay? All freshman applicants can apply to both Macaulay Honors and Freshman Scholar Programs, however, you can only be selected for one (not both). Students would receive a decision on their Macaulay application before hearing back about their scholar program decision. HONORS: I applied to Macaulay/General Admission already, do I need to apply to Freshmen Scholars separately? Yes! Scholar programs require a separate application, info at www.hunter.cuny.edu/scholars . All freshman applicants can apply to both Macaulay Honors and Freshman Scholar Programs, however, you can only be selected for one (not both). HONORS: Status of my Macaulay or Freshmen Scholar Application

General Freshmen or Macaulay Application Status Students who submitted Macaulay or the General Freshmen application can only check if the application is complete. To do, please follow the tutorial provided by CUNY: CUNY Application Status Tutorial . Macaulay or Freshman Scholar Application Status Macaulay or Scholar Programs will not release any application status updates until the decision is made in mid- to late-March. The best thing you can do is ensure that you have all required documents submitted with your CUNY application (See CUNY Application Status Tutorial ). Admissions Interviews

General Freshman and Transfer Admissions Interview Hunter College does not offer interviews for general applicants to the college. The review is conducted based on everything outlined in the How to apply section of our website. Macaulay Honors for First-Year Students Some students may be invited to interview, not all. Being invited or not invited to an interview is not an indicator of being selected for the program. Freshmen Honors Scholar Programs Scholar programs review applicants solely on the admission documents submitted with your application and the scholar program application submission. There is no interview process for scholars. Transfer Scholarship Applicants Scholarship committee reviews applicants solely on the admission documents submitted with your application and the scholarship application submission. There is no interview process.

HONORS: I already received an admissions decision from Hunter, can I still apply for the Freshmen Scholar Programs?

Fall Applicants: Yes! Scholar programs require a separate application. Info at www.hunter.cuny.edu/scholars Spring Applicants: Freshmen scholar programs do not offer a Spring admission application process. You cannot apply for scholar programs in the Spring.

HONORS: The scholar application deadline has passed, can I still apply?

Absolutely! All students who apply after the deadline will be reviewed on space availability basis. Note, you will be notified and get a decision ONLY when space is available, no other notifications/status updates will be sent. Space in in the programs is not guaranteed. HONORS: I applied for Macaulay/Freshman Scholars, but received a general decision, why?

Students who applied for Macaulay/Freshman Scholar programs may receive a general decisions early. A few things to note: > General admission as a freshman has no influence on Macaulay/Freshman Scholar review. > The choice to accept our general freshman offer of admission now or wait until after you hear from Macaulay/Scholars is yours and has NO influence on your review for the program(s). > You will receive a decision from Macaulay/Scholar programs in late-March. > General admission offer is non-binding. Don't forget: Fall 2023 deposit deadline is May 1st

Hunter College offers several residence halls for students. The availability and the accommodation types change annually, so please make sure to check Living at Hunter website for more info. Housing Location(s) All residence halls are located in Manhattan within a 15-20min commute to campus. Housing Cost Cost of housing can range depending on accommodation type, please review the Living at Hunter website to see currently available housing options. Housing Community Each residence hall is staffed with current students (RAs) who offer a variety of student programming. Students will have the opportunity to explore NYC and engage with others in the residence hall in a fun way throughout the whole semester. Housing Safety All residence halls have 24hr security and professional staff that resides on premises to ensure students' safety in the residence halls. DEGREEWORKS: I need help with DegreeWorks

Q: What is DegreeWorks? DegreeWorks is an online advisement tool that displays your progress toward completing your degree. You will need your CUNYFirst log-in credentials to access DegreeWorks Q: Why can't I see my transfer credits in DegreeWorks? You will see an update in DegreeWorks 2-3 business days after your credits are posted in your CUNYFirst. Changes made to CUNYFirst typically take 2-3 days to be uploaded into DegreeWorks. These changes include transfer credit evaluation, newly registered courses, grade changes, and changes to transfer credit equivalencies. Q: I am a new student, my major declaration has not been posted in CUNYFirst, how can I see what to register for? You can use “What If” located on the side bar of your DegreeWorks worksheet. What-If will show the courses you currently have completed as well as courses that are in progress and will apply them to different majors and minors. First you must select the Major or Minor and the current catalog year. Some majors also have concentrations, be sure to pick a concentration and an additional catalog year for the concentration. All documents that are sent via PDF delivery to "CUNY - Hunter College" through services like Parchment, or Naviance, eTrascript, etc., are delivered to CUNY processing center. One processing center for all CUNY applicants. They get thousands of documents daily, so it usually takes about 6-8 weeks for the documents to show up in CUNYFirst. All documents that are sent to Hunter College email usually take about 6-8 weeks to show up in CUNYFirst as well.

