My Favourite Hobby

If I were to pick one favourite hobby of mine out of the many I have, I will definitely pick gardening. I developed a taste for dancing when I was very young. The way my feet moved to the rhythm of the music convinced my parents that I was a born dancer. Dancing is very uplifting as well as economical.

I have always had a love for music and dance. However, I never realized the utter joy they bring to humans. Dancing gives us a lot of exercises. It teaches us to move our body rhythmically and feel the beat of every song. This kind of physical exercise is extremely delightful and enjoyable.

5. My Hobby Essay – Playing Guitar (300 words)

Whenever people ask me regarding my hobby, I always pause and think for a moment. Even though I like playing all the instruments, my hobby is playing guitar.

When I was 6 years old I suddenly developed a liking for music. I started creating tunes and melodies by beating my desks which sounded like I was playing bongos. I was pretty good at it too. Whenever guests used to come at our place they would request me to play some melody on my dining table as they thought I was very good at it. Of course, in childhood I would get annoyed because playing music was something I wanted to keep to myself.

As I grew up, my hobby developed into playing guitars after my aunt came from Florida and got me a guitar. Now all my time was devoted to learning guitar strings and playing screeching music that would make your ears bleed. But soon, after a lot of practice and perseverance I was able to get hands on learning of guitar strings. Playing guitar has taught me many things, but the most important thing it has taught me is that the more you play it, the better you become at it. I have hurt my finger with guitar chords many times. Practicing made me learn different notes and now I can play chords such as AM, C, D, G, AM7, CMAJ7 and many more.

Playing guitar gives me the refuge from thinking too much about outside world. It helps me stay calm in the world of chaos. The best thing about it is that I can recreate any tune I want to, which makes me feel very creative and happy that my hobby has developed into a worthwhile talent. i hope that soon I am able to learn other musical instruments as well.

6. My Hobby Essay – Cooking (300 words)

My hobbies have always changed over the time. At one point in my life, I used to paint in my free time. As I grew up, I started cooking as a hobby. I still remember the recipes that I used to download from the internet and work on them with patience. However, I always ended up with burnt pies or undercooked pizza doughs. It was hilarious for my family to see me trying and failing miserably. However, one day I decided to follow my mother’s cooking recipe. I was able to create the dish perfectly then. The happiness I got was priceless so I decided that from that day onwards, I will cook whenever I have free time in my schedule.

From there on, I cook different recipes every day. From lasagna to baked broccoli— I have successfully tried all the recipes. I have realized over the time that cooking is a stress buster and an energy booster. It feels so good after a long hard day at kitchen to finally serve food to your family or guests. Of course, I don’t do it professionally, it is merely a hobby for me. But the joy I receive when I create food from new recipes or invent my own kind of cuisine by mixing up 2 or 3 recipes is beyond price.

One of the best things I like about cooking is that I can experiment on food. I don’t enjoy cooking as a daily chore, but it’s something that I do as a hobby. I love the sound of patties in hot oil, sizzling as they are being fried. I enjoy cutting the colorfully exotic vegetables. The smell of spices and different flavor oozing from my kitchen excite me and make me feel like I am doing something worthwhile. I love cooking as a hobby and it makes me happy that I have learnt it so early in my age.

7. My Hobby Essay – Writing (300 words)

People think a hobby is something you do that you are really good at, but for me it’s different. My hobby is writing and I have been doing it since the age of 5. After coming home from school I would sit at some corner of the house and write about my day. Of course, I did not realize it at that time that I love and enjoy writing. I merely thought that I was penning down my thoughts.

Now just to be clear, I was not good at it. I couldn’t find the words to explain my day. There were a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes and the list goes on. However since I enjoyed doing it in my free time, I kept writing a diary till the age of 12. On my 13 th birthday, I decided to create a blog for my writing musings. I quickly gained a lot of audience as even though I didn’t write well, I included funny tidbits of my daily life in my blogs.

I never earned from my blogs, but I used to take out 30 minutes out of my busy school schedule to make sure that I write and post the blog. Soon I realized that there are some things that you cannot post online, so I diverted back to writing a diary every day. However, after doing this as a hobby for a very long time I have now become a very good writer. I can create my own poems and literature pieces. Moreover I can now write long opinionated articles very well. In my English class, after reading one of my essays my teacher asked me how did I learn to write so well? I smiled and told her ‘Maybe having hobbies actually help us improve our skills after all’

Over my lifetime, I have read over 2000 books. I don’t focus on a particular genre; I just care about the words written inside that book. One of the best things about reading as a hobby is the smell of new books. I feel like I am addicted to the smell of pages and the sound of a crisp page turning as I get access to the new chapter of the book.

There are many reasons why I enjoy reading books so much. One of the top reasons is that I love travelling, and since I don’t afford travelling so often, I can travel from the Mediterranean islands to the beaches of Florida, from the 16 th Century to the 18 th Century, all through my books. I can live the lives of lords and ladies, and even see the world through the eyes of prince and princesses. A book seems like the most private thing and I feel like a whole new being after reading a book.

Another reason why I love reading so much is that my mind feels fresh after I read the books. I get a lot of information that others are unaware of, which makes me ready to face any challenges of life.

My father realized my passion in an early age and got me a membership to my city’s library. I now visit the library every week, sometimes even twice a week to borrow my favorite books and read, read and read! I know that hobbies are only considered a way of passing time, but I can safely say that my hobby has actually become my passion.

10. My Hobby Essay – Painting and Drawing (500 words)

Soon, I started enjoying painting so much that I bought oil paints and started painting cartoon characters on the wall of our backyard.

When my father found out, he acted like he is very furious about it. But later in the day he went out and brought more colors and canvases for me so I can create better paintings and polish this hobby as much as I want to. Then I used to draw on canvases and paint them and hang them around in our house. All the guests used to praise my art and drawings a lot and this gave me a confidence boost to know that I am good at something.

I don’t call myself artist, as painting and drawing don’t come naturally to me. It is rather something that I have perfected over the years as I liked doing it. If I have to study painting and drawing I would have never enjoyed it as I don’t like to put boundaries on my art. I like the fact that I am not doing this for a living and that I am not studying it in college. This means that I don’t have to be perfect at it, but enjoy it as I create paintings that are messy and creative. I believe hobbies should never be tied into a profession or education, but they are something that a person should keep for their own happiness.

I have painted over 100 portraits till now. Painting and drawing is something that makes me feel calm and creative. Now that I have developed this talent of writing, I like painting for myself so it makes me happy. Painting and Drawing are a hobby that have become inseparable from me now. It has become not only my favorite pastime but also one of widely appreciated talents.

Through my hobby dancing, I was able to lose weight and my chubbiness was gone. The regular dancing that I have been doing has kept me fit. Sometimes I make money from dancing especially during the holidays. Dancing at events or festivals earns me money. At school, I have won awards because I participate in dance as an extracurricular activity. It is a great feeling to have dancing as my hobby because it is what I love and enjoy.

Who are we without our hobbies? Apart from our physical appearances, the collection of the things we do is what makes us distinct from the next person. While there are things we do simply because we have to, we do others because we love to.

Then I was puzzled about the thread movement and how it miraculously turned torn pieces into masterpieces.

Subsequently, my curiosity became a source of entertainment. I would play around the machine and time would disappear while I do so. I would cut my old clothing and run it through the machine just to see it move. Slowly and surely, I became enchanted with sewing so much that it dominated my thought and became my hobby.

Now, I would not leave a single week without creating something adorable with the sewing machine. A few moments spent away from this intriguing environment feels like an eternity. What’s more, I have found that sewing has a therapeutic effect on me. It helps clear my thought and keeps me focused on a single task. Though there is financial gain in this endeavor I do it simply for the thrill.

Me and my hobby:

Sewing is my hobby and it is refreshing to me but over time I realized that by virtue of my love for this craft I became interested in related fields. First, I have to create a sketch of what to sew. This process is a purely creative one. As I draw, I can picture what I would do to the real fabric when I eventually get on the machine. I also visualize what the eventual dress would look like on me or whoever would eventually wear it.

