Greeks were the first people on Earth to claim the effects of the tsunami. They claim that tsunami is just like land earthquakes. Also, the only difference between tsunami and earthquake is that tsunami is caused in oceans. Thus, the scale and ferocity of the tsunami are almost impossible to control.

The History of Tsunami

The highest ever recorded tsunami was on 9th July 1958 in the record books. It took place in a bay which was located in the ligula bay along the coasts of Alaska. After the quake, a massive mass of rock fell into the bay waters from the cliff nearby. Thus, this created an impact and produced a wave that reached a height of 524 meters. Also, this is regarded as one of the highest recorded tsunami waves ever. 

The destructive waves responsible for the occurrence of tsunami is also produced in waters of bays or lakes. As this water approached the coast, it grows larger. Awareness | It is vitally important to inform people about the effects of tsunamis and their potential consequences. Afforestation | Another alternative is to plant trees that can absorb the force of tidal waves, like mangroves, along the coast and its borders. These may lessen a tsunami's effects and limit the devastation they create.

My Experience Of Mock Drills

I remember mock drills were conducted in my school and high school as they were located near the coast of the Arabian sea. These mock drills were conducted to prepare the students for any emergency circumstances like tsunamis, earthquakes and fire disasters. We were taught how to escape in a planned manner which does not create a problematic situation. We were strictly instructed not to use lifts in such a scenario. During heavy rains, school was kept off since Tsunami is more likely to strike during rains.

Tsunamis are less common than other types of natural disasters. However, they may still cause significant damage. A tsunami's most severe consequence is the massive number of deaths. As a result, individuals have little time to flee or escape a tsunami's immediate, nearly silent impact. Tsunamis significantly harm the environment in addition to bringing severe degradation. Marine life suffers extreme damage.

सुनामी को सबसे खतरनाक प्राकृतिक आपदा के रूप में गिना जाता है। यह आपदा जहां भी आती है वहां सर्वनाश करती हुई चली जाती है।

सुनामी यह समुद्र से जन्म लेने वाली एक भयंकर प्राकृतिक आपदा है। सुनामी आने पर एक साथ कई देशों में भय का माहौल होता है क्योंकि इस प्राकृतिक आपदा से बचने का कोई उपाय आधुनिक विज्ञान के पास नहीं है।

समुद्र से शुरू होकर सुनामी अपने अंदर पहाड़, नदी नाले, मलबे सभी को समाहित करती हुई आगे बढ़ती है इसलिए इसे बेहद ही खतरनाक माना जाता है।

ऐसा माना जाता है कि सुनामी को सबसे पहले परिभाषित ग्रीक लोगों ने किया। सुनामी आने पर समुद्र की लहरें सैकड़ों किलोमीटर तक ऊंची हो सकती हैं। आज तक की सबसे भयंकर सुनामी अलास्का की खाड़ी में आई थी इसकी लहरों की ऊंचाई 524 मीटर तक दर्ज की गई थी।

जो देश समुद्र के करीब होते हैं वहां पर सुनामी आने का खतरा बेहद अधिक रहता है। सन 2004 में भारत में सुनामी आई थी इसकी शुरुआत इंडोनेशिया से हुई थी। इस सुनामी ने इंडोनेशिया से चलकर भारत, थाईलैंड, मालदीव, बांग्लादेश में भयंकर तबाही मचाई थी ।

आधुनिक विज्ञान ऐसी तकनीक विकसित कर चुका है जिससे सुनामी की जानकारी कुछ समय पहले मिल जाती है। लेकिन अगर इन प्राकृतिक आपदाओं से स्थायी निजात पाना हो तो प्रकृति संरक्षण ही एकमात्र उपाय है।

जब समुद्र तल में भूकंप आते हैं तो उसके कंपन्न से बड़ी-बड़ी लहरें उठने लगती हैं। उन लहरों में वायुदाब अधिक होने पर वह गतिमान तथा विनाशकारी रूप धारण कर लेते हैं जिन्हें सुनामी कहा जाता है। 