What is the SAT/ACT requirement?

Hunter College will be test optional for the Fall 2023 – Spring 2025 semesters. We strongly encourage students submit their SAT/ACT scores to help provide additional context to their application, especially students applying for merit scholarship programs (Freshman Honors, Macaulay etc.). My High School used P/F grades during the pandemic. Will that impact my admission?

How do I submit documents for my application?

Please review the "Send Documents" portion of the www.cuny.edu/apply website to ensure you send the correct documents and to the right place: www.cuny.edu/apply All documents that are sent via PDF delivery to "CUNY - Hunter College" through services like Parchment, or Naviance, eTrascript, etc., are delivered to CUNY processing center. One processing center for all CUNY applicants. They get thousands of documents daily, so it usually takes about 6-8 weeks for the documents to show up in CUNYFirst. All documents that are sent to Hunter College email usually take about 6-8 weeks to show up in CUNYFirst as well.

I need to updated my NAME or Social Security Number how can I do that securely?

Students can securely upload sensitive documents securely using CUNYFirst: Step 1 - Fill out the Change of Name, Address and Social Security Number Form Step 2 - Follow instructions provided by CUNY on how to upload the form and the proof to CUNYFirst. Step 3 - Alert [email protected] that documents have been submitted (include your first name, last name, CUNYFirst ID#, and date of birth in the email).

I need to submit a Proof of Citizenship, Proof of HS graduation, or Proof of Age, how can I do that?

Step 2 - Fill out the NY State Residency Form Step 3 - Follow instructions provided by CUNY on how to upload the form and the proof to CUNYFirst. Step 4 - Alert [email protected] that documents have been submitted (include your first name, last name, CUNYFirst ID#, and date of birth in the email).

Should I be taking the SAT/ACT to prepare for Fall 2023 admission?

On campus housing.

How do I apply for housing? Fall housing application will be available in March. In the meantime, please fill out the Housing Interest Form to receive alerts/updates about the exact application release date. Housing Interest Form >> Do not forget to check the Living@Hunter housing website for the most up to date information. When will I know if I was offered housing? Housing is offered on a rolling basis to those who have filled out the interest form and submitted the application. Offers will begin to be sent out in April. What if I have to commit by May 1st, but still don't have a housing offer? Students who apply for housing before April 1 will receive housing notifications by May 1. All applications for housing received after April 1 will receive offers on rolling basis, which may be after May 1. Plan accordingly.

How do I check my financial aid status?

Go to CUNYFirst, and navigate to your Student Center page. On the left hand side you will see a 'Finances' tab. Under this, is a 'View Financial Aid' option. Click on Hunter, and it should give you all of the details about your financial aid package.

How do I defer my admissions to another semester?

To defer your admission please accept our offer of admission in CUNYFirst, submit a deposit to reserve your seat (if required), and wait for the Admitted Student Portal. You will be able to defer in the Admitted Student Portal.

How do I apply?

Take a look at the "How to apply" section of our website. The page lists required documents, application timelines, and deadlines for you to review. Check out "How to apply" page >> Go Hawks! The deadline has passed, can I still apply? Hunter will continue to accept application on space availability basis after the deadline. Applications submitted after the deadline will be reviewed in date order after the application is "complete", which means all required documents have been received. Do not delay, apply as soon as you can. No way to tell when the class will be full, unfortunately.

Error when registering for classes, what can I do?

There could be different reasons why you are seeing an error message, please review info for possible solutions below: Error: You have no met pre-requisites for the course >>> Transfers: Please review your Transfer Credit Evaluation in CUNYFirst. if the pre-requisite course did did not transfer as an equivalent to the pre-requisite and you believe it should, you need to contact the department for secondary review of the course with your syllabus. >>> Non-Degree Students: Please review "instructions on how to register" in that very same email that notified you of your acceptance and look at Step 6. You do not get a transfer credit evaluation as a non-degree student, thus, any pre-requisites you may have completed would need to be shown to the department to get approval for registration. They would not be on your record at Hunter automatically as a non-degree student Error: You do not have an enrollment date Please review the "How do I find my enrollment date?" question in the dropdown list Error: You have a hold on your record. * Two-step notification process: 1) Beginning in mid-February applicants will be notified of their admission decision as General Freshman by all college choices listed on their application. 2) March 15 – Macaulay applicants will be notified of their admission decision into Macaulay Honors College by the Macaulay college choice listed on their application. **All other applicants to selective programs will be notified of their admission decision at a later date.