Then, I cut pieces of the fabric as outlined in my drawings. The cutting stage is mainly about precision. The materials have to be systematically shaped in such a way that it fits the measurement taken. Any deviation from this would lead to undesired results.

Finally, the pieces are carefully held together by the automated needle of the machine. This is the most fulfilling part of the process. This is so because seeing the conceptualized idea come to bare serves as an icing on the cake. However, the feeling of excitement I experience after the cloth is made quickly evaporates. I am immediately left with the desire to start over again. Though the process might seem mechanical or even uninspiring to an onlooker, I wouldn’t trade my hobby of sewing for anything else in the world.

Any activity which one does for pleasure is called as a hobby. It can anything ranging from reading books, spending time with your pets, travelling around, talking to new people, just anything which gives immense pleasure to a person and relieves a person of the tensions of daily life. I too have a hobby which is quite common in the world as so many people do it.

As a child growing up, I loved and enjoyed cooking and I would spend hours watching cooking programmes and watching my parents cook. Sooner rather than later, I also started trying out different recipes and dishes I had seen on TV and sometimes even tweaked a few things and made delicacies of my own. Cooking gave my childhood so much joy and bliss which made it one of my hobbies, I could cook all day and I get just happy at the thought of trying out a new recipe. Another hobby of mine is soccer which is kind of an accidental hobby (if there is anything like that). I had always loved watching football (or soccer) and was pretty good at analysis and understanding of the game but I never really tried playing the sport because of my first hobby that is cooking which meant I was more of the indoor person. Fate would have it that one of my close friends was on the varsity soccer team and all the goalkeepers got injured so he told me about an open audition for the position of goalkeeper and I just decided to try out. I was wonderful at the try outs and got a spot on the varsity soccer team, I became a pretty brilliant goalkeeper and I look forward to every opportunity to get on the field of play. There is this feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction I get anytime I am on the field of play. It is very possible to have more than one hobby so open yourself to the possibilities of all the different activities and interesting things around us.

My Favourite Hobby:

My favourite hobby is gardening. I spend most of my leisure time when I am not cooking or playing soccer in gardening. Gardening has been a huge source of knowledge, education, delight and entertainment to me. I have had the opportunity to learn a lot of new things on flowers, plants, vegetables, butterflies and even birds from gardening. My parents have a little plot of land where I pursue and practice this hobby. I have different varieties of vegetables, flowers and a few fruit trees in my garden. Some of the vegetables I grow are carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, radish, chillies, bitter gourd, etc. I also grow flowers like jasmine, roses, lilies, merry gold, carnation, poppies, flux and forget-me-not. These flowers make the garden a delight to behold and give the garden a soothing fragrance.

There are a few fruit-trees in the garden including banana, mango, guava and pomegranate. The garden is visited often by quite a number of birds and there are even some birds are live permanently on the fruit trees. The chirping sound made by the birds and their sweet music gives the garden the perfect condition and makes it the ideal place to be.

Gardening has also helped my other hobby (soccer) by keeping me mentally alert, physically fit and very fresh. The ambience of the garden is highly invigorating, fresh and soothing; there is calmness to the atmosphere of the garden. The processes and activities involved in gardening include weeding, digging, grafting, cutting, maturing, watering and the tilling of the soil. All of these activities get me the needed physical exercise I need to make my body fit and keep me sharp mentally.

A lot of family members and friends appreciate my hobby gardening. Over the years, I have been able to develop skills needed in gardening, sometimes; my father also helps me maintain the garden. I have a worthy and wonderful collection of magazines and books on vegetables, flowers, fruit trees and also gardening overall. It is quite a wonderful experience to watch plants grow, develop and blossom.

I am not full of knowledge in gardening; sometimes, I get advice and help from a professional gardener so as to know the right thing to do. I spend a large chunk of my money purchasing manure, seeds, fertilisers, books on gardening and gardening tools and implements. I try to catch all the programmes on television about gardening, I visit plant and flower shows and also fruit and vegetable exhibition. I try my possible best to balance all my hobbies, studies and other engagements without hurting any one of them for the others.

Gardening motivates me and gives me a sense of purpose about what I can achieve with my life. Once I am gardening, I forget about all of my worries, troubles and problems of the world. I am my happiest when I am working in the garden or when I get to give my friends and my family members fruits from the garden.

It has also helped me in gaining self confidence. I even maintain diaries. I write every day at night in my diary. In my diary I write about myself, my friends & family, how my day passed and what productive I did in my whole day. Sometimes I re-write fictional stories from my school books.

It is a great hobby as it improves our spelling errors. I don’t write to pass my time, I write to pour my heart out in pages. It makes me feel relaxed and stress-free. Everyone and everything inspires me to write more. Writing makes us smarter and increases our IQ efficiently.

I never get bored of this hobby, it keeps me busy and productive throughout the day. In this way, I spend my time studying and writing. It is my dream to become a writer like William Shakespeare and Anne Frank. Hopefully I will become one if this habit stays with me forever.

It has changed my physical appearance and I feel more fit after so many years of playing this sport. Now I teach my brother how to play cricket with efficiency. People also make careers in the field of cricket as the cricketers earn huge amounts of money by just playing.

That’s the reason why cricket is my favourite hobby and it is my ambition to be a cricketer in future. When I get free classes I go to play cricket in my school with my classmates. I am the favourite student of my sports teacher as I am always punctual, I never come late in my practice sessions and work hard to win the game. My favourite cricket player is Virat Kohli.

There is a famous saying by Virat Kohli where he says that “No cricket team in the world depends on one or two players. The team always plays to win.” We always play to win. I pray to lord everyday to increase my strengths and diminish my weaknesses so that I can conquer this dream of mine and make it a reality.

Playing is a very healthy hobby. It not only increases our stamina and immunity but also makes us look good by changing our physique. Playing is indeed a. great habit and there is no age limitation for anyone to play. It keeps the individual healthy, energetic and active throughout the day.

Moreover, it releases stress, tension and makes our mood good. Playing is a great source of entertainment and fun. Everyone should play one or another sport to stay healthy and fit. I love playing Cricket more than anything else and my family also supports me to make this as a career.

A hobby is anything we do regularly, apart from our main activities to make ourselves happy. I have been learning karate as a hobby since class 3. My hobby keeps me fit and in the best of health and mind. Our fitness teacher once told us the story of Bruce Lee. The story inspired me so much that I enrolled in karate class and started practising regularly.

In connection with karate, I have to take aerobics and other exercises everyday. In the coaching session, our teacher teaches us various kinds of attack and defence techniques. We have to wear the karate outfit during our practice session. To inspire myself, I also read books about many great karatekas (practitioners of karate).

The toughest problem I face in connection with rearing my hobby is managing time. The only span of time that I get to practise karate is immediately after school hours. Though I feel exhausted at that hour, yet my love for the martial art makes me go for practice. At the time of examination I get very little time to pursue my hobby.

My parents have always supported my hobby. My father says that karate can be very helpful during an emergency. This makes me feel proud of my hobby.

I have a very ambitious plan about my hobby. I want to achieve the highest rank in karate, that is, ‘the black belt’ level. I know how difficult it is, yet I want to try my best for it.

My Special Hobby Essay: Trekking (250- 300 Words)

I follow trekking as a hobby. Trekking means walking for a long span of time, may be a week or even several weeks, in natural surroundings that could typically be a forest, a hill side or a long trail by the side of a waterbody. During a trek, self-sufficiency is maintained as far as possible and the trekkers try to enjoy and explore the path.

When I was ten, I went on a hiking venture with my dad’s group. The hiking journey excited me a lot. Then on, I was so interested in hiking that I would accompany any nearby group which went on such explorations. Hiking is a shortened format of trekking. It gradually changed into trekking hobby when I joined a trekking group in school.

Now, I am a proud member of a trekking group, known as YOUNG UNDAUNTED in our school. We go on trekking tours every six months or so. We also have won trophies in this regard. The walls of my house are full with breathtaking trekking snaps I have captured during my treks.

