Instructions For Teaching Cursive Writing

Easy cursive writing instructions.

Teaching cursive writing can be easy if you make it an adventure. Basically there are six strokes to connect letters:

  • A short upswing,
  • A short upswing over to two on the clock,
  • A tall upswing,
  • A short dip,
  • A short dip over to two on the clock,

See more instructions below.

If your elementary school students already know how to write in manuscript, encourage them that writing in cursive is as easy as connecting the letters together. The rest is style.

Write the manuscript alphabet on the board or a piece of paper, or some part of it. Then make the connections both on the board and in their minds by drawing the connecting strokes.

Truly, that's most of writing in cursive.

How To Write Cursive For Beginners

With beginners or those who struggle, another idea for teaching cursive handwriting is to drag your lines on the board as you move to write the next letter in a word. Say the letter or its sound as you write the letters naming the strokes you're using.

Students like seeing that

  • Cursive is smooth and flowing.
  • Cursive is pretty and makes fancy writing.
  • Writing in cursive is faster than manuscript writing and doesn't use as many starts and stops.
  • Cursive writing helps children see the end of one word and the start of the next word.

What was that?

Practicing cursive offers an "Aha!" moment for some reluctant readers. When they see the break between the words in their own handwriting, they often make a better association for where words start and where they end in their reading, certainly in their handwriting. :-)

Cursive Writing Instructions For Adults

Cursive writing instructions for adults is the same as for children. A beginner is a beginner.

Learning how to write in cursive as an adult can actually be easier, especiall if you've been printing with an italic hand , meaning your letters already slant as if for cursive script.

Best advice? Long story short?

Connect the letters as you write.

You can learn style as you practice writing in cursive hand.

For adults who will be using these cursive script sheets print the pages "two-up" so that you can use the smaller font and less paper.

No sense trudging through larger handwriting to learn cursive.

It is the same for basic cursive practice sheets for older kids and high school students.  Keep it short and sweet.

1. The Alphabet In Cursive

Hi! I recommend products that I think will help you and your children. If you buy through my links I may earn ad commissions at  NO  extra cost to you. See my  FTC Disclosure .

The Writing Road To Reading Book by Romalda Spalding and Mary North

Basically, there are five cursive strokes to add to the manuscript letters.

Romalda Spalding has an excellent description in her book at Amazon,   The Writing Road to Reading . In a way, this is my favorite cursive writing book as she makes cursive seem easy.

The whole lesson is only six pages and can be taught in just a few classes. Truly, I've seen even small children learn to write in cursive in just two weeks using what she wrote.

She taught several general rules like "All letters sit on the base line." Then she writes that you should teach the terms for the five strokes as you show how to connect the letters:

  • A short upswing from the base line
  • A tall upswing from the base line
  • A short upswing that curves over to 2 on the clock
  • A short dip kept at the mid point.
  • A short dip that curves over to two on the clock

You can read more about using her book for teaching reading by teaching writing .

Usually, the capital letters do not connect with the rest of a word, yet these capitals letters can be connected to the rest of a word:

  • A, C, E, H, J, L, M, N, R, U, X, Y, Z

Once your students have learned both upper and lower case cursive, they can stay sharp practicing this cursive sentence with all letters present:

  • The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Why put upper case letters first? Children often learn best what they learn first.

Since most cursive letter writing is lower case and since most cursive words practice is lower case, it is a good idea to practice these cursive letters first.

2. free cursive writing worksheets using difficult cursive strokes.

Enter: The short dip.

Many times it's hardest for children to get the idea of connecting letters that use the short dip or a connecting loop at the midpoint or midline.

Staying at the mid-line is the trick, and these practice cursive worksheets are the answer.

Since b and o each end at the mid-line, they are difficult letter combinations. Practicing letter combinations with this stroke makes the letters easier to form in everyday handwriting in a continuous stretch of letters.

Use these free cursive writing worksheets to show your students how to write cursive letters that end with a short dip at the midpoint.

Cursive Letters

Learning all of the letters of the alphabet in cursive

Lowercase Letters

Capital letters.