Application Fees

All applicants are required to submit a non-refundable application fee to be considered for admission. The Freshman Application fee is $65. The Transfer Application fee is $70.

Fee Waivers

• Current CUNY students : if you’re currently enrolled at CUNY and intend to transfer without a gap in your enrollment, answer the CUNY Enrollment question on the application to waive your application fee.
• Current High School students : See your high school counselor to see if you are eligible for an application waiver.  Click here for a video on adding a waiver code to your application.
• Veterans and spouses of veterans : Answer the US Military Status question on the application and upload proof of service in the supporting documents section of the application to receive a waiver.  Acceptable forms of proof are DD-214, current Military ID Card, Deployment Orders or Pre-separation Orders. Spouses of veterans can provide Form 1173/1173-1 as proof of military affiliation.

Review and Submit

Make sure to review your application before clicking the Submit button. Upon submission, you’ll be able to access a copy of your Application Summary . We recommend you download a copy. We’ll also generate a CUNYfirst ID number shortly after you submit your application.  This 8 digit unique number will help us identify your application quickly and match any documents you send to us.

Supporting Documents

All applicants are encouraged to provide supporting documents as part of their applications – such as essays and letters of recommendation. Be sure to  review the admission requirements  of your intended program to see if any supporting documents are required.

What about SAT/ACT test scores?

In light of the COVID-19 crisis, SAT and ACT test scores are not required nor considered in application review through the Spring 2023 admission cycle. For more information on the suspension of SAT/ACT test scores,  click here .

Current NYC DOE Public School Students

If you’ve entered your OSIS number on the application, we’ll retrieve an electronic copy of your high school record. If you did not enter your OSIS number, please contact our  Help Desk for Students . If you are currently attending a NYC Charter School, please request an official transcript to be sent to CUNY/UAPC.

All other High School Students

Request an official transcript from your high school to be sent to CUNY/UAPC. Your school can email us an official transcript or if your school uses Naviance, you can request your transcript by adding “The City University of New York (CUNY)” to your list of schools to which you’ve applied. If you are currently attending or have graduated from  a United States-administered American, International or Department of Defense school, you can request an official transcript from your high school to be sent to CUNY/UAPC.

If you are currently attending or have graduated from a Missionary or other American private school, your school must meet CUNY standards for school accreditation. If your high school does not meet accreditation standards, you will be required to take the High School Equivalency test. See the High School Equivalency section below.

Students with High School Equivalency Diploma

If you received a High School Equivalency diploma from NY (also known as  TASC ), send a copy of your diploma and scores. If you were eligible for HSE Regents exemptions, be sure to submit your high school transcript along with your HSE Diploma. If you received an equivalency diploma outside of NYS, contact the appropriate State Education Department for your record.  Visit gedtestingservice.com to learn more .

Home Schooled Students

Generally, your home-schooling curriculum should adhere to your school district’s preliminary education requirement for earning a high school diploma. This will allow us to review your entire record as a home-schooled student within the context of the academic requirements as outlined above. Read More

If you are a New York State resident who received home schooling, a transcript outlining all completed coursework with grades earned is required. You must also submit a letter from the superintendent of your school district or comparable chief school administrator certifying that you have completed the equivalent of a New York State four-year high school program through home schooling.

If you are a senior who is currently completing a home-school program, you must submit a letter from the superintendent of your school district certifying that you are currently completing a program that is equivalent to a NYS four-year high school program.  Upon completion, please submit a letter verifying that you have successfully completed the program.

If you cannot obtain the letter from the high school district, you must obtain a High School Equivalency diploma. See the High School Equivalency section below.

If you are an out-of-state resident who received home-schooling, a state-issued diploma is required. If you have not obtained a state-issued diploma, you must obtain your High School Equivalency diploma. ( for more information on how to obtain a High School Equivalency score )

Online and Correspondence Schools

CUNY does not accept diplomas from any non-public correspondence, online or virtual high school.  Students from these schools must successfully complete a high school equivalency examination to be considered for admission to a CUNY college.