I like trekking because it keeps me physically fit. The long walks provide lower abdomen exercise and being cautious in wild surroundings, makes one smart and prompt. Besides, trekking gives me a sufficient dose of relaxation. When I return from a trekking tour, I feel fresh and energetic.

I idolize our sports teacher who is my trekking hero. He has ventured in many trekking expeditions in the Himalayan valleys. He has taught us many trekking skills. With his advice, I recently bought two pairs of trekking shoes.

I want to continue with my trekking hobby as long as possible. Trekking provides me thrill, pleasure, and experience. It makes life happier. When I go back to normal life after a trekking tour, I can concentrate better on my studies.

My favourite hobby is swimming. I just love swimming and do it whenever find suitable leisure time. As we know, hobby is a task that we do apart from our main occupation for the sheer love of it. Swimming is such an activity for me.

Introduction.

Why do I pursue Swimming?

Swimming is a very good exercise. It has helped me develop a good overall physique. Specially, it helps build up broad shoulders and a strong chest. Swimming also helps improve lung function.

Swimming plays an important part in my life. It gives me pleasure and keeps me in the best of health and mind. Even when I come back from exhaustive school hours, I take a dip in the pool and swim for at least an hour. It relaxes me immediately. I feel dejected when I do not get a chance to swim due to other engagements.

How do I Upgrade?

To be able to become a good swimmer, I take exercises that help me to perform well. The trainer in charge of the pool has taught us some tricks that help us swim faster. I know and practise freestyle swimming, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and sidestroke.

Where do I Get My Inspiration From?

Recently I joined a swimmers’ club where I had an opportunity to learn new tricks from champion swimmers. It gave me immense pleasure.

I get my inspiration from the great Indian swimmer Mihir Sen who crossed the English Channel from Dover to Calais in 1958. I have also read the stories of the great Olympic gold medalists like Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps.

Many of my friends have hobbies like drawing, trekking, dancing, cooking etc. I am also somewhat interested in some of them. However, there is nothing like the spontaneous attraction I feel about swimming. I also think that my hobby is a bit uncommon and it makes me proud.

Kudos and Awards I have Won in Swimming

During the last summer games in our school, I won silver medal in junior freestyle competition and got kudos from my parents, teachers and friends.

I also derived an unexpected benefit from my hobby. My school recently organized a campaign called ‘Friend Mentors’. Therein, I got an opportunity to train a batch of seven primary school students. I taught them the basics of freestyle, butterfly and backstroke swimming. At the end of the camp, I was awarded Rs 2000/- from the school side.

Swimming teaches me benefits of healthy competition. I and my friend Raghu compete with each other in the pool. Raghu is also a very good swimmer, specially at backstroke. He thinks I am good at freestyle. I and Raghav sometimes discuss our merits and drawbacks with respect to swimming.

Swimming is a great soother. It is a lot of fun on Sundays and other holidays. A lot of people happen to come to the pool on such days. On these occasions I enjoy watching kids learn the tricks of the trade. I offer my advice when some of them need it.

Sometimes my parents feel worried about my hobby and forbid me to venture into deeper waters. Even though, my swimming mentor advises never to be afraid but at the same time also opines that caution is the key while swimming.

I remember his words that we must take challenges which seem to be under our control only and not venture into swimming too far in open water bodies like rivers, sea etc.

Overall, swimming is a sports that keeps me in shape and provides good and positive vibes. I love pursuing it as a hobby.

The main reason for following cooking as a hobby is my natural inclination for this. When I see relatives and friends enjoying the taste of the dishes I have prepared, I feel extremely delighted. I have corrected my basics of cooking a thousand times in her company and this has made me a seasoned cook.

I Keep Upgrading

When our basics are correct, we get space to experiment. Though I know how to cook many a dish, I keep learning new recipes everyday. Many online forums and platforms like YouTube help me a lot with upgrading my culinary talent. Besides, I also watch cooking based programs like ‘MasterChef India’ on TV to diversify my cooking acumen.

Sometime back, I read a book ‘Cakes and Bakes’ by master Indian chef Sanjeev Kapoor. He has shared many interesting baking tips to prepare cakes. I realized that cakes and pastries are very important snacks for occasions like birthday parties. So, I thought of honing my baking skills and selected the book. It has widened my cooking views.

I know how to cook traditional north India dishes since childhood. Over time, I have also added other recipes like Dosai, Idli, sambhar, pasta, chowmin etc. to my cooking skills. Currently, I am trying my hand at preparing burgers. I am also learning to prepare mango and lemon pickle.

Moreover, whenever we travel to a different place, I try to learn cooking new dishes particular to that place. For example, we happened to visit Gujarat last year in connection with a wedding. There I learnt cooking two Gujarati dishes – Khandvi and Undhiyu.

Hobby is Related to Personality Development

Cooking has changed me as a person too. Owing to regular cooking, my patience has increased, observation has grown deeper, and innovative ideas keep hovering in my mind. I like to experiment a lot with my recipes. However, I admit that not all my experiments are successful.

Managing Time to Pursue Hobby

Now, I am in class ten and owing to busy study schedules, I do not get enough time to cook my favourite dishes. Still I make it a point to do so once in 2-3 days. I love cooking so much that I cannot keep myself away from it for a long time. To manage time, I do all the necessary chores beforehand and save time for cooking in the evening.

Awards, Kudos, Social Network

Recently I participated in a cooking contest held in my colony. I won the first prize for my recipe called ‘Paneer Pasanda’. It is a mouth watering dish that consists of fried Paneer pieces cooked in thick, spicy gravy. I served it after garnishing with green coriander leaves. Judges found my recipe the best one and when they announced the result, my joy knew no bounds.

Participating in cooking contests and organizing stalls in school functions has won me many friends. Some of them communicate with me regularly. This, on one side has made my social circle wider and on the other, it enables us interact regularly and upgrade our cooking skills.

Once in our school, a dieticians’ campaign was organized. In the camp, some dieticians advised us on the topic of healthy cooking. The dieticians told us why cooking should consume lesser amount of oil, spices and colors. Overall, it was a gripping session, more so for students like me.

Implications of Hobby on Career

Due to my interest in cooking, I have decided to take ‘Home Science’ as a subject in my higher classes. Mom seems to be worried because of this as she thinks ‘Home Science’ as a subject, will hinder my career. Though I am not of the same view, I told mom that we would take the opinion of career counsellors at the right time.

Food being the basic need of mankind and also due to growing number of parties and celebrations in our society, cooking is one skill likely to be in great demand in future. Though I follow cooking as a refreshing and relaxing occupation only, yet it may well become an occupation for which I will be known in social circles. So my attitude towards cooking has never been casual.

I have heard that some parents do not allow their kids to pursue their hobbies. However, they must understand that hobbies like cooking, gardening, and dancing give us a good leisure time away from our regular activities. Focusing hard in studies may make the studies monotonous.

Last but not the least should be a mention of the precautions which I take while cooking. I have to be careful right from lighting the gas and microwave ovens properly to not overusing spices, colours, oil, ghee, butter, and chilly-powder. besides, I hate left over food and so try to cook my recipes in the required quantity only.

I think everyone must pursue a hobby. Hobbies give us a break from our routine activities which may otherwise become monotonous. The refreshing feeling which our hobbies provide, makes us go back to our main occupation in a stronger, composed, and wholesome manner.