As a former elementary school teacher for many years, I mastered and taught the standard “D’Nealian” style of cursive to my students. D’Nealian is the most commonly taught cursive writing style in the US, to those who are first learning.

I created this website with the express purpose of helping students, teachers, homeschoolers, and anyone else who has an interest in learning how to write cursive.

I try to make it easy to understand how to write the cursive alphabet through worksheets and how-to videos. We hope you find the cursive letter worksheets and videos informative and helpful so that you can master the art of cursive writing in no time.

writing practice cursive

Try our online cursive tool

Write in your own text here…, here is your text in a fun way that you can copy and paste to social media or to a friend…, cursive lowercase letters.

For anyone who wants to learn cursive letters, the first place to start is with cursive lowercase letters. While some of the cursive letters are similar to their lowercase printed letters, there are also quite a few that are quite different. While they may look difficult to master at first glance, they can be mastered pretty quickly with a little bit of effort and practice. Even if you've never written cursive letters before, going through the pages on this website will give you all the information and practice you need to quickly master all of the lowercase cursive letters.

Cursive Capital Letters

Much like their lowercase counterparts, many cursive capital letters resemble printed capital letters. If you've already mastered the lowercase cursive letters, you'll also find that some cursive capital letters resemble their lowercase counterparts. Then there are a number of capital cursive letters that look strange and difficult, but again, with a bit of cursive writing practice, they can be mastered quite quickly. What you'll likely find is that as you begin to learn how to write capital cursive letters, they're a lot more fun and interesting to write than your usual printed letters.

Cursive Alphabet

Once you have mastered both lowercase and capital cursive letters, you'll know the cursive alphabet. This, however, isn't the end of your learning. Once you know all of the cursive letters, you'll still need to spend some time learning how to connect them all. One of the great advantages of cursive writing and letters is that they connect to one another to make writing quicker and more efficient, but you'll need to practice how different cursive letters are connected to one another. Again, this appears at first to be much more difficult than it is in reality, and once you spend some time practicing, you'll soon be writing cursive words and cursive sentences without a second thought.

Cursive Letter Videos

For those just beginning to learn how to write cursive letters, one of the best ways to learn is to watch how-to videos on how to write each letter in cursive. We have created a video to show you how to write every letter of the cursive alphabet including lowercase and capital cursive letters. Once you have watched the video a time or two, you should have a pretty good idea of what you need to do to write that particular cursive letter. You can use your finger to copy the motions you see in the video or take out a pen and follow along with the video as all the cursive letters are written. Doing this with each new letter you learn will give you a feel of how cursive writing is written and help you when you begin to practice on worksheets.

Cursive Letter Worksheets

In addition to watching videos showing how to write cursive letters, you'll also want to practice your writing, using our cursive writing worksheets. You can use these worksheets while following along with the videos or you can do them on your own in your free time to practice. These cursive letter worksheets will help you to learn the stroke work of each of the letters and help you quickly master them. We've created a specific worksheet for each lowercase and capital cursive letter, and we also have an option where you can create your own cursive worksheets so you can practice any cursive letters that may be giving you a bit more trouble than the others.

We appreciate that you found your way to our little corner of the Internet and we hope you've found the information on how to learn cursive writing helpful. We want to make Cursive Letters the best resource for those who want to learn to write in cursive so we'd appreciate hearing from you with any ideas or suggestions you have that we can implement to make your cursive learning experience easier. Please feel free to contact us and let us know.

Writing in cursive is a good skill to have if you’d like to handwrite a letter, a journal entry, or an invitation. Start by improving your writing skill by making adjustments. You can then practice lowercase and uppercase letters in cursive, working your way through the alphabet. Make sure you also perfect your technique by practicing once a day and challenging yourself to write long sentences or paragraphs in cursive.

Starting Off

Step 1 Sit on a chair at a desk.

  • You should not write at a desk that is too low or too high for you. Make sure you do not have to crouch or strain yourself to sit comfortably at the desk.

Step 2 Use an ink pen that has a felt tip.

  • You can also use pencil to write in cursive, especially if you want the option of erasing your letters and starting again. Get a B pencil with a triangular barrel, as it will be softer on the paper and easier to write with.