कभी-कभी ज्वालामुखी में विस्फोट होने पर भयंकर कंपन्न उत्पन्न होता है जिसके कारण भी सुनामी आने का खतरा रहता है। भूस्खलन तथा चक्रवात के कारण भी सुनामी का जन्म हो सकता है।

समुद्र के अंदर बन रहे ज्वारीय तरंगों के कारण सुनामी उत्पन्न होती हैं। ज्वारीय तरंगे प्राकृतिक असंतुलन के कारण उत्पन्न होती हैं।

सुनामी के लिए सबसे अधिक जवाबदार लहरें हैं। लहरें जितनी ऊंची उठती हैं उनका खतरा उतना ही बढ़ जाता है। सुनामी को रोकना लगभग नामुमकिन ही होता है।

आज शहरीकरण और विकास के नाम पर सैकड़ों वृक्षों को हर घंटे काटा जा रहा है। लेकिन इंसान इसके परिणाम से जानबूझकर अनभिज्ञ बनने की कोशिश कर रहा है।

मानव जीवन को सुरक्षित रखने के लिए प्रकृति का संतुलन बेहद जरूरी है और वृक्षों का प्राकृतिक संतुलन में बहुत बड़ा योगदान होता है। वृक्षों से ऋतु चक्र संतुलित रहते हैं। वृक्षों के माध्यम से जमीन का कटाव रुकता है तथा जीने के लिए सबसे जरूरी ऑक्सीजन गैस का निर्माण होता है।इस कारण हमे जादा से जादा वृक्षारोपण करना चाहिए।

वनों के आच्छादन के कारण आज ग्लोबल वार्मिंग की समस्या बढ़ चुकी है। धरती का सामान्य तापमान बेहद बढ़ चुका है जिसके कारण ग्लेशियर बड़ी तेजी से पिघल रहे हैं।

ग्लेशियरों के पिघलने से समुद्र का स्तर ऊंचा उठ रहा है। समुद्र का स्तर जितना ऊंचा उठता है उसमें कंपन्न बनने और सुनामी आने का खतरा उतना ही ज्यादा रहता है।

विकास के नाम पर इंसान प्रकृति के साथ छेड़छाड़ कर रहा है। बड़ी-बड़ी नदियों के जल रोक कर समुद्र चक को बाधित कर रहा है। सिर्फ यही नहीं समुद्रों में कृत्रिम टापू बनाकर प्रकृति को सीधे चुनौती दे रहा है।

मनुष्य ने अपने मस्तिष्क के दम पर बहुत विकास किया है और उसे नियमित विकास करते रहने का भी पूरा हक है। लेकिन उसे प्रकृति को समझना होगा और अपने वजूद को प्रकृति के साथ जोड़ना होगा तब जाकर इन आपदाओं से मुक्ति मुमकिन हो सकेगी।

9 जुलाई सन 1958 के दिन इतिहास की सबसे बड़ी सुनामी दर्ज की गई थी। अलास्का की खाड़ी में आया हुआ भूकंप का झटका एक विनाशकारी सुनामी का रूप धारण कर लिया और देखते ही देखते लाखों लोग मृत्यु के मुख में समा गए।

अलास्का की खाड़ी में बेहद ऊंचे तथा चौड़े पर्वत मौजूद हैं। इस सुनामी की विनाशकता का अंदाजा इस बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि सुनामी में ऊंचे ऊंचे पर्वत भी बह गए थे।

सुनामी आने पर मनुष्य लाचार हो जाता है और अपने विकास के अभिमान तथा मानकों को चूर चूर होते देखता है। सुनामी आने पर विस्थापन के अलावा और कोई उपाय कारगर साबित नहीं होता।

जब सुनामी आता है उस समय मनुष्य का एक बड़ा वर्ग प्राण गवा देता है तथा उससे भी अधिक लोग अपने आवास को छोड़ सुरक्षित स्थान पर चले जाते हैं।

The fact is that experts from the Japanese National Research Institute of Geophysics and Natural Disaster Prevention have developed a high-tech system that predicts these natural disasters. This unique project, as Lin et al. (2014) note, enables residents of the coastal areas to escape from a tsunami within twenty minutes after the alarm. This time will be enough to completely evacuate the area that is endangered and to save all the residents. There have not been severe disasters in Japan that could be similar to that in 2011, but if one happens, people are likely to be ready.