In my opinion, this is not a positive development and can have many disadvantages for the individual and society in general. They not only keep you fit and healthy but also contribute towards society’s development. The paucity of time and introduction of alternative means of spending one’s free time are the top two causes for the declining number of people engaging in hobbies today. Demanding jobs and a tough education system make it harder for people to take time out and engage in recreational activities like gardening, dancing, yoga, etc. Additionally, with the new streaming platforms, social media applications, and online gaming communities, people often find themselves on the internet in their spare time rather than stepping out for some simple hobbies. The surge in demand for data and the rising number of online users serve as testament to this statement. With the absence of physical activities comes direct and latent consequences like deteriorating physical health leading to issues like obesity and declining mental health as a result of feeling alienated from society. The individual and the society suffer on account of these effects on physical health, mental health, and community building. For instance, as people increasingly choose the company of their smartphones over their friends and other members of society, they feel increasingly alone and start getting out of shape, as observed by some social scientists at the University of Los Angeles. In contrast, sometimes, more challenging and difficult hobbies can be thrilling. These hobbies can be more rewarding and more satisfying in the end because the person goes through more challenges to reach the endpoint. For instance, video editing and filmmaking are two rather challenging hobbies that can be very rewarding for some people and, thus, more enjoyable. Therefore, in conclusion, I believe that both kinds of hobbies, easy and difficult, can be pleasurable for an individual depending on their preferences. Hence, it is wrong to state that one type of hobby is more enjoyable than the other simply because it is more challenging. I belong to a farmer’s family. After settling down in the metro cities, I have noticed my family craving to spare their time for Mother Nature. Having a family background with an ample number of agricultural jobholders, I decided to devise a small garden of my own. Earlier in my penthouse, I decided to create a small rooftop garden due to lack of space. This is how gardening helped me release the amplitude amount of endorphins in my whole family after a stressful day. Gardening is the most accessible and manageable task for a human being. All it requires is enough motivation for a better yield. It is a decampment towards the serenity and beauty of nature with loads of unadulterated indulgence. Gardening has always helped me look towards a better future. It has maintained me to stay submerged with my fondness for plants and blossoms. It is a form of recreational activity after my school hours. Springing from botanical gardens to every miniature backyard, I have visited all of them. Attending several gardens motivates me to produce a surplus of plants in my garden.

What do I do for my hobby gardening?

Gardening can be done on several types of soil and with numerous varieties of yield. Gardening can be of many types such as herb, flowers, vegetables or kitchen, rose, rock, water, and indoor gardening. According to the needs and availability of tools and garden supplies suited for the purpose, we choose the respective criteria.

Soil is the most important trait for gardening. It requires the accurate level of manure and water to flourish and drop off blooming yield. Soil is a requirement because it constitutes a certain amount of organisms that help in the conversion of plant nutrients from the putrefied subject. To harvest a beautiful garden, healthy soil is the most important necessity. In my rooftop gardens, I have utilized an inadequate amount of space to grow flowering plants and a few creepers and climbers for my mother’s kitchen. Gardening requires an ample amount of attention and time. Starting from the preparation of the soil to the composting till the blossoms are achieved, everything requires dedication. In the beginning, I started with a proper layout for an inadequate stretch. Then I had to pick among the favored and accessible varieties to start with. Obtaining good seeded plants and accessible supplies available at my home, I started my gardening tenure. To help my mom’s kitchen I even planted a few vegetable seeds such as bitter gourd, lemon, chilies, tomatoes, and a few leafy vegetables. I affirmed to keep my plants away from the weeds and pests. I took assistance from my uncle with organic manures and compost to get a better yield and prettier blossoms for every morning to wake up to. I have used unused plastic bottles to grow creepers and a few flowering and herb plants to create an aesthetic outlook for my garden. The proper amount of sun and shade are required as it may inhibit adequate plant growth. Butterflies, honey bees, flower beetles are a regular visitor to my garden. A few of my houseplants are ferns, dracaena, philodendron, and aglaonema. The vegetables I have grown are placed in a sunny spot, and there’s an ample amount of water supply adjacent to it. These vegetables are used in our kitchen daily.

Health Benefits of Gardening

Gardening as a hobby comes with several benefits. Possessing a personal garden helps the family with an amplitude amount of perks.

1. Gardening eliminates weeds.

Studies have shown that unwanted plants take up the required amount of light and nutrient resources necessary for healthy plants. Weeds are the best competitors. To eliminate them, we have to pluck it out.

2. It helps to alleviate stress.

The garden creates a source of well being and reduces the level of stress after an exhausting day. It helps to burn some extra calories, and that results in increasing a surplus level of metabolism. It is much similar to working out daily. It benefits the body and mind.

3. Gardening can boost endorphin levels.

Subsequently, within 30 minutes, it results in lowering the blood pressure level by the release of endorphin levels in the bloodstream. It lifts your mood and makes you happier. It increases your patience level as it directs you to watch a living being grow.

4. Gardening is a source of Vitamin D

When the melanin of your body is exposed to the sun, it helps to obtain some levels of vitamin D. Sun is the best source of vitamin D that helps to provide calcium to your bones for obtaining strength and bone formation.

5. It provides opportunities for pollinators.

Honey Bees, butterflies, and several other pollinators are a regular visitor to the garden. Gardening provides food as a form of pollen and nectar to maintain our food system.

6. Yields healthy food for the family.

Using homemade compost and manure helps to obtain healthy fruits and vegetables. It provides a nutritious diet and helps in reducing the expenditure of a household.

7. Gardening presents extra oxygen to the house.

Gardening provides an extra amount of oxygen, and in addition to that, it helps to remove the unnecessary carbon dioxide and helps to keep the house cool.

Gardening helps to lower the risk of respiratory disorders with a small amount of expense. It is the most productive Hobby with better yields therefore I chose Gardening as my hobby. Creating a beautiful garden is what makes me feel relaxed, and I aim to create a higher-yielding garden with beautiful blossoms. It is a way of amusement and benefits my health as well.

Painting has been a hobby I have embraced for quite some time. Ever since I took the paintbrush and just crafted something on paper, I have never looked back on it. Painting has been a hobby that gives me joy because I can draw my imaginations into an art piece and make the best out of it.

In my own free time, I find peace in painting and looking back to how I spend my leisure, and it has undoubtedly been worth it. My paintings have been quite inspiring to my friends and me as they are mostly of issues in life. Once I sat down and set my mind on a painting, I tend to get into the brush itself and paint just as how I view the inspiration.

As people look for hobbies to engage in, there are certain benefits they look forward to reaping in it. Painting as a hobby has been a great way to relax. In life, I encounter challenges and various stumbling blocks.

I look for my escape in painting so that I can breathe and think about my issues in my own space. When I get challenges instead of overthinking, I tend to draw my energy into painting because the brush has a vibe with me.

I can breathe and paint, and after crafting my art, I feel at peace and relax because I put my focus and think peacefully about the matter. My friends have seen me paint when I am having issues, and they tend to note the tone of my painting reflects my mood because I paint based on issues of life.

Through hard work and the fact that I have learned the skill in painting my confidence has certainly improved. I have often showcased my work to those close to me and several exhibitions, not for sale but for the exchange of compliments.

Through the applaud of the excellent work I get in this hobby, my confidence in handling issues has undoubtedly improved.

Fear of being not good at things has indeed escaped my mind because I see myself worthy of handling matters since I realized that I am a good painter, yet it’s just a hobby I embraced over the years as I was looking for sound therapy.

Getting positive, positive vibes and acknowledgement have indeed built and moulded me to perfect my craft in painting and life.

Painting requires you to be open-minded about how you will go about crafting the perfect art piece. It has undoubtedly helped me be open about how I view my imagination so that I can paint and make the best in my paintings.

I do not articulate my mind on how the painting is supposed to be, but instead, just let my brush and my hand drive and inspire the painting.

In life, this has enabled me to have an open mind on handling issues and become a listener, just like how I listen to my brush. It has helped me become more of a listener and not a complainer on matters.

I have been able to reason with others just like how I can now correctly reason as I paint to make the right curves with my brush. I do not fix myself in because I am not perfect but instead listen and have an open mind to accommodate the thoughts of others.

Painting has enabled me to open up my mind and accommodate other inspirations as I also draw other masterpieces to paint perfectly.

While painting, I have come to appreciate various cultures and diversities of life. As I paint, I can include multiple cultures and ways of life through which people have lived and understand the difference between them and me.

I have learned quite a lot through various pieces of paint canvases as people paint in themes of life which have been my focus. It has enabled me to relate well with people as I understand them better through painting and getting to know their ways and reasons behind their cultures.

Writing My Autobiography

A re you still writing?” he asked.

“I am,” I answered.

“What are you working on at the moment?”

“An autobiography,” I said.

“Interesting,” he replied. “Whose?”