Step 3 Write on lined paper so your letters are the same size and shape.

  • If you’d prefer plain paper so you have more room to try the flowing, loose movements of cursive, you can use it. However, it may be more difficult for you to make your letters uniform without lines on the paper.

Step 4 Place the paper at an angle.

  • Angling the paper will make it easier for you to slant your letters as you write. In cursive, your letters should slant up and to the right by 35 degrees.

Step 5 Use your non-writing hand to move the paper up as you write.

Creating Lowercase Cursive Letters

Step 1 Practice “a.

  • Once you master "a" and "c," try doing letters that follow similar strokes like “d,” “q,” and “g.”

Step 3 Try “i.

  • You can also try other letters that follow similar strokes, such as “w” and “t.”

Step 5 Do “e.

  • You can try other letters that follow similar strokes, such as “h,” “k,” “b,” “f,” and “j.”

Step 7 Practice “n.

  • Once you master these letters, try letters that follow similar strokes like “v” and “x.”

Doing Uppercase Cursive Letters

Step 1 Try

  • An uppercase "A" in cursive is similar to a lowercase "a" in cursive. It should touch the top and bottom lines.

Step 2 Try “O.”

  • The letters “O,” “M,” and “N” in uppercase follow the same strokes as lowercase. The only difference is that the uppercase letters cover more space on the line.

Step 3 Practice “B.”

  • An uppercase “B” is written very differently in cursive than a lowercase “b.” You may need to practice it a few times to get it right.

Step 4 Do “E.”

  • An “E” in cursive looks a lot like a backwards “3.”

Step 5 Practice

Perfecting Your Technique

Step 1 Use letter guides.

  • Look for letter guides online. You can also ask your instructors or teachers for letter guides.

Step 2 Practice one letter by making a linked pattern.

  • You can also try doing a pattern of a different letter on each line of the page.
  • If you find certain letters difficult, challenge yourself to do a pattern of the letter.

Step 3 Join up your letters to form words.

  • You can also try writing your name in cursive, especially if it is short.

Step 4 Practice writing cursive 20 minutes a day.

  • As a fun challenge, you can try writing out sentences or phrases that you like from books, songs, or movies in cursive as part of your practice.

Community Q&A

Community Answer

  • Brush pens are often used for cursive lettering to achieve swooping, calligraphy-style lettering. However, you should stick to normal pens when starting out so you don't over-complicate things. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • If you're really struggling with a certain letter, adapt it slightly to work for you. If you're stuck on a lowercase "b," for example, alter the form slightly to look more like a printed "b." Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Tips from our Readers

  • Practice with phrases that use nearly every letter of the alphabet, like "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," "The five boxing wizards jump quickly," or "Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow."
  • Try using cursive instead of print in your everyday life. For example, take notes in cursive during class or write your grocery list in cursive.

About This Article

Tami Claytor

To get started writing cursive, it helps to have the right materials. Use a pen with ink that flows smoothly, such as a felt-tip pen or a gel pen. You can also write cursive with a pencil, which will make it easier to fix mistakes as you learn. Choose writing paper with lines to help make sure that your writing comes out straight and the sizes and shapes of your letters stay consistent. If possible, get three-lined paper that has a dotted line in the middle of each set of solid lines. As you write, keep the paper tilted at a 35° angle, which will help give the letters the correct amount of slant. Keep a relaxed grip on the pen or pencil and hold it at a 45° angle relative to the paper. Practice writing the lower-case letters first, since these are the ones you’ll use the most often. You might find it helpful to use a cursive letter chart that shows the steps to write each letter. For example, when you’re writing a lower-case a on 3-lined paper, begin with an upward stroke that starts at the solid bottom line and curves up until it meets the dotted line in the middle, then goes back down slightly. Then, trace the line backwards, but this time swoop back up and around to meet the end of the first stroke. Swoop back down to make a curving “tail” that ends just before it meets the dotted line. After you’ve mastered the lower-case letters, get to know the upper-case ones. While some of them, like A, are basically bigger versions of the lower-case letters, others look completely different. For example, you’ll need to use a totally different technique to make an upper-case F from the method you use to write the lower-case version. Once you’re used to writing all the letters, it’s time to put them together. Part of what makes cursive different from print is that the letters connect, which helps the script flow smoothly while you’re writing. Practice writing connected rows of letters, then move on to writing out words and sentences in cursive. It may feel awkward at first, but with about 20 minutes of practice a day, you’ll soon be writing beautiful, flowing cursive. If you want to learn how to improve your penmanship while writing cursive, keep reading the article! Did this summary help you? Yes No