CDOS Commencement Credential and IEP Diploma

Applicants with CDOS (Career Development and Occupational Studies) Commencement Credential or an IEP Diploma must earn a High School Equivalency Diploma.

Supporting Materials

All applicants are encouraged to provide supporting documents as part of their application, and specific majors/programs may require supporting documents to be submitted.

If you are applying to Baruch College, Hunter College or Queens College, use the essay topics below.  Baruch College recommends all freshman applicants to submit an essay.  Hunter College and Queens College require an essay.

• Tell us something meaningful about yourself that is not reflected in your application.  You may choose to speak about your interests, aspirations and/or background.
• It is often said that the road to success is paved with setbacks.  Tell us about a time you faced a challenge or obstacle.  What did you learn from it, and how did it contribute to your success?
• Share an essay on any topic.  You may use an essay that you have previously written or one that discusses a topic of your choice.

Transfer applicants

As a transfer applicant, you’ll need to provide us with official transcripts from each school attended. You may request your transcripts to be sent electronically or via mail to CUNY/UAPC. Below is a list of documents that applicants are asked to provide:

• An official High School Transcript or Equivalency Diploma
• An official transcript from each college/university attended
• An official transcript from each proprietary school attended (if applicable)

CUNY Transcripts If you’re currently enrolled at CUNY, your transcripts will be retrieved automatically if you applied using your CUNYfirst account.  If you’ve attended CUNY more than ten years ago, you may need to request a paper record.

Students educated outside of the United States

If you were educated outside of the United States, you may need to submit additional documentation to complete your application to CUNY.

CUNY’s University Application Processing Center can evaluate your transcript free of charge.

UAPC does not evaluate until all required documents have been submitted. Please follow these guidelines:

• Please observe the list of Required Secondary School Credentials for your country.
• Observe the Translation Guidelines , to ensure a timely evaluation.
• Please submit the form to the relevant office at your previous institutions for official transcripts.
• An official transcript is a copy of your academic record sent directly from your University to CUNY at [email protected] .
• To ensure appropriate documentation is submitted, observe the requirements of an Official Transcript .

If you opt to have your records evaluated by UAPC, you’ll need to provide the following documents along with word for word translations for all documents not issued in English.

Translations

• Copies of complete secondary school record
• Secondary school graduation diploma
• Any external examination certificates earned
• An official transcript of university work, sent directly from the issuing institution

Official translations may be obtained from the following

• Consulate or embassy of the country that is issuing the document
• Translation agency
• Immigrant or refugee association in the U.S. representing the country issuing the document
• The institution where the student studied
• Faculty member of U.S. high school, college, or university (must signify his/her academic department and rank)

All translations must meet the following conditions

• Complete and literal (word-for-word) with no attempts to interpret or evaluate the credential
• Prepared in same format as the original document
• Typed on business or school letterhead stationery
• Signed by a translator attesting to familiarity with the foreign language

CUNY does not accept translations from the following

• The student or members of his/her family
• Individuals not affiliated with any of the organizations listed above

TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/DUOLINGO

If you are on a temporary visa and educated in a non-English speaking environment, you’ll need to submit official test scores for one of the following:

• IELTS (Academic Level)
• PTE (Academic level)

In order for your scores to be considered official, request them to be sent by the issuing agency  to CUNY and/or list our university code 2950 when registering for the exams.  Copies of scores uploaded to the application are considered unofficial.

What is an official transcript?

We define an official record as one that details your complete academic history (all years) while in attendance at a college, university or any postsecondary institution. These records must be sent directly to us from the issuing institution and/or examining body in a sealed, school-issued envelope and must include the following:

• Dates of enrollment, courses taken and marks, grades or ratings in each subject.
• Institutional grading scale or other standard(s) of evaluation.
• Recent signature and date by a school official and must include an original institutional seal. Accepted  signatures include: the Registrar, Dean, Principal, Controller of Examinations, Ministry of Education, or another appropriate school official/office (varies by country).

We do not accept the following:

• Documents certified by a notary public, translator or commissioner of oaths.
• Photocopies or other duplications of a record such as notarized copies, faxed or scanned documents.

Documents by a university must be official in order to be considered. Any document considered “official” is in a stamped and sealed envelope from the post-secondary institution. Any other forms of the documents will not be accepted.

Determine which program(s) you would like to learn more about by searching the graduate programs offered at our 15 CUNY colleges.

Attend an information session or open house to learn more about our program(s).