The implication here, you will note, is that mine hasn’t been a life sufficiently interesting to merit an autobiography. The implication isn’t altogether foolish. Most autobiographies, at least the best autobiographies, have been written by people who have historical standing, or have known many important people, or have lived in significant times, or have noteworthy family connections or serious lessons to convey . I qualify on none of these grounds. Not that, roughly two years ago when I sat down to write my autobiography, I let that stop me.

An autobiography, to state the obvious, is at base a biography written by its own subject. But how is one to write it: as a matter of setting the record straight, as a form of confessional, as a mode of seeking justice, or as a justification of one’s life? “An autobiography,” wrote George Orwell, “is only to be trusted when it reveals something disgraceful. A man who gives a good account of himself is probably lying, since any life when viewed from the inside is simply a series of defeats.” Is this true? I prefer to think not.

Autobiography is a complex enterprise, calling for its author not only to know himself but to be honest in conveying that knowledge. “I could inform the dullest author how he might write an interesting book,” wrote Samuel Taylor Coleridge. “Let him relate the events of his own life with Honesty, not disguising the feelings that accompanied them.” One of the nicest things about being a professor, it has been said, is that one gets to talk for fifty minutes without being interrupted. So one of the allurements of autobiography is that one gets to write hundreds of pages about that eminently fascinating character, oneself, even if in doing so one only establishes one’s insignificance.

The great autobiographies—of which there have not been all that many—have been wildly various. One of the first, that of the Renaissance sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, is marked by an almost unrelieved braggadocio: No artist was more perfect, no warrior more brave, no lover more pleasing than the author, or so he would have us believe. Edward Gibbon’s autobiography, though elegantly written, is disappointing in its brevity. That of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, heavily striking the confessional note, might have been told in a booth to a priest. Ben Franklin’s autobiography is full of advice on how the rest of us should live. John Stuart Mill’s is astounding in its account of its author’s prodigiously early education, which began with his learning Greek under his father’s instruction at the age of three. Then there is Henry Adams’s autobiography, suffused with disappointment over his feeling out of joint with his times and the world’s not recognizing his true value. In Making It , Norman Podhoretz wrote an autobiography informed by a single message, which he termed a “dirty little secret,” namely that there is nothing wrong with ambition and that success, despite what leftist intellectuals might claim, is nothing to be ashamed of.

Please note that all of these are books written by men. Might it be that women lack the vanity required to write—or should I say “indulge in”—the literary act of autobiography? In Mary Beard’s Emperor of Rome , I recently read that Agrippina the Younger, the mother of Nero, wrote her autobiography, which has not survived, and which Mary Beard counts as “one of the great losses of all classical literature.” I wish that Jane Austen had written an autobiography, and so too George Eliot and Willa Cather. Perhaps these three women, great writers all, were too sensibly modest for autobiography, that least modest of all literary forms.

A utobiography can be the making or breaking of writers who attempt it. John Stuart Mill’s autobiography has gone a long way toward humanizing a writer whose other writings tend toward the coldly formal. Harold Laski wrote that Mill’s “ Autobiography , in the end the most imperishable of his writings, is a record as noble as any in our literature of consistent devotion to the public good.”

If Mill’s autobiography humanized him, the autobiography of the novelist Anthony Trollope did for him something approaching the reverse. In An Autobiography , Trollope disdains the notion of an author’s needing inspiration to write well. He reports that “there was no day on which it was my positive duty to write for the publishers, as it was my duty to write reports for the Post Office,” where he had a regular job. “I was free to be idle if I pleased. But as I had made up my mind to undertake this second profession [that of novelist], I found it to be expedient to bind myself by certain self-imposed laws.” Trollope recounts—emphasis here on “counts”—that as a novelist he averages forty pages per week, at 250 words per page. He writes: “There are those who would be ashamed to subject themselves to such a taskmaster, and who think that the man who works with his imagination should allow himself to wait till inspiration moves him. When I have heard such doctrine preached, I have hardly been able to repress my scorn.” Trollope then mentions that on the day after he finished his novel Doctor Thorne , he began writing his next novel, The Bertrams . For a long spell the literati refused to forgive Trollope for shearing inspiration away from the creation of literary art, for comparing the job of the novelist to a job at the post office. Only the splendid quality of his many novels eventually won him forgiveness and proper recognition.

A serious biography takes up what the world thinks of its subject, what his friends and family think of him, and—if the information is available in letters, diaries, journals, or interviews—what he thinks of himself. An autobiography is ultimately about the last question: what the author thinks of himself. Yet how many of us have sufficient self-knowledge to give a convincing answer? In her splendid novel Memoirs of Hadrian , Marguerite Yourcenar has Hadrian note: “When I seek deep within me for knowledge of myself what I find is obscure, internal, unformulated, and as secret as any complicity.” The unexamined life may not be worth living, but the scrupulously examined one is rare indeed.

My own life has not provided the richest fodder for autobiography. For one thing, it has not featured much in the way of drama. For another, good fortune has allowed me the freedom to do with my life much as I have wished. I have given my autobiography the title Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life , with the subtitle Especially If You’ve Had a Lucky Life . Now well along in its closing chapter, mine, I contend, has been thus far—here I pause to touch wood—a most lucky life.

My title derives from the story of Croesus, who ruled the country of Lydia from circa 585–547 b.c. , and who is perhaps today best known for the phrase “rich as Croesus.” The vastly wealthy Croesus thought himself the luckiest man on earth and asked confirmation of this from Solon, the wise Athenian, who told him that in fact the luckiest man on earth was another Athenian who had two sons in that year’s Olympics. When Croesus asked who was second luckiest, Solon cited another Greek who had a most happy family life. Croesus was displeased but not convinced by Solon’s answers. Years later he was captured by the Persian Cyrus, divested of his kingdom and his wealth, and set on a pyre to be burned alive, before which he was heard to exclaim that Solon had been right. The moral of the story is, of course: Never say you have had a lucky life until you know how your life ends.

I have known serious sadness in my life. I have undergone a divorce. I have become a member of that most dolorous of clubs, parents who have buried one of their children. Yet I have had much to be grateful for. In the final paragraph of a book I wrote some years ago on the subject of ambition, I noted that “We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, or the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing.” In all these realms, I lucked out. I was born to intelligent, kindly parents; at a time that, though I was drafted into the army, allowed me to miss being called up to fight in any wars; and in the largely unmitigated prosperity enjoyed by the world’s most interesting country, the United States of America.

Writing is a form of discovery. Yet can even writing ferret out the quality and meaning of one’s own life? Alexis de Tocqueville, the endlessly quotable Tocqueville, wrote: “The fate of individuals is still more hidden than that of peoples,” and “the destinies of individuals are often as uncertain as those of nations.” Fate, destiny, those two great tricksters, who knows what they have in store for one, even in the final days of one’s life? I, for example, as late as the age of eighteen, had never heard the word “intellectual.” If you had asked me what a man of letters was, I would have said a guy who works at the post office. Yet I have been destined to function as an intellectual for the better part of my adult life, and have more than once been called a man of letters. Fate, destiny, go figure!

T he first question that arises in writing one’s autobiography is what to include and what to exclude. Take, for starters, sex. In his nearly seven-hundred-page autobiography, Journeys of the Mind , the historian of late antiquity Peter Brown waits until page 581 to mention, in the most glancing way, that he is married. Forty or so pages later, the name of a second wife is mentioned. Whether he had children with either of these wives, we never learn. But then, Brown’s is a purely intellectual autobiography, concerned all but exclusively with the development of the author’s mind and those who influenced that development.

My autobiography, though less than half the length of Brown’s, allowed no such luxury of reticence. Sex, especially when I was an adolescent, was a central subject, close to a preoccupation. After all, boys—as I frequently instructed my beautiful granddaughter Annabelle when she was growing up—are brutes. I came of age BP, or Before the Pill, and consummated sex, known in that day as “going all the way,” was not then a serious possibility. Too much was at risk—pregnancy, loss of reputation—for middle-class girls. My friends and I turned to prostitution.