The ability to write by hand is the only prerequisite. Young children will probably need the help of an adult to make it through the course.

The course could be completed in a week or months, depending on your skill level and commitment. Feel free to go at your own pace.

The course teaches a standard American cursive script, rooted in the tradition of American penmanship. The forms are similar to “Business Penmanship” or “Palmer Method”. The arm-writing approach of Palmer Method is not covered in this course, however, this course is a great start if you want to learn Palmer Method. You can learn more about The Palmer Method at ThePalmerMethod.com .

Everything about writing cursive is the same for left-handers as it is for right-handers, except for how you position your hand and body relative to the writing. In the lesson on paper position, I speak directly to the left-handers and provide a method for writing that will allow you to execute the cursive forms without smudging your writing.

Cursive is a very practical style of writing that holds significance in American culture. Cursive handwriting is seen as more mature, professional, and beautiful than print or manuscript writing. Technically, cursive is a flowing script that many find conducive to taking notes or getting thoughts down on the page.

Consistent Cursive is a free and comprehensive course for learning cursive. It uses a systematic approach that anyone can follow to learn cursive. Start learning cursive right now by watching the first video .

Your Instructor

A picture of David, the course instructor

Consistent Cursive was created by David DiGiovanni, aka Perfect Biscuits on YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit (shout out to /r/Handwriting). David has spent countless hours studying American penmanship since 2016, focusing on practical scripts like cursive. He has posted over 100 videos on YouTube teaching cursive.

David also studies and teaches the traditional method of writing called, “muscular movement” (aka Palmer Method), where the arm is used to write cursive script. Consistent Cursive does not teach muscular movement, but is a great first step towards learning it. You can learn more about muscular movement at ThePalmerMethod.com .

Learning cursive handwriting remains a relevant and valuable skill for several reasons, despite the increased use of digital communication and typing. Here are some of the key reasons why learning cursive handwriting is still important:

  • Historical and Cultural Significance . Cursive handwriting has historical and cultural significance. It is an art form that has been used for centuries and is present in important historical documents, handwritten letters, and other forms of written communication. Learning cursive allows individuals to connect with their cultural heritage and understand historical manuscripts.
  • Signature and Formal Documents . Signatures on important documents like contracts, legal agreements, and official forms are often written in cursive. Having a legible and unique cursive signature can be essential for legal and formal purposes.
  • Personal Correspondence . While digital communication is prevalent, there is a charm and personal touch associated with handwritten letters and notes. Learning cursive allows individuals to send heartfelt, handwritten messages to friends and loved ones.
  • Cognitive Benefits . Learning cursive handwriting can have cognitive benefits, especially for young learners. It can enhance fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. It also activates different areas of the brain compared to typing, potentially contributing to improved neural development.
  • Reading Historical Documents . Proficiency in cursive enables individuals to read historical documents and letters from past centuries. Many primary sources and historical records are written in cursive, and the ability to read them is important for researchers, historians, and students studying history.
  • Individual Expression . Cursive handwriting offers individuals an opportunity to develop a unique and personal writing style. Your cursive writing can be an expression of your individuality and creativity.
  • Neatness and Legibility . Cursive writing can improve the neatness and legibility of one’s handwriting. In some cases, it can be more legible than print handwriting, especially for those who take the time to master it.
  • Academic Requirements . Cursive handwriting may still be a requirement in some educational institutions or standardized tests. Students who are proficient in cursive may have an advantage in such situations.
  • Artistic and Aesthetic Value . Cursive writing is often considered more elegant and aesthetically pleasing than print handwriting. People may choose to use cursive for creative projects, art, or design work.