Research the admission requirements and deadlines for the programs that you would like to pursue (these vary depending on the college and program). If standardized tests are required, plan ahead (ex: GRE/GMAT/LSAT).

Request official transcripts from all of the colleges attended by contacting your college’s registrar’s office.

Contact your academic and/or professional references, to write your 2-3 letters of recommendation. It is helpful to provide references with your personal statement.

If you have international documents , check with the college to see if an external evaluation and/or translation is needed. This process can take several months.

• Start thinking about your goals and how you can achieve them.

Sophomore year

• Look for opportunities to do research either with a professor or develop your own individual research project.

Summer between sophomore and junior years

• Start researching graduate programs.
• Participate in a summer research internship.
• Explore fellowships, grants and other funding providers.

Junior year

• Participate in a research project.
• Start studying for the GRE and take it.
• Visit campuses and recruiting events like graduate fairs and information sessions.

Summer between junior and senior years

• Remain focused and participate in a summer program or internship.
• Start comparing programs and graduate schools and matching them to your interests.
• Research costs and look for scholarships, grants and learn about the financial aid process.
• Take the GRE.
• Begin drafting your statement of purpose and other application essays.

Senior year

• Finish submitting fellowship and all funding applications.
• Request letters of recommendation by early October.
• Ask professors and anyone with a critical eye to review your statement of purpose.
• Submit your admission and funding applications early.
• If needed, take the GRE another time especially if you intend on enrolling in school next fall.

Deadlines vary from program to program. So, to ensure that your application is submitted on time, review the deadline page for each department. You can view deadlines on our Program Search page . Make a calendar with any upcoming deadlines. Remember to include standardized testing which can take six months, as well as letters of recommendation, transcripts, and financial aid, which you can apply to even before being accepted to the school.

Financial Aid

The Office of Financial Aid at CUNY works hard to ensure that higher education is affordable and accessible to all our students. Even before you apply, we recommend that you file your FAFSA. Funding is usually on a first come, first serve basis. Your FAFSA is the document that allows your college to determine your eligibility for scholarships, grants, loans and work study. Standardized Tests

Your program may require you to take a standardized test. Make sure you check the requirements. You may have to take one of the following exams. You should take your exams no later than the five or six months before you apply giving you the appropriate amount of time to receive your results and then retake the test if necessary.

When taking your exams, make sure you indicate the schools that you would like the scores to be sent to.

• GRE – The Graduate Record Examinations (usually required for admission into programs in the social sciences, humanities etc.)
• GMAT – The Graduate Management Admission Test (required for admission into business school)
• NYS Teachers Certification – New York State requires candidates in Education programs to take certain tests for admissions.
• LSAT – Law School Admissions Test (required for admission into Law School)

Prepare for exams

The length of time to prepare for the exam will vary depending on the person. When you learn which test your program may require, follow these steps to help you prepare:

• Take a diagnostic test to measure your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you focus on the areas that you need improvement upon and give you an idea of how long you will need to study.
• There are many external resources available to help you prepare for your examination, including apps for your phone, books, and websites. You can also enroll in a preparation course which will vary in price and duration. Choose the one that is best for you
•   Baruch College and Lehman College offer GMAT and GRE Test Preparation Courses.

Personal Statement

Your personal statement can vary depending on which program you are applying to. The application may call for you to answer specific questions or you may be given little direction. This is all to help the program get a sense of who you are as an applicant, your unique abilities, your accomplishments, your past experiences, your personal and career goals and also how you think this particular program will allow you to reach these goals. You want to start writing three months prior to submitting your application . This will allow ample time to ask for critiques and for you to edit your work.

Letters of Recommendation

You will need two or more recommenders for your application. Make sure you know who your program expects a recommendation from (your professors, a supervisor, etc). You want to reach out to possible recommenders at least a month before you submit your application to give them adequate time to write your recommendation letter. You should pick someone who you have a professional relationship with and who can genuinely speak to your capabilities to succeed in the program.

Although the G.P.A requirements vary, in general, the minimum G.P.A. to enroll in a graduate program is a 3.0. Some programs may also require you to have taken a certain amount of credits or particular classes in a related field prior to beginning your degree. Make sure you go over the requirements and your qualifications and contact the program advisor if you have any questions. If needed, you may be able to take non-degree courses to fulfill prerequisite coursework. These courses will not count towards your graduate degree but will help you gain entry into a program.