Apart from occasionally picking up streetwalkers on some of Chicago’s darker streets, prostitution for the most part meant trips of sixty or so miles to the bordellos of Braidwood or Kankakee, Illinois. The sex, costing $3, was less than perfunctory. (“Don’t bother to take off your socks or that sweater,” one was instructed.) What was entailed was less sensual pleasure than a rite of passage, of becoming a man, of “losing your cherry,” a phrase I have only recently learned means forgoing one’s innocence. We usually went on these trips in groups of five or six in one or another of our fathers’ cars. Much joking on the way up and even more on the way back. Along Chicago’s Outer Drive, which we took home in those days, there was a Dad’s Old Fashioned Root Beer sign that read, “Have you had it lately?,” which always got a good laugh.

I like to think of myself as a shy pornographer, or, perhaps better, a sly pornographer. By this I mean that in my fiction and where necessary in my essays I do not shy away from the subject of sex, only from the need to describe it in any of its lurid details. So I have done in my autobiography. On the subject of sex in my first marriage (of two), for example, I say merely, “I did not want my money back.” But, then, all sex, if one comes to think about it, is essentially comic, except of course one’s own.

On the inclusion-exclusion question, the next subject I had to consider was money, or my personal finances. Financially I have nothing to brag about. In my autobiography I do, though, occasionally give the exact salaries—none of them spectacular—of the jobs I’ve held. With some hesitation (lest it seem boasting) I mention that a book I wrote on the subject of snobbery earned, with its paperback sale, roughly half-a-million dollars. I fail to mention those of my books that earned paltry royalties, or, as I came to think of them, peasantries. In my autobiography, I contented myself with noting my good fortune in being able to earn enough money doing pretty much what I wished to do and ending up having acquired enough money not to worry overmuch about financial matters. Like the man said, a lucky life.

If I deal glancingly in my autobiography with sex and personal finances, I tried to take a pass on politics. My own political development is of little interest. I started out in my political life a fairly standard liberal—which in those days meant despising Richard Nixon—and have ended up today contemptuous of both our political parties: Tweedledum and Tweedledumber, as the critic Dwight Macdonald referred to them. Forgive the self-congratulatory note, but in politics I prefer to think myself a member in good standing of that third American political party, never alas on the ballot, the anti-BS party.

Of course, sometimes one needs to have a politics, if only to fight off the politics of others. Ours is a time when politics seems to be swamping all else: art, education, journalism, culture generally. I have had the dubious distinction of having been “canceled,” for what were thought my political views, and I write about this experience in my autobiography. I was fired from the editorship of Phi Beta Kappa’s quarterly magazine, the American Scholar —a job I had held for more than twenty years—because of my ostensibly conservative, I suppose I ought to make that “right-wing,” politics. My chief cancellers were two academic feminists and an African-American historian-biographer, who sat on the senate, or governing board, of Phi Beta Kappa.

T he official version given out by Phi Beta Kappa for my cancellation—in those days still known as a firing—was that the magazine was losing subscribers and needed to seek younger readers. Neither assertion was true, but both currently appear in the Wikipedia entry under my name. The New York Times also printed this “official” but untrue version of my cancellation. In fact, I was canceled because I had failed to run anything in the magazine about academic feminism or race, both subjects that had already been done to death elsewhere and that I thought cliché-ridden and hence of little interest for a magazine I specifically tried to keep apolitical. During my twenty-two years at the American Scholar , the name of no current United States president was mentioned. If anything resembling a theme emerged during my editorship, it was the preservation of the tradition of the liberal arts, a subject on which I was able to acquire contributions from Jacques Barzun, Paul Kristeller, Hugh Trevor-Roper, Frederick Crews, and others.

That I was fired not for anything I had done but for things I had failed to do is an indication of how far we had come in the realm of political correctness. I take up this topic in my autobiography, one theme of which is the vast changes that have taken place in American culture over my lifetime. A notable example is an essay on homosexuality that I wrote and published in Harper’s in 1970, a mere fifty-three years ago. The essay made the points that we still did not know much about the origin of male homosexuality, that there was much hypocrisy concerning the subject, that homosexuals were living under considerable social pressure and prejudice, and that given a choice, most people would prefer that their children not be homosexual. This, as I say, was in 1970, before the gay liberation movement had got underway in earnest. The essay attracted a vast number of letters in opposition, and a man named Merle Miller, who claimed I was calling for genocide of homosexuals, wrote a book based on the essay. Gore Vidal, never known for his temperate reasoning, claimed my argument was ad Hitlerum . (Vidal, after contracting Epstein-Barr virus late in life, claimed that “Joseph Epstein gave it to me.”) I have never reprinted the essay in any of my collections because I felt that it would stir up too much strong feeling. For what it is worth, I also happen to be pleased by the greater tolerance accorded homosexuality in the half century since my essay was published.

The larger point is that today neither Harper’s nor any other mainstream magazine would dare to publish that essay. Yet a few years after the essay was published, I was offered a job teaching in the English Department of Northwestern University, and the year after that, I was appointed editor of the American Scholar. Today, of course, neither job would have been available to me.

Do these matters—my cancellation from the American Scholar , my unearned reputation as a homophobe—come under the heading of self-justification? Perhaps so. But then, what better, or at least more convenient, place to attempt to justify oneself than in one’s autobiography?

Many changes have taken place in my lifetime, some for the better, some for the worse, some whose value cannot yet be known. I note, for example, if not the death then the attenuation of the extended family (nephews, nieces, cousins) in American life. Whereas much of my parents’ social life revolved around an extensive cousinage, I today have grandnephews and grandnieces living on both coasts whom I have never met and probably never shall. I imagine some of them one day being notified of my death and responding, “Really? [Pause] What’s for dinner?”

I take up in my autobiography what Philip Rieff called, in his book of this title, the Triumph of the Therapeutic, a development that has altered child-rearing, artistic creation, and much else in our culture. Although the doctrines of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and others are no longer taken as gospel, their secondary influence has conquered much of modern culture. My parents’ generation did not hold with therapeutic culture, which contends that the essentials of life are the achievement of self-esteem and individual happiness, replacing honor, courage, kindness, and generosity.

In my autobiography, I note that when my mother was depressed by her knowledge that she was dying of cancer, a friend suggested that there were support groups for people with terminal diseases, one of which might be helpful. I imagined telling my mother about such groups, and her response: “Let me see,” she is likely to have said. “You want me to go into a room with strangers, where I will listen to their problems and then I’ll tell them mine, and this will make me feel better.” Pause. “Is this the kind of idiot I’ve raised as a son?”

T hen there is digital culture, the verdict on which is not yet in. Digital culture has changed the way we read, think, make social connections, do business, and so much more. I write in my autobiography that in its consequences digital culture is up there with the printing press and the automobile. Its influence is still far from fully fathomed.

One of my challenges in writing my autobiography was to avoid seeming to brag about my quite modest accomplishments. In the Rhetoric , Aristotle writes: “Speaking at length about oneself, making false claims, taking the credit for what another has done, these are signs of boastfulness.” I tried not to lapse into boasting. Yet at one point I quote Jacques Barzun, in a letter to me, claiming that as a writer I am in the direct line of William Hazlitt, though in some ways better, for my task—that of finding the proper language to establish both intimacy and critical distance—is in the current day more difficult than in Hazlitt’s. At least I deliberately neglected to mention that, in response to my being fired from the American Scholar, Daniel Patrick Moynihan flew an American flag at half-mast over the Capitol, a flag he sent to me as a souvenir. Quoting others about my accomplishments, is this anything other than boasting by other means? I hope so, though even now I’m not altogether sure.

I have a certain pride in these modest accomplishments. Setting out in life, I never thought I should publish some thirty-odd books or have the good luck to continue writing well into my eighties. The question for me as an autobiographer was how to express that pride without preening. The most efficient way, of course, is never to write an autobiography.

Why, then, did I write mine? Although I have earlier characterized writing as a form of discovery, I did not, in writing my autobiography, expect to discover many radically new things about my character or the general lineaments of my life. Nor did I think that my life bore any lessons that were important to others. I had, and still have, little to confess; I have no hidden desire to be spanked by an NFL linebacker in a nun’s habit. A writer, a mere scribbler, I have led a largely spectatorial life, standing on the sidelines, glass of wine in hand, watching the circus pass before me.