While cursive handwriting may not be as essential for everyday communication as it once was, it still holds a place in education and culture. Whether for historical appreciation, personal expression, or practical purposes, learning cursive handwriting can be a valuable and enriching skill.

When using cursive handwriting worksheets, remember these tips:

  • Start with the basics . If you’re new to cursive writing, begin with individual letters before moving on to words and sentences.
  • Practice regularly . Consistency is key to improving your cursive handwriting. Dedicate time each day to practice.
  • Use proper posture and grip . Ensure you’re sitting comfortably with proper posture and holding your writing utensil correctly.
  • Pay attention to letter formation . Focus on the shape and flow of each letter in cursive. Practice until you’re comfortable with the stroke order and connections.
  • Slow down . Cursive writing is typically slower than printing, especially when you’re starting. Take your time to ensure legibility.

By using cursive handwriting worksheets and practicing regularly, you can improve your cursive writing skills and develop an elegant and legible cursive style.

NOTE: By selecting the “Save/Edit” button you can customize or personalize your cursive handwriting worksheet. You can add your own text or change colors to make the worksheets uniquely yours. After selecting new colors, specify the height as “3000 pixels” to ensure high resolution and to make sure your worksheet fits on the entire piece of paper.

Free Cursive Handwriting Worksheets - This Reading Mama

If you’ve followed me for very long, you know that I’m not a huge fan of worksheets or workbooks. I do, however, use them from time to time. And this is one of those times.

ALuv (going into 3rd grade) has been working on cursive handwriting and loving it. I checked out the order in which Handwriting Without Tears suggests to teach cursive and created some cursive handwriting worksheets for him to coincide with their developmental suggestions.

Today, I’m sharing them for FREE {download is at the end of this post}.

In this pack, you’ll find TWO levels of handwriting practic:

cursive handwriting worksheets level 1

LEVEL 2 looks like this and encourages independent writing

ALuv has been working through Level 2 and will continue to do so this summer. He has really enjoyed it so far and I’ve been impressed with how much he has retained and used.

I really love these handwriting packets! They are great for my kids because we begin cursive in kindergarten, so these words are totally on their level as we progress from letters to short easy words that they can actually read and spell. I’m just curious how you made these and whether you have any more? Is there any way I could make my own with the spelling words they are using?

April 22, 2015 at 9:20 pm

I’m so glad you can use them with your kids! You can find more handwriting resources in this post –> https://thisreadingmama.com/handwriting-notebooks/ I made them using a font from http://www.fonts4teachers.com and just did it in Power Point. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for making these packs available. Our school system is not teaching cursive writing since adopting common core standards. I’ve decided to teach my grandson myself. I still think it is important.

Cursive Name Tracing Worksheet

Practice writing in cursive with the D`Nealian font with simple doodle borders.

Cursive writing is an old-school skill that kids should learn, but whether they’re taught it varies depending on where you live. Whether you want to do some cursive handwriting practice for school or teach it at home, this free customizable cursive name tracing worksheet can really help.

You can even change the font, color, and border!

Free Cursive Name Tracing Worksheet

Most kids love learning to write their names, which is great because it’s also one of the most important things they need to learn early on. And what better first full word to practice in cursive?

Tips for Cursive Writing Practice:

  • Break it up. Begin with just their first name, then work on the last name, and finally both together.
  • Limit repetitions. When you first introduce cursive letters, limit the number of repetitions on each sheet. It might seem better to practise more, but it can be overwhelming or tiring for kids. The printable can be customized to have 1 to 10 repetitions on each sheet.
  • Try other words . Once your child has mastered their own name you can generate practice worksheets for other names (like those of family members) or simple words. It’s a great way to master connecting different letters in cursive!
  • Make it fun . Let the child pick some words to practice and select their favorite border. You can also practice writing with a variety of utensils like colored pencils, crayons, and markers.

What Font to Use For Cursive Writing Worksheets?

We use the D’Nealian font as our default for cursive because it has well formed, easy to read handwriting letters.