International Students should pay particular attention to the international students’ page and the school admissions website to make sure that they are adhering to all the instructions and requirements for submitting a transcript from another country .

Your resume is used to give the graduate committee more information of why you would be a good candidate for the program. It should paint a picture of your academic career and any work experience that would enhance your experience in an advanced degree. It should not be too long (one to two pages) but list any extracurricular activities, research assistant work, honors and awards, work experience, volunteer opportunities, and any other relevant experience.

Supplemental Materials

Some colleges or programs will request that you submit additional essays, writing samples, portfolios, screenplays or short films as part of your application. Please pay attention to the specific program requirements because they are individualized to each program. Check with the program you are applying to for requirement details.

Additional Statement or Addendum

This is an additional opportunity to explain discrepancies or unique situations that may hurt your graduate school application. It is a brief statement that may address a low Standardized test score or grade and explain how/why this is not an accurate reflection of your abilities. Students must be very careful in adding this section as it is meant to address any questions or hesitations by the admissions professional when reviewing your application.

If you were educated outside of the United States and English is not your first language, you will have to take one of the following exams. Check with your desired campus to confirm which exam is accepted.

Admissions: General Information

Requirements for admission.

An applicant for admission to Hunter College as a matriculated student in any of the master’ s programs must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered: (For admission to the School of Social Work, see  Silberman School of Social Work   section of this catalog.)

The student must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, comparable in standard and content to a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College. Degrees granted on the basis of work completed at institutions which are not fully accredited, or on the basis of nonacademic prior learning, test scores, and other than organized supervised course work in academic subjects may not be considered comparable.

The student must demonstrate ability to pursue graduate work successfully. In general, the minimum requirements for consideration are an undergraduate average of B in the area in which the student wishes to specialize and an average of B minus in the undergraduate record as a whole. Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended other than Hunter College.

For admission in the School of Arts and Sciences, the student is usually required to present at least 18 credits of previous work in the area of specialization acceptable to the school or department concerned and two letters of reference. For admission to the School of Education, the student is usually required to present at least 36 credits of previous liberal arts and science courses and a liberal arts or science major of at least 30 credits. See specific program descriptions for detailed requirements.

Competency Examinations

Aptitude test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required of most applicants to the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education and the School of Health Professions. See specific program descriptions regarding this requirement. It is not required for the School of Nursing.

The GRE should be taken no later than February for fall admission and September for spring admission. The Hunter College institution code is 2301.

English Language proficiency  is required of all applicants whose native language is not English and/or who have taken all or part of their post-secondary education in a country where English is not the native language. Such applicants, regardless of country of citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status, must take this examination. Hunter College accepts the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Testing System (IELTS) or Pearson PTE exams as proof of English Language proficiency depending on the particular program. Depending on the program selected, an applicant may also be required to take the TWE (Test of Written English) and the TSE (Test of Spoken English), also administered by the Educational Testing Service.Applicants should plan to take these examination(s) at least nine months before their intended date of enrollment. Registration

If you have registered for courses and change your mind about attending,  please be sure to drop all classes  and don’t simply assume the School will run a cancellation process absolving you of any charges. You must withdraw from your classes prior to the first day of the semester to avoid tuition and fee-drop charges. Any student who does not officially withdraw from classes prior to the start of the term will be charged tuition and fees based upon the University’s academic calendar.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to eligible undergraduate and graduate students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching. The amount of the award is based on the number of credits registered for in each semester.

Please note, due to the federal sequester, for any 2024-25 TEACH Grant first disbursed on or after October 1, 2024, and before October 1, 2025, the maximum award of $4,000 is reduced by 5.7% ($228), resulting in a maximum award of $3,772.

TEACH Grant eligibility requirements

• Students must be matriculated into a high need subject area program. Please see current list below.
• Students must be registered for courses.
• Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or greater. (For first semester students, you may also qualify with a score within the 75th percentile on any part of a standardized exam ex. GRE, teaching certification test). Exam must have been taken within the last 5 years.
• In addition to the above, undergraduate students must have completed 90 credits prior to application.

As a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve in which you agree to (among other requirements) to

• teach in a high-need field
• at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families
• for at least four complete academic years within eight years after completing (or ceasing enrollment in) the course of study for which you received the grant.
• and apply for certification within 120 days of graduating

If you do not complete your service obligation, all TEACH Grant funds you received will be converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education, with interest charged from the date the TEACH Grant was disbursed (paid to you or on your behalf).