Still, I wrote my autobiography, based in a loose way on Wordsworth’s notion that poetry arises from “emotion recollected in tranquility.” Writing it gave me an opportunity to review my life at the end of my life in a tranquil manner. I was able to note certain trends, parallels, and phenomena that have marked my life and set my destiny.

The first of these, as I remarked earlier, was the fortunate time in which I was born, namely the tail end of the Great Depression—to be specific, in 1937. Because of the Depression, people were having fewer children, and often having them later. (My mother was twenty-seven, my father thirty at my birth.) Born when it was, my generation, though subject to the draft—not, in my experience of it, a bad thing—danced between the wars: We were too young for Korea, too old for Vietnam. We were also children during World War II, the last war the country fully supported, which gave us a love of our country. Ours was a low-population generation, untroubled by the vagaries of college admissions or the trauma of rejection by the school of one’s choice. Colleges, in fact, wanted us.

Or consider parents, another fateful phenomenon over which one has no choice. To be born to thoughtless, or disagreeable, or depressed, or deeply neurotic parents cannot but substantially affect all one’s days. Having a father who is hugely successful in the world can be as dampening to the spirit as having a father who is a failure. And yet about all this one has no say. I have given the chapter on my parents the title “A Winning Ticket in the Parents Lottery,” for my own parents, though neither went to college, were thoughtful, honorable, and in no way psychologically crushing. They gave my younger brother and me the freedom to develop on our own; they never told me what schools to attend, what work to seek, whom or when to marry. I knew I was never at the center of my parents’ lives, yet I also knew I could count on them when I needed their support, which more than once I did, and they did not fail to come through. As I say, a winning ticket.

As one writes about one’s own life, certain themes are likely to emerge that hadn’t previously stood out so emphatically. In my case, one persistent motif is that of older boys, then older men, who have supported or aided me in various ways. A boy nearly two years older than I named Jack Libby saw to it that I wasn’t bullied or pushed around in a neighborhood where I was the youngest kid on the block. In high school, a boy to whom I have given the name Jeremy Klein taught me a thing or two about gambling and corruption generally. Later in life, men eight, nine, ten, even twenty or more years older than I promoted my career: Hilton Kramer in promoting my candidacy for the editorship of the American Scholar , Irving Howe in helping me get a teaching job (without an advanced degree) at Northwestern, John Gross in publishing me regularly on important subjects in the Times Literary Supplement , Edward Shils in ways too numerous to mention. Something there was about me, evidently, that was highly protégéable.

I haven’t yet seen the index for my autobiography, but my guess is that it could have been name-ier. I failed, for example, to include my brief but pleasing friendship with Sol Linowitz. Sol was the chairman of Xerox, and later served the Johnson administration as ambassador to the Organization of American States. He also happened to be a reader of mine, and on my various trips to Washington I was often his guest at the F Street Club, a political lunch club where he reserved a private room in which we told each other jokes, chiefly Jewish jokes. I might also have added my six years as a member of the National Council of the National Endowment for the Arts, whose members included the actors Robert Stack and Celeste Holm, the Balanchine dancer Arthur Mitchell, Robert Joffrey, the soprano Renée Fleming, the novelist Toni Morrison, the dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, the architect I. M. Pei, the painter Helen Frankenthaler, and other highly droppable names.

Confronting one’s regrets is another inescapable element in writing one’s autobiography. Ah, regrets: the red MG convertible one didn’t buy in one’s twenties, the elegant young Asian woman one should have asked to dinner, the year one failed to spend in Paris. The greater the number of one’s regrets, the grander their scope, the sadder, at its close, one’s life figures to be. I come out fairly well in the regrets ledger. I regret not having studied classics at university, and so today I cannot read ancient Greek. I regret not having been a better father to my sons. I regret not asking my mother more questions about her family and not telling my father what a good man I thought he was. As regrets go, these are not minor, yet neither have I found them to be crippling.

Then there is the matter of recognizing one’s quirks, or peculiar habits. A notable one of mine, acquired late in life, is to have become near to the reverse of a hypochondriac. I have not yet reached the stage of anosognosia, or the belief that one is well when one is ill—a stage, by the way, that Chekhov, himself a physician, seems to have attained. I take vitamins, get flu and Covid shots, and watch what I eat, but I try to steer clear of physicians. This tendency kicked in not long after my decades-long primary care physician retired. In his The Body: A Guide for Occupants , Bill Bryson defines good health as the health enjoyed by someone who hasn’t had a physical lately. The ancients made this point more directly, advising bene caca et declina medicos (translation on request) . For a variety of reasons, physicians of the current day are fond of sending patients for a multiplicity of tests: bone density tests, colonoscopies, biopsies, X-rays of all sorts, CT scans, MRIs, stopping only at SATs. I am not keen to discover ailments that don’t bother me. At the age of eighty-seven, I figure I am playing with house money, and I have no wish to upset the house by prodding my health in search of imperfections any more than is absolutely necessary.

The older one gets, unless one’s life is lived in pain or deepest regret, the more fortunate one feels. Not always, not everyone, I suppose. “The longer I live, the more I am inclined to the belief that this earth is used by other planets as a lunatic asylum,” said George Bernard Shaw, who lived to age ninety-four. Though the world seems to be in a hell of a shape just now, I nonetheless prefer to delay my exit for as long as I can. I like it here, continue to find much that is interesting and amusing, and have no wish to depart the planet.

Still, with advancing years I have found my interests narrowing. Not least among my waning interests is that in travel. I like my domestic routine too much to abandon it for foreign countries where the natives figure to be wearing Air Jordan shoes, Ralph Lauren shirts, and cargo pants. Magazines that I once looked forward to, many of which I have written for in the past, no longer contain much that I find worth reading. A former moviegoer, I haven’t been to a movie theater in at least a decade. The high price of concert and opera tickets has driven me away. The supposedly great American playwrights—Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neill, Edward Albee—have never seemed all that good to me, and I miss them not at all. If all this sounds like a complaint that the culture has deserted me, I don’t feel that it has. I can still listen to my beloved Mozart on discs, read Tolstoy, Jane Austen, Dickens, George Eliot, Willa Cather, and the other great novelists, watch the splendid movies of earlier days on Turner Classics and HBO—live, in other words, on the culture of the past.

“Vho needs dis?” Igor Stravinsky is supposed to have remarked when presented with some new phenomena of the avant-garde or other work in the realm of art without obvious benefit. “Vho needs dis?” is a question that occurred to me more than once or twice as I wrote my autobiography. All I can say is that those who read my autobiography will read of the life of a man lucky enough to have devoted the better part of his days to fitting words together into sentences, sentences into paragraphs, and paragraphs into essays and stories on a wide variety of topics. Now in his autobiography all the sentences and paragraphs are about his own life. He hopes that these sentences are well made, these paragraphs have a point, and together they attain to a respectable truth quotient, containing no falsehoods whatsoever. He hopes that, on these modest grounds at least, his autobiography qualifies as worth reading.

From Pizzagate to the 2020 Election: Forcing Liars to Pay or Apologize

Michael J. Gottlieb can never remember the exact amount — it’s $148,169,000— that a jury ordered Rudolph W. Giuliani to pay the Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss. But Ms. Freeman’s words after the December 2023 victory are indelible to him.

“Don’t waste your time being angry at those who did this to me and my daughter,” said Ms. Freeman, 65, who with her daughter Ms. Moss, 39, was falsely accused by Mr. Giuliani of aiding an imagined plot to steal the 2020 presidential election.

“We are more than conquerors.”

Less than a decade ago, the two women would have struggled to find a lawyer. But Mr. Gottlieb, a partner at the firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher and a former associate counsel in the Obama White House, represented them for free. Convinced that viral lies threaten public discourse and democracy, he is at the forefront of a small but growing cadre of lawyers deploying defamation, one of the oldest areas of the law, as a weapon against a tide of political disinformation.