If kids are still new to handwriting, it can be helpful to choose the font with arrow guides so they form cursive letters correctly. Once the basics are down, the dotted version of the font works well.

Another fun idea is to practice hand lettering with this free cursive name tracing worksheet. Use the dotted or solid font and a thick marker to practice hand lettering techniques.

Keep Practicing Cursive Writing

The more kids practice writing in cursive the more they develop muscle memory and it becomes second nature!

Teaching cursive handwriting to young children? Here’s how they learn, and resources for instruction

Good handwriting is not an end in itself. Rather, it is a means to literacy that fundamentally transforms the human experience. Developing control over the shape of the 26 letters of the alphabet ultimately unlocks the ability to engage in the world of fact, fiction — and endless possibilities of the imagination afforded by written communication.

Legible, fluent handwriting makes this possible . Legible handwriting can be achieved by the vast majority of young learners by the end of Grade 2, given direct instruction and ample opportunities for practice. Fluency can follow in a similar fashion with continued instruction and practice.

Currently, far too many young children fail to achieve handwriting benchmarks to succeed with the academic written demands of Grade 4 .

Cursive handwriting was reintroduced on the Ontario Grade 3 curriculum in June 2023, soon followed by California . Yet school instruction in cursive is bound for failure unless strong resource support is provided for kindergarten to Grade 3 teachers .

Open-access resources for cursive handwriting

I collaborated with volunteers from the Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild in Calgary, Alta., and drew on more than 10 years of tracking and publishing data on young children’s handwriting to create Teaching Handwriting to Young Children , an open-educational resource .

Our resource, downloadable in 15 user-friendly files, covers concepts and skills leading up to and including cursive handwriting in the kindergarten to Grade 3 years.

Proficiency grows gradually

Becoming proficient in handwriting is a gradual, protracted process. It must begin early and align with developmental markers of children’s neuromotor and cognitive readiness to engage with the unfolding demands of handwriting. In turn, there are also demands of generating quality text.

Research suggests that a hybrid script, described as a clean, uncluttered manuscript-cursive hand, will most readily develop legibility and fluency . Legibility and fluency of handwriting in turn create neuronal patterns and networks . These support complex processes of organizing, planning, revising and retrieving precise and nuanced vocabulary.

We focus on instructing children in italic printing and cursive or connected script for a variety of reasons:

  • economy of effort, ease of execution and demand on young learners’ musculature and visual motor memory ;
  • ease in transitioning from print to cursive hand by learning only a few connector strokes;
  • the elegance and simplicity of the script itself.

Strong foundational skills

The three-part resource comprehensively mobilizes research to explain the “how and why” of teaching cursive handwriting.

An illustrated cat with many dots next to it in the same shape

It introduces cursive handwriting instruction and includes specific lessons to use with children, from “pre-printing” activities (like colouring, tracing and connecting dots) to lined sheets demonstrating script and letter spacing. Resources are accessible with rich use of photos, illustrations of children’s work, easy layout and design.

The resource combines theory and practice to help teachers or parents instruct children in developmentally progressive ways, beginning with setting in place strong foundational skills .

At school, the focus is:

In kindergarten:

  • on fine motor manipulative and fine motor literacy skills supported by hands-on, play-based learning and direct instruction ;
  • shape recognition;
  • “path of movement” work (referring to the direction of letter strokes, to ultimately build habits that will allow children later to join letters);
  • and letter tracing, copying and printing from memory.

Children must be able to reconstruct internal mental models of letters seen on a page, and then with fine motor control, reproduce letters onto a page.

A child touching colourful letters

When a child can print their name at the size of about three-quarters of an inch, this is a key indicator the child has developed basic print concepts . This means they understand print is a representational system of mapping sounds to letters . They are in early stages of recognizing this through letters in their name, and so they learn to generalize to the entire alphabet. Shape recognition is really important here too, usually in early kindergarten.

By the end of kindergarten, young learners should be able to print most of the lower and upper case letters. This involves enormous amounts of tactile experiences with letter shapes, games and activities for developing a good pincer grip, using the tools of literacy (crayons, pencils) in developing control over fine motor skills such as drawing, colouring and “staying between the lines” tasks .