This system has already been launched and includes dozens of different detectors installed at one hundred and fifty points on the seabed along the Pacific coast of Japan from Hokkaido to Tokyo. Information from the sensors comes through the cable directly to the Japanese meteorological office. The development and construction of the system cost the Japanese budget several hundred million dollars. On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan at 2:46 pm. It continued for 3 minutes and is the greatest earthquake recorded in Japan. As a result, a massive tsunami around the height of 38m equivalent to a 12 story building flooded more than 517km² of Japan’s coast. The epicentre was located 130km off of Sendai Honshu, 32km below the sea. An estimated 28,000 people died with 90% of them drowning. According to national geographic, the water cascaded in a 5.5m sea wall which is also the deepest sea wall in the world. In the Naka River, the current of the water moved upstream. Consequently, all the water washed cars houses trees and countless other rubble away. The coastline of Sendai Honshu subsided about 1.5m. the land also shifted a few metres from its original place. In Fukushima, the waves corrupted the power supply of the nuclear generators.

Tsunamis are created by underwater earthquakes on the ocean floor. The earthquake creates a disturbance in the ocean and creates a wave. Waves start to build up as the reach the land and can travel up to the speed of a jet plane. The waters from the shore slow retract from the shores as the wave hits the coastline. The waves can create great damage.

When the tsunami hit, it immediately destroyed buildings and washed away cars. The flooding contaminated the food supply and other human necessities. Majority of the population had no clean water or electricity. Many people had lost their lives. About 28,000 people died or were missing and 90% of deaths were from drowning. The area of Fukushima had a nuclear emergency and residents had to evacuate. To this day, about 52,000 evacuees are still living in temporary housing although the majority have bought or build new houses.

After the tsunami occurred, the Japanese governments established a contingency plan to help the population rebuild. One of the most important parts of the plan is designated evacuation sites for people. These sites are used to shelter people who have fled their homes because of a natural disaster. The government also created systems for different people with different needs. The system has different levels of housing damage which will sort residents into a more suitable home. For example, if a resident’s house has been completely damaged then they get to use the support fund which will replace, repair or lease a house for them. Government-funded temporary housing also gets bigger and residents can stay for even longer.

People from around the world started donating money and aid after hearing about the devastating tsunami. Many people gave donations and created fundraising to donate to organisations. The AAR Japan set up temporary housing and donated food and necessities within one day of the tsunami. On March 15th, 2011, the Direct Relief donated $15 million and an additional $600,000. On April 25th, 2011, JACL and Direct Relief gave an additional $1 million to those who still needed help.

The responses had a major impact on Japan and its people. The government and their contingency plan helped the residents and also will prevent another tragedy because of a tsunami. Without the temporary housing, many of the residents would be left without homes or shelter to live it. Many of the residents would not be able to get new houses, build or repair if they did not get help from temporary housing and the government. Without donations, the economy would not be able to restart again. Residents would not be able to get food, water or necessities if they weren’t donated.

After the earthquake occurred, the tsunami warnings were not properly managed or sent out. Although the earthquake warning worked perfectly fine, there was a large power outage after the earthquake hit. This because the cables weren’t strong enough. The tsunami warnings did not reach to the residents living in the coastal areas or people who have left their homes already. Despite the 30 – 60 minutes time the residents had to evacuate after the earthquake, the radios and TVs did not display the warning in time. In the future, Japan needs to upgrade its warning and alert system. They need more durable electrical systems that can be able to withstand earthquakes. Stronger radios and emergency connections need to be built so everyone is aware of the tsunami warning. Schools and public places need to be informed of the evacuation plan beforehand. Doings theses things will stop another preventable tragedy from happening.