Mr. Gottlieb has also represented the owner of the Washington pizzeria targeted by “Pizzagate” conspiracy theorists as well as the brother of Seth Rich, a young Democratic National Committee staff member whose 2016 murder ignited bogus theories implicating his family . In the Giuliani case, Mr. Gottlieb, his law partner Meryl Governski and other members of his team worked with Protect Democracy, a nonpartisan group that pushes for laws and policies to counter what it sees as authoritarian threats.

Before the Trump era and the explosion of social media, though, such cases were virtually nonexistent.

“The new information landscape we’re in is a little bit like the Wild West — a lawless space,” said Ian Bassin, a co-founder of Protect Democracy. Lawyers, he said, have turned to defamation, which is legally defined as any false information, either published, broadcast or spoken, that harms the reputation of a person, business or organization. “It’s one of the most effective and only strategies for dealing with these out-and-out falsehoods,” Mr. Bassin said.

In the past few years, more than a dozen high-profile defamation cases have made their way through the courts. A majority have been brought against defendants on the right, but the right brings lawsuits too, often against media organizations.

In 2020 and 2021, The Washington Post, CNN and NBC settled a defamation case brought by Nick Sandmann, a Kentucky high school student, who said the outlets had wrongly described his encounter with a Native American elder as a racially tinged confrontation. Mr. Sandmann’s suit against other outlets, including The New York Times, ended last week when the Supreme Court declined to hear the case .

Payouts have been particularly large for defamation cases against the right. In January the lawyer Roberta Kaplan defeated former President Donald J. Trump in court when a jury ordered him to pay $83 million for defaming her client, E. Jean Carroll , a writer he sexually abused. Last year lawyers from the firm Susman Godfrey secured a $787.5 million settlement for Dominion Voting Systems from Fox News, one of the biggest ever in a defamation case, after Fox aired bogus theories falsely linking the company to election fraud. In late 2022 Sandy Hook families defamed by the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones won a total of nearly $1.5 billion from juries in Texas and Connecticut, though Mr. Jones has yet to pay them anything.

In other cases, the people harmed, like Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss, cannot afford lawyers or struggle to find firms willing to pursue defendants unable or resistant to paying big damages, like Mr. Giuliani. Mr. Gottlieb has tried to fill that gap.

“The cost of bringing a defamation suit to trial can be enormous, often exceeding a quarter-million dollars’ worth of expenses, to say nothing of the value of attorney time,” said Mark Bankston, a lawyer for some of the Sandy Hook families defamed by Mr. Jones.

Mr. Gottlieb and his team refer to their cases as a “hobby” in service to those whose lives and reputations have been damaged by people with power and large online followings. “I’ve always despised bullies that pick on defenseless or seemingly defenseless people,” Mr. Gottlieb, 47, said in an interview in his K Street office in Washington. “There are so many ways to make your political points without endangering individual people’s lives.”

Mr. Gottlieb’s day job is filled with the powerful client list more typical of big Washington law firms. He has represented Venezuela’s Citgo petroleum company; helped the billionaire Steven A. Cohen beat a potential lifetime ban on managing client money after accusations of insider trading at Mr. Cohen’s former hedge fund; and worked with President Biden’s son Hunter on behalf of a Romanian real estate tycoon whose seven-year prison sentence for corruption was later vacated by a Romanian court .

“I understand there are definitely people who would say, ‘Wait a minute — litigation for Citgo is not the same as the litigation you’re doing for Ruby and Shaye,’” he said. “I feel fortunate to have had a career where I’ve had a wide variety of cases and have a practice that works different skill sets and different parts of my brain.”

“However people want to think about it and look at it is sort of fine with me.”

The Post-Truth World

Mr. Gottlieb, who was a clerk for Justice John Paul Stevens and served on an Obama administration anti-corruption task force in Afghanistan, had his first foray into the post-truth world in 2016. That was when Mr. Jones and his Infowars outlet spread the lie that Hillary Clinton and Democratic Party operatives were running a child sex trafficking ring out of Comet Ping Pong, a Washington pizzeria owned by James Alefantis.

In December of that year, a man who had been binging on Infowars “Pizzagate” episodes fired a rifle inside the restaurant . No one was injured, but the gunman’s trip to Washington to avenge an imagined crime foreshadowed a series of violent attacks by conspiracy theorists, including the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.

Mr. Jones insisted that the First Amendment protected the lies he had broadcast, like most defendants in these cases. But threatened with a lawsuit, he made an on-air retraction and removed all Pizzagate content from Infowars’ website and social media channels. The full settlement remains confidential.

Soon after the Pizzagate case, Mr. Gottlieb represented Aaron Rich, whose brother Seth Rich, 27, worked for the Democratic National Committee and was gunned down in a botched robbery in 2016. The case remains unsolved, and wild theories that Seth Rich was killed by Democrats spread from online fever swamps to Fox News. Aaron Rich and his parents were implicated in the plots, doxxed and harassed.

“If this had happened to me or my brother or sister and somebody was doing this to my parents, I would go ballistic,” Mr. Gottlieb said. “And no one was helping them.”

In 2018 Mr. Gottlieb and Aaron Rich sued The Washington Times as well as an internet provocateur, Matt Couch, and a businessman, Ed Butowsky, for spreading falsehoods that the two brothers had sold D.N.C. documents in a plot that resulted in Seth Rich’s murder. Mr. Rich eventually received a confidential settlement that included a retraction of the falsehoods spread by both men and the newspaper, as well as an apology to the Rich family. Mr. Rich’s parents retained Susman Godfrey and sued Fox News. They obtained a confidential cash settlement, but no apology.

The Rich case had taken years. At one point Mr. Gottlieb was named in a sweeping defamation lawsuit filed by one of the defendants, which was later dropped.

The aftermath of the 2020 election brought more calls from potential clients. Mr. Gottlieb appealed for help to Mr. Bassin, who had served with Mr. Gottlieb in the Obama White House Counsel’s Office.

The Georgia Case

Less than two months later, Mr. Gottlieb and his team were writing the complaint in Ruby Freeman, et al., v. Rudolph Giuliani.

In his frenzied public scramble to make his case that the 2020 election was stolen from Mr. Trump, Mr. Giuliani, the former president’s lawyer, had spread the false story that Ms. Freeman and her daughter Ms. Moss had colluded to falsify results while counting ballots in Georgia. He falsely claimed that a video showing Ms. Freeman handing a small item to her daughter — a ginger mint — was the two women exchanging USB thumb drives “as if they’re vials of heroin and cocaine.”

Mr. Trump echoed the bogus allegations. In an infamous taped phone call with Georgia election officials, Mr. Trump named Ms. Freeman again and again, calling her a “professional vote scammer” and “hustler.”

Threats poured in to the two women. People called them traitors and, using racial slurs, demanded they be lynched or shot. Others banged on Ms. Freeman’s front door and lurked outside her home, forcing her into hiding. Ms. Moss had to give up her job as an election worker and struggled to find work.

Mr. Giuliani said he would prove his innocence. But he failed to submit court-ordered documents, testify or call witnesses. In the courtroom, he fiddled with his phone and rolled his eyes while the two women described their terror.

In December, a jury in federal court in Washington ordered Mr. Giuliani to pay Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss the $148 million. The case was put on hold after Mr. Giuliani declared bankruptcy, and Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss are now suing Mr. Giuliani again, for his continued false statements about them.

Law for Truth, part of Protect Democracy, has in the meantime filed defamation suits against the makers of the election conspiracy theory film “2000 Mules”; James O’Keefe, the former leader of Project Veritas, a right-wing group known for its sting operations; and Kari Lake, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Arizona, on behalf of people smeared by lies Ms. Lake told about the 2020 election.

Despite the activity, lawyers who see themselves as crusaders against lies are not declaring victory. Their cases are high profile and target key disinformation spreaders, but they acknowledge that they do not put a dent in more general widespread disinformation, like false statements about Covid vaccines.

“I think these lawsuits may be effective in stemming some of the worst viral disinformation,” said Katie Fallow, a senior counsel at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University. “But there may be limits to how effective these lawsuits can be when there are other incentives, particularly political ones, to keep spreading it.”