A play-based approach that is engaging and fun for young children is important in motivating and creating a sense of confidence and agency in these early, emergent moments of written literacy learning. Training the muscle memory in these skills so they eventually come automatically are the keys to the next step in literacy development.

Direct instruction in handwriting begins in Grade 1 with short, consistent lessons of 20 minutes, with another 40 minutes of practice opportunities during the day. Making labels, greeting cards , thank you notes , crafts and lists reinforce these foundational skills.

Handwriting should be legible at the end of Grade 1.

A child practising writing.

Grade 2 represents a transition point where the joins or ligatures are introduced. Again, this involves movement and patterning exercises for developing the muscle memory for connecting letters beginning with the diagonal move such as ai, an.

Making connections and minimizing the number of “lift offs” (where pencil must lift from the page) facilitates developing speed, thus opening precious working memory space for other demands of generating text such as retrieving and mobilizing precise and nuanced vocabulary choices. Young learners continue to work on letter shape and size.

Grade 3 consolidates these foundational skills by making increased numbers of connections and control over shape, size, space and slant of handwriting — with indicators of speed or fluency of hand.

It becomes clear that developing fluent handwriting imposes many competing demands on young learners. Early, direct, programmatic, developmentally progressive, sustained instruction with ample practice opportunities throughout the school day can go a long way toward realizing better handwriting outcomes among our young learners and in turn, better academic outcomes.

Good instruction and resource support are key to achieving this success.

2 Minnesota students' cursive handwriting skills get national recognition

By Derek James

Updated on: April 1, 2024 / 9:44 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — As technology pushes us forward, putting pen to paper may seem like a thing of the past.

But it's a passion for two Minnesota kids, and one that's landed them national recognition.

Inside St. Anne's Academy in White Bear Lake, cursive never went away.

"There's nothing wrong with technology of course, but we can't lose the ability to express ourselves in written language, and the students do well with cursive," said Principal Sister Mary Xavier.

Sixth grader Mary Kieffer and fifth grader Zita Miller are among the winners in the 2024 Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting contest, which sees around 80,000 students from kindergarten through sixth grade apply each year.

All students write the sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." It's chosen because it contains every letter of the alphabet.

"K is a tough one, I'm sure everybody's got a different letter. X I've got a lot of practice with, so I don't have to worry about that one," Sister Xavier said.

Kieffer said capital T is her biggest challenger, while Miller's is lowercase Q.

"It's pretty hard because I go into a G sometimes," Miller said.

Judges selected them as winners based on their letters' shape, size, spacing and slant.

"Many people are impressed by the children after they graduate that the students can read and write in cursive," Sister Xavier said.

Kieffer and Miller find personal benefits in knowing this lost art form.

"I have many pen pals that I like to write to in different states, so I use my handwriting to write to them," Kieffer said.

"I like to draw vines and cursive is kind of like drawing vines, and writing in cursive helps me with my flourishes," Miller said.

Kieffer and Miller were among 28 regional winners, four from each grade, who received an engraved medallion.

On Monday, WCCO learned Miller is also one of seven national winners. She'll get a trophy and $500.

Winners of national penmanship contest crowned as handwriting is 'having a moment'

Namuun Baasanbol poses for a photo with her handwriting.

It’s regarded, hands down, as the Super Bowl of penmanship tournaments.

The Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest, now in its 33rd year, crowned its 2024 grand champions on Monday, rewarding nine students from six states for their picture-perfect letters.

Ten-year old Zita Miller of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, took top honors in the fifth grade category. Her winning submission was one of the contest’s 80,000 entries.

“I like handwriting because it’s like art, drawing swirls and vines and curls,” Miller said, adding that she enjoys penning original mystery stories by hand.

Zita Miller poses for a photograph.

Namuun Baasanbold, from Carmel, Indiana, was named grand champion in the first grade category, and said she likes to give handwritten “love notes” to family and friends.

“Writing by hand makes me feel special,” she said.

The contest celebrates a centuries-old practice, but the victories come as handwriting is experiencing a kind of renaissance in the U.S. In January, California became the 22nd state to require cursive to be taught in schools — a significant jump from 2016, when just 12 states mandated it.

At the same time, various studies published over the past decade have detailed how writing with pencil and paper can benefit memory, cognitive development, reading comprehension and fine motor skills.

“Handwriting is definitely having a moment,” said Sharon Quirk-Silva, a member of the California state Assembly who sponsored the bill. She said she heard from people from all over the country who penned “beautifully handwritten notes” of support for the new law.

“We live in a very polarized nation. So many issues are contentious. But with this handwriting bill, we had full bipartisan support and goodwill. The importance of handwriting is something people seem to agree on,” she said.

Quirk-Silva said she backed the bill, in large part, because of her own experience — before becoming a lawmaker, she taught elementary school for 25 years.

“For years, technology has been taking over the curriculum in schools, with many kids being dormant in front of the screen, using two or three screens a day. Now, there’s a feeling of, ‘Let’s get pens and pencils back in kids’ hands,’” she said.

Although the California law mandates that first through sixth graders in the state receive cursive instruction, Quirk-Silva said she believes that writing by hand — in print or cursive — is an important language arts tool.

“It’s a way of slowing down a little bit, taking your thoughts from your brain to your hand and physically doing the writing,” she said.

Sophia Vinci-Booher, an assistant professor of psychology and human development at Vanderbilt University, said her research found that writing by hand enabled preschool students to form connections in the brain that likely support early letter recognition.

For that study , published in 2016, 20 children were asked to practice certain letters by writing them over and over, and practice others by pressing a button.

“Then we asked the children to go into an MRI scanner and look at those letters they’d been practicing,” Vinci-Booher explained. Her team analyzed the children’s brain activity to assess the functional connectivity between different areas of their brains.

“We found that the connection was stronger with letters they wrote by hand than those they tapped,” she said.

The research underscores the importance of the physical act of forming symbols, Vinci-Booher added.

“Writing by hand is a good thing for kids because it supports early reading development and it engages the fine motor system, which is developmentally important,” she said.

A 2021 study measured people’s brain activity during a memory task, this time finding that University of Tokyo students exhibited stronger activity and better recall after they had written information down on paper than when they did on a smartphone or even with a stylus on a tablet. The researchers suggested that the physical act of writing on paper provides the brain more details that trigger memory, and concluded that using paper notebooks can help students retain information in part because of their “tangible permanence.”

A similar study published in January compared the brain activity of students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology who took notes by hand to the activity of those who typed their notes. The findings suggested that the students who wrote by hand had higher levels of electrical activity across a wide range of brain regions responsible for sensory processing and memory.

The results come as little surprise to many educators.

“I’ve seen firsthand that the kids learn more when they write by hand,” said Geeta Kadakia, who teaches second through fifth grade at the DAV Montessori School in Houston. “The lightbulb goes off through those achievements in handwriting, and handwriting leads to achievements in other areas, even math. When students make their numbers more neatly, their math scores improve.”

Laura Gajderowicz taught elementary school for 33 years in Indiana before retiring in 2022. She said she worried as she watched handwriting take a back seat to technology in U.S. classrooms in the early 2000s.

“Writing by hand does so much to help with the development of a student’s eye-hand coordination,” Gajderowicz said, adding: “I’m not against technology — I just think there’s a place at the table for both technology and handwriting when it comes to learning.”

This year, Gajderowicz served as a regional judge in the Zaner-Bloser contest.

“I was pleasantly surprised to see how many entries we had, especially from children in the upper grades,” she said.

Gajderowicz selected winners using criteria that analyzed the mechanics and precision of the letters students wrote, including their shapes, sizes, slant and spacing.

Contestants were asked to write the sentence, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” because it includes the entire alphabet, as well as a sentence explaining why handwriting makes them a better reader and writer.

Namuun Baasanbold’s entry.

Baasanbold said she was “over the moon” to find out she won: “I screamed and celebrated with friends at a restaurant with pizza and an appetizer and a sundae for dessert,” she said.

Her prizes include a trophy and $500 — plus bragging rights.

“I like to use my handwriting to impress people,” she said.
